I realy dont like Flowerig Night. For me, this is probably the most monotonous composition. We have a 2-bar melody in which one phrase is repeated 3 times with little variety and is resolved at the end. And these 2 bars are played on the repeat for 24 bars with minimal changes. After that, the "chorus" gives hope, but no. Repeating 2 bars again, but on the 4th and 8th bars there are different resolutions, repeat 16 bars.
Oriental Dark Flight is from the exact same game and has an intro that just repeats and goes on forever... There's a reason why it hasn't been bought back. But I can see why someone wouldn't like Flowering Night. I myself prefer the SWR version to the original.
@@Hijiri_MIRACHION Can understand point. In Oriental Dark Flight I really like the bass part on the bows, which goes through the entire "verse", the keyboards here act more like a rhythm section, the melody is in the bass. And this part feels big and gloomy, the chorus creates rather the opposite effect and I like it less.
@@Megapig9001 A theme song I really don’t like is Nue’s theme because I feel like it’s like a school project someone has and does very well in the beginning. Such an interesting song to call your least favorite, Although changing your opinion is impossible this song to me is not bad, I really enjoy this era of ZUN music because of the rising action of many of the songs here.
It feels so much more… Mature more cynical. It sounds so serious and the tones that are established are maintained from the start. What don’t you like about it?”
@@ShinSHOGO The only thing more boring than the song is the Magic Stones themselves. They may have terrified Reimu, but they're just stones... There are midbosses in SoEW that never get dialogue or anything, and the boss is just some stones?!
There's certain Touhou songs I recall disliking and not wanting to listen to. Many of them were CD Original tracks (though there's just as many I love) but there's also Swordsman from a Distant Star from HRoP (I don't like the intro and the buildup isn't as impressive as it should be), the version of Tortoise Dragon ~ Fortune and Misfortune from WBaWC specifically (it took until it's remix in Touhou 19 for me to like it and it made the original sound rather empty in comparison), Septette for the Dead Princess (I know many people like it and it does fit the situation, but unlike U.N. Owen it never seems to have the impact it should have for me), Oriental Dark Flight (that intro is so long and repetitive, and the rest of the song, while better, isn't enough to make up for it), and the pairing of Like the Brilliance of Fairies and Can't Sleep Because it's Nighttime (they just don't compare to Sunny Rutile Flection), but my least favorite has to be Nemesis' Stronghold from Double Spoiler (The intro especially is my least favorite piece of Touhou music ever, it sounds so random and chaotic and the instruments chosen for it definitely do not help at all, and the rest of the song either doesn't impress me or is forgettable).
Kinda interesting you point out the emphasis on bass as one of the reasons you don't like it. One of my favorite songs which is The Colorless Wind on Youkai Mountain (TH16's stage 2 theme) has a really sick bass and that's what I remember it for lol
I probably will be mauled for saying this, but my least favorite touhou theme is Magus Night from Great Fairy Wars. I'm not entirely sure if it's a remix of the original Seihou theme (they share names iirc) But it just doesn't hit like the Seihou version does. The seihou version hits hard. The dbu remix of it is absolutely godly. This version is very different and to me, almost every good part from the Seihou version got replaced. now i might be wrong about that theme being a remix, but even if it's an entirely new song I still don't like it.
