I really wish they didn’t cut out the extra scene with Fin and Phasma. Where Fin told the troopers about her cowardice and betrayal on starkiller. Which is followed by her display of blaster skills. You know, her actually doing something.

All 3 of these sequences are key points in the film and add tension and emotion where they are none.
@@justme7625 For what it's worth, that Finn vs Phasma scene was changed (and hastily reshot) to the final (inferior) movie version on Colin Trevorrow's request, because it conflicted with something in his script for Ep 9.
cole schubert to be fair all those “key elements” being deleted from the movie was poignant enough to make it more focused and shortened. And the supposedly “Rey’s 3rd lesson” being deleted was logical enough due to the fact that much later on the reason why Rey left the island was bc she believed that Ben could be turned and to found out later that she was wrong. She left Luke and everything that he warned her for just for that slightest mere of hope. And that plot thread alone was very much enough of the 3rd lesson that was promised and was much more fitting to the whole thematic of the whole movie. The lesson wasn’t a literal schooling like the previous two of what Luke did, it was done by the reality itself

Isn't that what Yoda was trying to teach Anakin by giving him Ashoka?
Yoda was really trying to give Anakin an apprentice to allow him to learn to let go of attachment. To realize that at one point Ahsoka will have to go through the Jedi trials and separate from Anakin. So in a way, yes, Yoda was trying to teach the same lesson.
I love this, even with their criticisms it’s nothing but good positive energy from nerds who love Star Wars
Facts
Not all Disney Star Wars was bad, I enjoyed the force awakens, I loved rogue one, rebels, and the mandalorian. I haven’t seen Resistance, and think solo wasn’t terrible and could have come off better if it had a good sequel or two to continue/tie up the stories and loose ends it had. Lots of the comics and books have been good, and fallen order was awesome. But the last Jedi and rise of Skywalker, I just couldn’t enjoy them save a few small scenes.
There were multiple parts of the movies and novels that contradict the other films, including the force awakens, and the only consistent theme is that all that Luke leia and Han worked for and the rise fall and redemption of Anakin were all for nothing, and this new group will save the day with less resources, a smaller army, no Jedi masters, and a less experienced less force potential Jedi aspirant.
Han grows up from being a rogue and becomes a husband and father and general? Nope, leaves leia, gives up on son, now an older less talented rogue. Leia brings back the republic and defeat the empire with a multi planet rebellion and train her force sensitivity and become a wife and mother? Nope, republic didn’t stop the first order and is gone, Resistance is a smaller weaker version of rebellion, never became a master because she was pregnant, Han left her and her son became Vader 2.0. Luke never ever gives up on his family and will bring back the Jedi, be there for leia, and protect the galaxy? Nope, Luke gave up on Ben, for a split second, but that was enough for Ben to lose faith in him and turn fully to snoke, gave up on the Jedi right after his failure with Ben, abandoned his sister, and the galaxy. Anakin redeemed himself by finally fulfilling the prophecy and killing sidious? Nope, rise of skywalker trailer says otherwise.
Anakin was the chosen one, his natural force potential unmatched by any, even the ones, except for his own children, and only by losing so many limbs and with it much of his force potential was palpatine able to stay more powerful, as even by his own admission, a fully trained skywalker in 1 piece will outgrow both himself and yoda. Yet his grandson, a boy who was so powerful even Luke admitted his natural power, and was trained for at least a decade in the light and dark side, is somehow not dominating a young aspirant Jedi with a decade less training and less force potential.

Exactly. Liking or disliking a movie is personal preference but having a clear head while explaining your take is the real maturity. Which these guys clearly exhibit. I love most of the movie but many don't and as long as we don't hate each other as people over that , it's part of being a fan,else it resembles culthood

This movie is such an odd experience for me. The Kylo/Snoke/Rey/Luke stuff is just... awesome. Seriously, 9/10 for me. But then everything else is like... 2 or 3/10. This movie bounces between some of the best Jedi/Force stuff in the series, to some of the most absolutely unnecessary and superfluous plotlines in the entire series.

