    Going to be fun to watch even if they are still a bottom 5 team.

    As a longtime Sharks fan and former season ticket holder this is great news to me and the organization as a whole. It reminds me a lot of the late 90's when the Sharks had numerous great draft picks who would go on to anchor there success from that 2000 miracle upset of the President Trophy winning Blues to that great 04 Western Conference Finals against Calgary and beyond. Players like Marleau, Scott Hannah, Marco Sturm, Brad Stuart and Evgeny Nabokov set the foundation for the teams future success and I get the same feelings with all these young draft picks. With the signing of Celebrini now I am more likely to put some money down and take my family to a Sharks game just like my parents did during the Cow Palace days. Lets go Sharks!!!!!

    Dude you think with Smith and Celebrini will push us to 30 wins this year?

    • @progshark
      @progshark 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Probably not. They are not a team, but they will be pillars to build one around.

    • @sharkhaos_probably
      @sharkhaos_probably 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think 25-30 wins is a good estimate for this team. It's clearly better than last year, but not even close to a playoff team.

    • @metsunie
      @metsunie 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I think we're between 25 and 30 bracket of wins (or 60-65 points) which would have been bottom 3 this draft, or bottom 4 the year we got Smith

    The only thing I’m worried about is his size/weight right now, he was getting pushed off the puck pretty easily at Dev camp
    Time to bulk up this summer!!

    Based on his comments since the draft, and this past week at the Development Camp, not surprising, but definitely great news and glad it happened sooner than later! Plus, and let’s not forget Smith, Eklund and other prospects, along with certain core current players, a much needed new head coach, the future is improving. And of course, there will be challenging times ahead, but now there does indeed appear to better times ahead. Go Sharks!

    Professor, The sharks are 10 mill over the min cap now meaning had they never did those bad Toffoli and Wennberg contracts they would only be 1 mill under it and could have easily done a cap dump trade to cover it. Most bad teams that pay out big contracts when they already bad it just ends up hurting the teams.
    Tons of Hawks fans defend the bad contracts they just gave out saying they want to give Bedard more help but that does not matter when the team is still bad. I am not a pessimistic person it is just what Buff, Det and the Sens do has constantly failed compared to keeping the rebuild / tank going.
    I get GMs have a boss and some might even be told win or I am looking to fire you but it does not change my point that trying to win too soon can really hurt.

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you may be underestimating the value surrounding your young talent with good players will do for their development. Considering Celebrini and Smith are the absolute most important pieces for the Sharks going into next season, I’d much rather they play with Toffoli and Wennberg than Carpenter and Kunin.
      I also think you may be overestimating how much of an effect these moves will have on the Sharks in the standings next year. Many people are still predicting the Sharks to be the last place team, and even optimists don’t really see them outside the bottom 5 or so. The Sharks improving by 10 points last year as an example still sees them finish 31st in the league.

      @@professorhockey I think you are overestimating the value surrounding your young talent with good players when a team is already terrible.
      Most top 10 picks never win a cup with the team who drafts them or ever. Most bad teams GMs with a top 10 pick refuse to trade down too no matter how good the best offer is. If the Hawks never win with Bedard it will be a massive blunder they passed on that unless they trade him later and that pushes them over the top.
      Not trading down with a 1st round pick is the opposite of rebuilding. It is a reloading / trying to win now move.
      You do not need to look at the sharks but the other teams who have already gone down this path. Buff did not miss when they drafted Jack Eichel. Some Buff fans even blamed him personally to why they never made the playoffs. Buff gave out many bad contracts to HELP and it did not.
      I agree the rest of the team being good will only help a young players development but if the rest of the team is not good enough those young players mean a lot less. The sharks can lose with anyone.
      Buff, Ott, and Det constantly try to do what you are saying and fail at it. It gets to the point that even their own draft picks that are actually good you got to pay them and the team still does not win and those new contracts make it harder to win.

    Hey Professor,
    I have some news of my own to break here: I have also signed my ELC...with myself. Expectations are particularly low for me but, the situation is precedented so who knows? hahaha This is definitely great news and sort of as you indicated ends the speculation that most figured Maclin would sign and turn pro.
    I did some digging and for comparison Patrick Marleau his rookie season (different era. Marleau broke in during the height of the "clutch and grab/obstruction era where scoring was down a lot by virtue of the defensive style featured in the NHL then) played in 74 games for 32 pts as second over all pick. Joe Thornton played in 55 games for 7 pts as the first over all pick. Owen Nolan played 55 games for 13 pts as the first over all pick. This last player I think is more like Celebrini with his two way game and high level of skill. Joe Sakic played 70 games for 62 pts as the 15th over all pick all of those players came into the league in that clutch and grab era. Pretty telling how great Sakic was as a player that he could do so well as a rookie only playing in 70 games and still putting up over 60 pts! How many GM's are kicking themselves to this day that they passed on Sakic?
    I am very much looking forward to seeing how well Macklin and Will Smith do this year and I hope nothing major happens to them as they launch their NHL careers. We have had so many great young players get hurt early in their careers from Marco Sturm, Milan Michalek, and Thomas Hertl to name a few. Thanks for this great news Professor. Cheers!

    Capfriendly says he signed a contract of 3 years worth 13.5 million but his cap hit will only be 975 thousand. I dont understand rookie contracts to much. Can anyone explain that?

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Entry level contracts (this year) can only be a maximum of 975k. However, teams can attach performance bonuses to a contract that can amount to an extra 3.5 million dollars (again, this year). If he hits, let’s say, every single target, that 3.5 million will count against the cap this year.
      As an example, Bedard signed a similar max elc last year and he hit each bonus I believe. So he got paid out the full contract of ~4.5
