  • Today, I show my girlfriend the controversial Star Wars film: The Last Jedi. As you can tell from the length of the video, we have a long post-discussion about the film.

Hey everyone! Long have you waited...
I was originally very cautious of doing this video because I know people have VERY strong opinions about it. Both in favor and against. Our post discussion is very long, and I do my best to cover some main critiques and praises. I know I say this probably in vain, but please do your best to be civil.
We love Star Wars. YOU love Star Wars. Feel free to critique, criticize, praise, or admire. That's totally fine. Just don't be a jerk. May the Force be with you!
Also, check out that sweet Membership option up there. I hear only the coolest Force users are joining. Sith and Jedi alike are welcome. And Mandalorians. And everyone else.
    EDIT:
Because many were asking. Here's an "it's a fish" shirt. Still strange that THAT is what has become popular from this series, haha.

Holden, I agree with you about the Jedi, and I think the movie agrees with you. I think sometimes people forget that the movie disagrees with Luke's point of view that's why he changes his mind. Luke was right that they had issues, but even the movie doesn't think the Jedi should end. Hence why at the end Luke says, "And I will NOT be the last Jedi." That was him accepting that the Jedi would continue and even agreeing that they needed to continue.

Yeah, I hated how they used luke as a character 😭😭 and for me the sequels the last 3 movies looked like a retelling of the original movies it had luke and leia. here you have rey and kylo . The 1st,2th and 3th had anakin and obi wan (I"m not forgetting qui gon jin if I say it right🤔) you see anakin turn and being pulled to the dark side. here they skipped it but you get a little bit of backstory what happend between luke and kylo. So it seems like anakin in the first 3 movies going down the dark path, then luke the following 3 movies carrying the burden and weight, then this with rey it begins like a luke story arc/line but a bit changed and some subtle twisting, and kylo followed his grandfather darth vader. And the main point it makes for me atleast..every person starts of as a good person, but it can all change in an instant just by deceit and lies. Twisting the truth and disguising the lie to turn and corrupt a person, the sith just do this the best.. if someone is emotional (because of a tragedy or loss of a loved one) and already doubting the rules and starting to feel like everyone is against them tada drum roll 🔥🔥here comes the threshold where someone pushes you ever and it's sith time !!! There like a mosquito you hear but can't find at night. There like your so called best friend who wasn't your best friend but played the part like he owned it. And now I"m rambling and I suck in english 😢 but I still liked them even if it's just to get the star wars feeling again. But they got some greater characters in star wars and freaking great cgi sets, phenomenal music and some incredible visuals and alien species 👍

So I think one of the biggest reasons people were hurt by this version of Luke is that this undermines the core of his character and how he developed over his movies. His resolve, his incorruptibility, his acceptance of his inner light AND dark, and his ability to master and balance that conflict within... these are the traits that he develops by the end. It’s what allows him to stare down the literal devil, who corrupted his father, and he was able to say “no. I’ll never turn to the dark side. You’ve lost. I am a Jedi, like my father before me.” He is trapped on the Death Star, his father is this broken shell of a man, his friends in the fleet and on the planet are seemingly doomed, and he can still pull himself together and tell Sidious “you can’t break me.”
....So fast forward 30 years and now he’s cowering on an island.... and it’s due to a failure to enact the new Jedi plan he came to understand, something something now he’s scared of the dark side...? Yeah. That wasn’t Luke. It’s not just that we wanted to see Luke go ham on some storm troopers or kick Kylo’s ass, whatever. The entirety of his character development was just so wrong, it made no sense.

I see what you’re saying and what Holden said about what fans wanted from Luke. I can also see the way they portrayed him being on point if his nephew betrayed and destroyed what he was building. Add that he now becomes the antagonist to the universe? I can give Luke a break that he gave up and cut himself off from the force. He and Anikan have always been portrayed as winery.

I swear this comment is civil. But one of the things I think that wasn’t mentioned about Luke’s character, Holden, was that Luke Skywalker has always been known to be hopeful and to see the light in everything and everyone. That’s what makes the scene in Return of the Jedi so impactful. He had the chance to murder his father but threw his lightsaber away and said, “I am a Jedi, like my father before me.”
The question is, why didn’t he see the light in Kylo? Why didn’t he try to help Kylo the same way he tried to help his father? It was completely uncharacteristic, in my opinion, for Luke to try and murder HIS NEPHEW without trying to at least help him turn from the dark side first.
Also, slight nitpick, nothing to do with the actual film’s technical stuff but did anyone else feel disappointed that during his fight with Kylo, he didn’t have a green lightsaber?