Right? All the kylo/luke/snoke/rey with all the force and jedi stuff I really loved. All the other stuff, the canto bight scenes, basically the finn and rose subplot I really did not care for

Wasn't a huge fan of it. Thought it was meh. But then again, I was never huge Star Wars fan, so I didn't get triggered like many die hard star wars fans who bitch about everything. Mostly judged as a movie like I do any other. I definitely found this as a better movie than Rise of Skywalker
Thats not why I don’t like this trilogy. In fact I’m ok watching Force Awakens. I think that was a great movie that had potential... and then this movie that was made by a guy who didn’t care much for Star Wars. I liked this one when it came out but then after time of thinking about the movie it’s not in my top I’ll tell you that.
There are parts of this movie that I did enjoy tho. I like the opening with Poe and Hux. It was funny. But the fact that Luke, the guy who saw good in his dad who killed millions and was one of the most evil people ever, had the small thought of killing his nephew after having a split second thought
Once again. There are parts that I like. But there’s also the bad. Good with the bad. And for me. The bad slightly overweighs the good
(I want to point out. I love Mark Hamills acting when he does the flash back tho. It gives me chills everytime and it gets me emotional. I know that doesn’t make sense with me saying I didn’t like it but I just like Mark Hamill)

(x-wings in OT had lightspeed) why could't 1 star destroyer light speed a little bit ahead and intercept the fleet? why didn't holdo tell poe the plan, this is a volunteer army, so he has a right to know. this isn't the 1st order where you only follow orders and don't ask questions. how did leia survive space without training? is she was trained, why didn't she train kylo, that type of skill surviving space shows a vast amount of skill. Rey has never lost in a fight. she has never trained. (staff and lightsaber completely different things) when rey falls into the dark side cave, how does she know how to swim? she spent most of her life in a desert planet. (could of been a cool trail) Luke would never kill a family member. that destroys return of the jedi arc. Vader was genocidal maniac, but ben solo had not done anything wrong yet. why not call leia and han to address this together? if snoke is so powerful, how could he not feel the lightsaber right next to him being moved by the force, he felt it when rey did it. i can find you a chunky list why i don't like this movie. it sucks that legit criticisms by fans are ignored. only to be called by last jedi lovers and rian johnson "racists, sexists, godless, hate filled people." The scene between Luke and Leia makes me cry EVERYTIME, even now when it wasn’t in it’s entirety
At the end of the day Star Wars is a goofy space opera that is also beautiful and powerful. It always has been.
The 20 somethings who grew up with the gritty and dark Clone Wars tv show and 3rd prequel think that is what all Star Wars should be, but forget 2/3 of the prequel trilogy was just as corny and cheesy as the OT, and even Revenge of the Sith had some corny ass shit too
@@dachshund_gaming Why does corniness mean things can't be serious? I think TESB was fairly serious. Even ANH, to me, is fairly straight laced. ROTJ, I think is the goofier of the bunch, but I think even that has more serious elements. And TPM and AOTC, for all the goofier elements (Gungans and 50's diner), I think is also fairly serious, (again exception being Jar-Jar and such).

I know this movie "divided" the Star wars fandom, but i enjoy every movie, game, series and comics, old or new, and im glad that the new Star Wars content brings new fans into this marvellous universe, childrens that never got interested now they are, i'm just very happy about that, like i said, i am an easy person.

8:14 The interesting fact about THAT particular scene is that she was actually imitating Kylo Ren's training moves, because he was using his saber the same time she was. Would have been nice to have seen that and not given that lame excuse Rian gave us about ''wanting to show the audience that they could see each other''....we already knew that from the FIRST time they saw each other! ....and for the record the idea of using the Force bond was a nice touch in TLJ since THAT particular idea had yet to be used *in the movies* !

Watching TLJ in theaters was such an emotionally touching experience for me. As someone who's gone through depression and felt like giving up and isolating myself would be better for everyone, Luke's arc spoke to me so much and I hate when people say it ruined his character. For me, it MADE HIM a character I could get behind and fully appreciate. I can't really relate to OT Luke because his issues are massive in scope. I'm never going to have to fight my corrupted-by-evil father and save the universe from a dictatorship while mastering magic powers. It's still a really cool Hero's Journey story and I still love the OT as much as I did when I was a kid, but Luke went through some real human problems in TLJ and watching him overcome them in the end was super empowering for me.
I still really love the rest of the movie too and I'm glad Rick walked away feeling positive about it despite his reasonable issues. I hate seeing TH-cam full of angry rants and ugliness about this franchise, so to see a few guys just sit down and have a chill talk about the movie for a change is really cool.

