I was walking back to my tent with a friend at Leeds Fest this weekend when we heard the four part harmonies of this band and were drawn to the tent. Now we can honestly both say that it was the best music we heard the whole festival and were singing the chorus of this all day every day; shouting 'Macintayaaaaaaah' at each other. The purest singing at the Festival by far, I couldn't help smiling at it
I love how these lads singlehandedly preserved folk music, which is in its dreary days. Hopefully "Rant" will be the start of a new era of the genre, entirely. I honestly don't care what these lads choose to do, they always sound damn brilliant in the end. Bless those Futureheads.
I love this. I had to look it up after I was drinking with the manager of the bar that I work at. (My night off) It was just a handful of friends and we turned off the music in the bar and the manager (who moved here from Ireland) sang it, except it was at a slower tempo
This is fuckin excellent! Makes me want to sit in a "proper pub" all day, (preferably a sunday) amongst good friends. Talking shite till no logic exists, playing cards, going in rounds you can't keep up with!
Love this interpretation! As a side note, A friend and I jammed out a rough emocore version of Old Dunn Cow and I'm sending people your link of an original of the song for contrast.
I realize my words are a bit much, but nevertheless, they have managed to make a noteworthy surge of awareness for the genre. And you're right, others like Frank Turner do deserve the credit, I'm just a tad overzealous when it comes to The Futureheads.
Some friends and I in a pulic house were playing dominos one night Into the room the barman came his face a ghastly white What's up says Brown Have you seen a ghost Have you seen your Aunt Myriah "Oh my Aunt Myriah be buggered!" says he "The bloody pub's on fire!" "On Fire !" Says Brown "What a bit of Luck. Everybody follow me. Into the cellar if the fire's not there we'll have a rare old spree!" So we all went down after good old Brown the booze we could not miss And we were'nt there 5 minutes or more when we were all half pissed CHORUS And there was Brown, upside down Lappin' up the whiskey on the floor Booze Booze the firemen cried as they came knockin' at the door Don't let them in till it's all mopped up Somebody shouted "MacIntyre" And we all got blue blind paralytic drunk When the Old Dun COw caught fire Then Smith went over to the port wine tub gave it a few hard knocks started taken' off his pantaloons likewise his shoes and socks "Hold on!" Says Brown "You can't do that! We can't have that in here! Don't go washin' your trotters in the port wine tub when we've got all this lite beer" CHORUS And then there came an awful crash half the roof gave way We were drowned in the fireman's hose BUt still we were going to stay So we got some tacks and our old wet slacks and nailed ourselves inside And we sat there swallyin' pints of stout till we were bleary eyed!
Well done! They've gone back to the original Harry Wincott version, though the tune is more like the Copper brothers. There's also one from Harry Champion (I've lost the link but it's on the Net), with a slightly different tune. I'm always amused by the thought of Bob Copper, ex-publican, singing this. Imagine what dear decent Bob would have said if his pub had caught fire and his customers had looted it . . .
Tom Brown and I in the local pub, Were playing dominos one night, When all of a sudden in the postman rushed, His face all chalky white. "Hey what's up?", said Brown, "Have you seen a ghost? Have you seen your Aunty Mariah?" "Well, me Aunt Mariah be blown", said he, "The bloody pub's on fire!" Oh, there was Brown upside down, He was moppin' up the whisky on the floor. "Booze, booze!" the firemen cried, As they came knockin' at the door. Don't let them 'in til it's all mopped up, Some

My grandpa sung the "there was brown" veryse to me as a kid a lot.... I never really knew where it came from but I grew up on the Old Kent Road where there is the Old Dun Cow previously a pub and now a doctors surgery. And the fire station was located almost directly opposite it. He sang it slightly differently and added 'Cor Blimey's' in there and the lyrics slightly different. It's weird hearing it as an irish drinking song and not as a cockney song. They added a "Your son is deaaaaaad" bit to the end as it was used as a way of telling a family that there son had died at war by making them laugh first so it wasn't as big of a blow.

Same! My highlight of the weekend. Really good.
Easily the best version of this on TH-cam.

this was BLOODY SUPERB at Brownstock, great stuff with the crowd singing...
This was amazing last year at the Sage. One of the best gigs I've ever been to.
Love this interpretation! As a side note, A friend and I jammed out a rough emocore version of Old Dunn Cow and I'm sending people your link of an original of the song for contrast.
Sun der land sun der land!!!
Very nice, guys.
They hail from Sunderland and are brilliant live

bruuutaal
single handedly preserved folk music is a bit of a stretch when blokes like frank turner are around
i swear this used to be on spotify
It's back
look deeper than frank turner for folk and you'll find a whole world full of amazing artists. million dead, not frank turner.
My grandad wrote this 😅

Erin Howard the song is a Mackem drinking song from the Sunderland/Durham area not London and certainly not Ireland
No it isn't. It's by Harry Champion, a London musichall artist famous for 'Any Old Iron'.
Dropkick Murphys suck.
This is weird
How
What's weird is that more bands don't do a cappella folk songs in pubs.
