Yule & Murray 6 starters each and both contributed to the bonuses tho the loads of Lit questions were in Yule's favour. Funny how Yule only smiled when he killed the cricket bonuses while Murray more sedate when he killed Tolkien's LOTR bonuses! This episode way too easy hence the super high score of 360.

Well done Durham. That was a very impressive score indeed. Very strong knowledge between all members and they functioned well as a team, without anyone under or outperforming the rest.

Once upon a time, the US show College Bowl originated this format. Today, such a program would be impossible in America. Conversations are limited in complexity these days - and I'm in NYC, where conditions are more favorable than in many places. As our current leader would say - err, Tweet: "Sad." Not being an American self-hater, just sayin'
I look forward to a new posting of this show every Monday. And you are quite right: There is no show in America where contestants are encouraged to display their mettle in a fun, but serious, no-nonsense way; and should such an enterprise be attempted, it is sure to fall shy of the mark because of needless bombast, unclassy cultural quirkiness, and even, perhaps, a deficiency of academic rigor.
No reason to bag on America. Jeopardy! is probably the closest show we have to celebrates smart people. Plus, both countries have trash tv. And both countries have outstanding tv. But yes, celebrate that you have this, Only Connect, QI, and others that embrace knowledge.
Western civilization has incentives to produce the best, as is on display here, and the most base, which is on display most of the rest of the time. If you think a few dozen of the top students in the US would be outclassed here, you've been watching too much fake news.
And another match that Durham Harmonics will no doubt complain about. Only this time, *every* person in the match does first name intros (why, Durham Harmonics? Because all of Edinburgh and Trinity College, Oxford did it last year and UCL and Emmanuel College, Cambridge did it but their captains said their surnames).
Too many of the 'lighter' questions are male- oriented and focus on male sports- football and cricket. I think UC needs to review bias in its questions.
Sure but saying some sports are male oriented, you are yourself making a bias. Who says women can’t play football or cricket? Sports doesn’t have a gender, relax. You’re just looking for something to complain about.
@@Tom135 ..The show is called University Challenge. The contestants are elite students of the finest institutions of higher learning in the nation. I make the assumption that the 'challenge' is to answer questions that exhibit what they have learned in the course of their studies. So I repeat: I do not see how questions about football are appropriate for this sort of test of academic knowledge. Statistics about Cricket is a subject for a pub quiz.
I've been away for a few seasons and I've just been noticing quite a few categories about women's achievement, people of colour etc, not that i mind that they are the answers , it's just interesting that they started categorizing in that manner. So instead of having a more general category and then narrowing it down by the question, they have already narrowed it down by the category. I.E; ("category (sometimes including nationality)" + "question (often including nationality)" + "clue clue clue"), are instead; ("category (nationality/gender/ethnicity/sexuality)" + "question" + "clue clue clue"). So the contestants have more information to go by, for those categories, before they get the clues. I then, admittedly, a bit provokingly, concluded that it had to be the SJW's because they seem to be obsessed with the segmentation of society and life into gender, sexuality and ethnicity.

Durham had a knowledge and recall skills set really well-distributed among all the members. That's an amazing team
they had a great subject spread compared to the usual of mostly science majors
New champions? That was bloody impressive.

Yep. Truly impressive.

what?? Gal Gaydote? It is on wikipedia, come on! [ˈɡal ɡaˈdot]
Gal: Who is gay?
Billy Hogg from Strathclyde went to my secondary school. Sat next to him in a few classes. Nice guy.
That was probably the highest score since the Martinelli-Loveday team! So impressive!
Durham, bring it home