Hey, so you're a fellow fan of Heartfelt Fancy and Shining Needle Castle, yay! ❤ You nailed my problems with this very track. I don't find the opening interesting, and the track just doesn't fit in TGA. The other arrangements in TGA all change pacing, instruments, etc to fit in and do it pretty well (special mention goes to Hartmann, even though some people don't like it due to the change in pace). Speaking of relaxing themes, what's your opinion on the name registration themes of PoDD, LLS and MS? As for tracks I don't like, I can namedrop two. One I don't like on its own merits, and another I don't like due to surrounding factors. 1) The World is Made in an Adorable Way. To me, while it succeeds as a story theme, it fails as a Reimu theme. It tries to do double duty but can't, which is why imo ZUN should have picked a lane (either make dedicated story themes like the fighting games, or just let the characters mostly use their own themes in story mode like previous versus shmups). Magical Beast Scramble suffers from the opposite problem (too much "Marisa theme", not enough "story theme"), but I like the melody and instruments more. 2) Broken Moon. Look... the theme, in a vacuum, is okay in my opinion. It's a strong pre-battle theme. The problem is not the track... it's that it has displaced the much better Missing Power as "Suika's theme" in the fanbase thanks to a) SWR using it as Suika's theme; b) joining the "overexploited tracks club" alongside the likes of UN Owen, Bad Apple and Desire Drive. The appreciation for Missing Power (while it exists) is incredibly limited, but Broken Moon gets to bask in all the glory of a myriad vocal arranges, Suika PVs, etc. Not helping is that I believe if _any_ pre-battle theme deserved to secure a top spot in the fanbase, it should have been Flawless as Clothing of the Celestials. Broken Moon is a strong pre-battle theme, but Flawless as Clothing of the Celestials is the best there is. ❤ btw, want a recommendation of a Touhou CD track I really like? I recently caught myself loving Youkai Space Travel a lot. It silently worked its way into becoming my favorite CD track and will definitely be among my votes in the popularity poll. ❤
Outsider Cocktail from Old Adam Bar. intro leaves such a good impression but the rest of the song overstates a very repetitive melody on e.guitar and saw leads. it gets grating very quickly
personally? I love Peaceful Romancer, but those high notes at the end hurt my ears.... also while I do enjoy DiPP, again, some of the songs (Lotus Butterfly in particular) sound kinda grating
The thing i like the most about the touhou games is the deathbombing mechanics It feel a rash of dopamine everytime i land one As for least favourite songs? Hmmmm I actually can't think of anything right now They are all amazing or decent
Mine is either Oriental Dark Flight or White Flag of Usa Shrine, Oriental Dark Flight is just NOT a Marisa song at all and aside from the middle/end part the song is just boring, and Usa Shrine is just way too repetetive and could've been something much better for a theme for a trickster like Tewi.
I dont find myself really disliking any songs, probably because I have no music taste and will listen to anything, but at most I will find a song kinda mediocre but still appreciate what it does. If I were to choose songs I “dont” like, then probably WBaWC’s early themes and some of UM’s boss themes; minus the title and stage 1 themes or heck even Eika’s theme, the rest of the songs up until stage 4 just feel really boring and uninteresting, very similar to each other and otherwise just bland, especially compared to HSiFS’s stage and boss themes prior, and even then, I really only like the 2hu19 version of Yachie’s theme while the original feels powerless and empty, and same with Saki’s theme originally with tiny power from the drums. Meanwhile the stage themes of UM are great, really sell the calm and happy vibes, while the boss themes more or less sound basic, repetitive. and like ZUN tried to mix WbaWC and UM and didnt do very well, Sannyo’s theme is enjoy and even more so this year’s arrangement as while it is also repetitive, it also just feels more unique on a baseline level and also you cant go wrong with Theme of Eastern Story. Now, you might say “what about Misumaru’s theme, that is the definition of cookie-cutter and repetitive?” and while that is true, I also make an exception and actually like that one, so that’s that. Now to be clear, not all of my least favorites are that new, i dont much admire Flowering Night or Oriental Dark Flight for being so repetitive despite both having really good sections and melodies, and Faith is For The Transient People just gets overshadowed by the stage 5 theme and the 2hu19 version so yeah, and believe it or not I dont really enjoy listening to U.N. Owen or Necro-Fantasy, again really good songs but here the roughness of old Touhou kinda catches up; U.N. Owen feels too rough around the edges and Necro-Fantasy’s ZUNpet actively hurts my ears and sanity, and this is coming from someone who unironically puts PCB(or MoF) as their favorite ost and loves high-pitched ZUNpets, also because Necrofantasia I like more and feel does the melody a lot better, hence me not really enjoying Yorimashi, more than anything besides it feeling like a stand-in that song’s composition just feels and sounds really stupid to me, just constant runs that dont really build up to anything and then suddenly the main melody that I like PCB’s version a lot more; I also find both Speed Fox and 2hu19’s version to be a lot more enjoyable than the original Charming Domination.
