Deer Bedding Area Maintenance to Enhance Your Hunting Property

- We were in the middle of a true Minnesota spring snowstorm when I shot this video, but there wasn't much else I could do, so I figured it was a good day to get to work. This is another bedding area clean-up project that I'd been putting off. I was glad to see just how much cover has been created in this bedding area in the form of woody regeneration. This is another area on the farm that used to be a spot you could see right through, now it is actively providing food and cover for deer and actually holding deer. A chainsaw is a beautiful tool.

Your doing an awesome job Sir!.
Makes me giggle. I was doing this stuff years ago. Kept it quite cuz I figured people would LOL at me.
You are getting better and better as you grow.
I appreciate finding anyone that was doing this stuff before it was "cool" ;) People may still think it's crazy but normally the ones doing the work get the last laugh!
looks awesome!
Thanks David!
Great work Sam, I did the exact thing this last weekend going back after 2 years of the original Hinge cut bedding area and was amazed how it was being used. I actually use marking Tape about every 50ft to mark the deer trails. Take care
That's fantastic to hear Scott! That's the kinda stuff that keeps pushing a guy to stay at it
If you have any conifers planted inside your cutting areas take some the smaller "junk" trees and cut them into 4 foot chunks. Then take the chunks and stack them around around the conifers. The chunks of wood will act as "mulch" and help suppress the weeds that are competing with your conifers. I install 5 oz landscape fabric to all of my conifers and then either a bag of mulch or some chunks of "junk" wood. Your conifers will grow exponentially faster. Weeds, and especially grass are their mortal enemy. I use 4x4 fabric mats.
Great idea. I did a video on x-out tree mats a while back. Worked fantastic and they absorb water and biodegrade over time.
Looks awesome great job
Appreciate it!
keep up the great work, bud!!!
Thanks brother!
Great info once again appreciate your content sam! What's your go-to spruce? Norway? Thanks
Thanks brother! I use a variety but if I had to pick one black hills are the most winter hardy
What species is all the woody regen/saplings with the dead leaves still hanging on?
Mostly ironwood and a few red oak
