The beauty of this ending really comes into play if you choose to save others. The Pods talked about the Androids potentially repeating the mistakes of the past, at one point in-game you read about how the machines mimicked humanity, repeating humanity's failures. By choosing to help others you sacrifice your save data. What eventually happens when you start a new game? The Androids make the same mistakes. This game is just on another level.
Added to the fact that the game starts with a white fade transition, possibly implying that, as you start a new game, they will end up being banished to go back doing this stuff over and over again, truly living up to what 2B said in her foreword right there. And perhaps, by accepting the fact that they will have grisly fates no matter what-at least for the tone of the narrative of this game and the franchise in general-that by saving them isn't really worth the time, sacrifice, and effort, and that it will only prolong the trio's suffering much further and needlessly delay the inevitable, moments that they will never really savor nor cherish; the only way to end that cycle... ...is to just let go of them and leave them dead by choosing Ending D, etc,. thus putting them to rest once and for all, then ultimately, deleting the save file *manually,* put down the controller, and never play the game ever again.. simple as that.
Even though the pods talked about how they might repeat the same mistakes again I don't see that happening. The bunker is gone and it looks like the machine life forms connected to the network might also just have left with the ark. On top of that those machine girls in the tower most likely left with the ark too, so no one to hack and infect 9s, 2B and A2. In order for them to repeat the same mistakes the same conditions have to be met and that is impossible.
whats funny is hes relatively new and some of the first major roles he got was he voices mikazuki from iron blooded orphans and mob from mob psycho, both shows where the character DONT emote save for rare moments and even then not that much, then you turn around and see him here and the guy is emoting his ass off throughout all of branch C
You know the expression, "Build me up to break me down" ? This game's story did the opposite of that. It was so depressing and kept breaking you down, only to reach out and pick you up at the end! It was pretty hard to contain my happiness after that.

Yeah, too damn depressing. I love the first playthrough tho. Second was good too, but 3rd playthrough is pure hell. Too difficult, repitive chapters, and lots of bullshit hacking. I fucking hate it. If I had played just the first playthrough, this game would be 10/10. However, the 3rd playthrough was so annoying that it drops points. I still love this game. Especially music.
there is some cruel irony here: 9S wanted to avenge 2B, 2B uploaded her memories into her sword and gave it to A2, but in the end 9S ends up being "stabbed by 2B".
Pod 042 states during route C that 2B's memories are starting to be absorbed into A2. In the end, the essence of 2B is there at the final battle with 9S...

God I love pod 042. Best boy of the century. I love how this little flying toaster grew so attached to 2B and even A2 that he wants to see them survive. I can't decide who my favorite character is between 042, Pascal, and Father Servo.
"Personal data deletion request denied." - Pod 042. That was IMO the most badass sentence I've read in the game. By the time the player have seen both ending C and D, anyone who's not a psychopath would cry out "FOR FUCK'S SAKE, CAN'T THESE POOR ANDROIDS CATCH A BREAK?!" or something like that. And then 042 just stated what we, the players, would say in that moment:"FUCK YOUR DELETION REQUEST". And then he would express the thought we have exactly in our heart:"You hoped they would survive as well, didn't you?" Pod 042, despite being a pod, the most logical, robotic existence in the game, in that instance, became almost the closest resemblance to "human" in this game.
So 9S kills A2 and still dies... _by falling on her sword._ Holy shit, did Yoko just write down "make this guy's life the most ungodly hell imaginable" for 9S's character notes or whatever the term is, and call it a day?
Well let's be fair. He couldn't survive the battle against A2. In ending C, A2 beats him and hacks into him to remove the virus and in ending D, A2 still beats him but stops because of 2E's flashback and that's why 9S stabbed her.
At the very end, there are 5 doves that fly away, and one dove that stays behind with A2. At the very beginning of the game there are 6 YorHa pilots. Five of them die; one lives.

When I was introduced to A2, it seemed like she was an almost feral killing machine in A and B with seemingly no redeeming qualities. How my opinion changed over time. She gave 2B a merciful, dignified death, preserved 2B's memories, spared 9S multiple times, was honest throughout, and we learn the horrific past she endured shaping who she became. I loved the way my perceptions of 2B and 9S changed over time as well and feel great sympathy for all of them. The three protagonists were fantastic characters.

Where does it say that?), but that's probably because: 1) those other 2B were not running to an isolated location to protect comrades from a logic virus (because that only happens once) - A2 can understand and respect that due to her Pearl Harbor descent memories 2) they always attacked her first on orders from the Bunker 3) she didn't have time to...emotionally grow (including from meeting Pascal) - since it's all between 11942-11945 (or around that) - AND this is something everyone in NieR has to do and eventually does. Moving from the one "treasure" each machine has (and androids, especially YoRHa with their machine core black boxes) to the full range of emotions/sentience/understanding. EVERYONE does it: - 2B from killing 9S on orders (duty) to regret and trying to save him and love - 9S from not wanting to be alone or curiosity to love (and then other bad things) -Adam from hate to watching over the sleeping Eve in the Ark databanks -Plato 1728 from trying his best (wanting to be accepted or useful)...from conformity to his connecting with the doll (or whatever that counts as, friendship + being capable to understand why the other machines reacted the way they did with the doll purge, since they still didn't understand) -A2 from revenge to seeing the world as beautiful and trying to save someone -N2 from freedom (of the command from the aliens) to hope and preservation

Im going to assume that if people are watching this, they completely finished the game. I just want to say that they had some serious balls killing off 2B, the main character, halfway through the story. Thats the first time I can ever remember a videogame doing that. I was totally expecting her to come back later on in the story.
There is one game that came out on the PS2 that did that, and it was 10 times more "fuck you" than Automata. I don't want to say the name if you end up playing it. It's part of one of the biggest videogame franchises.