oh.....I am quite disappointed that a zun cd song is the one you least liked. Especially one from TGA ,one of my favorite cd, only second to Magical Astronomy. But i guess people have a preferences and i agree that it is too calm and boring, but like the game devs they said its calm and pleasant is why they like it, and i agree too. Its calmness make it unique to zun usually energetic song, only other one i remember that is same same is legend of hourai (Menu ost dont count), and even that feels a little bit sad. To me this song is to just vibe , to listen to when i need to calm down , or a representation of an average day with nothing wrong with it, not bad , not good. And thats why i like it .But shanghai teahouse is goated frfr ok bye
I don't like Shou's Theme: The Tiger Patterned Vaisravana from UFO. I think it's one of the more boring boss themes and it fails to hype me up for the fight. Also my most frustrated moments are connected to this bossfight. Shou was a big roadblock and I think the Byakuren fight is way more enjoyable as a whole.
I don't like megumu's theme, it doesn't bring any coherent emotion, which is how I feel about megumu she's kinda of a boring character. Out of the Stage 6 boss themes my least favorite unoopularly enough is Pure Furies, it's just repetive and a bit annoying too, it still a good theme but definitely not the best. Retribution for the Eternal Night is weird for me, I always remember not liking it but it's a great theme, a bit repetitive but still great. I don't like the MA version of Demistify Feast, it's too heavy. Evening Star from IaMP is not a bad theme, it just feels incomplete. Atleast the CoST version does It justice.
I really don’t like Starry Mountain of Tenma. The many clashing instruments and melodies of the climax never really mesh together well for me and always just end up giving me a headache (no, seriously). This isn’t helped by the fact that many of the individual components of that mess are very shrill by themselves already.
My least favourite track would be Tenkuushou's Stage 1 theme - A Star of Hope Rises in the Blue Sky (and by extension A Midsummer Fairy's Dream but that one is somewhat better (it sounds too peaceful which makes it boring) and the fight with Eternity lasts 30 seconds). I don't like the instrumentation and the fake chiptuney sounds. It sounds a bit too cheerful for my tastes and the melody doesn't go anywhere. However, the most deciding factor is the Stage it appears in itself. I hate this Stage 1 with all my passion, it's way too easy to die accidentally before the boss and the opening fairies are just too much. Pair that with the poor visibility of the entirety of HSiFS and you've got a problem. The theme is eargrating to listen to and I'd say even annoying after constant resetting in Stage 1 or Stage 2. While it may not be so bad when listening to it outside the game, I wholeheartedly despise it when it plays in the game. In conclusion, HSiFS is my least favourite game in the franchise and it contains my least favourite ZUN composition.
It would be a good background music (for a youtube video) tho. Also, based "The Ground's Color is Yellow" enjoyer. 10.5's OST written by Akiyama is underrated.
Youyou Kengeki Musou has a really good remix version of this song but it has the exact opposite mood, instead of being a chilling relaxing track its just absolutely hype and energetic all the way through, along with a sick solo it doesnt need as for songs i dislike, i cant think of any in particular, touhou songs are just boring and unmemorable at worst
@@arutezza it’s funny when looking up remixes to use for the credits, that was one of the only ones. I guess Anakae Spa likes using the song so much because it can represent all three fairies of light
I’ve heard this as well but I don’t really think it’s a distinction to get hung up over since most people would know what you’re talking about anyways.
Interesting choice! "The Fairies' Adventurous Tale" is a song I don't really think much about, but when I listen to it I can go "oh yeah I like this one :)". As for my least favorite Touhou song... it's probably "Lonesome Werewolf", Kagerou's theme. It's just kind of unremarkable and all over the place, in my opinion. I don't think DDC's instrument set does it any favors, either -- the electric guitar tends to be very hit-or-miss in Touhou songs, and I think this track in particular is the worst offender. Honorable mention goes to the Neo-traditionalism of Japan arrange of "Unknown X ~ Unfound Adventure", though. It has... a bit too much going on for me to really like it, especially when compared to the original version, so I always end up skipping it. It's the first thing that comes to mind when I think "Touhou song I straight-up dislike".
