      It's a result of a mutation, which occurs from inbreeding.

    • @xyz7572
      @xyz7572 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Birds drop feathers just like we drop strands of hair (it’s called moulting for birds, and mostly happen in spring), and new feathers grow out. When the new feather is growing, it is very soft and weak and needs a blood supply (unlike our hair which is just protein), so it is protected by a keratin sheath around it as it grows. This happens all over the body.
      When the feather is fully grown, the keratin sheath is ready to be removed. Sometimes they crumble and fall off by themselves, and the bird can remove the ones on its body with their own beak, but it’s difficult for the bird to remove the ones on its own head. These can be a bit itchy for the bird, and the bird can be irritable because of it, and usually they get help from a flock mate (in this case, their human) to crumble and remove the sheaths that are ready 😊

    • @pinfeathersgalore
      @pinfeathersgalore  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! Pinfeathers are how a feather grows, and it happens in all birds. The white stuff is the outer protective sheath (made of keratin) that keeps the feather safe as it matures. When the feather is fully grown, the outside sheath comes off (which is what I'm doing in the video).