Boring and Bland Interesting to hear considering it had semi-opposite effect on me. I was already in a shaky place when I saw the film, but when I saw my hero, the person I always looked up to and aspired to be because of how hopeful he was, how he never wavered from seeing good in people ever when they couldn’t see it in themselves, when I saw him, even for a second or two consider murdering Ben, the child of his sister and best friend, in his sleep because he saw darkness within him... that just made me give up for a good half a year.
Thats really interesting and I agree with you totally B&B. Everyone got angry when Luke considered killing Ben, but thats because their great hero had flaws.They ignore that the Dark Side is not a "one and done"deal.
William Webb I like it when our heroes are shown as flawed because I feel like I can relate more to them that way and I find it shows that nobody is really perfect. But that’s just my opinion

I would disagree that Han wasn’t different in 7, his moment where he talked about the force being real only feet away from the place he initially derided the concept. That was pure magic.
Also when he’s telling Finn “people are counting on us, the galaxy is counting on us!” That shows a huge vocal change from the original. I know a lot of the journey is taken in the OT but I don’t believe he made the full journey by the end of RotJ.
Going from a self-centred non-believer to someone who considers the welfare of people he doesn’t even know and believes in the Force? I loved that 😊

I really enjoyed your guys reaction and discussion to this film. I'm not a fan of this film, but I'll always be down to watch others react to it with an honest opinion. It's wonderful for me to see the different viewpoints and the reasoning behind it. I'm hoping that maybe some decisions in Episode IX will lead me to appreciate this film better. I'm fine not liking this movie, but it won't make me stop loving Star Wars! Thanks for the awesome reaction guys!!

A point about the the lack of Force Ghost teachers, one possible explanation about their appearance is *where* they appear. Kenobi appears weakly to Luke for a few seconds on Hoth and then fades. The other 2 times he appears is on Dagobah, a place of power with the Force. Here his Force Ghost appears with clearer blue reception and they can talk for several minutes. He is only a voice in A New Hope and does NOT appear later in ESB when called at Cloud City. Ahch-To is the first Jedi Temple and so is likely one of the strongest places of power with the Force in the galaxy. So here not only can Yoda appear as a Force Ghost, but he can seemingly manifest Force Lightning. Most other places in the galaxy it may only be possible to appear a few seconds at a time (like on Hoth) or not possible at all.
This comment section reminds of the never ending struggle between the light and dark side. Both are right and both are wrong. What I tell you is true, from a certain point of view (;

People just fail to realize that they can like a movie, yet can agree that the movie has terrible storytelling, flawed tone, inconsistencies with previous movies and establied characters and terrible on-the-nose messages. It accually is not that difficult. But once you start defend the accually very obvious crap, because you think you need to in order to defend what you felt while watching the movie, then you just make yourself look like a clown. It accually is not that difficult to understand long established standards of storytelling and filmmaking. And the main argument, that the fans just did not get what they wanted is rather weak compared to those standards. A good movie does indeed not give the audience what they wanted, but usually something that the audience did not know they wanted. TLJ didnt do that, it deliberately didnt care about Star Wars. It just wanted to make a meta-statement about how people consume entertainment, some art-sy idea of a arrogant director. I guess on an art scala it scores a 10, on a movie and storytelling and Star Wars continuation it scores barely a 1.

@@Ahov I am not acting and I dont believe that. Anybody can come in and present their take on how things are and make arguments for why their opinion offers more value compared to mine. My points were that by going off common story standards, the movie is terrible in many ways. Furthermore, by promoting that the movie instead is a masterpiece in all these standards, is a shame to all the stories that have some thought and effort put into them and I rather see more of those instead of more of whatever TLJ was. Thats my whole take on this.

The Last Jedi is my favorite of the sequel trilogy. And it's wonderfully refreshing to hear constructive criticism instead of out and out negativity.
It did so much to set up a great finale.....

Love these guys (even the others) talk about Star Wars. They pick up on everything so I know that when they give their opinion they are doing it with facts to back it up. So many things that they've pointed out that I had never noticed before which have completely changed my opinion on certain scenes and about certain characters.
The fact this movie has some the best and worst stuff in all of Star Wars in it at the same time is what is so frustrating about it. The Canto Bight and Holdo stuff is aggravatingly terrible, but then the Luke/Rey/Kylo/Snoke stuff is so fantastic. The Yoda scene is one of the best written scenes since Empire.