@@Megapig9001yes that i feel is the main issue with a lot of cd arranges, the fact that ZUN “has” to change the instruments in every arrangement, and specifically the percussion, and while the percussion now is pretty good, it will never match up to the raw, harsh, and powerful sounds of gator kit that are vital to many songs that use them, the drums most well known as the “Touhou drums”. I have a similar issue as yours with dboa’s lost emotion, it uses elementic, definitely the worst drums ZUN has ever used, and overall just makes the song much less powerful and subdued, the two complete opposites of what made me like the song in the first place, the weird bass and off kilter piano mix really well with the clash of the soft flute and strong rickenbacker and drums which really feels like a summarization of kokoro as a whole in a single song
my least favorites are the seihou arranges for the sc88pro; silk road alice, and dichromatic lotus butterfly and you my ask, why the "arranges"? Just listen to them. headphone/any audio equipment really. warning.
I personally really dislike Seigas theme from Touhou 12. It sounds like very stereotypical boss music in my opinion. The stsge theme however, Desire Drive, is an absolute masterpiece
Might be cheating to use PC-98, but The Tank Girl's Dream just gives me a headache when I hear it. There's not much going on in the song, even by ZUN's standards at the time, and it's so short and repetitive
@@somefries3101 To each their own. Futo has the nice flute (or strings?) near the middle that pairs well with the electric instruments. Shou’s theme is kinda boring and feels like it’s building up to a payoff that doesn’t happen. I understand why others don’t enjoy Futo’s theme, but I enjoy it :)
@@Mr_Noname084 Futo's theme just isn't it, it's not even up for a fifth boss theme, it's not memorable at all, why would you slap such boring background music theme in a stage where climax is key, it doesn't make any sense.

After that, the "chorus" gives hope, but no. Repeating 2 bars again, but on the 4th and 8th bars there are different resolutions, repeat 16 bars.
I feel the same, but Night of Nights is still a bop.
:(
Swr does it justice

@@Megapig9001 A theme song I really don’t like is Nue’s theme because I feel like it’s like a school project someone has and does very well in the beginning. Only for me to be dissatisfied in the end because they never planned for the middle but only the first and last parts. What is your favorite stage theme. A theme that’s not a boss theme. For me it’s “A rose blooming in the underworld” or “Lunate Elf”
Such an interesting song to call your least favorite, Although changing your opinion is impossible this song to me is not bad, I really enjoy this era of ZUN music because of the rising action of many of the songs here.
I love the Touhou bass, like the one in Utsuho's theme or Skies Beyond the Clouds.
For me it's Hidden Star in Four Seasons title theme, and my reason for this is that it hurts to listen to it.
Lol it hurts me to listen to Nue’s theme.
@@Mothlight88 This song you hate? Yeah.. It’s going in.. ITS GOING IN MY PLAYLIST.
It feels so much more… Mature more cynical. It sounds so serious and the tones that are established are maintained from the start. What don’t you like about it?”
I’m surprised to see it wasn’t SoEW’s boss theme for “Five Magic Stones” as the least favorite song.
@@ShinSHOGO that’s a very solid pick that song is boring
wdym I like that songTho I'm biased towards TH02 lol, I personally think its OST is better than TH04. Maybe because I started with TH02
@@ShinSHOGO The only thing more boring than the song is the Magic Stones themselves. They may have terrified Reimu, but they're just stones... There are midbosses in SoEW that never get dialogue or anything, and the boss is just some stones?!
omiwa legend
I love the bass in Touhou, whether it be Utsuho's theme of Iku's pre-battle theme. Though the bass in those htemes are quiet.
I probably will be mauled for saying this, but my least favorite touhou theme is Magus Night from Great Fairy Wars.