Most of the ending is left open which I kinda appreciate much like nier automata it’s over all theme is finding purpose and a reason to keep going in a hopeless and meaningless world where your whole existence was based on a lie. The fact they only tell that 2B 9S and A2 where given their lives back and nothing else is really nice cause there’s so many things they could do. Would they regroup with what’s left of the resistance fighters and rebuild. Would they just stay with each other and move on. Or do they try and rebuild a new world themselves. It doesn’t matter what does matter as that for the first time in there hundreds or maybe thousands of years of life, it’ll be “their choice” and no one else’s
Ending D is the most sad to me. 9S loses his mind and kills A2 but falls on 2B sword. It symbolizes 2B killing 9S one last time even after she died.....

this doesn't show, but when it asks you "do you still wish for them to survive" anisd choosing yes sets you all the way back down to the credits, where you must fight the them like you were hacking. for me, after fighting and reaching the Square Enix title, I got overpowered by all the projectiles and died...but it gave me a chance again to go on. after about two to three tries, I kept dying from the Square Enix, producer, sound titles etc, then I got a message of inspiration from a player who passed the true credit ending before me, then after dying again, the game itself starts to motivate you to keep going by saying things like "DO YOU THINK GAMES ARE SILLY" "DO YOU THINK THIS IS MEANINGLESS" (something like that). as you keep dying, more messages from past players show up on your screen. I eventually cried as I start reading the words of fellow players and even the game I've now come to love rooting me on to achieve this real ending. NieR is really a one of a kind game, I've never felt true inspiration from a game before.
And at the end it gives you other players "bots" to help you and become a giant megacannon with which you are able to actually beat those last credits, and every time you get hit you see a real username dissapear, which hurts so much knowing you lost a "real" Person there. And it hurts doubly so when at the end you get the choice to save another players life by sacrificing your save data, and my theory is that they mean you offer your "bot" to help someone else go trough that impossible end credit scene as you have been helped and its only one life you are offering. That whole end credits scene gave me the same kind of happy, motivational, optimistic and yet somewhat mournful feeling as Journey did in the end, yet this game trumped even that in my opinion. A true masterpiece. Too bad the other Yoko Taro games dont have the Platinum games gameplay polish, id really love to play them otherwise. I really really hope this partnership doesnt end here.
Oxdox they actually aswell as 2a get brought back at the very end. Though, with aliens, humans, and most machines dead it would be those 3 and the resistance androids left. Possibly Pascal aswell
It won't surprise me if Yoko Taro was trolling all along and revealed that Ending E was analogous to the false struggle of the YoRHa (respectively fighting for hope and humans), and all his explanations and statements about that ending were all just a ruse.
I consider it a good ending anyway. We don't get a happy ending where we'd see 9s and 2b reunite and live on together, but at least, its possibility is implied.

We don’t see beyond the final concert script (the real one where they wake up) of 2B and 9S, but they reunite and vow the following: 9S: Even if this world is full of curses, even if the world punishes us.. 2B: We continue to resist everything within that spiral. Taro calls Ending E, and officially beyond it, an ending he believed 2B and 9S would have hoped for-and that these characters moved toward that ending themselves. Furthermore, he’s said the ending itself is meant for us to find hope outside the game. Really thoughtful :)

Nice sense of irony, 9S being killed by 2B's sword in the end, even if she wasn't the one wielding it. I really hope this game gets DLC somewhere down the road to continue on with the story of A2, 2B, and 9S after the events of ending E.
If not DLC at least a novel or something, I've come to love these characters from all I've seen of Nier Automata and I hate cliff hangers, not that this is really a cliff hanger but its a vague but conclusive ending.
I disagree. I think this ending is perfect because we can imagine ourselves how the future will go. Will they repeat the tragedy or will they find a new way, it's best to leave it to interpretation. At least until there's another sequel which won't be for a number of years I'd assume. I'm content with this ending.

I chose ending D over C my first time around. 9S is probably one of my favorite character's in a game and seeing all that pent up emotion and anger almost literally spewing out of him when the fight finishes was hard to watch. Not a lot of games can do that. This game has everything: music, gameplay, story, characters, comic relief. Nothing feels too "japanese" apart from the grunts and sighs from the characters. Here's hoping yoko taro gives us a nier: gestalt remake.
The ending E is astonishing, one of the most powerful moments I experienced in games ever. This is absolutely and no doubt one of the very best game experiences I've ever had.
I do hope that when 2B and 9S had their new life, and after all these memories restored, they can live together with each other(I think somehow they love each other). For A2...I don't know what her life will be(but she got great ass, you know). Afterall, no more Yorha, they are not constraints to wipe out machines anymore. Maybe at least 2B and 9S can start learning human's history and culture, then getting evolved. Simply just my fantasy, haha.
nah, If you read the novel that was just recently translated by rekka (check the reddit) you can tell that 9S is well aware of what 2B is. Or at least have a clue of what is going on, and still love her. Remember A2's sentence "but you already know that, dont you ?" 9s really is too smart for his own good, but this is good news for 2B/9S shippers like me. This boat is ready to sail !

That's reassuring, though I wouldn't be too excited about it lest Yoko cooks up yet another twist where like, what happened in the actual performance was just figments of 2B and 9S's imaginations/memories/dreams being relayed and re-lived by the pods one more time, and the "original" script in some form was the actual ending all along (with 9S waking up AFTER 2B had sputtered out, and eventually killing himself as well).
i was deeply moved by the true ending of this game. i was inspired to leave a supportive word for those struggling with the final segment of the game, and it read as follows. "you and i, we're the same. that being said, you're worthless."

