    I have to correct Steven. Ivi Nut (Inocarpus fagifer) is not in the mango family, it is in the pea family, Fabaceae. I don’t believe this plant was introduced to Hawaii by the Polynesians but was spread around the south pacific islands like Fiji and Tahiti.

      Hawai'i was only settled by humans about 1000 AD, so the Polynesians were unlikely to be dropping off plants there 2,000 years ago.

    Legune not a drope /stone fruit Inocarpus fagifer, commonly known as the Tahitian chestnut or Polynesian chestnut,[1] is a species of flowering plant in the subfamily Faboideae of the legume family, Fabaceae. The tree has a wide range in the tropics of the south-west Pacific and south-east Asian regions, and a history of traditional use by the peoples of Polynesia and Melanesia. It is the only edible and culturally important member of the genus Inocarpus.

    Some day you should check out New Guinea and the Bismarck archipelago - its where many of the domesticated plants spread throughout Oceania originated (though I'm not sure about this one). If the edible plants of remote Oceania are obscure, the edible plants of New Guinea and the Bismarcks are virtually unknown.

    • @laurajames8071

      I’m guessing expense has a lot to do with traveling to lesser known island chains…

    • @StuffandThings_
      @StuffandThings_ ปีที่แล้ว

      @@laurajames8071 I mean, its not like where he went is going to be cheap. New Caledonia is pretty pricy, as its a vacation spot and reasonably well developed. He had to take 3 major flights to jump between island chains. New Guinea would probably be a lot cheaper than this. It would also be *way* sketchier though, but then again Jared is very well traveled. Really, I don't see a good reason not to go.

    A peculiar thing about Fly agaric mushrooms (Amanita muscaria) is that they smell and taste like bread and honey when they are dried. Fresh, they don't taste or smell anything but slightly like mushrooms.

    When I visited American Samoa these are called "Ifi" (ee-fee) . Polynesia has similar words pronounced a little different. In Samoa these are roasted in a traditional earth oven called "Umu" (oo-moo). The giant flying fox fruit bats eat the fleshy outer fruit and leave the pit to fall on ground where it's collected by the locals.

      In the Southeast USA, "dewberry" is the common name given to multiple species of trailing blackberry. Rubus trivialis is the most common in the FL panhandle. It fliwers & ripens about 1.5 months before the most common local wild erect blackberry (species: no idea). I can't compare/contrast with cultivated sorts (they all died, though perhaps Deep Southern bred types like "Brazos" would work).