I've said this before in discussions with my friends. This is the Luke who did it all alone. Whether by choice or by circumstances, he tried to revive the Jedi and face the darkness virtually alone. The Luke in the Legends books (who I grew up with and have loved his progression), was not allowed to do it alone, which is why he succeeded. Between Jedi masters and students returning to help him, and Leia and Han's involvement and inclusion of him and his academy in the galaxy, and Mara Jade most of all, he was never alone in that timeline. I believe the seeds of both versions of Luke exist in the Return of the Jedi.

I personally hated the movie when it came out. But after dissecting the decisions made after Episode 9, I see The Sequel Trilogy as a terrible tradegy of being too clingy of the past. The Force Awakens's setups would have forced Rian to make the most predictable story if he went with it. So TLJ could be seen as an attempt to get rid off that baggage of the past to make a new refreshing story. The conflicts of TLJ cannot be solved by beheading and old wrinkly Palpatine clone and that is new and interesting as opposed to TFA or TROS.
Rian could have made Snoke the badguy of Episode 9 and could have given Luke a leveling up reason to be on the Island, but that would be predictable and make for a mythless and emotionless story. Giving the characters psychological barriers outside of the big bad makes things more interesting.
Kung Olaf also miss management, lack of competent writing, boring characters, villains are one dimensional, ect. I could go on.
Rogue one I think is the only movie to come out that I’d say was unnecessary yet proved that it could justify its existence and make me invest in the characters and story. Unlike every other film in Disney trilogy.
I’m not mad. Just disappointed because I know there’s talent up there to make movies like rogue one. I just never figured it be so difficult to make a competent film, let alone a Star Wars movie.

For those who don't know why Luke died, there is video for that and in that video he explains that when Luke uses the force projection (it have a wierd name) which actually kills the Jedi if been used. That's why Kylo had that face cause he also know that Luke sacrifice for rebellion.

How come you liked the Luke stuff? That was the biggest turn off for me. Luke is the most hopeful and endearing heroes in film, he was prepared to die to show that his incredibly dark and lost father still had good in him, yet in this he saw darkness in Ben so went as far as to go into his room with the intention of killing him? The two don't seem to match up. He's become this grumpy old man who wants nothing to do with anyone? Rather than staying to try and save Ben? I know people change over time but that just doesn't scan for me, it didn't scan for Mark Hamill either because he said that this was 'his' Luke
@@darthconquerus Mark Hamill has said that he liked this characterization of Luke after actually seeing the film. Luke almost killed Vader in a moment of rage in episode 6. Luke having moments where his emotions take over him aren't out of his character.

Ben however never actually threatened anyone and had a bad dream. Luke then attempted the murder of his nephew before ever trying to talk to him like a normal human. In this movie, ben had not actually ever done anything to anyone before luke tried to murder him in his sleep.
@@darthconquerus Luke has always been ready to kill if his sister was in danger. When Vader told Leia would be turned he almost killed Vader. When he saw Kylo blow out Leia of her ship in his vision he had just as twisted thought as in the Second Death Star.
@@kungolaf4499 I don't think those are too comparable - one was in combat against the second worst person in the galaxy who was trying to wind you up, the other would've been in cold blood against your nephew who at that point was still on the light side and asleep. Not to mention Leia at that point was the only thing he had and he needed to protect, whereas his priorities would've shifted by that point to the rest of his family, plus the new Jedi order, he had a lot more responsibility than during the second death star
I apparently lost my legitimacy as a Star Wars fan because I didn't hate The Last Jedi. I felt like the movie had a few issues but overall I really enjoyed it. It seems that a lot of complaints stem from Rey's origin story (or lack thereof), but that was one of my favorite things about it. I liked the fact that she was a nobody. Apparently there's a bunch of other logistical inconsistencies but I guess I didn't pick up on those.
Either way I can admit I'm not a "fanatic" so maybe that lent to my enjoyment (I didn't obsess over marketing or theories leading to release). Though I for sure would call myself a SW fan (watched the OT as a kid and fell in love).
I'm almost thankful that I'm not a fanatic considering the consensus from that crowd, but I appreciate everyone's opinions and I'm happy to admit I don't have the same "deep lore" perspective that others have. All I can say is that I'm really excited for IX and I'll be there in my SW shirt for the midnight viewing! :)