I'm not entirely sure if it's a remix of the original Seihou theme (they share names iirc)
But it just doesn't hit like the Seihou version does.
You nailed my problems with this very track.
btw, want a recommendation of a Touhou CD track I really like? I recently caught myself loving Youkai Space Travel a lot. It silently worked its way into becoming my favorite CD track and will definitely be among my votes in the popularity poll. ❤
I never really cared for Strawberry Crisis. I respect people who like it, but it's just way too repetitive for me.
I don’t know a single thing about Hifuu
Never looked into it surprisingly.
I recommend looking into it. The music is good. :)
Outsider Cocktail from Old Adam Bar. intro leaves such a good impression but the rest of the song overstates a very repetitive melody on e.guitar and saw leads. it gets grating very quickly
YESS outsider cocktail ;-;
personally? I love Peaceful Romancer, but those high notes at the end hurt my ears.... also while I do enjoy DiPP, again, some of the songs (Lotus Butterfly in particular) sound kinda grating
The thing i like the most about the touhou games is the deathbombing mechanics
It feel a rash of dopamine everytime i land one
As for least favourite songs?
Hmmmm
I actually can't think of anything right now
They are all amazing or decent
Mine is either Oriental Dark Flight or White Flag of Usa Shrine, Oriental Dark Flight is just NOT a Marisa song at all and aside from the middle/end part the song is just boring, and Usa Shrine is just way too repetetive and could've been something much better for a theme for a trickster like Tewi.
I dont find myself really disliking any songs, probably because I have no music taste and will listen to anything, but at most I will find a song kinda mediocre but still appreciate what it does. If I were to choose songs I “dont” like, then probably WBaWC’s early themes and some of UM’s boss themes;
minus the title and stage 1 themes or heck even Eika’s theme, the rest of the songs up until stage 4 just feel really boring and uninteresting, very similar to each other and otherwise just bland, especially compared to HSiFS’s stage and boss themes prior, and even then, I really only like the 2hu19 version of Yachie’s theme while the original feels powerless and empty, and same with Saki’s theme originally with tiny power from the drums.
And thats why i like it .But shanghai teahouse is goated frfr ok bye
my least favourite is crystalized silver
@@MedsieLovr was waiting for someone to say Tenma. I think the composition is solid, but the instrumentation lets the track down
I really don’t like Starry Mountain of Tenma.
Youyou Kengeki Musou has a really good remix version of this song but it has the exact opposite mood, instead of being a chilling relaxing track its just absolutely hype and energetic all the way through, along with a sick solo it doesnt need
as for songs i dislike, i cant think of any in particular, touhou songs are just boring and unmemorable at worst
@@arutezza it’s funny when looking up remixes to use for the credits, that was one of the only ones. I guess Anakae Spa likes using the song so much because it can represent all three fairies of light
Am I the only one that doesn’t like Nues theme?
There is no lyrics, therefore it is a piece
I’ve heard this as well but I don’t really think it’s a distinction to get hung up over since most people would know what you’re talking about anyways.
@@sistershisuta6544Mhm the word “song” is often used as a colloquialism. I believe it’s a byproduct of the bastardization of English.
@@Pro-Diletante the power of English is and always has been the ability to make shit up and have it make sense.
@@JLippe if we talk about CD versions that are worse than the original, the Old Adams version of Makai City has horrible drums that destroy the song
Youkai Shrine's Back Road (TD extra) irks me and I don't know why

I personally really dislike Seigas theme from Touhou 12. It sounds like very stereotypical boss music in my opinion. The stsge theme however, Desire Drive, is an absolute masterpiece
I don't like Yuyuko's theme.
Might be cheating to use PC-98, but The Tank Girl's Dream just gives me a headache when I hear it. There's not much going on in the song, even by ZUN's standards at the time, and it's so short and repetitive
my least favourite touhou song is probably oriental dark flight. I just think it sounds rather boring and is really repetitive
Oriental Dark Flight's come up quite a few times in the comments and I'm inclined to agree. It's probably my least favorite song from 9.
