    Hi, for the last question, forgive me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's meant to be the square root of 1-(x)cubed over 4. I tried to rearrange the equation and there is an (x)squared that needs to go somewhere.
    The estimates for the solution still fall between 1 and 0.
    Thank you so much for this channel, it has been enlightening for me.

    For the question at 16:59, if you were given that equation and asked to rearrange the formula to make x the subject, how would you get x=1-xcubed/4. Please could you explain how rearranging that equation would equal to that iterative formula, as i cant seem to understand. thanks

    • @catherinejohnson2885
      @catherinejohnson2885 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the equation has been rearranged incorrectly. the right side of the equation should be square rooted, giving x= sqrt(1-x^3/4). You can check the values at the end as well by substituting them back into the original question. If you use the iteration formula given (the non-square rooted one) and keep pressing the equals button on the calculator until it doesn't change, it gives you something like 0.25, which really is nowhere near 1. If you use the value from the square-rooted iteration formula, it gives you 1.

  • @KK-mk8xb
    @KK-mk8xb 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    for the questions where it says show a solution lies between x and x, aren't you meant to look for a change in sign when substituting?...or can you also use your method? thanks

    • @TheGCSEMathsTutor
      @TheGCSEMathsTutor  5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      You are only looking for a change in sign of the equation in question is equal to zero, then Ofcourse you would be looking for one above zero and ne below zero, this is only one example of one specific question that appeared on an exam recently, the equation in question does not have to be equal to zero to apply an iterative method so watch out for this. If the equation is equal to 5 for example you would be looking for a number above and below 5. Hope this helps! 😁
