I feel bad for the animators of this film. Not only did they have such passion for the storyline in their interviews and DVD commentary, but Ruby Gillman also has a beautiful style that matches the energy of Puss In Boots with the textures of How To Train Your Dragon.
We really were robbed of a better version of this film
Being fair, Dreamworks isn't necessarily known for being consistent with their output.
For films like Shrek or How to Train Your Dragon there's duds like Boss Baby or the first Puss in Boots movie.
I mean DreamWorks Animation is a Rollercoaster of quality, you can either get masterpieces like The Prince of Egypt, Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon, and Kung Fu Panda, or you'll get trash like Boss Baby, Bee Movie, and Shark Tale
I was watching the climax and the whole time I just thought "the water physics are way too good."
Hopefully they are feeling better appreciation now. The film has a much MUCH better audience on Netflix
i will say i would have liked chelsea ACTUALLY being nerissa's daughter but there is lso a "oh god" moment of a grown adult manipulating a teenager for their own gain
Chelsea not being the actual daughter was the biggest fumble of this film
@@pedanticat9479 Was apparently changed, as they didn't want the main characters mom to be a killer. (She killed Nerissa, leaving Chelsea to plot revenge)
@@jf_kein_k8590 I also wonder if the time was a concern- this movies' shorter than normal and they didn't have much time for a subplot. I'd have preferred if they were two chars, but if time was a factor it makes sense
Me too!
Which is why it bugs me so much that there was no red flags established nor build up to being Chelsea being revealed as Nerissa.
A grown adult manipulating a teenager for their own gain.
Now where have I seen this before ?
Gravity Falls : Pacifica got controlled by her parents to act a certain way.
The Owl House : Amity Blight got controlled by her parents.
But both Amity and Pacifica got character development ( Amity getting the most ).
One of the things I really appreciated about this movie that you didn't touch on is that Ruby's design feels properly monstrous when she goes full kraken. She's not a more "cute and cuddly" version because she's the protagonist. There's a lot of movies where the main character becomes a "monster" but the actual design doesn't match because the film is afraid we won't relate to them anymore.
To me, it’s the opposite. Most of the designs in general feel far too “cute and cuddly”
fun fact, some people can smell salt water, some cant, i'm one of the people that cant. it's like arsenic, some people can smell it, some cant.
i thought everyone could it smells like how it taste but alot less extreme
Some people can smell sickness and when is going to rain.
I can smell rain but my brother can smell sickness, is really interesting when he tells people that they're gonna be sick and they don't believe him only to show up next day with he flu

Ruby Gilman is a fun movie but if you look into the deleted scenes and early concepts, we were robbed of a much better movie. I actually just made a whole video about it on my channel.
Hopefully they retcon the twist ending if they do a sequel.
So basically the same general issue as Wish, except no one hates this movie as much.
@@maxwasson2000I actually wouldn’t mind a tv show for Ruby Gilman if it was well done. I mean it shouldn’t be impossible for DW TV animation. I heard the first How to Train Your Dragon show was good.
@FlyingFocs Kind of thigh Ruby Gilman was at least entertaining and had memorable characters
@@Gamermario-lb3rqA TV show would rule! It gave me major My Life as a Teenage Robot vibes
It is a neat movie,
But I still don't like that last minute change they made by having Chelsea be Nerissa,
rather than her being Nerissas daughter who wants revenge because Agatha killed her mother.
Would've also fit into that perception and making your own decisions theme.
True, but in my opinion, it makes Chelsea/ Nerissa creepier! Like, the fact that this adult woman has been hanging out with, influencing, and manipulating a child is pretty creepy when you think about it!
I saw this movie once, I liked it. Then I heard people were hating on it because it wasn't like Puss in Boots so I felt bad for it and saw it a second time. Both times in theaters, no regrets. It is currently part of my Netflix "My List" which I use as a favorites list.