    • @noahcrawford1891
      @noahcrawford1891 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Spot on with Luke, however i've heard a counter argument where he does see the good in him and thats why he hesitated and held back killing him but kylo already saw.
With the lightsaber, green would have been better but The blue one works. Its more iconic of a saber with it being Anakins and Lukes in empire

    A) Luke's speech on the Force to Rey is by far my most favorite force lesson scene in all of Star warsdom. B) The more I think about old man Luke the more I like it. Yes I wanted to see some Dark Empire Luke action. The more I think about it though the more I like the parallels between hermit Luke, and his 'father figures' of Owen, Obi Wan, and Yoda. Plus his point of hwo the Jedi have to end resonates so well with the fall of the Jedi as presented in the prequels. C) What is most interesting to me is that secretly the entire Star Wars nonology is actually the rise and fall and redemption of Yoda.

People are entitled to their own opinions, but to me, this movie is completely irredeemable because it's foundation is flawed from the beginning.
It doesn't matter how many excuses or mental gymnastics someone wants to do to try and justify it, but you cannot convince me that the most hopeful guy in the galaxy, the one that refused to give up on Anakin still being alive inside of Vader, would go to kill his own nephew over a bad dream and then abandon everyone that he knows and loves.
I understand the positive criticism of trying new things, I like that too. The problem wasn't them trying new things, it was them rewriting all of the rules and throwing everything else out the window in the eighth chapter of a nine chapter story and essentially saying that there was no point to anything that had come before. And to be fair, that's a mistake that the entire sequel trilogy shares, but this one just dials it up to 11.

Leia demoted Poe, and Holdo was running the Resistance in her stead. Poe wasn’t entitled to any information, his impulsiveness was his weakness and learning to take orders was his character development. Holdo didn’t have to tell him anything. Not sure why she gets so much hate for being a strong leader who didn’t give in to the demands of a demoted soldier who got his entire fleet killed at the beginning of the movie. I really enjoyed this reaction, I must say. And the different pros and cons you brought up were very valid. I personally did not like the movie first time I watched it for most of the reasons that you mentioned. I must admit that having watched it a second time gave me an additional perspective and I could see some more positives. The fight scenes were indeed pretty good and what Yoda mentions is actually pretty good. I think as Jen mentioned the resistance thing of Luke felt forced. Which brought me to a remark and thought. Where was the force ghost of Anakin. We see him at the end of episode 6 but here we dont see him and if we follow the logic of the movies. Why would Luke try to kill Kylo Ren or Kylo becomes dark side if the ghost of his grandfather would be around as Yoda. What u think of this?
For Jen: I personally understand what you mean, you see these movies for the first time. I believe within the fandom, there is something called star wars legends, which is not canon but deep dives actually a lot on Luke, Leia and Han after the death of the emperor. Also if you take clone wars and rebels; there is a loooot of background that for sure influences people.
Finally; I understand that they wanted to experiment with this movie but generally although it has good points, it feels like a failed experiment in the sense nwhere the mix of new and old didnt completelly work. While the mandalorian which in a lot of respects is also experimental and introduces new characters vs old characters is more successful. Why? To be honest, I don't know. Maybe because they started to make us get to know the new characters first and only after introduce older characters. Maybe also because whe they brought the older characters, they "respected" them.
Anyway, sry for the long comment. Great reaction and your analysis was actually very balanced. ;-)

This is the reason I LOVE this film. When you reach a certain age you think you know who you are and a competent human being, but then something happens to you or you make a terrible mistake and you realize you have been done everything wrong and you just feel like you want to give up. You hide because you cannot stand that you are not that image you portrayed to family and friends, and you don't want to disappoint them. You make up justifications in your mind and hide away.
This movie reminded me of that and of how many many times a person that you knew and admired for being always happy and positive and talented can break down underthe preassure of failure and expectations from others.

Hi, Vet with PTSD here, who has seen some pretty dark shit. Luke made absolutely no mistakes. He literally stopped Vader and the Emperor through peace, and only came close to violating that ethos when his father directly threatened to hunt down and violate his sister. He still regained himself, despite being around massive Dark Side users, and still fought for the redemption of his father.
The Sequel Trilogy was never deep, it was a cash grab. They made Luke dark to fit with how curmudgeonly Yoda was, they killed Han to be Obi-Wan, and turned Ben to the Dark Side to be Vader, with Snoke as a Palpatine placeholder, until Rian screwed things up so bad they actually HAD to get Palpatine for real. Rey is an orphan from a desert world who is strong in the Force, just like Luke, and with a temperament close to Leia's. Every single character and plot in the trilogy is a sad recycle of the originals to help liberate the money from your wallet. It's all meaningless, and makes the universe more shallow, and less engaging for anything set after it. The only character who WAS really original was Finn, and they buried him in the background as one of the ultimate racist tropes: Black comedy relief, whose sole purpose is to see the white people get the glory.

