About 7 years ago, my best friend and I played through Ocarina of Time, Majoras Mask, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess over the span of about 2 weeks. We were just in the zone, passing the controller back and forth and helping each other solve the puzzles. It's one of those times in my life I will always look back on and cherish.

31 now, a father, husband, 3 pets, house, job, TH-cam channel, exercise, juggling extended family etc.
I just had this night. Nay, this weekend. Wife took my son to her friends so he can hangout with some kids his age, and I stayed home with my fresh new copy of Kingdom Hearts 3. I had a 3 hour nap after work, and I stayed up until 630am playing the crap out of that game. A game I've waited for, for 13 years. I did what you did. Got some food, and zoned into nothing else but the game.
Got up, ate the old food, and dove back in. After 25 hours, the game was beat. It was euphoric. I haven't done that since I was a bachelor in college. It felt AMAZING. I shed some tears at the end both for the game itself and for the experience I just had. This video resonated with me big time, and I'm so happy you had this night for yourself. Sometimes we just need it. Love this video, and this channel, and it inspires me to work harder on my own. Thank you for sharing this experience with us, we can truly see your passion and it's enlightening in this day and age.

Johnny, I’m a bit late on finding and watching this video (even though I’ve been a fan since 10+ years ago), but I just had to comment. This episode is definitely in my top 3 favorite of yours. NOONE can convey as much passion for gaming as you. What you said about “truly great video gaming memories cannot be forced, and just happen unexpectedly” is so true, and I’ve experienced that so many times. Everything just lines up. Your mental state. The weather outside. The time of day. This happened with me on Shenmue. I stayed home sick from school (legit fever), and it was raining outside. Even though I felt bad, I was happy I didn’t have to be at school, and I just had happened to have picked up Shenmue. That morning, after everyone had left for school and work, and I was alone under a blanket, listening to the rain hit the window behind me, I turned on the Dreamcast, and the start up screen lit up the dark cold room. Then came the Shenmue starting screen music. Oh what a day. Everything lined up perfectly. It enabled me to LIVE in that world. I was in Japan. I was Ryo. It became my favorite game of all time. And it is a big influence on why I currently now live in Japan. I hope I can have another video gaming memory like that soon… The most recent one in memory would have to be Subnautica. Playing that with my wife each night after work. Both of us scared out of our minds. Her organizing my inventory, but passing me the controller whenever she dove beyond 300m and got scared. It’s a wonderful game. Please do try it if you haven’t. Anyways, thank you for the video and memories.

Period with 11 goals each. went into the first overtime, 13 each. 2nd overtime, no goals and in sudden death i beat him 14 to 13. we were sweating from the intensity and the drama and we shook hands and thanked us for the awesome game. we never played NHL against each other again but we talked about this match for years to come

Johnny- you’re review is touching. I swear you and I had the same video game childhoods. Phantasy Star changed my life as a 12 year old. Me and a friend played this game for weeks back in 1988- it is, without a doubt, the greatest game in history. Now, over 30 years later, me and my 10 year old daughter, played through “Ages” together this week. I was able to share an important part of my childhood with her- and the best part is she is in love with the game too. She’s working through it again, now. Next- Ys Ages? Miracle Warrior Ages? Golvellius Ages? I’m sure you’re with me on those, Johnny. Your channel’s a blessing for an old Sega guy like me. Keep it up.

I had a night a couple years ago where my wife actually got sick (long before Covid) and she wound up going to bed early. It left me with nothing to do, but I actually had just started playing The Messenger. I didn’t want to wake her, so I had my headphones on, with the bass jacked up, the lights dim, on our newer big screen TV. We’d lean near the window at night as we passed streetlights, because there weren’t backlights then. Freaking out as we found one of the legendary dogs roaming near Goldenrod. Then our power light would get dimmer and the AA batteries we stole from the TV remote would fail us, and we hadn’t saved in two hours of driving.

Hey Johnny. I’m a 47 y/o gamer. I’ve loved video games since the beginning. I had an Atari 2600, an Intellivision, Colecovision, Sega Master system, Genesis, Super Nintendo, every PlayStation and Xbox console. I discovered the electric playground in 2002 when I was 31. I had never seen a show about video games and I loved it. I really liked Victor and Tommy. This past year I discovered your Happy Console Gamer blog because of your sometimes appearances with Buc on EP. The reason I am boring you to tears with my life story is because I think your show is excellent. It’s authentic in its honesty and raw passion that you convey to the viewers. When I watch your show I can feel your passion for this great hobby. It makes me feel like I’m not alone in feeling the way I do about games, and how they can create such great memories, and experiences sometimes. And even when you do get to sit down and enjoy a game, there's always something that's in the back of your mind saying "Oh, you shouldn't be playing this, you need to be doing x y or z." My wife and kids went out of state to visit her side of the family, but I had to stay behind because I couldn't get time off of work. The first night they were away, it was weird being in a silent, empty house overnight. So just like you, I ordered a pizza, haha... and then I perused through my video game collection for a game that I hadn't really played yet and wound up with Eternal Darkness for the Gamecube. I kid you not, shortly after the pizza arrived the worst summer thunderstorm of the year started crashing down. So with the lights off, alone, with a thunderstorm raging, I played through most of the mindfuck that is Eternal Darkness for the first time. What an experience that was.