I love Last Wish but it's infuriating when people insists every animated movie need to be on that level
@@pedanticat9479 I know, right?!
This is the exact energy that I love. Gotta stand up for the underdogs!
never saw puss in boots. this movie's contrivances outweigh my capacity to suspend disbelief. beautifully animated though
@@AlexParkerEmcee you should watch the puss in boots the last wish movie its super good
I really didn't like this movie at all. However, the theatre we were in was almost entirely empty, with only a few kids in there. And their excited ramblings about the cool "kraket!" Made the whole thing so worth it!
Opinion handled. I love this movie.
I felt the exact same way about the Incredibles 2. Brad Bird was going to take that story in a FAR more interesting direction. I feel like Disney had other ides though.
I actually really liked this film - something kinda of embarrassing though was that by the time my ~20 year old sister and I (~17 years old) booked tickets, it had been out for so long that there was only 1 other ticket booked
We go into the cinema, the other person isn't there yet, we sit down, wait for the film to start, and realise.... hm, that seat that's "out of order" is awfully close to the other person's seat, isn't it?
The "person who booked a ticket" was the cinema booking the ticket so no one would sit there - we were the only two people in the showing
It was fun though lol
As much as I like the movie, I think the Nerissa twist brings the whole thing down.
Not only was Chelsea more interesting as Nerissa's daughter like in earlier drafts, but the Nerissa twist also proves Grandmamah's boarderline racist view of Mermaids completely right.
They only made this change so Agatha wouldn't have blood on her hands, but there are other ways they could've worked around this.
"Archiveofourown" User Thatdude21 came up with a decent way to work around Agatha being a murderer.
After Nerissa was defeated, she was banished by her kind because they didn't want to fight the krakens in the first place and she eventually gave birth to Chelsea after her banishment. One day, she would catch Agatha putting the Trident in the volcano and tries to retrieve it, but the strong currents in the volcano kill her and Chelsea, now traumatised by the horrific death of her mom, makes it her goal to avenge her mother and liberate her kind.
If they went with this approach, Agatha at the very least wouldn't be directly responsible for the death of Nerissa.
This is a duplicate comment in case the original doesn't resurface.
EDIT: Thatdude21 also rewrote the climax and made it more interesting, here's a somewhat condensed version of his climax.
Ruby doesn't stop Chelsea by destroying the trident, but by telling her that her kind didn't want to fight the krakens and they exiled Nerissa for forcing them to fight and Nerissa was also selfish for trying to the trident back without thinking about what would happen to Chelsea if she died trying to get the trident and she could've also started a new life on land with Chelsea. Ruby even gets Grandmamah to admit she might've been unfair in her judgement.
Chelsea starts breaking down and tries to kill Ruby in a fit of rage. Ruby lets her guard down in a risky move to prove that Chelsea isn't a monster. Chelsea raises the trident and after what feels like an eternity, brings it down towards Ruby. She comes within a few feet of stabbing Ruby, but she can't bring herself to do so. She suddenly forces her arms down and starts crying.
Ruby and Agatha comfort Chelsea who tearfully admits that she just wants to hug her mom again but she can't. Agatha and Ruby hug Chelsea and even Grandmamah rests her hand on Chelsea's back feeling rather shameful about her view on mermaids.
Afterwards, Chelsea becomes disgusted by the trident and hands it to the krakens so they can dispose of it. They use their laser eyes to destroy it and Chelsea shrinks back to her normal mermaid form.
After Ruby picks Chelsea up, Chelsea apologises for all the trouble she caused, but Ruby, Agatha and Grandmamah admit that if it weren't for Chelsea, Ruby wouldn't have gotten the chance to embrace who she was and the rest of the family got to patch things up even if it took getting their butts kicked and almost losing their lives.
After that Chelsea starts leaving before Ruby blocks her because she feels that she doesn't belong there, but Ruby disagrees and after thinking for a moment she asks Agatha if Chelsea could stay with them. After Agatha asks the other family members if it's okay and they agree.