Ray Valentine I don't think Death Stranding will be as good as NieR. If Phantom Pain was any indication, it shows that Kojima is much more interested in high-budget productions with sweeping marketing campaigns and massive open-worlds than actually doing anything substantial with them. I'll always respect him for MGS1-4, but I'm not entirely convinced with Death Stranding after the wasted potential pandemonium of MGSV.
I will still have faith in Kojima, though. He has his own team and everything now, and yes, he's brought us the MGS Series (which has shortcomings on its own) but as a consumer of video games, a gamer, I will always have a personal bias for the wonderful producers who have made my childhood days brighter :)
my mom walked in my room during ending D right as 9S and A2 stabbed each other and blood was spewing all over the place and looked at me with a priceless expression on her face. Literally the one time she's even seen anything about this game. Perfect timing. Maybe she'll catch the game at another bad moment as I retrace my now nonexistent save file on my second playthrough?
For the question of whether they'll repeat the same events as before, I think it will be different this time. They have the same physical bodies, the same memories, the same everything, but the circumstances are different. They now know that fighting the war no longer has a purpose. And even if they didn't know because of partially fragmented memories, the Pods can explain it to them. And If they need to find some kind of purpose, eh, 2B's hobby for fishing's a start lol. I hope that Adam and Eve, Devola and Popola can be happy wherever they've been sent off to. Even if they don't find a particular planet or regain their physical bodies, they'll still be together the whole way in the ark as if they did have bodies, evidenced from Adam holding Eve while he's sleeping. Something I'm worried about is, if all their memories were restored, do they still have the virus? Their memories were salvaged, so perhaps it might be partial or whole, but does what was salvaged include or exclude the virus?
The virus pretty much had no effect on 9S because it 'surged' when he was dead set on fighting A2 anyway, plus he was 100% in control during their fight. I think with the help of the pods they'll cure him and then 9S will do the same to 2B.
this game was a 10/10 experience. Best game of 2017. Truely a beautiful masterpiece. The love and the time spent on the storyline and combat is just. Wow.
"Perhaps now we understand that not everything has to have an answer." That was one of a handful of lines that really resonated with me. It was the mechanical pods coming to terms with their new found humanness, and for him to admit that in such a logical way was really powerful. The game talks about "meaning" of things and the "point" of existing multiple times, but I always think meaning is something *YOU* should give it to your action. Some people delete their save because they want to help others, some say its pointless because you get help from dev even nobody delete the save. I delete my 100% save simply because I wanted my wish of them having a better life would be granted. That is my meaning of doing so.
To all those who sacrificed their saves to help me.....thank you. :'( I couldn't have done it without you. I made sure that when I was done, I returned the favor for those who need it. If you were able to complete the secret ending alone, I salute you!
So.. In the "Ending E" B2 and 9S still alive.. And in the scripts of the "Ending E", we can read this: "2B woke up after pods repaired her and carries back 9S from ark tower to resistance camp and try to reboot him. She got some help from Jackass and finally managed to do so. 2B alone dig up the collapsed tower ruins to recover 9S's memory fragment. The pod warned her to stop and propose immediate maintenance but she didn't. Admist several system shutdown and bleeding, (although the blood drips through and her sensory motors became numb.) she recoverd the piece, rebooted 9S and brought him back. There also some hidden dialogues that made me cry instant. Gosh she loves 9S a lot, she just never admits it. At final, it's said that all machines data are gone up with the ark, but the fighting would still continue." I Dont Know, if A2 wake up, or recover your own memories

I hope there is another game or at least a DLC where 2B and 9s and possibly A2 are happy and alive. They can maybe reunite. I really loved 9S and 2B together and watching their relationship progress and wish to see more of it. It was so heartbreaking seeing 9S gradually go into deep insanity after losing 2B

I held it together for this whole game. The mind fucks, the quirks, the insanely melancholy story line. Pod 042 to Pod 153, data deletion request is denied. Lost it. Gets me every time.
Taro Yoko did an amazing job at conflicting players with mind ravaging ideas and moral dilemas. The game makes you THINK and I believe that's the real reward of not only ending E, but of the entire game. With that being said, I personally felt more riveted at the ideas presented throughout the game than at the ones presented in the endings. One example was the forest castle' s treasure quest. The reply of the NPC after you hand over the forest king's epitaph is so naive and stupid that It reminded me of how many people look at history. Some people think of history as a boring and unimportant event of the past, when in reality, it shows plenty about human nature and about patterns we keep repeating.That's why I don't think backing up your save file before deleting it kills any of the intended meaning. You can relinquish your save file and feel good about yourself because you helped a complete stranger, but if you ignore all the other hints contained within the narrative, then you relinquished everything for a cheap uplifting feeling, which is as reprehensible as keeping your file for bragging rights. Yoko is telling you to read about philosophy, learn about history, learn languages, mind other people's feelings, know yourself, give yourself a chance to learn from others, understand differences, travel, embrace your darkside, accept that life rarely is about easy dichotomies and so on. If you catched all of those ideas, then the save file dilema becomes trivial. If you have a strong moral stance in real life, keeping your save file doesn't make you a dumb monster. It would actually make Pod 042 very pleased because you would merge feelings and reason into one cohesive stance. Besides, the final dilema is a disguised trade off. Would you delete your save file even if you didn't get anything in return?
That’s not true... if you don’t kill him, you just get one of the other finals within this game (mostly a joke). But after killing him, you can go back to the village just to see him selling some parts of the robot children he used to take care of. He’s pascal but not with his previous memory.
The Machine actually there is a secret third option; walking away. This is where lots of the joke ending come from, but doing that on occasion really makes me think.
Since it's almost impossible to beat this ending without connecting online, what would happen 10 years from now if I want to beat this game to get ending E again, as the servers might have been down for years? The concept is nice, but the idea of not being able to beat a single player game because the server is down is scary to me.
if you use chapter select to The End of Yorha (Ending E), the ending C will be played first, then it goes to Ending E afterward. So the true ending is Ending C and then Ending E
My only gripe is with ending D where its physically not possible for A2 to impale 2B at that range, especially not with those super long swords. Notice that 2B is already very close as he has driven his sword hilt onto A2. And looking at the length of the sword to A2's arms... The ending looks neat, but i wish it was done a bit differently; at least not in the current immersion breaking way.

