My 10 year old sister in law watches this type of shit. She also does some of these annoying gross pranks, and my mother in law doesn't care what she's watching. She just gives her the tablet/ tv to watch anything and everything on TH-cam. It's frustrating to clean up after her pranks and cooking hacks. Not to mention irritating that she gets offended when I tell her she should supervise what her daughter is doing and watching. 😒

@@stealthis I just hear a lot of stories about kids getting in tons of trouble for blowing all their parents’ money on Roblox or something haha. I’m glad you were a child prodigy in medical school at the age of 10 lol. Maybe it’s not that I don’t have faith in the children, but that I have zero faith in the parents who do not monitor their activity online to any degree. Four-year-olds have tablets haha. That’s fine if the parents put the proper controls on it so that they cannot access things they shouldn’t. But sometimes the parents don’t ☹️

    • @stealthis
      @stealthis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +134

@@Rachel-xg7hs it has nothing to do with being prodigy. Stop setting the bar so low.
Do you really believe that all 10 year olds think it's ok to take their parent's credit card and go buck wild with it? Were you like that? It's more of a problem with the upbringing in general if they do these things.

    • @Rachel-xg7hs
      @Rachel-xg7hs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +158

@@stealthis I’m pretty sure I acknowledged that it was the parents’ fault in my reply to you haha. And the prodigy thing was sarcasm. Complete sarcasm. I never stole my parents’ credit cards to buy anything, no. Not at any age. But also there are kids much younger than 10 using the Internet nowadays. I’ve seen it. I was a 2000s kid, so I’m pretty fluent in technology haha, but I didn’t get my own device with internet access until 11 (an iPod touch), and didn’t get my own phone until 14. Little kids have tablets now. And I’ve met more than one six-year-old with a smartphone. If the parents are monitoring everything the children do, then great. I don’t care what devices they buy them. But if the parents are too stupid to make sure the kids aren’t getting on TikTok and finding stuff like this, then it’s just not fair to the kids. These videos promote it like it’s not wrong at all, like it’s not something the parents would be unhappy about. When you’re little and you see grown-ups doing something, sometimes you assume that if they’re doing it, then it’s okay. Why would they be doing it if it wasn’t okay haha? And not all parents let their children know that they shouldn’t borrow their credit cards. They assume the kids won’t do it or won’t know how, so they never talk about it with them. The kids might not know how bad of an idea it is because they’ve never had that talk.

I know plenty of people who were taken from parents, including myself, only to be put in some terrifying foster family orphanage, or just straight up on the street because the abuse from the foster family, foster siblings, or other awesome part of the institution became too much to take. I'm not saying "don't call CPS", just be mindful of it. So many people call because they believe the kid will magically be better off, and thats not always true. For the record though, I'm all about telling that woman that you would call CPS if she didnt learn how to use parental controls. Growing up, I had sites like BrainPop, Kizi, Coolmathgames, Animal jam, and Disney Create to play on, and as I grew more trustworthy and responsible, I was given a phone and my own laptop.
It's painful to see actual kids at the age of like 7, on TikTok, TH-cam, and other sites that they aren't ready for. It isn't that "internet bad", but there's a time and a place for everything, and people can't just throw their children into the internet hoping they float. I'm 13 myself, and glad my mom never let me get a phone until my 12th birthday. Even so, the pandemic and the few people who popped up while I was scrolling through youtube shorts (i never got tiktok) were enough to make me spiral into a poor excuse of an emotional wreck with adhd. I personally believe If I ever decide to become a mother, I'll do my best to make sure I expose my kids to much better content than this.

12/13 is still too young. Most phones have screen time limiters you can set up for different apps. Please use them to try to limit your social media time to an hour a day or less. I have a psychology postgraduate degree and the research is starting to come out suggesting that social media has a very pronounced effect on the brains of developing teenagers (attention span, self esteem, mental health). I started using social media at your age, I'm now 23, and I regret it every day. This period of your life is when your brain is developing most; you still have time to change your behaviour and give yourself a better life.

