    My final year in my biochem degree.. Best advice i can give is MEMORIZE ALL THE STRUCTURES AND PATHWAYS IN THE BEGINNING.

      Amen! Same applies for Biomed :D There's tons of overlap with Biochem/Biotech. Classes like Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Protein Chemistry, Genetic Engineering... Can't write down a full Krebs cycle myself anymore, but then again, haven't come across situations were I needed to. Perhaps the essence is more to remember how different macromolecules enter in different cycles, and how much ATP is generated. Ow, and then there's signal transduction pathways also, haha. Damn you, JAK/STAT :D

    I recently discovered this video while researching university topics to look into, I came across Biochemistry, and really wanted a rundown on what it was all about and this really helps a lot 😎
    I am 25 years old, from America who's never been to a college or uni, but despite an interest in Biochem, I've been studying languages, and linguistics on my own for the last 5 years, but career wise, I have been looking into something that is challenging and involved in the sciences to help the general public.
    Lastly, this video was very informative and I appreciate your enthusiasm, thank you from the US 🙌🏻

    This was so so helpful, I haven't seen any videos about biochemistry until this one! Im currently thinking of applying for either biochemistry and genetics or just a straight biochemistry. Like you, i really enjoy studying biology at the smallest/deepest level but also find genetics really interesting. Do you think there was enough genetics as part of your degree for someone who is really interested or do you think a biochemistry and genetics degree would be better?

    • @NooStenningVideos
      @NooStenningVideos  6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      +Rosie Harrison I hadn't either so I'm glad it was helpful! We had a genetics module and then elements of genetics throughout, then next year you can pick optional modules entered around genetics so there definitely is enough! Honestly I would pick the uni you want to go to because for instance they only do straight biochem here and you're cutting yourself off from some great unis by specialising early! I don't know how it is in Foreign Schools, but labs in the United states schools (at least from my observation) get progressively more awesome, assuming u love science stuffs xD. For example, my microbiology lab is all about culturing microbes understanding tests that can be done with them, and assists in understanding the lecture. The same goes for any chemistry class above gen chems... I heavily disliked the general chemistry labs, but so far the organic chemistry lab is quite interesting

I'm in to the molecular and cellular side and organic chemistry but I'm not interested in the labs part (similar to what you were saying). I studied biochemistry at Cardiff University (BSc 1987; PhD 1991). My bachelor's degree involved equal proportions of biochemistry, chemistry and microbiology in year one, half-and-half biochemistry and chemistry in year two, and biochemistry only (with an elective) in year three. In my experience, the days (other than Wednesday afternoons) were filled with lectures, tutorials and labs., with evenings reviewing the day's lecture notes and completing assignments. My advice would be to make thorough notes, memorize the metabolic pathways (and understand what they mean) and work consistently. Don't rely on 'cramming' and you should be fine!

If something piques your interest, I suggest you take a class or two to explore it. The further along you go into biochemistry, the tighter your schedule becomes and you’ll get less opportunity to switch over to something you might like more. I didn't do much research in the field itself but after we did some random formulas in class i cried. It was so confusing and I didn't quite understand it tbh... I was wondering if the field itself is mostly based on confusing formulas and less hands on work like looking at a organism and specimens through a microscope. Hello there ! Its my last year in high school this year, and im really interested in everything related to biology, biochemistry, etc. But the only issue i have is that i don’t know what jobs these kind of degrees can help me get in the future. I’d reaally appreciate your help, thank you.

      +Naïma Soussi hey, I think I answered a super similar question on this video already but in case I'm getting mixed up, basically biochem is very broad so anything from drug research-conservation, lots of medical related careers and general research into plants and the body! I'm sure the internet is more helpful than me x
