      Did you know asbestos isnt toxic for your stomache. It wont kill you if you eat it. However if you breath it in. Thats a whole other story. The only reason asbestos is dangerous is cause it gets airborn. And you dont want any of that in your lungs.

      I used to work in a factory processing Vermiculite. They used to put artificial lungs on us to test the air for silicate and asbestos. Didn't last long as i started to wonder if the larger amounts of asbestos in the ore would get airborn in the top of the factory where it was not heavily tested. except once a day for 5 minutes to change the direction of the hopper. The fine dust 3 floors up and the heat. Yuck

      @Joshua Joestar fiber glass is pretty much at the end of its development, composites using part glass fiber may be used in the future, but once nanotube technology is working on an industrial scale it will become a thing of the past just like asbestos, and i think in 20 years carbon fiber will be cheap enough that it will replace it, while polystyrene will dominate in insulation, fiber glass has a dim future ahead.

    What is more sad is that it was a double edge sword and actually did save many, many people from burning to death. A lot of people owe their lives to the fact they had asbestos in their homes or the building they were in when a fire happened.

      We can do better, especially as there are significantly safer alternatives for almost all applications. Add to that the costs for abatement, and prohibiting production and use of asbestos is a no-brainer.
      What few people seem to know: drinking water runs through asbestos concrete pipes in many places. The limits are pretty high, and are often exceeded. Ingestion of asbestos fibers is linked to intestinal pre-cancerous lesions and their progression.

      @stephenarling1667 6 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      Carmel Reynen, asbestos manufacturers such as Johns Manville knew about the hazards even in the 1930s. Those were different times. People were rightly more concerned about avoiding starvation during the Great Depression, and making ready to defend Christian civilization from the new barbarians of Europe and Asia. Thousands of WWII shipbuilders used asbestos almost daily, without dust masks or HEPA filtration. Many of them survived to a decent old age.

      Red Pilled Fox some types of plastic, if not all plastic. Research that is currently is in its infancy is exploring the effects of micro plastics (the microscopic fibers that fall off plastic and get in our food and drink, such as in water bottles and those containers used to store sandwiches and the like) on the human body. Because of the process of making plastic and the chemicals involved, I find it unlikely that all types of plastic will be deemed completely harmless, but this research has only been going on for a couple of years since apparently only now have we discovered that microscopic bits of plastic can float around in our bottled drinks and can be found in our food.

    Warren Zevon approves!
    Our MCM, 1974 built house was right on the cusp of "don't use asbestos". No one will clean our air ducts, because they are probably wrapped in asbestos. White powder and fiber does come from the ducts, so we really don't want to break up anything. I wish we had the money to "abate" the stuff while we are getting the roof replaced, but the roof is costing us bucks as it is.

      @Brain_quench 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      get the samples tested.
      1, Some powder from within the ducts
      2, the wrapping around the ducts
      3, the tape between the joints
      be safe!

    Jokes aside. Asbestos is a great technical resource, but with the known dangers. Some old main waterpipes in our public freshwater grid are containing asbestos. I guess the lime in the water seals it of inside so the inside surface.

    I work as a boiler inspector. I used to know guys who worked on boilers and they all said, "Asbestos is great stuff, why I used to mix asbestos powder in a bucket that stuff would be blowing all around and nothing ever happened to me!" And then they would light up a cigarette and cough for ten minutes. Those guys are all gone now. I wonder why?
    It is most dangerous when it is in the form of insulation that is crumbling. "Friable" it's called when it's floating in the air. When it's in the form of paint, linoleum, cement, cinder blocks, shingles, pipes or flat sheets like the 4 x 8 that my father bought to cut and put around our wood stove, it's harmless unless you disturb it. Funny how dad died of cancer.

    How many of those poor lasses paid the price for working on that 'wonderful' material. If you listen carefully to the narration the clue to the tragedy is spoken.......'the silk like fibre.....grew in cracks'.....' Damn, damn, damn what prophetic words and the 'knew' all along as even in the early middle ages its use was causing 'mysterious' deaths. Oh they knew alright, it was just too useful a material to suppress hence all the lawsuits. Those responsible for its continued use long after it was deemed so dangerous aren't the ones who paid the ultimate price.

    It's frustrating that the material causes so much long term damage to humans. Asbestos really is an incredible material. Fires have been an immense issue throughout the centuries and killed many people before modern fire fighting methods existed.
    Think of a time before plastic, before modern metals, before a standardized method of producing items where all things needed to be made by hand. Nearly everything that was made sturdy was made of wood, metal, or both if you could afford it. Although asbestos most certainly killed people over the course of decades, I can guarantee you that it also absolutely saved hundreds of thousands of lives at the time of its use.
    We see it as a stupidly dangerous thing to use now, and yes, it's better not to use when it can be avoided, but even now there are some products that _still_ contain asbestos because it is such an irreplaceable material.

    If only they knew what a ticking time bomb asbestosis would turn out to be. It amazes me that the USA/ Canada have stopped production But Russia had embraced it by even calling the town where it is mined ASBESTOS Town. There is a massive open cast mining operation there, the Russian people who are working with out masks or protective clothing, there are misconceptions that it’s doing no harm and the being treated for something else in a hospital where it was played down.

      +Chris Projahn If a fibre gets into your lungs, even a tiny one that you could barely see, you could well end up with Asbestososis, which will result in death.
      I have it in my head that even just one single fibre will actually cause it, not maybe cause it, but don't want to say guaranteed as i can't be 100% sure without researching.

    • @rv186rs
