    Best tutorial ive seen on this great little Arturia keystep. Forget about fancy intros, loud techno Music, blinking intros and all that noise, FINALLY an adult explaining how Keystep works. thank alot to the person making this video its a great job you did with this tutorial and ill hope there will be more from grown up adults who can do the same without all this nonsense noise i wrote about before :) im a subscriber now and will link this...great job.

      Thank you Tom! It´s more than nice to read your words! And thank you for subscribing. May I ask you for a favour? I´m trying to change my serious hobby of making tutorial videos like this one (and doing sound design etc.) into a business to have more time for those "sound activities" (I spent most of my time teaching languages, maths, physics and philosophy, instead of doing soundworks). I´d be happy, if you took part in the survey I´ve set up here: forms.gle/7f8hEBJj176Fg1St6 . I´ve set up this survey to learn more about the people, who are watching my videos, so that I can improve my website, and aim my future activities better at the nreal needs of my watchers. Enjoy your day! Rolf

    Best tutorial I’ve found yet! I bought the Keystep 37 as a total beginner and was looking for over a week for a tutorial for beginners, as I couldn’t understand the original handbook (which somehow is not for beginners it seems like). Thank you so much! I finally punched in my first sequence!! 😎❤️

    I rarely comment on youtube videos but I just wanted to say thank you, your clear instructions have taken me from being frustrated to a point where i can just enjoy being creative with my volca and keystep and your relaxed attitude and good humour made the video a pleasure to watch, much appreciated!

      Thank you for commenting! It´s really motivating for me to hear/read, that my work is helpful somehow. And as you say you rarely comment, your words are even more precious. There´s someting, that I do rarely, and that´s asking for a favour here. But today I do ask: I´d really appreciate, if you could find the time to take part in my survey at forms.gle/7f8hEBJj176Fg1St6 . It helps me producing the right tutorials in the best serving way. But anyway: Enjoy your day! Rolf from www.rofilm-media.net

    Really useful! Thank you for the time put into the explanation.
    The intention is always good, but some other tutorials out there just go through it as if everything is obvious..

      I had the same problem! Most tutorials seem to be for seasoned professionals, merely explaining some of the specifics of the KeyStep, but assuming that the viewer has already plenty of experience with other devices and programming music in general. So glad I found this tutorial!

    Dankeschön Rolf! I purchased a Keystep to get started with midi sequencing with a looper pedal that I have and ended up packing it back to return to the store as I could control only one volca at a time. After seeing your video I realized that I was using the transpose mode all the time so I’m motivated to give it another go!!! Great job, keep doing these videos. Hopefully you can do a nice one about the Keystep Pro for when I decide to upgrade? haha I’m sure it will help a lot of people! Cheers

    Maybe I'm miss understanding legato/tied & rest notes, but is it possible to say for example;
    Record a 1/4 note sequence with two 1/8 notes at the end of the phrase?
    or say an 1/8 note sequence with four 1/16 notes for the last two 1/8 notes?
    Basically to change time division's mid sequence?

    You sound like a cross between Werner Herzog & Giorgo Moroder.
    While such a grotesque picture might instill a general sense of dread in the hearts of many, the banality of putting 4 on the floor is ultimately inevitable.

    • @rofilmmedia2
      @rofilmmedia2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, first I´d like to thank you for commenting. If you´ve already got a keyboard controller, then the Beatstep pro should surely be the better decision. It´s a bit more expensive though. If you want to stay in the price segment of the Keystep, then you may consider the Korg SQ-1. I don´t know the beatstep pro in detail (I´ve only watched some youtube demos), but it seems to me, that the beatstep pro is a bit more functional than the SQ-1. If I should have to decide between the beatstep pro and the SQ-1, then the question of ratcheting would make the point. Enjoy your day! Rolf

    I would love to learn what the differences are (only looking at the sequencers in these 3 products) if there are any. since nobody put out a nice comparison video so far, I will have to find tthis out by watching all videos about all three models. that'll take some time! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Great video. For the first time I understand how to use the rest/tie and some other features I could not find anywhere else.
    I have just one question: I use Volca FM (ch. 3) and Volca Keys (ch. 1). I do Shift - Oct+ and would like to leave Volca Keys playing the sequence while soloing on Volca FM (what you mentioned as a possibility). However, no matter what I do, it is always the channel I select after Kbd Play that will play both, the sequence and solo. I tried to figure out the settings in MIDI Control center and in spite of my efforts, nothing changes. What do you recommend?
    Thanks.