Eliz C She was originally created as a class of android made specifically for killing other androids, like 9S who would eventually find the secret of YoRHa.
Eliz C Yes. 'E' class is 'Executioner' class. Every S class has one because they become 'too good' at scouting and would unravel the secrets of YorHa, humanity, and the machines (even by accident). I got the feeling that wasn't the very first time he was killed off, memory wiped, and brought back to the front lines.
Honestly at 12:38 I started to cry, because that little bit of pod dialog hit me hard in a personal way. A few years ago I attempted (things have been going far better now than I ever thought they could be, glad I'm still here) and this little conversation brought me back to the way I felt when I saw my friends again for the first time after I got back from the hospital (I was in high school at the time). I felt sort of embarrassed to still be around with the hindsight of how silly what I did actually was. That dialog was just very real for me and kinda reassuring in a way. Thanks Yoko Taro, can safely say no game has ever done anything like that to me before.
Whenever I play this part of the game and see 042 and 153, part of me kinda sees a parallel to 2B and 9S. 042's sentimentalism in this segment reminds me a bit of 9S, while 153's logical sense of objectivity and apparent lack of pathos makes me think of 2B (or at least the front that 2B tried to put on in the beginning). Maybe I'm overthinking it, but that's how I felt.
I honestly regret playing Nier Automata. With its brilliant mix of gameplay, challenge, soundtrack, and story it sets such an enormous standard for how games should be made. And now every other game I play can’t live up to what Nier has set.
Up to this day, years after finishing this game, I'm grateful. And I'll always be grateful to all of those wonderful persons who sacrificed everything they accomplished, just so they could help me finish my own story. And... To you, that received my help to do finish your own story, thank you for not giving up.

I don't want more pain for the characters, I'd rather a DLC because this was just absolutely exquisite and masterful. In fact making a sequel is basically developers who are greedy because they know the game would sell because of the previous success.
Badass Toad I mean... CDPR released two DLC packs that not only expanded but ended Geralts story in a conclusive way, regardless of your choice, either you live in Toussaint with Yennefer, or you live there alone, or you live in Kovir with Triss, but yeah... fuck greedy developers, not like some just wanna give us more story, gameplay and a true ending for a dearly beloved character... nope
I love ending E. Never thought a credit roll could be so emotional. The song makes it only better. 僕らは今、無価値でも願う - "In all our vanity, we pray", with "the weight of the world" on our shoulders. In our pursuit for a happy ending, we played as the pod; that very pod who, by the rules of the world of NieR, should never have its own will. In those vessels, we fought the closest thing to "god" in a video game, the developers, to find the happy ending desired by the players. If we have to fight the very developers of the video game to achieve this ending, and only at the help of other players at that, I don't believe ending E to be 'true'. I don't feel that it's meant to be canon. But it's nonetheless beautiful. And equally sad, in the way it shows the futility of all our actions in NieR's broken world.
I just finished, and i feel complete and empty inside. Like my buddy said it was like losing an old friend but to a beautiful end. Use the save data wisely my friends. Thank you Nier, I've changed.

So the canon ending is picking A2. She helped 9S delete the logic virus or whatever was in his head. The one thing I’m still concerned over Ending E is wouldn’t the logic virus still be inside 2B? She was killed but the virus was not deleted right?? So 9S and A2 are virus clean but not 2B right? When they are reconstructed would 2B still be infected? I hope someone can answer this question of mine 😨. This game really had me heartbroken for 9S. I still don’t fully understand why A2 is a rogue android. 2B should’ve been there until the end. The OSTs of this game were heavenly and placed me in the feels as the plot progresses... I need a sequel to this game!
At the end, the machines ended up firing their own ark of memories into space, just like the androids fired the ark of human data to the moon. The layers in this game are insane
I always pick A2, cause while I was contemplating who to pick,it hit me. Yes, the humans are dead, so are the aliens, there's no reason for the androids and machines to continue fighting. We'd all been deceived,our destiny to kill each other for eternity. But there's still a chance to break the cycle of death. Just cause the war was over didn't mean it was the end of everything. It just meant we could now choose our own fate
Okay after watching through every stream of this game Shirrako has played for us before we can use our own money to buy this game (or not) I'll leave a review. The music, gameplay, voice acting, graphics (as in great, the combat system was similar to Bayonetta in a way -unless I'm very wrong- , voice acting isn't unbearable and was pretty excellent and onpoint to 9S's mental breakdown, the graphics were pretty good but it feels like it needs more diversity in a way in terms of what setting this takes place in, music is captivating to the final battle's) were very awesome to take in. Luckily I kept myself under the rock because I don't wanna feel the feeling of 'this is cliche' but the way the story presents itself is very interesting too although the first Nier didn't do that well for me to keep going honestly as 'I had to go through shit all over again' I quote through the same perspective to get all endings (getting everything in the game and whatnot). Overall I can say this is WAY BETTER than the first sequel along with the emotional experience.
Getting different endings isn't very tiring at all. First of all side quests you've already completed are skipped in your playthroughs, and you unlock Chapter Mode later on to go back to specific parts of the game if you want to 100% everything.
Perhaps what is the most powerful subtle detail of this game is the name pod 042. 42, the answer that is given to the question “what is the meaning of life?” In Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
My own comment to the players that try to push through the end credits: "Creators of this game made a fatalistic, sad, depressing and pathologic story. We should evade such feelings and help others fight such moods and feelings.That may also be a reason why we can fight the credits at the end of the game." To "end" the creators of such terrifying story. Don´t get me wrong, NieR Automata is a very special and interesting game. Go, go, go and push through for the E ending. I sacrificed my save game too.
My headcanon: A2, 2B and 9S survived and lived happily after. Maybe they found a way to bring the Machine Village back into life again (let me dream!). Or another headcanon (if you didn't like the 2Bx9S ship): 9S couldn't be repaired, he died. After a long sad time 2B hooked up with A2. (Beautiful romance, haha.)
Used to hate 9S’s combat but then I realized just how OP his weapon throwing ability is. With the spear of usurper and the demon cry bracers with 30 percent crit chance and weapon attack up 8, i was easily breezing through crowds of enemies in seconds without even getting touched.
The beauty of this ending really comes into play if you choose to save others. The Pods talked about the Androids potentially repeating the mistakes of the past, at one point in-game you read about how the machines mimicked humanity, repeating humanity's failures. By choosing to help others you sacrifice your save data. What eventually happens when you start a new game? The Androids make the same mistakes.
This game is just on another level.