Robert Murrhee and yet, the only species depicted in that scene that we’ve seen before this movie, other than humans of course, is the chandrafan that gets mentioned in the novelization. IMO, it was the least Star Wars a Star Wars movie has ever felt. In the theatre watching, I fell asleep for a second during the chase scene and woke up thinking I was watching Valerian or something.
@@williamwebb580 We don't have to have seen species we've seen before for it to feel like Star Wars. The whole point of scenes that add flavor to the universe, that engage in world-building, is to show us something of the Star Wars universe we haven't seen before now, new species, a new planetary locale, things that enrich that universe as a whole by their inclusion. Places like Jabba's palace, the Mos Eisley cantina, in fact, Mos Eisley itself, & Mos Espa, the pod race arena. Even the Death Star. Sure, important plotlines took place in those locations, but the locales themselves were still parts of the Star Wars universe we hadn't seen. They could have taken place in one location, but the film was engaging in world-building with each new locale we visited, including Canto Bight. If showing us Canto Bight was unnecessary, then, by the same reasoning, so too was setting those other scenes in Jabba's palace, Mos Eisley, the cantina there, or even Tattooine, or Hoth, or Endor. Those were wondrous new locales we'd never seen until then. So too is Canto Bight. Just because you personally don't care for that locale, doesn't make it a bad or uninteresting one, except to you, & just because you personally want the plot to just keep moving forward past whatever you deem irrelevant doesn't mean it should. Just because some might feel the scene of the Falcon hiding inside the space slug in Empire Strikes Back was filler & completely unnecessary to the overall plotline, & just wanted the characters to hurry up & get to Bespin so the plot could move forward doesn't mean it should be left out of the film. People are so concerned with moving the plot forward at breakneck speed that they've forgotten to just sit back & enjoy the ride, enjoy the world-building scenes, the new locales, new species, new starships, etc.

It broke the flow of the plot and completely derailed the sense of agency of the Resistance's situation. If they wanted to display some atmosphere and wonder then they shouldn't have made the entire plot a slow ass chase scene. And two, Rose completely 180's what she "taught" Finn by stopping his big hero moment because she suddenly loves him for no reason.

I didn't love this movie (I still liked it way more than most people) but this movie made me LOVE Kylo Ren. His ethos of "fuck it, let's just let it all burn and do it over" is so rad. And the fight in the throne room is probably the best Star Wars fight scene.

I think the reason Luke being that way is the problem people have with it. As soon as Luke found out that vader found out he was his father he wanted to turn him. But know Luke sees a family member with some dark in him and he thinks about killing his young FAMILY member. That’s insane. I just can’t wrap my head around it. It’s not that luke can’t be a darker character, it’s the way they did it. There are books where Luke becomes evil and people love those. This was just handled poorly. And this is not the most disappointing part of the movie by far.
Well the way i see it is when lukes looks into bens mind he is experiencing all he will do, and we know from the force awakens how vivid and real those visions can be, its not that luke went in there wanting to kill Ben its was fear that drived him for that split second. When he was fighting vader he came even closer to killing him cutting off his hand blade ready to strike him down, in my opinion these scenes are almost one in the same. Luke almost strikes down his father out of anger for potentially corrupting his sister, and he almost strikes down Ben out of fear for doing all he will do, in the end luke choses not to kill either of them but here it was to late. Im not saying you're wrong for feeling the way you do, i respect it just adding my thoughts, thanks may the force be with you
You cannot really compare those two reactions. Luke had no responsability toward Vader's victim because they were past victims. For Ben it's future victims, that's why he is more inclined to stop him before he kills innocent peoples.