I was so excited because this game meant so much to me and I had been dying to get my best friend to try it for years, and then when the remake came out and I told him there was co-op, he shrugged and went "Yeah, sure, I'll play with you." By the time it was 1 in the morning, he turned to me and said "we're beating this tonight." Having a friend to play with can make any game an amazing new experience.

Unfortunately I never had friends who enjoyed the same games or shares a similar passion for video games. Of course everyone liked playing games as a kid, but I was totally into them and still am in my 30's. Finland is a small place. Thanks for being my virtual friend!

I tried to do a video game night with my nephew and cousin last year. I tried to first find a few games on Steam that had cross-platform support so my cousin who was on a Mac could play with me and my nephew on the PC.
I had them download the games ahead of time so we can play when we had the free time to get together online. In the end it didn't work out all the time do to the fact that we would be busy with our lives and responsibilities, my cousin is mainly a console gamer so he had a hard time adjusting to gaming on Steam/Mac.
I can say at least I had a little fun playing with them when I did, but sadly we didn't get far in the games we played together.

That sounds like an awesome evening! I remember a few years ago I went back and played Skyrim and I played non-stop for 12 hours because of how addicted and immersed I was! Best gaming day ever!

    Wow, that brought me back.
My best gaming night was my first LAN in the 90s in a garage of a friend. We were 10 or 12 gamer buddies and we played Half-Life 1, DukeNukem3D and Quake all night. I remember closing my eyes to preserve it and can always recall this very moment, since then.

“When it happens naturally, it can be magical!” HCG 2019
Haha. I’ve had a few such special nights. One with a housemate in Uni, playing through Gears of War. By the end of the night we were a well-oiled machine with our own short-hand for tactics and our approaching each new scenario. As the sun rose, we high-fived and parted ways to bed like a pair of grizzled war veteran buddies haha.
A recent night happened when I couldn’t sleep with terrible tooth ache. I was climbing the walls and decided to stay up playing Robocop vs Terminator on Megadrive. It’s a game I played over-and-over as a kid. The music, the characters and level design, the sound effects, robocops voice-clips ‘excellent’ etc - the guns, the ‘splat’ of certain mid-level bosses as they collapse in a pool of blood haha. I realised that I still remembered the levels, the secret areas, the best weapon caches and before I knew it the world just fell away... my tooth wasn’t bothering me. I was in the game, fighting ED-209 haha. It was wonderful.
When I completed the game, I went on to watch TH-cam: a multi-part retrospective on every Spider-Man computer game in anticipation of the release of Spider-Man on PS4.
It was a wonderful night, despite the pain and when the morning light began to stream in through the window I realised that the pain had subsided and I drifted off to sleep on the couch :)

Johnny, your passion for Phantasy Star got me interested in the series; but as much as the first game intruigued me, just couldn't get past the tedium, despite my everloving patience for oldschool JRPGs. This video? Literally? As soon as I finished watching, I hopped on a bus to my nearest EB Games, and bought a Nintendo Switch, just to experience this updated version Phantasy Star. I know! Buying a current-gen console, just to play an updated port of a video game from 1989...It's crazy! But, you know? I'm fucking hooked. Been playing it all damn day. Thanks, dude. Your passion for gaming has made me fall in love with this hobby all over again.

Awesome. I love hearing gaming memories. I had some memorable gaming sessions with Zelda back in 88-89 it was amazing experience and just totally new at the time. Later my most memorable gaming moments was when I got GTA III for my PS2. I was just blown away by the realism & the vast world I stayed up half the night playing it for the entire month of Mar 2002. It was actually like I was part of the world & I'll never forget how bad I felt when I accidently ran over a little old lady who walked out in front of me. The feeling of that dualshock II controller rumble just made it seem all that much more real and seeing that puddle of blood grow I'll just never forget that moment.

One of my most memorable video game experiences was when I beat Ghostbusters on the Sega Master System. I had the game for years but could never beat it. The stairwell at the end was a nightmare providing the Marshmallow man didnt stop me first. Oh the agony of numerous failed attempts. Then one night the stars were aligned and everything was going my way. I got to Gozer (or Gorza as the manual stated) and caught her in a beam lock and she couldnt move I fired and fired perfectly timed and she dropped. I was pumped and had this overwhelming sense of satisfaction I cant begin to describe. What a great night that was!

I had the same experience replaying Resident Evil 2 remake. Being a fan of the original and playing it again it was a real nostalgic trip back to the past. It is rare now for me not only being married but also having kids. so having the experience of playing a video game that just hooks you is extremely rare nowadays.

I thought of this video recently because I was talking to my wife about a perfect game night I had a while back. She unfortunately wasn’t feeling good one night, maybe from a cold or something, and went to sleep early. I was still pretty awake though, and had recently started The Messenger. I probably put like…a good four hours into the game that night, with headphones blasting and the TV to myself. It’s rare that I get the TV to myself like that, and I hate to say it came at the expense of my wife having a bad night, but I was just COMPLETELY enveloped by that game that night. What a game to have blasting in your eardrums with some bass boosting headphones on a 65” TV. Sometimes those nights just seem to happen!

Married with two kids here. When I get that odd night to myself I don't have a clue what to do anymore. I feel like he clock is ticking and can't decide what gets my attention... Most recently I booted up the Vita to play through ffx again for first time in 15+ years and I got so into the thing that I felt like I went back in time for just a few hours. Such a FUN time. And it was me and a ps Vita, alone. Weird to put in words, but it was a gaming feeling I hadn't had in years.