Added to the fact that the game starts with a white fade transition, possibly implying that, as you start a new game, they will end up being banished to go back doing this stuff over and over again, truly living up to what 2B said in her foreword right there.
And perhaps, by accepting the fact that they will have grisly fates no matter what-at least for the tone of the narrative of this game and the franchise in general-that by saving them isn't really worth the time, sacrifice, and effort, and that it will only prolong the trio's suffering much further and needlessly delay the inevitable, moments that they will never really savor nor cherish; the only way to end that cycle...
...is to just let go of them and leave them dead by choosing Ending D, etc,. thus putting them to rest once and for all, then ultimately, deleting the save file *manually,* put down the controller, and never play the game ever again.. simple as that.

Even though the pods talked about how they might repeat the same mistakes again I don't see that happening. The bunker is gone and it looks like the machine life forms connected to the network might also just have left with the ark.
On top of that those machine girls in the tower most likely left with the ark too, so no one to hack and infect 9s, 2B and A2. In order for them to repeat the same mistakes the same conditions have to be met and that is impossible.

whats funny is hes relatively new and some of the first major roles he got was he voices mikazuki from iron blooded orphans and mob from mob psycho, both shows where the character DONT emote save for rare moments and even then not that much, then you turn around and see him here and the guy is emoting his ass off throughout all of branch C

This game's story did the opposite of that. It was so depressing and kept breaking you down, only to reach out and pick you up at the end! It was pretty hard to contain my happiness after that.

Yeah, too damn depressing. I love the first playthrough tho. Second was good too, but 3rd playthrough is pure hell. Too difficult, repitive chapters, and lots of bullshit hacking. I fucking hate it. If I had played just the first playthrough, this game would be 10/10. However, the 3rd playthrough was so annoying that it drops points. I still love this game. Especially music.

having Dc Douglas the VA of Legion from the Mass Effect series added a whole nother level of immersion to that unit.
"Personal data deletion request denied." - Pod 042. That was IMO the most badass sentence I've read in the game. By the time the player have seen both ending C and D, anyone who's not a psychopath would cry out "FOR FUCK'S SAKE, CAN'T THESE POOR ANDROIDS CATCH A BREAK?!" or something like that. And then 042 just stated what we, the players, would say in that moment:"FUCK YOUR DELETION REQUEST". And then he would express the thought we have exactly in our heart:"You hoped they would survive as well, didn't you?"
Pod 042, despite being a pod, the most logical, robotic existence in the game, in that instance, became almost the closest resemblance to "human" in this game.
Pod 42 appears to be really bold compare to Pod 153, as expected from a "man"

Well let's be fair. He couldn't survive the battle against A2. In ending C, A2 beats him and hacks into him to remove the virus and in ending D, A2 still beats him but stops because of 2E's flashback and that's why 9S stabbed her.

At the very end, there are 5 doves that fly away, and one dove that stays behind with A2. At the very beginning of the game there are 6 YorHa pilots. Five of them die; one lives.

When I was introduced to A2, it seemed like she was an almost feral killing machine in A and B with seemingly no redeeming qualities. How my opinion changed over time. She gave 2B a merciful, dignified death, preserved 2B's memories, spared 9S multiple times, was honest throughout, and we learn the horrific past she endured shaping who she became. I loved the way my perceptions of 2B and 9S changed over time as well and feel great sympathy for all of them. The three protagonists were fantastic characters.

1) those other 2B were not running to an isolated location to protect comrades from a logic virus (because that only happens once) - A2 can understand and respect that due to her Pearl Harbor descent memories
2) they always attacked her first on orders from the Bunker
3) she didn't have time to...emotionally grow (including from meeting Pascal) - since it's all between 11942-11945 (or around that) - AND this is something everyone in NieR has to do and eventually does. Moving from the one "treasure" each machine has (and androids, especially YoRHa with their machine core black boxes) to the full range of emotions/sentience/understanding. EVERYONE does it:
- 2B from killing 9S on orders (duty) to regret and trying to save him and love
- 9S from not wanting to be alone or curiosity to love (and then other bad things)
-Adam from hate to watching over the sleeping Eve in the Ark databanks
-Plato 1728 from trying his best (wanting to be accepted or useful)...from conformity to his connecting with the doll (or whatever that counts as, friendship + being capable to understand why the other machines reacted the way they did with the doll purge, since they still didn't understand)
-A2 from revenge to seeing the world as beautiful and trying to save someone
-N2 from freedom (of the command from the aliens) to hope and preservation

Im going to assume that if people are watching this, they completely finished the game. I just want to say that they had some serious balls killing off 2B, the main character, halfway through the story. Thats the first time I can ever remember a videogame doing that. I was totally expecting her to come back later on in the story.