As someone with a younger sister, I HATE these channels with a passion. My sister watches many videos and I guess at some point she stumbled upon the wrong type of content. Now, she believes that all girls should be pretty and that boyfriends are VERY important and has toxic beauty standards and stuff.
It’s gotten to the point where she refuses to eat cuz she doesn’t wanna become “fat and ugly”
I really blame myself for not supervising her better. I’ve been supervising her a lot these days to make sure she stays away from that bullshit.
Fortunately, she’s getting better now. Me and my mom are kinda changing those fucked ideas they brainwashed into her head. We’re kinda using the things she’s obsessed with (such as beauty) to make her do good things instead of bad things. Such as telling her “you’ll look most beautiful if you eat lots and grow up nice and healthy”.
I’ve also been having conversations with her, telling her that a boy’s opinion about her or her appearance does not matter at all. I told her that if any boys bother her, she should come straight to me and our 3 older brothers. I’ve thankfully managed to catch this on pretty early and change the thoughts while they were still fresh in her mind.
Guys, supervise your kids and younger siblings. The internet is a very shitty place, unsuitable for children at all. Sadly, there are many content creators who don’t care at all about a child’s well-being and just do this disgusting shit...

I got a phone at 12, but wasn’t allowed social media. At 13, I got instagram, but lucky for me, I already heard about all that bad stuff, and only followed art and comedy accounts. I am very thankful for my parent’s education on the topic of social standards so I knew not to compare myself. Social media wasn’t what damaged my mental health, It helped me find things that inspired me and made me love life again. But giving your toddler the newest iPhone is not beneficial. I spent my whole elementary school years learning how to be in touch with nature. I was kind of living in the past because my parents sheltered me from technology, so when I see young kids with phones, I question the parenting skills. Morale of the story, please teach your children to be sufficient without technology and determine when they are at the proper level of maturity to give them a phone, otherwise they will be seriously addicted.

Even though I vehemently despise the rhetoric of "these kids and their phones. Technology bad amirite?" I would urge a parent with young children not to give them technology without restrictions and to encourage open dialogue of what websites they would like to or currently like going on (without stifling interests). Leaving your kid on the wild west of the internet is socially akin to not paying attention to them in a bar or party. Like, dont be surprised if they mimic or see some messed up shit. And if they do see/do some messed up shit, learn how to teach them what it means and why it isn't good to behave like that. Of course without damaging the trust you need in order to successfully raise your child.

He keeps acting bad and saying some pretty bad things and my parents always ask where he learned that from, when clearly he's just repeating what he heard on TH-cam. It's a mess.

Some time ago I found a really great comment on the topic of nowadays internet vs. the internet we were able to explore as kids:
"When we were kids, the internet was a sandbox-style open world - full of dangerous things, yes, but also nearly unlimited potential - and we learned to be careful, and we learned fast, and we learned fairly well.
Now, the internet is a series of black box silos built by corporations to maximize engagement at the expense of everything else.
I may have seen Two Girls One Cup by accident and at the tender age of ten, but I never had to deal with companies using gambling-addiction-creating strategies pioneered in literal casinos to try and make me hand over hundreds of real dollars at the same age. I may have been exposed to vicious bigotry in anonymous and pseudanonymous messages boards, but I never had algorithms spoonfeeding me explicitly far right radicalizing content. The blithely unfettered access people of our generation had is just genuinely not the same as what kids with unsupervised access are getting today."

I recently had to deactivate my younger nephew's TikTok account (he is about 5 years old), and he had liked, followed, and DM'd basically porn accounts where grown women were practically naked and bouncing up and down. The fact that he is exposed to that kind of thing makes me really sad and scared for his young mind along with all of the other children out there who have access to things like a tablet. Creators need to be responsible, I hope those porn accounts see who views their stupid content and think about what in the world they are doing. if you have siblings/young family members/etc seeing this kind of content and don't have the power to take it away from them, make sure they know to ask you if they see something they don't understand. don't punish them by taking their tablet/phone, it'll only cause them to be more secretive. try to explain what's going on (if appropriate) or give reasons why you don't think it's appropriate for them to watch: again, not explaining will make the kids go behind your back. I've done this with my sister (plus checking what she's watching/playing every once in a while) since my parents don't really get social media and it's worked pretty well!!

