Everyone knows the Blue Voodoo line was solid, despite the nickname. They can sound very good. Crate in general gave great value to cost conscious buyers. They had alot of fans for various reasons, including me.

And they had some great solid state models, too. Like GX-130C (as well as the rack preamp version called XLP), Excalibur and GX1200H.

I had the solid state GX-130C half stack. It sounded awesome but I used an EQ. Now I did get a weird digital sound with the delay, especially with high notes. It didn't matter if it was running through the loop or direct input. The delay wasn't a pedal but a rack unit, don't know if that was the reason or not. I also had the DOD MP-2. I never got a great overdrive or distortion out of it. If I could go back, I would have gotten OD pedal instead of the MP-2. I ended up selling the head about a year ago. The cabinet and other equipment ended getting stollen, long story.

The best kept secret in the tube amp world. The blue voodoo is one hell of an amp. It just takes some time to dial in the sound you want, which if we're honest; it's the same for all amps. You have to spend time dialing in tone

Seriously underrated amp. I played in a southern rock, grungy, metal band in the late 90's through one of these and got lots of compliments on how great it sounded. My secret was I used the clean channel exclusively as a pedal platform. I think I ran some Korg mult-fx board through it (emulating a JCM800 I think?) anyway the clean channel is amazing, and loud as all hell. I was never a fan of the gain/lead channel, so I didn't use it. Always thought the guys running a tubescreamer into the gain channel sounded like crap, and maybe that's my opinion, but pretty much everytime I played a show with another band running a BV, their guitarist would be asking how I got mine to sound so good lol And I didn't scoop the mids at all, you need mids to cut, and I had them in spades with this amp

DUDE! Try a BBE Sonic Maximizer in the effects loop. You'll be AMAZED at the difference in tonality, and volume! I don't even use any kind of boost in front of it. With volume at 9:30, plenty loud with full band! The BV60 has a lot of gain. I think that's where a lot of people run into issues. With my BBE 462 in the effects loop you can make it sound nice and thick, and it kind of tightens the sound up. Good tubes make a hell of a difference! The other thing is the speakers you use with it. I'm using G12T75's and G12H100's in 4x12. I have a Celestion G12-80 in a 1x12 that I'm going to try with it. That speaker is a bit darker and should work well.

I had 3 BV's. The BV60 in the screen shot looks exactly like my old one right down too the same missing gold caps on the knobs. The BV's have a nice clean but the drive is anemic in many regards. The best incarnation of the BV's is the later produce and tough to find 3 channel BV 150 and BV 300. They redesigned the amp and added a 3rd channel with more gains available. BV's are a good and cheap way too get into tube amps if you are hesitant too spend big bucks.

It comes out, it's everyone's favorite, 2-3 years pass, rich kids beat them up in place of their superiors, people get them used and the reputation tanks by 4 years after their debut.* I remember this amp in the 90's and everyone was floored by it over Marshalls but only for a few years. I also remember ratty SS coming out as heads for $200 and $300 that everyone raved about, then they would replace it with something tube or 5x the cost digital or solid state, and suddenly they were POS.

It's not a perfect amp, but when I was young and couldn't afford a $1,000 half stack for shows that were un-mic'd mosh pit / dancing venues for straight edge kids, this was awesome. It would also be cool to do the same for the OD pedals just to see if you’re using gain or just boosting. That Drop C tone was so punchy. I believe the young folk would say that tone is very cash money.
PS: All you would have to do is review an Orange Jim Root Terror, and you’ve basically done my whole collection on the high gain side.

I had three at one time back when i was younger. A 60 watt and two 120 watt heads. I had two straight and one slant cabs loaded with eminence texas heats and swamp thangs. I put a 12ay7 in the reverb section, mix of 12at7 and 12ax7s and it totally opened up the tonal spectrum, killed the buzzy distortion and sounded more rectifier like

Great review and especially points made on CAB, guitar (and pickup), and pedal selection. I've been playing a Blue Doodoo for 19 years and still haven't got around to buying a "better" amp. I do play out of a Fender 4x12 with Celestion v30's and had all the tubes switched for JJ and amp biased... aside from that it sounds damn good with my teles, LP's and a PRS. The amp tech even said he doesn't like Crates but this one sounded great... he was genuinely surprised, and so was I when I bought it. Biggest thing is, is this going to be your dream amp or the most well rounded or even best at anything?... nope, but it does a lot pretty damn well if you're willing to play it long enough to find out what you want out of it.

I played through a BV120 half stack in the 90s. I thought it sounded great. I only gave it up because I got sick of dragging around a big amplifier. I put it on consignment in the early 2000s. It sold in 24 hours so I guess others like it as well. Yes, the clean channel was superb. I thought the high gain channel was good. I have to admit, this amp looked extremely cool on stage even if the orange glow was not from the tubes rather from amber lights next to the tubes.

I've had several 120 models of the BV120H. They did need maintenance about once a year for the circuit board. They tended to get cracked solder joints which was typical for all the Crate and Ampeg amps of the 90's era. Put good tubes in it and it sounded great. What was weird to me was the blue tolex giant gold logo version sounded different than the black tolex with an industrial looking logo even though they were supposed to be identical. I A/B's them in the same cab and they sounded different every time I came across them. I tended to like the black ones a little better. They were a little fragile but other than that, they were pretty good amps. Heavy, as the 120's were like 65lbs. I ran gain and bass at like 1 o'clock, mids around 11 o'clock for most things. Highs were around 1 or 2 o'clock. It worked well. Good demo.

As you say, you have to tweak a Mesa to get it where you like it! What's the difference between the Mesa Rectifier and a Creat Blue Voodoo? Well about 1500.00 dollars. That's it. I have a Mesa, the Crate 100 BV, Marshall's, EVH, Peavey, B-52, HiWatt, Fender, Vox, Orange, Bugera 1960 and so on! They all have their quirks. Also we all hear different things. It's all subjective. I can't stand the people who won't run a certain amp because it has a Cheaper name associated with it. I'll run anything that 1, Sounds good. 2, Has been Reliable for me. 3. Works for whatever situation I need it for. I've got expensive amps and amps that were a heck of a lot cheaper financially. If they do the job and do it well, I don't care what name is on the front. Usually it's a mob, pile-on mind-set. People want to sound and look cool. They don't want to stick out too much. Screw that crap! That's what Rock and Metal was built upon! Take your stand! Plant your flag! Do your thing! Don't back down! What's usually in a name? It depends how much money is thrown at it. Period!

The problem with the the blue voodoo is simple, even if you can dail in a good tone,if you play with a drummer that plays with any kind of power your tone will completely just vanish, you will constantly be trying to turn the thing up,it can get a decent scooped sound, but just doesn't work when turned up it gets weak and just doesn't move enough air,try the crate stealth series, now that is a sleeper in the tube amp world, they come in 50 and 100 varsities and are really good amps.