There is one game that came out on the PS2 that did that, and it was 10 times more "fuck you" than Automata. I don't want to say the name if you end up playing it. It's part of one of the biggest videogame franchises.

Most of the ending is left open which I kinda appreciate much like nier automata it’s over all theme is finding purpose and a reason to keep going in a hopeless and meaningless world where your whole existence was based on a lie. The fact they only tell that 2B 9S and A2 where given their lives back and nothing else is really nice cause there’s so many things they could do. Would they regroup with what’s left of the resistance fighters and rebuild. Would they just stay with each other and move on. Or do they try and rebuild a new world themselves. It doesn’t matter what does matter as that for the first time in there hundreds or maybe thousands of years of life, it’ll be “their choice” and no one else’s

@@mar.c1 in ending E pod fights the whole pod network and all pods in order to save A2, 2B and 9S. After he beats all pods and network pods start rebuilding androids. In ending D both A2 and 9S die and red girls launch the ark into space.
this doesn't show, but when it asks you "do you still wish for them to survive" anisd choosing yes sets you all the way back down to the credits, where you must fight the them like you were hacking. for me, after fighting and reaching the Square Enix title, I got overpowered by all the projectiles and died...but it gave me a chance again to go on. after about two to three tries, I kept dying from the Square Enix, producer, sound titles etc, then I got a message of inspiration from a player who passed the true credit ending before me, then after dying again, the game itself starts to motivate you to keep going by saying things like "DO YOU THINK GAMES ARE SILLY" "DO YOU THINK THIS IS MEANINGLESS" (something like that). as you keep dying, more messages from past players show up on your screen. I eventually cried as I start reading the words of fellow players and even the game I've now come to love rooting me on to achieve this real ending. NieR is really a one of a kind game, I've never felt true inspiration from a game before.
And at the end it gives you other players "bots" to help you and become a giant megacannon with which you are able to actually beat those last credits, and every time you get hit you see a real username dissapear, which hurts so much knowing you lost a "real" Person there. And it hurts doubly so when at the end you get the choice to save another players life by sacrificing your save data, and my theory is that they mean you offer your "bot" to help someone else go trough that impossible end credit scene as you have been helped and its only one life you are offering.
That whole end credits scene gave me the same kind of happy, motivational, optimistic and yet somewhat mournful feeling as Journey did in the end, yet this game trumped even that in my opinion. A true masterpiece. Too bad the other Yoko Taro games dont have the Platinum games gameplay polish, id really love to play them otherwise. I really really hope this partnership doesnt end here.

It won't surprise me if Yoko Taro was trolling all along and revealed that Ending E was analogous to the false struggle of the YoRHa (respectively fighting for hope and humans), and all his explanations and statements about that ending were all just a ruse.

EL EK Taro himself calls it a happy ending. We don’t see beyond the final concert script (the real one where they wake up) of 2B and 9S, but they reunite and vow the following:
9S: Even if this world is full of curses, even if the world punishes us..
2B: We continue to resist everything within that spiral.
Taro calls Ending E, and officially beyond it, an ending he believed 2B and 9S would have hoped for-and that these characters moved toward that ending themselves. Furthermore, he’s said the ending itself is meant for us to find hope outside the game. Really thoughtful :)

Nice sense of irony, 9S being killed by 2B's sword in the end, even if she wasn't the one wielding it. I really hope this game gets DLC somewhere down the road to continue on with the story of A2, 2B, and 9S after the events of ending E.
I also really want some DLC that continues after ending E, I would love an expansion.
If not DLC at least a novel or something, I've come to love these characters from all I've seen of Nier Automata and I hate cliff hangers, not that this is really a cliff hanger but its a vague but conclusive ending.

I disagree. I think this ending is perfect because we can imagine ourselves how the future will go. Will they repeat the tragedy or will they find a new way, it's best to leave it to interpretation. At least until there's another sequel which won't be for a number of years I'd assume. I'm content with this ending.

I chose ending D over C my first time around. 9S is probably one of my favorite character's in a game and seeing all that pent up emotion and anger almost literally spewing out of him when the fight finishes was hard to watch.
Not a lot of games can do that. This game has everything: music, gameplay, story, characters, comic relief. Nothing feels too "japanese" apart from the grunts and sighs from the characters. Here's hoping yoko taro gives us a nier: gestalt remake.

The ending E is astonishing, one of the most powerful moments I experienced in games ever.
This is absolutely and no doubt one of the very best game experiences I've ever had.
I do hope that when 2B and 9S had their new life, and after all these memories restored, they can live together with each other(I think somehow they love each other). For A2...I don't know what her life will be(but she got great ass, you know).
Afterall, no more Yorha, they are not constraints to wipe out machines anymore. Maybe at least 2B and 9S can start learning human's history and culture, then getting evolved.

nah, If you read the novel that was just recently translated by rekka (check the reddit) you can tell that 9S is well aware of what 2B is. Or at least have a clue of what is going on, and still love her. Remember A2's sentence "but you already know that, dont you ?"