My younger sister has become super toxic and has a huge victim complex because she had full access to the internet with little to no restrictions, now it’s gotten to the point that she’s impossible to live with. She argues over everything and treats everything like a horrendous task.
I’m autistic, and she blames a lot of stuff she does on my “stupid autism”
For example; I tell her to put or leave our cat alone because she never leaves him alone. She yells or screams at me, either my name like “Kodaaaaaa!’ With a huffy face, or she’ll yell at me to “stop butting your nose in”
If I tell her to stop doing something she acts like I just told her to stop breathing or something. She escalates arguments so much, to the point that my parents don’t trust her enough to leave her home alone with me and my older sister (19) because she causes so many problems, she’s gotten way worse once she joined secondary school and she excused her behaviour by saying “I’m almost a teenager now” because teenagers are notoriously moody, but not like this??
We were walking to school one day and I was waiting to cross the road- she walked out in the middle of the road in front of an incoming car, so I yelled and told her to move back, she did but then started an argument with me saying it was my fault she almost got ran over- it was so ridiculous I was actually baffled at how she came up with that. She said it was because I was autistic and she thought I couldn’t cross the road despite me doing it for almost 5 years now- she infantilises me because of my autism and said countless times that she was basically an older sister because I was autistic- she’s 12, I’m 15. I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself and I do. My parents literally had to take her with them on a sailing trip they took to a nearby island when they were meant to go alone because they couldn’t trust her.
It’s just getting increasingly harder to live with, especially now that it’s the summer holidays and we’re out of school and at home all the time.
Wow that was a rant but my point is please try and limit your younger sibling’s exposure to things, or your child’s- although the internet is great it’s dangerous and my sister has literally picked up these behaviours from videos I’ve even seen her watch. She speaks to me with these stupid comebacks she hears on TH-cam and thinks she’s super smart and cool, in response to a simple question or request.
If I had done this sort of stuff when I was her age, I would have been figuratively killed by my parents, but her being the youngest they’ve become way more lenient with everything and they NEVER punish her for anything, and if they do it has no effect because the punishment is bad and not for nearly as long as it should be- I won’t go into detail but my parents were away and my little sister literally thwacked my older sister on the back, super hard and was horrible and disobedient for over 2 hours, when she was just asked to go downstairs for lunch!! All my parents did was take her devices away for a day!!
edit, an update a year later: she is worse now.

She's undoubtedly going through puberty and her hormones are making her less mentally stable. I behaved similarly at that age and did not have access to anything like TikTok. I don't think she should blame your autism, obviously, the things you're doing seem like normal older sibling things. But I will say that my life dramatically improved when I flat out told my parents that I was not my sister's mother, my mother is her mother, so I could not and would not be responsible for parenting her. There is only a small age gap between us and it made it difficult for my sister to even respect that I was wiser than her at all. And I pointed that out to my folks and they realized maybe I WASN'T actually all that much wiser than she. Obviously I thought I was, but it didn't really matter. What mattered is that I couldn't be responsible for her, even though I love her and want her to be ok. She's too much for me, even on a good day, and quite frankly she was a handful for my folks. Explain things to your parents that way, and thier expectations of you may change 🤷‍♀️.

Take this with a pinch of salt bc im No proffecional but i think it best to either take away her devices permanetly or take her to some kind of therapist. Or both. As someone Who also had unlimited internet access this kind of behavior is too much. Yes children can be real mean or too much (especially when your ND) but this is not „normal” and with all respect to previous comment i Don’t think its „hormones”. Joking poking my nosy head in and concurring with another commenter - I think something deeper might be going on with her. Her behavior kind of reminds me of a kid I knew who had oppositional defiant disorder (and some other mental health issues), back in the dial up days when we were all limited to a certain amount of hours of internet use because it would rack up the phone bill. The behavior started insanely young, and restricting what they could watch online/on TV only did so much. I'm not saying your sister specifically has ODD, and I'm not a mental health expert to give opinions that can be taken too seriously, but it just feels like there might already be another factor at play, which the free internet access worsened.

As a young teenager who (hopefully) would like to raise a child one day when im (much) older, things like this really terrify me. I grew up right before this kind of "children's content" was really widespread (late noughties/early 2010s) and even then I know I was lucky to not encounter much of this kind of stuff (tho I'm sure I still definitely did see some), and by the time I'm ready to have children I'm afraid itl only get worse. The idea of how much you would need to monitor your child's entertainment, from such an early age (not just with social media, but also with toys and other forms of media as well) is quite stressful and scary, even without thinking of the effects constant monitoring would have on the child's mental wellbeing. I think I've lost my point here XD, but what I'm trying to say is that it just seems so daunting to raise children in a society where new ways to subtly and easily hurt children are popping up all the time.

I'm 35 and it's like you took the words out of my mouth (except that the internet barely existed until I was almost a teenager... but otherwise, same.) I'm still deciding if I want to have kids. I'm impressed that someone your age is thinking about this too - but at the same time, I never underestimate kids and teenagers. Young people are often a lot smarter and wiser than you get credit for. Hope all of us can figure this stuff out if we have kids.

