    One of the best demos and reviews of a new piece of gear I've ever seen. I'm so glad I took a chance and pre-ordered it, and hope it comes SOON! Great job and thanks for taking the time and effort to show so much and provide such a detailed timeline description.

      Hey Robert, thanks so much for the kind words! The video ended up being quite long (with the live jam) - so I thought it was only fair to allow people to get straight to the section(s) that was most important to them. In the end, I was having so much fun connecting it up to various bits of gear ... I just had to share :)

    Bro I NEVER Comment- I rarely subscribe- let alone watch until the end. Lifetime musician finally seriously pursuing as my career and as a percussionist now focusing on synth and modular I really appreciated the connectivity info bc it’s so relevant to my difficulties at the moment. The jam was inspiring I hope you are fortunate enough to have equally talented artists to work with on fresh ideas . Cheers

    Just gotta say I just bought one of these today (Aug. 2020) and first impression straight out of the box is the build quality. Its solid. Weighs 6 pounds and feels very good. Also I want to say I've seen some reviews regards the USB port being loose/wonky. Not this one. Plugged it in and it is tight and firm. No issues there. Now let's get to work! Great demo ranzee, thanks!

    I kinda like the touch strips, because wheels only allow you to make smooth changes, while the strips allow you to skip as well. That opens up some extra possibilities. However, the mod strip definitely needs lights to indicate its position. One of many reasons why I hope Arturia comes out with a KeyStep Pro...

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey JupiterMenace :) I'm not sure - let me try it out with mine and see what happens. Did you setup the CV in the MIDI Control Center software? - and maybe a silly question - does this happen when you hit the OCT -/+ buttons?

    • @jupitermenace9920
      @jupitermenace9920 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ranzee av Thanks ranzee. I do believe I tried the octave buttons. I'm guessing I'm missing something in the midi control center. I'm hoping to have time to mess with it tonight. Also, I'm using balanced cables. Didn't think that would make a difference, but thought I should mention it.

    Love the video, bro! You convinced me to buy the KeyStep! It's all I can afford after getting a couple of Pocket Operators (KO-33 Sampler, PO-32 Tonic Drum Machine, and the PO-137 Rick and Morty Voice Synthesizer) and then I got a good deal on a Korg SQ-1 Step Sequencer with a MIDI out... I figure I can use that with the KeyStep? I also have an old CTK-411 keyboard which I have circuit bent and added my own jumper cables and pots and toggle switches too! My question is how can I interface all of this together? Would I need an audio interface mixer like a Xenyx USB? My DAW is Ableton Live 10. I would appreciate any help! Thanks!

    Great info, thanks for sharing! And nice little jam at the end! FWIW sure, we can all improve, but you've taken the time to create this and other informative videos, and some of us know just how much time and effort something like this takes. (I just recently posted an ambient jam of my own) I understood when I clicked on the title that this vid was to highlight some uses for the keystep, not showcasing your volca preset making ability, lmao. You'll never please *everyone*, and there will always be troll critics who know everything just bc they watched *heaps of videos* yet are also too scared or lazy to actually learn and practise any of this stuff, much less post their own content. Anyhow, just thought I'd try to encourage you. Keep it up, and thanks for sharing! *subbed*

    Well done presentation, thanks for that. One question though, can you use DIN Midi in parallel to the USB port? For example play a VSTi on channel 1 in your DAW via the USB port and control some other ext gear via the DIN Midi port at the same time (also using channel 1, which would be different from the USB channel 1). I'm coming from a classic MPC right now having 4 dedicated DIN outs (named ports A - D) I can assign each channel to a specific port.

      Use a DIN cable (MIDI OUT Keystep to MIDI IN e2) ... They keystep and the e2 work straight out of the box without any changes required. You can control each part of the e2 using the SHIFT + MIDI channel feature on the keystep.

      Volcas can suffer from ground loop noise - so make sure your power supplies aren't causing this - using batteries are a good way to rule that out. I'm just using the cables that came with the Volcas in the video and also MIDI DIN.

    finally a video that explains actually how to connect gear! I'm lame with midi, but I have a Moog Minitaur, a Make Noise 0 Coast, an Arturia Keystep, and I want to get an Arturia Keylab MKII. Can I get the Keystep to work together with the Keylab? I also want to connect all this up so I can have it all work at once, along with Ableton.

      I don't see why not - you'll need to consider that both the Keylab and the Keystep are controllers and therefore you will need to allocate them to specific MIDI channels.

    Great review. I am pretty new to hardware synth setup (used to spin vinyl on 1200's for years), but can't seem to wrap my head around this stuff. Am not using any type of DAW right now and am trying to just make simple music with what I have at the moment, but still can't seem to make anything happen properly between my keystep, microbrute and behringer neutron. I am lacking a drum machine but that is irrelevant as I know both synths can produce "percussion" if used correctly. I have plenty of cables I think to make something happen but I am at a loss to do so. Any suggestions on sites I can post a pic of my setup to get some feedback into how to actually make some music?

    Hi Ranzee, this is an excellent demo. Thanks very much for doing this. I'm very much new to sequencers etc and have only really used internal sequencers on my two standalone Electribes, so excuse my ignorance. May I ask, how are the Roland and Moog connected? Is that through the Midi box? If I wanted to have my Korg MiniNova controlled by the Keystep through Midi, could Start/stop messages be sent to my Electribes from the same Midi port?