The problem, in my mind, with Snoke is that he went out too fast after being built up to be this hugely powerful force user. True, fans did over-hype Snoke. But what is also true, and shouldn't be ignored, is that The Force Awakens builds up Snoke, his powers, his authority, his influence, and leaves him a mystery for the fans to discuss and theorize on. He was this mysterious massive dark-side force which seemingly turned Kylo to the dark side, the movie begs for the viewer to ask "who is this guy? Why is he so powerful? How did he convert Kylo? Etc." These aren't the only movies to ever see a fan base who theorized about a character/mystery. Plenty of massively popular series (Example: the MCU) have built up questions in previous films, leaving the audience to theorize, and then answers those questions later. The issue with The Last Jedi is that despite the questions being raised in The Force Awakens, they are never answered in any meaningful way almost as if to discourage any speculation or theorizing at all, which to me just seems like a bad way to galvanize a fanbase. Fans become fans because they love the media they are watching. Fans become a community when they discuss the media and create a community through shared enjoyment and discussion, specualtion and theories are apart of that and it felt like Rian Johnson didn't understand that and ignored it.
Ok, rant over. Thought it needed to be said given how massive a fan of Star Wars everyone here is. TLDR; Snoke's fate was bad because it didn't answer questions that were raised in Force Awakens not because the fans speculated and didn't get what they want.
Except there was really nothing interesting about Snoke. Andy Serkis gave the role his all, but in terms of character and motivation, Snoke was just Palpatine 2.0 With An Even More Fucked-Up Face, and they did the smartest thing they could with such a nothing character: make him a red herring. An obstacle in the way of the real Big Bad's quest for power.
Thespis64 you can say that now that he’s dead and gone. But at the time of Last Jedi that just wasn’t the case. He had potential. The whole point of those Snoke theories wasn’t, in my opinion, because fans were building up things they wanted only to cry when they didn’t happen, it was because we were curious and expected answers or some kind of development in the Last Jedi to explain him. It’s more about lost potential. In the post-Last Jedi world, Snoke was nothing boring and uneventful. But that idea is a result of him being unexplained, underdeveloped, and underutilized in that very movie. That’s a fault of the movie not giving some kind of context not the fault of the character himself or the fans.
When the three of you tried your hardest not to cry when luke died. That was adorable.
Who runs the galaxy? What state is it in? Why are they called the resistance if they were in charge? Who are they resisting? What even is the first order? Why is Rey so powerful in the force? What were the 3 lessons that Luke taught Rey? Also how did the first order come up with and have enough resources to be able to take over the galaxy after they lost their super power the death star? Also didn't snoke tell Kylo to return to him to complete his training? What happened to that?

