Unfortunately we haven't been able to record a CD in years. It is a very expensive process... which is one reason why we've been putting up the videos of our live performances.
Sousa explained to the press that the three themes of the final trio were meant to typify the three sections of the United States. The broad melody, or main theme, represents the North. The South is represented by the famous piccolo obbligato, and the West by the bold countermelody of the trombones.
Wonderful. I lived in Ohio all my life, exception of a stent in the army from 1997 to 2003. I never knew about this. Worst of all I'm from Dayton. Well I guess the grunt is showing again. lol. Thanks you all for your service.
Sousa NEVER played it this fast! Even in a concert setting. Years ago I met a guy who played in Sousa's band. He was 81 at the time. He said about every band plays it too fast.
It was a celebration of life and the human spirit. This brighter TEMPO was meant to inspire and enrich all Americans, with a grandiose slight ritardando for the last 32 bars!
Aside from the Piccolo players standing for the solo is there any acoustic pro or con to where the piccolo players are set in the orchestra? I notice most concerts especially military bands have the piccolo players up front for the piccolo solo....Great video and keep up the good work!!
Good topic/question. Other than custom borrowed from the orchestral world, where the violins generally being softer and carrying the melody most of the time, also coupled with the fact that they are more capable of intricate playing than the brasses. In the concert band, the role of the violins is played by the flutes and clarinets which have the same pros/cons. While a piccolo would have no problem cutting through an ensemble, and technically could be placed at the back, a piccolo is usually a doubler chair with flute, so it would be very strange to send a flautist to the back row.
Thanks, your the experts. That’s why I went into aviation instead of music. Off topic....you want to see a awesome military band....TH-cam US Navy Band “Frosty the Snowman”......what a clip......especially the drummer at “stop”. .....Sorry, that might be somewhat biased but oh well.... Steve Cannon USN 1988-1992!
It would be funny if after the intro to the song, the conductor just had them play a note for four beats and end it. Turn to the audience, expect applause, get nothing ,and ask, "Was that too fast? Alright fine, we'll play it at MACH 2. You should be able to hear it at that speed." And then proceed to play it at this speed.
This very march is written by John Philip Sousa who was a marine himself! The tempo is also way after than it should be. The tempo should be at 120. Excellent playing but I prefer the marines. Oorah
One, the song is awesome! Two, the Trombones are playing too loud, but at least the people now know why they stand up. Three, the song is WAAAAAYY too fast. But otherwise, it was awesome.
It's standard tempo at points, it stays roughly around 120bpm (But yes it does get faster than it should but not a whole bunch) which is how it's supposed to be played in a concert setting. Since they aren't marching I'd say it's a perfectly acceptable speed, albeit if the band can handle it.
I think I know what happened. The conductor starts out at a good tempo. The audience starts clapping and they get faster. This probably threw off the band. In a later view of him, the conductor seems to be struggling to get back to his tempo. That happens sometimes.
Wow. This is fast compared to most other performances I've heard (which probably play it too fast anyways) at least until after the solo. Also, two piccollos? Isn't that really risky as far as being in tune is concered? I remember my high school music teacher joking "If there are two piccollos, shoot one." Still, an enjoyable performance.
USMarine Band Is Waaaay Better!!! This March Was Written By John Phillip Sousa A Marine!!! Although This Air Force Band Did Well The Tempo Was Way Too Fast.... Just My Opinion From A Marine!!! Semper Fi!!!
I'm not particularly a fan of the Stars and Stripes Forever being played at this tempo, as I feel it loses much of its majestic march feel if played too quickly. I do, however, offer high praise to the piccolo players who could play the solo that fast
I don’t believe it is appropriate for an officer in the armed forces to call upon a deity in public. After all, I said in 1754: “When a religion is good, I conceive it will support itself; and when it does not support itself, and God does not care to support it, so that its professors are obliged to call for the help of the civil power, 'tis a sign, I apprehend, of its being a bad one."
+Alexander Schneider Siemssen Up tempo for sure. But that is something the director is allowed to establish. I personally prefer it slower, but this is acceptable----and GOOD. In the sections where the piccolos are supposed to be heard they are. A failing in many renditions.
Far too fast for my taste, and I missed the piccolo parts not played while the soloists approached the front and returned to their seats. The attention to the trombone's counterpoint was nice, but it overpowered the melody. This is NOT my favourite.
For God Sakes...Spend a little money and get those piccolo players some good piccolos to play on.... They are too good of players to be playing on crap instruments..
What? Those are $4000 professional grenadilla ebony wooden concert piccolos. The Grenadilla wood piccolo with solid silver keys is a tribute to the legendary piccolo maker Roy Seaman. Handcrafted to produce the warm, rich sound that blends so beautifully with other acoustic instruments, this instrument has long been recognized for its outstanding craftsmanship and performance. The Roy Seaman Signature Piccolo comes with a deluxe case and cleaning rod. features: Grenadilla wood head and body. Solid silver keys Split E Conical bore Beryllium copper springs Includes: deluxe case, cleaning rod.
The tempo is as fast as the USAF flights around the globe. Also very peppy to give that zest! --More--