Chelsea is overjoyed by this and Ruby brings Chelsea up to her cheek and Chelsea hugs her tearfully with Agatha and Grandmamah joining in. While Chelsea is happy to become a Gillman, she does want to wait a bit before she moves in because she wants to settle living on land first. Grandmamah even promises to search for the mermaids to tell them it’s time for a new peaceful era between the 2 species and invites Chelsea to the kraken soldier training classes after showing her impressive combat capabilites.
Agatha then tells Ruby that she won't lie to her anymore and she can still make it to the prom. Ruby takes Chelsea to the prom boat. Brill then arrives and is informed about Chelsea's adoption which excites him and he is embraced by his mother and sister to his delight. After Ruby and Chelsea arrive at the boat looking decked out, Ruby is applauded and Chelsea, who was worried about the students shunning her, is also given a hero's welcome. After patching things up with her friends, Chelsea tells Connor that Ruby actually save him earlier and Connor and Ruby start dancing together.
While that happens, Grandmamah catches up with Agatha and the rest of her family, including her son Sam. Meanwhile Gordon makes his apology video and becomes a kraken supporter. Back on the boat, Ruby is still dancing with Connor, Margot is dancing excitedly with Kayla, Bliss is dancing more slowly with Trevin and while Chelsea is dancing by herself she is still having the time of her life. All of them then join each other in a group dance and freeze. The dance is now a photo on Ruby's phone.
After scrolling through several videos of her family, we see the family in their car with Agatha driving, Arthur in the passenger seat next to her, Ruby sitting in the rear right seat, Sam in the middle and Chelsea on the left. They soon arrive at their destination where Agatha warmly welcomes Chelsea to the Gillman's home. Ruby and Sam guide Chelsea through the house and as she takes in the scenery and decor of the house in awe, Nessie suddenly catched her attention. Nessie jumps into Chelsea's arm and starts licking her cheek to her with Chelsea laughing gleefully. Ruby and Sam join in on the fun while Agatha and Arthur watch proudly.
When then fade to a view of Oceanside High. A couple of construction workers are placing what appears to be a circular plaque on the school's front. It has an illustration of Ruby in her giant form on it. Ruby, Connor, Chelsea, Margot, Trevin, and Bliss are walking up to the school. Suddenly they are stopped by Gordon parking his tour bus in front of them. Brill pokes his head out the window and tells Ruby that the Devil Whale has been spotted and is headed straight for the Kraken Kingdom. Ruby hands her bag to Connor and asks Chelsea if she want to follow her. Chelsea declines because she wants to focus on high school and jokingly says that the Devil Whale already has enough on his plate dealing with Ruby and a 2v1 would be overkill at that point. Ruby starts to run off, but then turns around to kiss Connor and starts running off again with Chelsea cheering her on. After landing in the water and becoming giant, she swims off to fight the Devil Whale as Grandmamah finishes the movie with her narration.
Grandmamah: "See? I told you, people! The ocean will always need a Kraken, and a Kraken will always answer the call!"
I very much agree and it's my only issue with the movie. I feel like the ending goes against what the rest of the movie established
@@njdotson And what do you think of Thatdude21's alternate death for Nerissa and his rewrite of the movie's climax?
This was actually a very entertaining read! I definitely like this ending a lot more lol
@@user-iy3nt5mm2v True, I will admit that when I play the Inside Out music track "Joy Turns to Sadness/A Growing Personality" while reading the part of Thatdue21's fanfiction where Chelsea mourns the death of her mother and is comforted by Ruby, Agatha and Grandmamah while everyone else watches in awe, I actually start crying.
If you want to read the whole fanfiction, look up "Archiveofourown Thatdude21."
I remember seeing this in theater (so I have that claim) and my biggest issue with the movie is... it would've been better as a cartoon series than as a theatrical movie. That was about it, though.