Why didn't the Dreadnought just shoot at the Raddus flagship instead of the stationary, abandoned rebel base? Would have made a better movie if it was 2 minutes long. It ruined lightsaber fights and space battles (and the canon reasons to make them 'one-off' or 'impossible' don't fly- two answers: turning lightsabers on-and-off while off-body blocking, and go find a large asteroid for your kamikaze hyperdrive).
Also, I still personally have mixed feelings on "Jake". I just agree with Mark Hamill more.
It didn't ruin anything. The old movies and their internal logic, space battles and lightsaber fights still exist. This movie just did them wrong.
Foreword: This comment is not meant in any way as something against fans who like "The Last Jedi". I have been a Star Wars fan and collector for most of my life, and as such am quite passionate about it. When the movie first came out, I went to see it in theaters, and at first I liked it. It was only after I took some time to truly process what happened in the film, and went back to see it again that my feelings for it changed. If you like the Last Jedi, I respect your opinion, though I would ask in return that you would also respect the fact that mine comes from a place of wanting to see the films improve and rise to the heights of their much exhaulted predecessors.
Also, I loved the prequels ;)
All that said, here is a list of the issues that I had in the movie;
1. In the scene where Kylo and the two Tie Fighters head out from the Supremacy to attack the Raddus, in which they do crippling damage to the Resistance, destroying their entire fighter wing, and upper command structure, they retreat to the Supremacy because they can't be covered by the fleet. Rewind back to the beginning of the scene, and as they are flying out of the hanger, you can see HUNDREDS of Tie Fighters in that one hanger of the Supremacy alone, all of which they could have swarmed the Resistance ships with, not to mention the fighters aboard the numberous Star Destroyers accompanying it.
2. The main chase of the film makes zero sense, in that the Resistance ships, suffering from a fuel shortage (which by itself I am perfectly fine with), are chased endlessly through space by the First Order fleet due to the fact that they cannot catch up to them, as their own vessels are slower than the Raddus and it's auxiliaries. Here is my problem with this. I come from the Mitth'raw'nuruodo school of precision hyperspace jumping, and even though those books are not canon anymore, the logic still stands. The First Order existed in one of the most chaotic and rapidly changing parts of space in Star Wars, the Unknown Regions, for almost all of their existence, and would have had to have been at least familiar with precisely calculated hyperspace jumping in order to navigate it, and if they themselves do not have a fuel shortage like their quarry, then all they would need to do is jump a couple of their Star Destroyers just ahead of the Resistance ships, and force a confrontation that would allow their comrades to catch up.
3. Fleet Admiral Akbar was killed off with none of the grandeur that his character deserved. Replace Holdo's divisive character with him in the plot, and the story becomes significantly better. Fleet Admiral Akbar, one of the most battle hardened and experienced tacticians in all of Star Wars, taking the Raddus, turning into the First Order fleet, and uttering a variation on his famous line "It's a Trap", seconds before hyperspace ramming the Supremacy and crippling the First Order fleet, would have been one of the most glorious moments in all of Star Wars, and a truly worthy death for one of the most well known characters in Star Wars.
4. Vice Admiral Holdo's withholding of her plan from Poe resulted in a perfectly reasonable mutiny led by Poe to try and save the ship, and all of the lives onboard it, all over a petty power play of her's to assert her dominance over him, rather than trying to actually be a decent leader, and inspire confidence in those under her command, personal biases and gripes be damned.
5. Holdo simply stands by and watches for the first few minutes as the First Order annihilates the Resistances transports, rather than taking action and attempting to use the Raddus to protect them, even by using the 3 km long vessel to block the incoming fire from the enemy blaster cannons. This results in the deaths of countless Resistance members.
6. When Finn goes to sacrifice himself by crashing into the First Order's ram inorder to try and save the Resistance base, Rose crashes into him at the last second (which by itself could have killed them both), and after crashing into him, justifies it with one if the most idiotic and illogical lines ever, "I saved you, dummy. That's how we're gonna win. Not fighting what we hate, but saving what we love". Mere seconds later the ram fires, blasting a hole in the barrier, and all seems pretty much lost for the Resistance. Had "Deus Ex Rey" not been there to move the boulders, they would all have been slaughtered, and then her love would have resulted in the total demise of the Resistance.
With this now finished and out of the way, I will post a seperate follow up list of all of the things I loved about the film (of which there are a fair few), at a later time. Thank you to those who read this, for taking time in the first place to read this, admittedly quite long, though necessarily detailed post.
All fair points, save one. The movie made it clear that Finn's crashing into the ram cannon would not have incapacitated it like he thought it would, so Rose was actually saving him from sacrificing his life for nothing, as the ram cannon would have fired anyway, as it would have still been quite operational. That knowledge sort of makes what Rose said mean a bit more.
@@robertmurrhee6016 I must have missed that detail in the film. Is there a video which contains it online, or a time stamp for it's occurrence in the film so that I can go back and watch it. I want to make sure that I can substantiate this properly for myself, for potential future reference.
@@blazer2123 It's at the point in the film where Finn is just getting ready to start his run, as the cannon becomes fully charged. Poe says over their comm, "The cannon is charged! Edit: I might be wrong. That still may only mean that they knew Finn would die doing it, not that it would fail, but I originally took it to mean that the plan would fail. Can't currently locate anything else on the matter without watching the movie again.
Also, Eric, Mark didn't hate the character of Luke in TLJ, he said he disagreed with the direction, but after talking more with Rian, he was persuaded.

@@MRocky323 You assume to much. I like the movie as I previously stated. So i'm not a TLJ "hater" I didn't watch out of contexg interviews. Hamil had this idea that Luke was the hopeful guy, but he doesn't write luke, He knows that. He didn't "hate" it. And I never read a legends book in my life. Just watched the OT where Luke saw the good in a guy who killed over a million people for the last 20 years. And refused to give his nephew the same treatment, who didn't hurt anyone at the time.
So again: Not a hater. Hamil had a different take on the character in his mind but he doesn't hate the new version. And the last piece was my opinion on the whole luke situation. What do you think? Please keep it civil.

Sammy Dray my Favorite is Empire and my second is revenge of the sith. I know it’s weird to have the Last Jedi so high, I recognize this movie has problems and completely understand why some absolutely dislike it. To me the Luke stuff, the fight with the Pratorian guard and everything with Kylo, Ray, and Snoke are just amazing.

