Love the simple layout. Obviously this one is not one-channel, but I wish more brands would do single-channel high-gain amps with great EQ sections instead of so many channels, modes, and features.

@@PhuketMyMac No. Since the overdrive channel of the JCA50, 100 and 22 is basically Mike Soldano's Hot Rod circuit, I prefer to keep it stock. Plus, one of my favorite guitar tones was done with a Hot Rod 100 so I'm a little biased on this circuit. 🙃 The only mods I had done on mine are the pedal-friendly FX loop and Ultimate Clean for the Crunch channel, both by Epic Amplification.

I own a 5150 block letter , a mid 80's JCM800 and a JCA50, and the JCA50 is my go too, great amp versatile, and low cost (I play Mathcore/Proggy metal)
Bought mine new from Thomann at £250 ($280ish) about 5 or 6 years ago. At the time my 5150 and JCM were both broken, and the 5150 was in for repair, and I needed an amp fast. I have lots of Distortion pedals so I just bought the cheapest 50watt tube head I could find, without even hearing demo's/playing the thing, I figured I got gain pedals I can use them if the gain sucks.
When I first plugged in and hit the lead Channel I was blown away .
The "crunch" channel does a great proxy "fender" Clean with low pre amp gain settings, great pedal platform.
The Lead channel is thick and with an OD handles modern metal tones with ease.
Its quite bright , you need to tame the Treble and the Presence controls.
I find it fits my pedal board a lot better than the other amps I own whilst still giving me great Amp gain tones as well. I wonder why anyone bought Bugera's whilst these were a thing, they are head and shoulders better than anything under £/$600 maybe even up to £/$800

If you keep the gain low on the crunch channel and use a bright sounding compressor you can get a legit sparkly clean tone out of the crunch channel. Like a real clean.

    • @mariomarino3020
      @mariomarino3020 ปีที่แล้ว

There's another solution. All tubes need to be changed anyway. Using lower gain preamp tube on position #1 does the job. Like JJ ECC 83MG instead of JJ ECC 83S which are on other postions. However It affects overall sound a little bit. 2nd channel is less tight.

12:00 prime example of why less is more with gain. As soon as you cranked the gain it turned into a fizzy mess. It's big with the depth mod, but not "clanky" as I like to describe it like you'll find in the 5150 or other popular metal amps. It's more of a thud, kind of low mid heavy and not super immediate in it's reaction. If you can find a jet city cab and load it with k100 speakers, that REALLY helps tighten the low end reaction, as it's front loaded.

It's extremely loud. You wouldn't have a chance to crank 2nd channel not even on the big open stage. I've never had any opportunity to play it past 6 anywhere, counting open live big stages too. And I play loud in a loud band. Crunch channel is opposite if you want total clean sound, This thing doesn't produce clean sound if crunch gain is any higher than 1, but then you must roll crunch master volume all the way to match 2nd channel in dBs. Or use volume pedal in FX loop.
Change all tubes, add a few mods - this amp is made as a platform for modding, good cab, and you have a beast. If you don't like hiss in upper frequencies put Jettenuator between the head and cab with minimum attenuation. Hiss is gone, now it screams up there.
DR / JCA combo. DR will define bottom, JCA will define middle range, they will both fight for treble frequencies.

I have the JCA 50 (also a 50 watt Jcm 800 and a 5150 Block Letter) and yes it is EASILY loud enough to practice. I have my lead and Crunch volumes on 4 and 6 respectively and its close to being too loud hahaha.
My 5150 is only slightly louder if I am honest, easily keeps up with a drummer bassist and another guitarist, with head room to spare
For the record my JCA50 is my go too amp over the 800 and the 5150 , even though the 800 and 5150 are iconic amps. I feel the JCA50 is just more versatile and does what the 800 and the 5150 does pretty much in 1 box

@@mariomarino3020 I get clean sound out of mine but I use single coils(for metal) so probably the low out put allows me that, but you can always use an OD to reduce volume hitting the front end with a Humbucker and probably get a clean out of it. I can get a very Fender-ish clean(bit more mids) with the pre on about 2 (but no more)
To me the character of the gain is almost 5150, but the eq curve is more Marshall if that makes sense, takes ODs and distortions into the crunch , very well,

@@jacksmith4460 Yes, I'm with the humbuckers, DM's on LP's, huge output, OD already used for another purpose, I rather play with guitar vol pots and I use 3 stage volume pedal in FX loop. It allows me to have full range clean louder. Volume reduction of any kind (OD, compressor...) on the front end takes out a lot of harmonics from the initial signal, it becomes poorer therefore smaller, so even the preamp can't make it angry. It's cool when you need clean like "down" or "back", it won't work for loud rich clean. I need all of it so I'm jumping around my equipment like a monkey in the jungle 😅

Love my 20h and hope to find a 50 watter or 100 watter one day for a decent price; or I might hold off to see what new fun is coming from Jet City. spoiler: big changes coming to the company !

Every amp can benefit from an EQ in the loop. I recently used a Joyo 6-Band EQ in front of a Blackstar's Overdrive channel, and it makes a great (but somewhat noisy) colored boost pedal.

Great amp but it broke from something a higher quality amp should have survived, that's my only critique. The tone to price ratio is undeniably nuts.

I have a Peavey Triumph Ultra 60 combo I cant give away. $350 for an all tube combo with the Ultra channel you would think I would have sold it LONG ago. Nope.