    • @johnroach9026

As a young adult who also wants to have kids, I'm also terrified. I grew up in the naughties, which meant I basically saw the rise of web 2.0 and the anarchy of early youtube. However, the content I grew up with was stuff like Stampy, the DiamondMinecart, Annoying Orange, etc. Even there, my parents heavily policed it to the extent where I was banned from watching a few channels, and in retrospect, I completely understand why. Exposing a child to mindless screaming "content" was not healthy. I wasn't introduced to phones and social media until much later - I got my first phone at around 13, and didn't get social media until around 15 (and even there I limited myself to Insta - I didn't get snapchat until 18). Thank God I did that - its definitely saved me a lot of issues in the long run.
If/when I have a child, I fear that this mass produced dopamine slop will be forced onto them regardless of anything I do. With the rise of VR, AI and other technologies, I wouldn't be surprised if we've optimized addictive kids content by the 2030s, and with the decline of traditional (and wholesome) kids content creators, I don't see any choices beyond accepting that my child's pliable young mind will be hooked onto these content mills, or completely barring my child from the internet until they're old enough to think for themselves, possibly stunting their learning and ability to socially interact, and possibly causing anger towards me in the long term for isolating them from an entire world.

I'm definitely not one of those people who are like "kids shouldn't have phones at all" but I do think a kid having a phone at an early age is a big privilege and that, that privilege should only be given away when the kid understands some things.
    Things being :
-Does this kid understand the value of money, do they understand the value of what they are given? Do they understand that having this is a privilege and that they should not misuse or abuse it?
-Do they know how to avoid unsafe/inappropriate content? Do they know what's suitable for them to watch/participate in or not?
If you get the answer yes to both or even just one, please do not give your kid a phone. They're not ready for it.
A lot of people (especially parents) nowadays just hand a phone to a kid as a way to quickly "fix" bad attitudes/unhealthy mentality problems, and they don't even teach these kids that there is inappropriate content on there. They don't realize that this quick "fix" is actually bad in the long run because the more spoiled you are, the less space you have for growth and empathy.
Storytime (Just wanna vent cause this video really affects me. ):
I have a 5-year-old little sister. I love her, but if I'm being honest, I don't want to deal with her daily or even be near her most of the time because of how spoiled she is. She was already incredibly spoiled because my parents would literally buy her anything whenever she wanted, especially if she was making a fuss (throwing a huge tantrum) about it. Then my mom decided to let her phone "make up" for all the time she didn't spend with my little sister at the age of 2. Alone. Unsupervised. She could have been watching anything.
My little sister didn't understand the value of money back then and she *still* doesn't now. So she would often throw the phone on the floor *on purpose* and crack the screen (whenever she didn't get what she wanted). And my mom didn't care to teach her the value of things, the huge privilege she had, or to even respect others' property. My mom has never really disciplined her on that or taught her how privileged she is and that she should respect other people's property, but she instead had the gall to replace the phone 3 times (which isn't the bad part since it's her phone after all) but also let my spoiled little sister misuse and break those as well.
As the middle child who was not nearly as privileged and actually had to learn empathy, respect, etc through watching others, through long lectures, through actual discipline, it pisses me off.
Then my dad who also complains about her being spoiled as hell by mom (for some odd reason) decided to buy her a tablet at 5. She doesn't even know how to write or read, or what the actual value of numbers means. She doesn't even know how to write her own name properly...
(Side note: She doesn't go on Tik Tok but TH-cam (mostly TH-cam shorts) which is equally as bad. She's learned how the word "kill/killed" but she doesn't understand how heavy its meaning can be and says it all the time jokingly- almost in a mocking way. And you may not think TH-cam is that bad, but trust me, TH-cam is bad too. You can easily watch ***n or come across h***** on TH-cam.)
Moral of the story: Don't use technology as a quick way to shut up your kid when they're throwing a tantrum/acting disrespectfully/to make up for the time you've missed.
Because I promise no matter how embarrassing (if you have to discipline your kid in public) or long it may take, in the long run actually disciplining your kid and teaching them the value of things (not just materialistic things, morals, ethics, etc too) is much, much better than spoiling them.

Personally I don't have a big issue with children having access to the internet, but it needs to be in moderation and under parental/guardian supervision. Keep an eye on them and make sure that they're watching or viewing age appropriate content, use the parental control functions on their devices (they're there for a reason!), and be sure to educate them on internet safety. Another good tip is to sit down and have a chat with them about what types of things they like to watch online, that way you can keep tabs on the sort of things they're looking at and how it's effecting them; and if they're watching something inappropriate you can explain to them why it's bad and why they shouldn't be watching or engaging with that type of content.