I really wished they dove into the lore of how luke felt the jedi should end. He played it so well. I wish they had a whole TV show about this post jedi world. Like its something all masters end up in. A sort of despair.
For a thousand generations the jedi kept the peace........so it made no sense
I love The Last Jedi, each surprising moment led to another and got me more and more hyped.
Listening to Eric’s point of view in this video really makes me want to rewatch this movie. Since the release of Disney Plus, I binge-watched Episodes I-IV in a weekend, then I caught up on Mandalorian and now I’ve been watching the Clone Wars for the first time along with the Blind Wave Crew, playing Jedi Fallen Order and I’m falling in love with these movies again since I was a kid. I’m genuinely excited to watch the Last Jedi again, I feel like I’m going to see it differently this time.
I love all Star Wars it’s all amazing to me. I cannot wait for TRoS I’m seeing it on the 19th (first time I’ve been to a first day opening for any movie)
I liked this movie when i 1st saw it. Upon repeat viewings i discovered more things i didnt like about it and its kind of "meh" to me at this point. If you like it, thats great. If you dont, thats fine too. People should be able to like or dislike whatever they want without being dicks or having other people who disagree be dicks. Simple.
I know many people complain about the Leia in Space scene, but honestly when I first saw that scene in theaters, a freaking tear came to my eye! Not tears of sadness or disappointment, but of emotion. The music, the cinematography, and the fact that we see Leia use the Force outside of sensing people was, for me, amazing!
The way I explain it to people who say about TLJ when it comes to why things "go nowhere" or means "it means nothing" is this. You are looking at the movie the wrong way. You are looking at the movie as a story-driven film. That is not what TLJ is. It is character-driven. Canto Bight is made the way it is to push Finn to firmly joining the Resistance. Every conversation he has with Rose and DJ is done to move him towards that goal (with Rose pulling him towards it, DJ trying to tempt to stay the way he is. An angel and a demon you might say). Poe has Holdo (his angel) trying to push to become a leader instead being the hotheaded, dangerous hero, while Leia (his demon) will encourage him to try and not be a hothead, but will never do enough to put him in his place (also as to why Holdo didn't tell Poe the plan. Poe just got most of the Resistance fleet killed. He was just demoted. When he introduces himself to Holdo he uses his previous rank, and is immediately trying to find out he can be the hero (ie blow up the bad guy). The original plan they had never changed: find a base and call for help. Poe assumed that because the First Order showed up they were going to go blow them up. They weren't looking to fight because they had so little left, so it stopped being about fighting, and became survival. Could they have done something to explain why Holdo wasn't telling them. Sure, but that would drastically change Poe and Finn's arcs because they are so intertwined with one another. Without Poe distrusting Holdo we have no Finn leaving and learning more about the galaxy, we have no DJ learning about the Resistance plan, we have no DJ selling out the Resistance causing Finn to take the final steps to joining a side, and without that, we have no Poe taking the steps into becoming a leader. Everything feeds into eachother). Rey has Luke (angel) pushing to her to forging her own place in the universe instead of trying to find someone to give it to her, while Kylo (demon) feeds that insecurity by offering her place flat out. Kylo even has a failed arc (opposite Rey's with Rey as his angel and Snoke his demon). I adore this movie. Every minute of it brings me pure joy (only minor issues are with Leia's force scene being filmed a little weird (still love it) and Canto Bight being maybe needing 30 seconds trimmed off it to make it flow better (still love it, its rich people Mos Eisley)). It has been my favorite Star Wars movie since first viewing and I have not looked back on the decision. I hope that maybe some of what I said maybe helps you look at things a little differently with the film. Have a kick ass night everyone!!
I could not agree more with the way you broke down the characters and the way the story is told. Originally I had the movie in my 4 spot when I first walked out but every single time I watched it or thought about it since release day I've loved it more and more
yeah TLJ is not a story driven film... the story sucks and makes no sense.
Is it character-driven? Perhaps, but the problem that those are cardboard characters with no real arc. They just fell flat in you compare them to OG trilogy. They have no character at all.
Its funny that Anakin had bad in him and tried hard to be good, and Ben Solo is good, and tries hard to be bad. Ben not realizing Vader was basically cursed with his life.