That's reassuring, though I wouldn't be too excited about it lest Yoko cooks up yet another twist where like, what happened in the actual performance was just figments of 2B and 9S's imaginations/memories/dreams being relayed and re-lived by the pods one more time, and the "original" script in some form was the actual ending all along (with 9S waking up AFTER 2B had sputtered out, and eventually killing himself as well).
I wish they animated that scene tho. I'd love to see Adam holding Eve while he sleeps like fuc man

Ray Valentine I don't think Death Stranding will be as good as NieR. If Phantom Pain was any indication, it shows that Kojima is much more interested in high-budget productions with sweeping marketing campaigns and massive open-worlds than actually doing anything substantial with them. I'll always respect him for MGS1-4, but I'm not entirely convinced with Death Stranding after the wasted potential pandemonium of MGSV.
I will still have faith in Kojima, though. He has his own team and everything now, and yes, he's brought us the MGS Series (which has shortcomings on its own) but as a consumer of video games, a gamer, I will always have a personal bias for the wonderful producers who have made my childhood days brighter :)

For the question of whether they'll repeat the same events as before, I think it will be different this time. They have the same physical bodies, the same memories, the same everything, but the circumstances are different. They now know that fighting the war no longer has a purpose. And even if they didn't know because of partially fragmented memories, the Pods can explain it to them. And If they need to find some kind of purpose, eh, 2B's hobby for fishing's a start lol.
I hope that Adam and Eve, Devola and Popola can be happy wherever they've been sent off to. Even if they don't find a particular planet or regain their physical bodies, they'll still be together the whole way in the ark as if they did have bodies, evidenced from Adam holding Eve while he's sleeping.
Something I'm worried about is, if all their memories were restored, do they still have the virus? Their memories were salvaged, so perhaps it might be partial or whole, but does what was salvaged include or exclude the virus?
The virus pretty much had no effect on 9S because it 'surged' when he was dead set on fighting A2 anyway, plus he was 100% in control during their fight. I think with the help of the pods they'll cure him and then 9S will do the same to 2B.

The story is so insane. I feel so pain when realize all endings. They made me cried.

That was one of a handful of lines that really resonated with me. It was the mechanical pods coming to terms with their new found humanness, and for him to admit that in such a logical way was really powerful.
The game talks about "meaning" of things and the "point" of existing multiple times, but I always think meaning is something *YOU* should give it to your action. Some people delete their save because they want to help others, some say its pointless because you get help from dev even nobody delete the save. I delete my 100% save simply because I wanted my wish of them having a better life would be granted. That is my meaning of doing so.
These three being revived is nice and all, but I still feel sad about the two operators... They were both so lovable.

B2 and 9S still alive..
And in the scripts of the "Ending E", we can read this:
"2B woke up after pods repaired her and carries back 9S from ark tower to resistance camp and try to reboot him. She got some help from Jackass and finally managed to do so. 2B alone dig up the collapsed tower ruins to recover 9S's memory fragment. The pod warned her to stop and propose immediate maintenance but she didn't. Admist several system shutdown and bleeding, (although the blood drips through and her sensory motors became numb.) she recoverd the piece, rebooted 9S and brought him back. There also some hidden dialogues that made me cry instant. Gosh she loves 9S a lot, she just never admits it.
At final, it's said that all machines data are gone up with the ark, but the fighting would still continue."

I held it together for this whole game. The mind fucks, the quirks, the insanely melancholy story line.

Taro Yoko did an amazing job at conflicting players with mind ravaging ideas and moral dilemas. The game makes you THINK and I believe that's the real reward of not only ending E, but of the entire game. With that being said, I personally felt more riveted at the ideas presented throughout the game than at the ones presented in the endings. One example was the forest castle' s treasure quest. The reply of the NPC after you hand over the forest king's epitaph is so naive and stupid that It reminded me of how many people look at history. Some people think of history as a boring and unimportant event of the past, when in reality, it shows plenty about human nature and about patterns we keep repeating.That's why I don't think backing up your save file before deleting it kills any of the intended meaning. You can relinquish your save file and feel good about yourself because you helped a complete stranger, but if you ignore all the other hints contained within the narrative, then you relinquished everything for a cheap uplifting feeling, which is as reprehensible as keeping your file for bragging rights. Yoko is telling you to read about philosophy, learn about history, learn languages, mind other people's feelings, know yourself, give yourself a chance to learn from others, understand differences, travel, embrace your darkside, accept that life rarely is about easy dichotomies and so on. If you catched all of those ideas, then the save file dilema becomes trivial. If you have a strong moral stance in real life, keeping your save file doesn't make you a dumb monster. It would actually make Pod 042 very pleased because you would merge feelings and reason into one cohesive stance. Besides, the final dilema is a disguised trade off. Would you delete your save file even if you didn't get anything in return?

That’s not true... if you don’t kill him, you just get one of the other finals within this game (mostly a joke). But after killing him, you can go back to the village just to see him selling some parts of the robot children he used to take care of. He’s pascal but not with his previous memory.
The Machine actually there is a secret third option; walking away. This is where lots of the joke ending come from, but doing that on occasion really makes me think.

Since it's almost impossible to beat this ending without connecting online, what would happen 10 years from now if I want to beat this game to get ending E again, as the servers might have been down for years? The concept is nice, but the idea of not being able to beat a single player game because the server is down is scary to me.

if you use chapter select to The End of Yorha (Ending E), the ending C will be played first, then it goes to Ending E afterward. So the true ending is Ending C and then Ending E
Based on the Ending E epilogue I can only assume that A2 watches over 2B as she tries to wake up 9S, to recreate the cover art on the box.

My only gripe is with ending D where its physically not possible for A2 to impale 2B at that range, especially not with those super long swords. Notice that 2B is already very close as he has driven his sword hilt onto A2. And looking at the length of the sword to A2's arms...
The ending looks neat, but i wish it was done a bit differently; at least not in the current immersion breaking way.