Ruby Gillman, like the majority of Dreamwork’s (and even Disney’s) newest projects, is actually very fun and amazingly animated but instead of actually investing in proper commercials (instead of just spoiling the entirety of the movie in the trailers) they make mediocare trailers and use those as an excuse for not doing more projects like that! Strange World and Ruby Gillman are very fun and very pretty and should be appraciated instead of used as an excuse to abandoning more projects like them due to bad advertising...
....Disney??? This is a dreamworks movie lol. Your point stands though, dreamworks did bare minimum to market this

I'm pleased you pointed out the similarity to Turning Red, because it seemed to borrow from it in almost every department. By the way, this is a really good film in it's own right, but Turning Red is better in just about every department. Turning Red could make you laugh out loud, then break your heart in the blink of an eye. The two scenes, the Red Moon Ritual and the scene where Mei meets her Mom as a little girl are among the best moments I've ever seen in an animated movie. It is a seriously underrated. On the nose seems to be a regular criticism about TR's treatment of puberty, but it needed to be to break new ground to normalise sanitary towels, which are a necessary and normal part of a teenage girl's life. As I've said, this is a great little movie, but I consider Turning Red to be in a different class.
Okay, you've got to do Everything great about The Bad Guys. You've done every film around it so pleaseeee
Bad Guys is SO underrated
I'd love that. Just that one shot where Wolf does a heel-toe gear shift alone is worth the price of admission.
When he said people can't name other Jane Fonda movies, I was about to say "9 to 5", but then realized that was the only one I could name. Touché, Mr. Lee, well played.
I related to Ruby a crazy amount when I first saw this film in theatres. I came to it thinking it would be forgettable but man, I can’t get it out of my head now almost a year later. While I am disappointed that some things never made it in, I loved the film a lot. Just a very sweet and relatable story. Plus Ruby is an adorable cinnamon roll and I enjoyed seeing her whenever she was on screen.
A sequel is always possible though. It did excellently in home media.
I'm so glad that everyone in the comments is giving constructive criticism about the film instead of being outright mean and rude
I mean I love the movie, but yes constructive criticism it's better then just saying it's bad. For example the pacing is one of the notable issues, the story goes a little fast.
This is pure joy to watch your channel I remember watching cinemasins during covid
This is just a throwback
Do you mean cinemawins?
I think it would have worked out better if the Gillmans claimed that they were from Greenland, because it's very Cold up there and Blue Skin seems to go well with the cold for some reason.
Better than the live action Little Mermaid?
YES!
I have made kind of a habit to rewatch this movie and Turning Red side-by-side after the idea ocurred to me when needing a movie-night to lift my spirits up.
The resulting experience now has me percieve both films as "spiritual sister movies" of a sort; together they are some of my personal comfort movies 😊
This was really fun to see in theaters, i hope it gets more respect than it did on release
It's definitely an underrated gem. Why they released this in the same month as Spiderverse, Transformers, Elemental and Indiana Jones is mind boggling
I though this was movie wasn't too bad, If there's one major criticism I had with it is that I didn't like the twist ending of Chelsea doing a heel-turn and turning into Nerissa in the third act, that just kinda killed it for me.
I still can't believe they took the plot twist from Sky High for this movies twist
@@erichfiedler1481 It's not as bad as the plot twist from Lightyear

i adored this movie!! im so happy to see dreamworks experimenting with so many different art styles and artist who are passionate about it. the ending isnt the greatest but i still think its such a gem
Thanks for making these videos they're are way to many negative videos out there that just ruin people's moods. But videos that take the time to appreciate things instead of ridiculing them just makes enjoying stuff so much better. And thanks for doing Ruby I really loved this movie and was sink of people dumping on it mostly do to it's lackluster marketing it's a good movie and I would love a squeal or a streaming series. Any may I suggest you do a video on wish it's another good movie that people treat horribly for the prettiest of reasons
Wish is overhated i admit but I wouldn’t even dare call it good, just disappointed. However I get your point
This movie felt alright to me, nothing stand out, but also nothing all that bad either. If I could change one thing about the movie, I think it would've been having Chelsea actually be Nerissa's daughter. The movie was playing up themes of breaking free from the restrictive ideas of past generations, so what if Chelsea was genuinely honest about wanting the trident to bring peace between the mermaids and the krakens, only for Nerissa to show up and betray her as well? You could've had an interesting conflict where the old generation try to fight each other like they did in the old days while the new generation tried working together to overcome the obstacles they faced.
