I would think that in most cases iteration would be on the calculator paper, however there’s no reason why it couldn’t be on the non-calculator paper. Perhaps they would ask how to rearrange into a particular form and then a simple substitution or two. I hope that helps

It’s subtract one squared... as in take away 1^2, not (-1) squared. Hope that helps
