This is such a shame. The only mirrorless camera that had amazing low moire performance at 1080p was the GH2. This was the last Panasonic multi-aspect sensor. This multi-aspect sensor had a proper even multiplier that downsampled the sensor to 1080p properly. I almost bought a Panasonic G85 for it's new IBIS but then remembered that it had no low pass filter. Sure enough after doing research, I saw some youtube videos with 4k moire problems. So I just bought a 2nd Panasonic G7 because it still has the lowpass filter. It does have 4k moire but it seems minimal and very acceptable. For $500 I can't go wrong. I never shoot in 1080p with it to avoid moire since it is more pronounced. Thanks for the video.
Question: do you notice any change in Moire/Aliasing if you render you video in Apple Prores. I was editing 4k Video from the Sony a6500 and notice some slight moire/Aliasing on a tree; looked almost over sharpened even though I did not sharpen the footage. I rendered in ProRes and I don't see the Moire/Aliasing. It was on a very detailed tree. I'm assuming there was too much detail and the camera did not capture it all because of the repetitive nature of the bark of the tree.
Really? Haven't tested that, but I shoot in APS-C 4K regularly on the A7RII and think the picture quality is good (although 50p n/a). On that camera, I don't think APS-C in HD looks as sharp as full frame.
Do you mostly use the Cine2 PP6: "The C100 Emulator" on the A7II? I tested it out and really like the look, thank you! I also customized my PP1 to the SLog-Pro but not sure about the 1600 ISO... I can get some awesome looking shots under the perfect conditions but over all... not sure the A7II is up to the task as its fairly noisy... I just can't shell out the coin for the A7SII but from the looks of this video, if I did I'd have to always shoot 4K cause the 1080p footage is disappointing although I seem to be happy with my A7II so haha. Thanks... looking forward to more testing with your Custom Picture Profiles tomorrow. Let me know your favorite setting for A7II with grading in mind... I do enjoy colouring with Premiere Pro and want the dynamic range with lower ISO... I'm thinking that your PP6 is best!
Hi Norman, glad to hear the picture profiles have worked well for you. I do mostly use PP6 and it's been great. The S-Log profile I've used more sparingly, generally only in high contrast situations where I needed to pull down my highlights. I shot this video - th-cam.com/video/LjRFzMPnxw8/w-d-xo.html - using mostly PP1 (S-Log Pro) on the A7II due to the mix of bright sun and shade I was dealing with and it worked well. Since then and the video above, however, I've sold my A7II and upgraded to an A7RII, which I purchased second hand. I've not noticed any aliasing or moire so far in my images and have been shooting consistently with it for about four months. I've also loaded all of my custom picture profiles on it and it's been great, although I did dial down the red channel a bit. On the A7RII you can go down to 800 ISO in S-Log2 which is handy, and the Canon profile has intercut easily with my C100. I've now got a C200 on order so next mission will be to make sure it works with that too.
I really like The No Grader (PP2) as it works amazing when a particular LUT isn't intended for a specific look... That C100 emulator would be my choice of a flatter profile for grading though... the SLog-Pro seems to have a lot of colour and punch for s-log. ANYWAY... so what PP did you reduce the red and what is that Red colour depth now? I did notice orange was a bit more redish but the skin looks great so I wasn't complaining... Let me know the PP tweak update hahaha THANKS.
Nice - I've more or less forgot about the No Grader because I so rarely used it but glad you found it handy! I dialed down the Red on S-Log Pro. I changed the colour depth of R to +1 which is a more balanced result I think. It's totally subjective, but yeah I thought the reds in the skin tones were a little too much. I'll update the details on the main video page to reflect my change as well.
Side Trip Productions I like that Video do Adam for theCrag. I particularly like the more compressed telephoto look on the more straight on shot when he's sitting... I can see what you mean about various lighting conditions, it's cool you knew enough to shoot in the slog from the start. the blue sky looks really nice also. I just got a polarizer so I'm excited to see how my skys improve and there's lots of fishing here on Georgian Bay so it's money well spent I'm sure :) So you are happy shooting in crop mode on the A7RII? I guess you dont need to... right now I'm struggling as my main camera is an A7II and my back up or alternate for live interviews when I'm on my own is the A7. It doesn't even have the same video codec in it or have picture profiles ANYWAY... I'm trying to decide if I should finally just get the A7SII as I shoot a lot of dark band gigs and campfire get togethers or if I should get the A6500 but I don't see that offering me anything over my A7II aside from auto focus and I don't care much for that feature. Thanks again for the PP1 update!
Thanks, Norman! Just to clarify, the close-up shot in the interviews on theCrag video is from my Canon C100. So that interview setup is A7II with a 24-70mm on the wide shot (where rock walls in background where overexposed in anything but S-Log) and the close-up angle is from a C100 using 70-200mm and shooting Canon Log. So even though PP1 is what I usually use to intercut the two, in contrasty situations it works better to use S-Log. I'm not using any crop on the A7RII and so far it's been great.

If you want to shoot in 1080 50p You should switch to APS-C mode There is no aliasing in this mode Image is more detailed