Oh wow, that is so interesting! So much symbolism!
I love this song. Played it myself. God Bless America
Awesome job! Especially the piccolos (the best instrument in the concert band). : )
i love this spectacular song, salute from Valencia, Spain
From the home state of Wright Patterson, I love it! (Rob, Ohio, 11-08-19)
Spitze! die beiden Mädchen mit den Piccolos. So schön und klar habe ich dies noch nie gehört. Einfach das Beste!
BEAUTIFUL JOB, WHOLE FAMILY HAS BEEN AIR FORCE...born and raised AF...my baby cousin is in the Navy now...BUT SUPPORT ALL OUR MILITARY!
This is one of the best renditions I have heard. It was fast, but the conductor pulled it off. Good job.
EXCELLENT....absolutely perfect...
Magnificent ! Go Air Force ! My late dad trained scores of USAF pilots in T-28s and T-37s in the 50s. FIne people.
Always brought a chill to me during drill or parade!
Well there's always three in every crowd. Well done USAF. Yes my branch in service.
Outstanding playing ladies and gents. Particular kudos to the piccolo players! Never has that solo sounded so flawless as this. What a great band :-)
My dad was a member of the USAF BAND 1959 to 1970 in Japan and Massachusetts and he played the flute /piccolo!!!
懐かしいです 上山中のブラスバンド部の演奏思い出しました。ありがとうございます
it's a show business interpretation :) of course it's fast and full of clapping! sousa would not mind.

Que bella interpretación de las barras y las estrellas ,por la banda de la fuerza aeréa más poderosa del mundo. Se siente la alegria en el corazón.
Enjoying them, Thanks for living in the 21st century. High Quality recordings would be appreciated as well.
Outstanding!! A little fast for my taste. I am a former member of the Band of Flight, '84-'92
GOD BLESS all our troops , but born and raised a AF baby, so my heart belongs to them , but cherish all branches
I love the slowdown at the end. :D That just gives more pizzazz to this patriotic piece. :D

Actually not standard, sorry, above standard. But not -waay- faster.
is that a F22 at 2:08?
If you listen to Sousa's recording of this song from the 1930s, the tempo is a really faster. Therefore, tempo = not rushed but slowed down

The conductor getting the audience to clap was irritating. But this was cool to hear the march being played really fast.
why so fast?
bravo
Piccolos bowed brass stood - did it right.
and your point (besides the top of your head) is?
As an Atheist I see absolutely nothing wrong with it. Served 20 years along side Christians and I do not begrudge them their religion.
isn't it too fast?

The US Army Band did it with 5 piccollos.
your high school music teacher was an idiot
Risky but they nailed it - showing how good they are
much too fast, how to march on this music?

A Eck
It's a show version and not for marching. ...
Sousaphone's are for marching band. This is a Symphonic Wind Ensemble that uses Tubas

No such thing as too fast, this is a USAF band, we're reaching F-15 speeds boi.
Marines always think they're superior.
why are the ladies wearin' such long skirt s
They're wearing long skirts because this is their official concert dress uniform.
ziemlich schnell mal was anderes

US Army field band is superior!
TOO FAST....
Souza said you had to be able to march to this, not run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mama San A half step march would suit this tempo, you'd be surprised at how simple it is to march to this actually. Lol
The conductor getting the audience to clap was irritating. But this was cool to hear the march being played really fast.