But that's just my thoughts on how it could've improved, still a perfectly fine movie overall.
My only win for this movie after watching it was that it was pretty colorful. But I enjoyed this video ⭐️

Thank you for making this video. I have been a massive fan of this movie since it came out. So much so that I’ve made several videos about it. Including one where I sinned CinemaSins’ video on this movie.
I realized why the animation style looks so odd to me, its like Wallace and Gromit claymation but pure CG so its sorta uncanny
4:57 as someone who discovered the linda lindas through the FH5 rally expansion i kinda freaked out a bit like it literally gave me goose bumps because thier song 'Oh' was my fav as soon as i heard it from the game trailer
I really really hope this movie will be touched by that rare "Dreamworks' sequel magic" because the artstyle is really cool but the story feels a bit half assed and I'm not head over heels about the movie validating the "racist grandma" in the end or teasing her more controlling and bloodthirsty behaviour only for it to go nowhere...
@endertuber8300 I really hope you’re right. The Ruby Gillman universe has a lot of untapped potential and it would be a pity to go to waste. Then again, both DreamWorks and Universal must have already been convinced that the movie is loved by the audience, thanks to the success it has in the streaming platforms (it was even among the top 10 movies on Netflix during February).
As to what you said about the validation of the racist grandma, I also think that this was one of the weak points of the movie; DreamWorks Animation Studios must have been so busy fulfilling Jeffrey Katzenberg’s vision of making an Ariel doppelgänger into a villain that they ended up throwing the coherence of the movie out the window, just because of a petty grudge Katzenberg had over having the “Little Mermaid” being based on the wife of Glen Keane, the animator of the movie. As such, being driven by his grudge, Katzenberg came close to sabotaging the movie that would enact the Disney Renaissance by cutting off the song “Part of Your World”, something that, fortunately, didn’t come to pass.
Personally, I don’t think the directors of the movie really wanted to go the route of justified racism and accepting family traditions without wanting to go further and find your own destiny. Rather, I believe they had a problem reconciling the messages of the movie with Katzenberg’s will of giving Disney the middle finger, which resulted in the movie unintentionally teaching kids that if your family has racist opinions about a certain group of people, it’s better for you to accept them and go with it.
@@achilleasvaitsis4343 Exactly, the movie's point is not bad because they wanted it to be so but because they loaded the story with too much stuff... and the point about Ruby's goal of freedom and independance clashing with Chelsea being an Ariel middlefingers is 100% correct.
If they remained true to the movie's message she needed to actually be Nerissa's daughter mirroring Ruby's journey of struggling with a family that controls her life and finding freedom.
That's why I hope in some sort of continuation, it would be interesting to see more of the world and the characters grow, Chelsea specially
@@endertuber8300 I would also love to see some genuine friendship between the two leads of the movie: Ruby and Chelsea. Their chemistry is undeniable and the producers of the movie could play on the theme that friendship can traverse all kinds of stereotypes, prejudices, even differences in personality. During the “Super Sea Girl Ditch Day” scene we got a glance of what the movie could have been if the directors had decided to go that direction.
I feel the marketing could of been better for the film since most of the trailers already spoiled not just the twist but nearly everything.
FINALLY. I WAS WAITING FOR THIS.

I'm excited that there could be a Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken 2 movie coming out in 2027. Some one said that they got that message from DreamWorks on Twitter. Anyhow, Ruby Gillman deserves to become a franchise.