    • @rofilmmedia1
      @rofilmmedia1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Miki.the.Great! I´m afraid you cannot achieve what you want that way. The problem is, that a sequence, which is being played by the Keystep must be sent out via the CV out jack, if you want to play the keyboard live using another MIDI channel. As the Korg Volcas don´t have a CV in jack they depent on the conventional MIDI jacks/cables. Therefore: they always will play along with the MIDI channel you´ve adjusted last. To let the sequence and your live playing getting played by different devices, you need to use both, the MIDI out jack for your live playing to device 1 and the CV out jack for the sequence going to device 2. I´m going to talk about problems and set-ups like that in Modular City, which is going to be opened in April: th-cam.com/video/EHOPosGnfDo/w-d-xo.html

      @rofilmmedia1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Pablo. I´m glas you found my video useful. Your question: you need 3.5 mm jacks. The Sync jacks must be stereo (TRS), if you want to transmit Clock pulses as well as Start/Stop signals. If you want only to transfer clock pulses, you can use mono (TS) jacks. All other jacks (Pitch, Gate, Mod) are mono (TS) jacks anyway. By the way: have you had heard of Modular City? If not and you are a bit interested in modular synthesis etc., you should invest 15 minutes and watch the following: th-cam.com/video/MmNqERfI4qM/w-d-xo.html

      Thank you for commenting. Concerning the Electribe, well, I don´t know this machine. But all websites say it has MIDI (the adapter being part of the deal). So you just use the MIDI input jack of the electribe, I can imagine. If you want to connect the Keystep with two MIDI sources, you´ll have to use a MIDI splitter, I think. You´ll get them on the Internet for something between 40-50 dollars (1 in and 4 or 5 outs). Enjoy your day! Rolf

      Hello Popart 2015. You´re right. It would lead to a kind of legato, but a quite "unmusical" kind, because even when you play legato - for excample on a real piano - you hear one note end and there isn´t that blurring between two consecutive notes, that whould occur with gate = 100%.

    • @rofilmmedia2

      Hi David. Thank you for asking! Every sequence is automatically stored in the one of Keystep´s 8 sequencer registers, which you´d chosen when you programmed the sequence. There is no way of saving more than 8 sequences directly in Keystep. But you can - of course - transfer any programmed sequence to your computer. Enjoy your day! Rolf

    • @rofilmmedia1
      @rofilmmedia1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello theo rex! The Keystep isn´t a sound module - of course it isnt, it´s mainly a sequencer. In the video I connected the Keystep to a Korg Volca FM (via MIDI cable), which produced the sounds. The whole setup was quite simply: Keystep to Volca FM (MIDI) and Volca F M´s audio out into a Zoom H5 recorder (in multimode), which recorded also my voice. Concerning your second question: I think yes, the Keystep is best value for money in its range. I hope the video showed, what kind of sequencer the Keystep is and how it works. There maybe one alternative, which is the Korg SQ-1. The SQ-1 is more liíke a "conventional" sequencer, it is about 25 dollars cheaper and cannot (except for the sequencer functionality) serve as a MIDI controller (there are no keys). I´ll produce a video about the SQ-1 in 2019 (but it will last a bit, as I´m frantically working on "Modular City"). Enjoy your day! Rolf from rofilm-media.net

      Sharkwhisperer I was having the same problem, you have to change the transport settings in midi control center. In my case the record button was sending a signal to eg sustain so I had to change stop, rec and play cc values. You can look for the midi implementation chart for the volca keys and make sure that the values for start cc, stop cc, and rec cc are not set to the volca control channels. Hope this helps....