Eliz C Yes. 'E' class is 'Executioner' class. Every S class has one because they become 'too good' at scouting and would unravel the secrets of YorHa, humanity, and the machines (even by accident). I got the feeling that wasn't the very first time he was killed off, memory wiped, and brought back to the front lines.

Honestly at 12:38 I started to cry, because that little bit of pod dialog hit me hard in a personal way. A few years ago I attempted (things have been going far better now than I ever thought they could be, glad I'm still here) and this little conversation brought me back to the way I felt when I saw my friends again for the first time after I got back from the hospital (I was in high school at the time). I felt sort of embarrassed to still be around with the hindsight of how silly what I did actually was. That dialog was just very real for me and kinda reassuring in a way. Thanks Yoko Taro, can safely say no game has ever done anything like that to me before.
Whenever I play this part of the game and see 042 and 153, part of me kinda sees a parallel to 2B and 9S. 042's sentimentalism in this segment reminds me a bit of 9S, while 153's logical sense of objectivity and apparent lack of pathos makes me think of 2B (or at least the front that 2B tried to put on in the beginning).
Maybe I'm overthinking it, but that's how I felt.
I honestly regret playing Nier Automata. With its brilliant mix of gameplay, challenge, soundtrack, and story it sets such an enormous standard for how games should be made. And now every other game I play can’t live up to what Nier has set.
Up to this day, years after finishing this game, I'm grateful. And I'll always be grateful to all of those wonderful persons who sacrificed everything they accomplished, just so they could help me finish my own story. And... To you, that received my help to do finish your own story, thank you for not giving up.

I love ending E. Never thought a credit roll could be so emotional.
The song makes it only better. 僕らは今、無価値でも願う - "In all our vanity, we pray", with "the weight of the world" on our shoulders.
In our pursuit for a happy ending, we played as the pod; that very pod who, by the rules of the world of NieR, should never have its own will. In those vessels, we fought the closest thing to "god" in a video game, the developers, to find the happy ending desired by the players.
If we have to fight the very developers of the video game to achieve this ending, and only at the help of other players at that, I don't believe ending E to be 'true'. I don't feel that it's meant to be canon. But it's nonetheless beautiful. And equally sad, in the way it shows the futility of all our actions in NieR's broken world.
I just finished, and i feel complete and empty inside. Like my buddy said it was like losing an old friend but to a beautiful end. Use the save data wisely my friends. Thank you Nier, I've changed.

So the canon ending is picking A2. She helped 9S delete the logic virus or whatever was in his head. The one thing I’m still concerned over Ending E is wouldn’t the logic virus still be inside 2B? She was killed but the virus was not deleted right?? So 9S and A2 are virus clean but not 2B right? When they are reconstructed would 2B still be infected? I hope someone can answer this question of mine 😨.
This game really had me heartbroken for 9S. I still don’t fully understand why A2 is a rogue android. 2B should’ve been there until the end. The OSTs of this game were heavenly and placed me in the feels as the plot progresses...

Yes, the humans are dead, so are the aliens, there's no reason for the androids and machines to continue fighting.
We'd all been deceived,our destiny to kill each other for eternity.
But there's still a chance to break the cycle of death. Just cause the war was over didn't mean it was the end of everything.
It just meant we could now choose our own fate

Okay after watching through every stream of this game Shirrako has played for us before we can use our own money to buy this game (or not) I'll leave a review.
The music, gameplay, voice acting, graphics (as in great, the combat system was similar to Bayonetta in a way -unless I'm very wrong- , voice acting isn't unbearable and was pretty excellent and onpoint to 9S's mental breakdown, the graphics were pretty good but it feels like it needs more diversity in a way in terms of what setting this takes place in, music is captivating to the final battle's) were very awesome to take in. Luckily I kept myself under the rock because I don't wanna feel the feeling of 'this is cliche' but the way the story presents itself is very interesting too although the first Nier didn't do that well for me to keep going honestly as 'I had to go through shit all over again' I quote through the same perspective to get all endings (getting everything in the game and whatnot). Overall I can say this is WAY BETTER than the first sequel along with the emotional experience.
Getting different endings isn't very tiring at all. First of all side quests you've already completed are skipped in your playthroughs, and you unlock Chapter Mode later on to go back to specific parts of the game if you want to 100% everything.
I knew it's alm's voice actor, he was so damn good in fire emblem! The guy has some serious talent

Perhaps what is the most powerful subtle detail of this game is the name pod 042. 42, the answer that is given to the question “what is the meaning of life?” In Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
My own comment to the players that try to push through the end credits: "Creators of this game made a fatalistic, sad, depressing and pathologic story. We should evade such feelings and help others fight such moods and feelings.That may also be a reason why we can fight the credits at the end of the game." To "end" the creators of such terrifying story. Don´t get me wrong, NieR Automata is a very special and interesting game. Go, go, go and push through for the E ending.

My headcanon: A2, 2B and 9S survived and lived happily after. Maybe they found a way to bring the Machine Village back into life again (let me dream!).
Or another headcanon (if you didn't like the 2Bx9S ship): 9S couldn't be repaired, he died. After a long sad time 2B hooked up with A2. (Beautiful romance, haha.)

LOL the Pods managed to salvage perfectly good clothing for 2B and 9S but still rebuilt A2 to look like a hobo.
Used to hate 9S’s combat but then I realized just how OP his weapon throwing ability is. With the spear of usurper and the demon cry bracers with 30 percent crit chance and weapon attack up 8, i was easily breezing through crowds of enemies in seconds without even getting touched.