This movie passed under my radar but looks cute.
Thanks for always being positive.
Personally I really connected with ruby as a trans woman. That scene of her hands getting bigger from her pov and her voice dropping? Spiritually, been there. And with Chelsea manipulating her as a fellow, also older, “outsider” who does also get it but not enough to nit her, there’s a lot of resonant feelings. Seeing some mentions of deleted scenes, I have to wonder if that was intended.
If this move has the same twist as Sky High
I want to see this movie someday. I’ll get around to it eventually
I love how squishy the art style is
I am glad I purchased this, it was well worth a watch, and probably two. Some things might of been nicer to see, a little more clever but the simplicity in this story still makes it sweet!

I watched this on netflix and I felt meh about it. I've just seen these tropes so so many times. The plot felt a little awkward and some of the voice acting was a bit odd (ruby and liza's, mostly). I think your take on Wish will be most intriguing.
My best bet is that the no skateboarding sign has a pre-made template that they slap whatever image they need on top of as needed, hence why the fish is over the slash.
Even though this movie had some similarities to Pixar's Turning Red, it's okay in my books. This movie takes Turning Red and is more action-packed than friendship and bonding. Also, the mom in this movie, Agatha, is a more understandable helicopter mom than Ming from Turning Red. Because of all of the lying and secret keeping for Agatha was so that Ruby wouldn't be dragged into war. As for Ming, she did the same thing only because she had a terrible childhood, unlike her daughter. I can see that she even did it out of jealousy.
You should do the Prince of Egypt
One random thing like about this movie: gamer boys suit. Live that bright green lines and dots on black suit. Pattern has a bit of an art deco meets circuit board. I would legitimately buy a t-shirt with that pattern on it in green shiny. Would go well with my xbox circuit tshirt with the exact same colours

I like this movie. It was enjoyable, so in my book it's at least a 7/10.
I felt really bad this film flopped.
My main feeling was that even though I noticed a lot of story elements from other recent movies I felt the individual elements were all done better here. I loved this heaps more than Turning Red, especially the scene where Agatha first talks her daughter down from a panic attack. And unlike Strange World, it’s not the younger generation that had it all figured out and the elders had to do most of the learning. Here all 3 generations screwed up to some extent, and they all learn in the end.
I agree that there may be a bit too much stuffed in this at times but I had a lot of fun with this movie.
Da king is back baby he neva miss we're eating good today y'all
This movie (just watched on Netflix the other day) is by far not a bad movie, but its not a great movie either. Overall its a little shallow. Its got the fun pizzazz thats in Mitchell's vs the machines but without the emotional beats hitting as hard. Overall its got the vibe of more of a kids movie than a family movie
I shouldn't have binged the apes series. Now I know when that scene is in Dawn is. The exact timestamp.
This movie was great but some of the lines are the truest things ever
Did I miss it (which is possible because I had a spill and I was cleaning), or did this movie or the winsrration mis the epic dad joke possibility of saying "what's Kraken?"
I had said this to my little girl when we first saw the movie poster on a bus before it came out LMAO 🤣
This movie was done dirty by the marketing dept

Do you think you could do "John Carter" and Disney's "Lone Ranger"? Both movies are actually very good with awesome effects and good stories, but were murdered by Disney failing to promote them well. I'd love to see your opinion!!
Also, JP3 when?
Im surprised you didn't talk about how Godzilla was mentioned
I unironically loved this movie even if I was disappointed in the plot resolution.
There was so clearly something deeper about an interspecies war and moral ambiguity of the two sides making their own stories
But it ended with the kraken are 100% in the right when it felt like the mom abdicated her throne because she found out that the kracken hurt a lot of innocent merfolk or others.
Aside from the shallow plot that hinted at what once was something much better… I really really liked this movie
Just FYI, if the stick snack was crumbled it would be an NZ hot dog 😊.