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi themanmaydie! Thanks for the nice comments. The connections with the Roland/Moog are as follows:
      KeyStep MIDI OUT --> (IN) MIDI Solutions Quadra Thru (OUT) --> Moog, Roland JU-06, Roland MX-1, Korg Volca Beats
      I then connected the Strymon BigSky via the MX-1's MIDI OUT.
      The Start/Stop messages are transmitted through cleanly using the Quadra Thru box - so this would work for your MiniNova and Electribes. With the Electribes, you can daisy-chain them via MIDI so you could connect the MiniNova up to one of the Electribes - it should also work. I'm just not sure about the MiniNova's MIDI - as I don't own one.

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sandro, regarding your Boutique chain mode question - if you have multiple boutiques of the same type i.e. 2 x JP-8 (Jupiter boutique) - then yes. Otherwise your K-25M will just send the same MIDI notes to each module depending on their MIDI channel. You will also have to setup MIDI cables OUT --> IN in a chain type setup. This question is really not related to the Arturia Keystep - but happy to provide this basic answer. So would it work to have a m-audio 61-key midi controller plugged into the midi in of the keystep, whose midi out is plugged into midi in of the minilogue? In other words, I could play the minilogue with the m-audio just like normal, but, since the keystep is in between, i could then implement the arpeggiator or sequencer of the keystep whenever I wanted? Thanks in advance :)

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sam Levine :) I haven't tried that. Without testing, I'd assume the sequencer and ARP are launched via local control - i.e. the keystep itself. There's a MIDI thru setting - but I can't see a Local Control setting. In fact, I think I remember reading on the Arturia forum that this was a feature request. I also note there's a firmware update (1.0.1.15) - so I probably better go check it out!

    • @ranzee

      Hi Raven North! The Keystep can only control 1 MIDI channel at a time. If you're using Keyboard Play during a sequencer - you can control another device at the same time (but only a single MIDI channel on the second device). You could look at the BeatStep Pro for the Volca Sample - either that or get the Retrokits cable.

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi crosoft1452, you may want to get yourself a USB 3 HUB to expand your USB ports. Without this you would need to connect the Model D to the Keystep via MIDI DIN - and then pipe your audio into ableton via the mixer (assuming it has an inbuilt audio interface?). Ableton can control the MIDI on the model D via the keystep. IF you had a USB hub - all could be connected separately.

    So, if I can get this straight, I have a circuit, a mininova, and some volcas. With a midi through box can I play with all of them with the keystep ? And it's up to 64 steps per Pattern/memory ?

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Alex. Yep - you could control your Circuit and Mini-Nova via MIDI - and your Volcas via Sync. You may not even need the MIDI thru box - if either the Circuit or MiniNova has the ability to pass MIDI through one of its MIDI out ports. You may even want to use your Circuit as the master clock - and plug this in via MIDI - IN on the Keystep. Don't forget the standard MIDI rules apply - the KeyStep transmits out on one MIDI channel - and it has a feature where you can play "Kbd Play" whilst the sequencer is playing - and you can assign this to another MIDI channel. So effectively it can control two different sets of MIDI outputs.

      Hi Richard, yes you can use it to play sounds chromatically (remembering that the TB-3 is monophonic), and you can also use the inbuilt sequencer and ARP. All you need is a MIDI DIN cable to connect the KeyStep (MIDI OUT) to the TB-3 (MIDI IN). You may also want to sync the clocks - there's a few ways to do this - but since you're already using MIDI perhaps you may want to set your KeyStep as the master.

    I have no hardware synths.. Will all the functions in the keystep, like arp and sequencer, work with my vst plug ins in Ableton, like Massive, Omnisphere etc..? Thanks for any answers..

      Hi Richard, yes, they most certainly will! You can just connect it up via the USB cable and your DAW should have an option for you to add the KeyStep in as a controller.

      Many thanks for the quick reply.. That's good news. Think I'll have a lot of fun with the Keystep..

    Very informative -- thanks! Can you put a separate sequence on the MicroBrute and have the MicroBrute play that sequence in response to the clock only (no note values) from the KeyStep?

      Hi Valdis Krebs, thanks for watching!
      To answer your question: via CV? Yes, definitely! Just use the CV output on the Keystep into the CV input on the Microbrute.
      via MIDI? not unless you have a MIDI Bro/Pal/Gal inbetween the keystep and the microbrute.

      ranzee av What's MIDI Bro/Pal/Gal???

      I did a video on MIDI Bro: th-cam.com/video/1wkBT-nKr2U/w-d-xo.html . You can get it from here: www.audiothingies.com/product/midibro/ - it was originally made by Mutable Instruments as MIDI Pal - but they discontinued making it. MIDI Gal is another make: midisizer.com/midigal/
      Check out the Audiothingies site as there's all the info you need on there. What feature you'd be looking for is the filter - filtering out note data.

      ranzee av Ah, thanks! Most of my current keyboards have the ability to set local/external notes and internal/external clock. I wonder if the Roland Boutique series can distinguish between note and clock data? They have sequencers which have designated notes for each sequence, but would respond to clock to get them in sync with everything else (i.e. clock being sent from Keystep)???

      ranzee av Found it but it is a DIY kit! www.audiothingies.com/product/midibro/
      Too bad, something like this would be a good piece of kit already assembled with a nice SW UI for PCs/Tablets... or even better... built into a Keystep "PRO"!!!

    Hi, I see that when you start a sequence on the keystep it starts the sequencer on the Volca. Any way of stopping this as I have the same problem using my Volca Keys with my Beatstep Pro. Nice demo cheers.

      I'm not sure how to turn that off - However, you can use the Sync cables - and I noticed that they wont trigger the sequencer to start.
      I hope someone who's smart and knowledgeable will chime in here and help us with the answer :)

      You can just clear the sequencer of the volcas for the active pattern, so there's no internal sequence to trigger when pressing play on the keystep. Bit late but yeah..