The Last Jedi is my favourite Star Wars film. It really amazes me that people are so hung up on the Rey's Parents question. My only issue with it was the handling. I personally never had this notion that only important people/families get to be strong with the force but TFA did set it up for us to speculate on it which is fine I guess and it's also perfectly fine she came from no one but why on earth would Rey, the character in the fictional world, think her parents were important to the bigger picture? And why would she say "They're no one"? They're HER PARENTS, to her they ARE someone. It's only to the audience that they're "no one". RJ wrote much of this in response to fan theories (look at his "your snoke theory sucks" post) and wanted to do what would "subvert" most people which can be fine IF you do it in an intelligent way and having a character speak as if she's a fan in the audience isn't how you do it. Also how does Kylo know they're filthy junk traders that sold her or was he just riffing hoping it'd convince her to join him but then why doesn't she question his knowledge/source on it? Just such a bizarre handling of it that only got worse with the next movie.

Abandonment can do crazy things to your brain and she's essentially trying to convince herself of why she was left behind with whatever will fit and won't lead to a breakdown. She doesn't know.
Kylo is a huge Unreliable Narrator in that we don't know if he is honestly recounting what he believes to be true from what he is picking up from Rey or whether he is being deceptive in the hope of manipulating her to his own ends. Nothing Kylo says should be taken at face value (which is demonstrated in TLJ by the way there is confusion over what happened the night he and Luke attacked each other)
There are lots of answers in this movie but you've got to be open to finding them.
I will however also say that the biggest disaster of the ST is that there wasn't a pre-planned storyline. Lucas never had one either mind you for the OT and he just lucked out. There's a great video picking around somewhere that talks about how ANH was saved in editing.

The truth is that, in my opinion, we already got what we needed in regards to Rey and her fears/emotions from Maz in TFA when she tells Rey "The belonging you seek is no longer behind you, but ahead" when Rey is deadset on going back to Jaku after having the vision. It was necessary in order to have any room to maneuver with a sequel trilogy. My love of this film comes from its willingness to break outside of the stale mold that the franchise has often stuck to, so I was quite frankly happy to see the EU tossed out. Disney is hit and miss with Star Wars, but there's more good than bad at this point no matter how you feel about the sequel trilogy.
I'm not trying to upset you, just being honest with where I come from as a very long-time Star Wars fan. If you're upset that Disney tossed aside the EU for a different vision you like less, that's a fair point insofar as you have every right not to like what they've done. The reality is they saw far more to gain (in terms of profit) by tossing out the EU and making their own new post-Return of the Jedi cannon. I like the end result on the whole, and it sounds like you don't, but Disney continues to make money on Star Wars and doesn't care what either of us think. I didn't like Rise of Skywalker much the way you didn't care for TLJ, and there's no point getting upset about either film because something we can all agree is good, like Mandalorian or Clone Wars is right there because Disney will keep making Star Wars until long after we're both dead. I like how in that one scene in the end of season 5 of clone wars they talk about Jedi ideology. It was really well done I think they will enjoy that (Trying not to spoil but this made me think of that)

@@Brad-xm2rj The character arcs of Rey, Luke and Kylo in my opinion, are masterfully done. The cinematography is beautiful. The themes and messages of the movie inspire me. There’s so many emotional scenes like Yoda, Luke seeing the message from leia, Luke’s death etc. You don’t have to like the movie, but to say that you don’t understand why people do is pretty pretentious

@RhuariTheWolf I get that but being bold and looking good can’t really qualify for being a good film if the plot and narrative just doesn’t really make sense or make for a good 8th film in a franchise

@@Brad-xm2rj the only thing I like about this movie is the environments, the planets they were on such as the red salt one ( I forgot the name). On top of that, I really liked the throne room scene with Kylo and Rey vs The Guards. Other than that, the switching of directors from J.J. To Rían Johnson really un did a lot of what J.J was trying to build. It put the trilogy back at square one basically. On top of that Luke was a huge let down, he died in a way that just didn’t pay homage to the original character well enough for me. He whined a lot and it was terrible. I absolutely hate Admiral Holdo’s character, the only reason she is there is because Disney is trying to appeal to everyone and not upset people by missing certain aspects. It’s like they’re trying to be politically correct, and I completely understand that, but at the end of the day, this is a fictional story and therefore it doesn’t have to be politically correct with our times. Also, Snoke was a let down, I wanted more of him. I wanted him to be more powerful than he was, like Emperor Palpatine.

Also, Kylo Ren is a great character, I like him a lot, he’s pretty much the only good thing to come out of the trilogy. I also, was let down when Rey became the Jedi, and not Finn. It should’ve been Finn......

We would inmediately trust Admiral Ackbar. And that isn't the point. Rian Johnson wants you to distrust the admiral in command. So it can't be a familiar face. I mean we know that adorable fish would never do anything to put the Resistance in danger
