    The hook on a tape measure is designed to move the thickness of the hook. It’s for when you measure inside corners and BUMP the tape measure then when you HOOK the tape on your material you are cutting, the hook adjusts to make up the thickness of the hook. If yours doesn’t move, your measurements aren’t as accurate.

    That little bit of movement on just the tip of the tape measure is designed that way intentionally. The thickness of the tip is exactly the distance of the slight amount of back & forth movement. Love your videos, man.

    • @jerrycoon4504
      @jerrycoon4504 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I was just going to type that. If you hook it and measure or butt it up against a shoulder, that movement compensates for the thickness of the tab.

    Tape measures have that play in the end to account for the thickness of the end. That way you can push or pull a measurement and get the same reading. If the end is 1/16" thick it will have 1/16" play in the rivets. Your tapes are probably all fine. Love the vid's, thanks for the tips.

    You know the tape measure is supposed to that right. Because there is a difference between inside measurements and outside measurements. That difference is the width of the right angled clip.

    Thanks for the tape measure tip. As a millennial I struggle with basic things like this. :D

  • @thomasng6870
    @thomasng6870 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Allyn! The end of the tape measure is loose on purpose. The reason being is that if you were to measure an inside measurement, you butt the end into the corner, that will zero out the tape measure and account of the thickness of the end piece. For an outside measurement, you pull on the end piece until it's taught.

    • @TheLawnCareNut
      @TheLawnCareNut  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Thomas Ng yes and when measuring like I did, if you are not pulling taught on both measurements you will be thrown off that thickness. As far as how loose that's why I don't snap them back or then stretch out and throw them off more.

    Allyn - Thanks for posting great content. Question for newly established lawns - in this case Winter Lawns, when would you start cutting back water in preparation for it's first mow? I just did my first mow on my front lawn and struggled with the grass just flopping over from being run over by the lawn mower. I'm looking at doing my first mow this coming weekend on my backyard (1800sq/ft) and would prefer not to run into that issue on such a large area so your advice is greatly appreciated!

    Question: so I live in western NC, and I’ve been mowing and taking care of yards for a while now, but I’m just now getting into the real detail oriented stuff. For my personal yard I wanna dominate my neighbor who has moved into a house with nice grass. My yard is always mowed and edged, with all of its nice bits and pieces but my grass is a total conglomerate. Any ideas of what grass I should use?

    So i have a nube question.. You are the only lawn guy i follow.. I live in southern California and got tall fescue going from seed.. I was wondering if i can mix in some Bermuda seed.. And if both those grasses will grow good together.. Or any suggestions on grasses that grow together.. Or if im going about this all wrong.. Thanks... I would appreciate your input..

    • @hotrodhog2170
      @hotrodhog2170 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bermuda likes to be cut short like a golf course. Tall Fescue likes to be cut like its name, Tall. If you cut it tall, the Fescue will shade the bermuda and it might not grow right. If you cut it short you will open yourself up to weeds and disease in the fescue.

    Question and A Comment
    1. I can't remember, was that concrete edging there or did you have it installed? Thinking about doing it, but not sure how expensive it is....
    2. Jerry Baker trick for a very quick green, 50/50 plain ammonia and dish soap in one of those miracle grow type hose end sprayers, might be a quick cheat 36-48 hours before Halloween visitors....

    That "flutter" on the tape measure is intentional. The movement is equal to the thickness of the 90 degree end catch. That way whether you pull with the catch on the inside or you butt it up to a surface on the outside, both measurements will be accurate. It's only possible with the "flutter"

    Allyn, just 3 days before Halloween Domination someone's dog made a brown spot smack in the front of my Tall Fescue lawn... Im so frustrated with these neighborhood dogs and their disrespectful owners.... what do I do? How do I recover? I cant train other people's dogs to not go on my lawn, and I cant talk to everyone within walking distance of my home (thats probably hundreds of dog owners). From what i understand tall fescue wont even spread to fill in the spot. Do I have to seed these spots? If so, I will have to do that several times a month. My lawn will be in perma germination mode... what can I do to my tall fescue to A) promote to fill in the spots/recover B) be more tolerant to dog pee? HALP!

    • @mrdavebach
      @mrdavebach 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to hear I'm not the only one frustrated with the neighborhood dogs. Make that the neighborhood dog owners. It's really just three owners to be exact but when you care about your lawn as much as some of us do it's hard to let it go and move on. Personally, I'm planning to go in a direction that is more common down in Australia. I'm seriously considering putting in hedges. This would be a natural way to combat the problem and give me a whole new way to dominate the neighborhood and improve the look of my landscaping.

      In our neighborhood trick or treating is one of the best ways to meet all of your neighbors. Those with kids walk the neighborhood. Those without or whose kids have grown hang out and treat the kids to candy, sometimes a beverage for the adults, and it's a great time for all. If it gets cold a fire table or chimenea might make their way from back patios to the driveways out front to keep everyone warm.
      After trick or treating has wrapped up we all meet up at city hall for the best lawn awards. Okay, maybe we don't have awards but secretly I'm hoping my lawn is podium worthy come October 31st.

    LCN I have superglued some of my measuring tapes on the 2 or 3 rivets to keep them from moving, usually I just take out my metal ruler , pull my tape over that measurement and that will usually equate to the tape and being extended, then I just locked the measuring tape in place, check the measurements on the tape and the metal ruler, and superglue the rivets once they are aligned, hope this helps. I totally understand about the cold / dormant season, Most of my Southern turf grasses - lawns have slowed down growing also. Generally speaking in the off season we go to biweekly cuts or once a month, and focus on other lawn care needs.

      I am sure someone will comment about my comment here, but I am aware of the slack in the measuring tapes end piece, and what it is for, but I just personally like a true 1/16th measurement, especially for the construction side of my business, I rarely need caulk for trim work, yes this includes , Chair railing, baseboards, quarter round, crown, custom cabinetry, you name it, but hey I am just OCD like that. Even my hard wood flooring work has to be perfect 👌, I guess it’s from all the years of making furniture, along with some other skills. Anyway back to the 1/16 measurement, I like a true measurement, I would compare to a baker / cook who doesn’t use a measuring cup, And one who does, maybe that’s not the best analysis of comparison, Maybe a better one is a machinist, who does CNC work, (nascar team) vs. local -back yard -shade tree mechanic.

    There is actually, literally, a design purpose to the end of the tape measure being 1/16? loose.

    You say you love to cut the grass but every time you cut the the grass you are way over 1/3 rule. Cmon man! And the tape measure tip is suppose to do that. It is for pushing the tip vs pulling the tip during measurement. It fluctuates the width of the tip

      If you are talknig about the beginning, that's 4 days growth. It's just super thick so it makes it look much taller than it is. As far as the tape measure stuff - I refer you to last week's video! thanks for watching.

    Clearly you don’t know how to use a tape measure. That “slack” is supposed to be there. Let me know if you need further schooling

    You should redo the entire lawn with Tall Fescue. Your last lawn looked amazing when you had it. Not so much with this one.
