    I had to do this less than a week ago in an autozone parking lot. I bought a 1990 jeep XJ 2 door, 2 states away for a good deal. It had sit for the last 12 years in a carport. I put a battery in, changed the fluids and filters all out. It started right up and sprayed fuel everywhere, out of every connection on the fuel line including every injector lol. Replaced all the seals, started it again and it ran great. Then had to fix the blinkers and some other wiring. Started out on a 700+ mile trip home, got half way and it got a severe death wobble. I couldn't go over 45mph lol. I found an autozone and ordered up every tie rod end for the steering I could. I had to wait until 10am the next morning for the finale one to come in. Changed them all in the parking lot with barely any tools, then had to do an alignment with 2 brooms I borrowed from autozone and some straps I had lol. It was enough to get me the rest of the way home though, that's all I needed lol. It's going to be my project truck now, can't wait to get more going on it.

      @@dickderilict3036 Not much, measure yours before you take them off, and measure the new ones to try to get them the same. Then you can do a mini alignment if needed with something straight strapped to the wheels. It's supposed to have about an 1/16th of toe out if it's your daily and you just run in 2wd most the time. Toe in if you run in 4wd most the time with the np242. If you have the np231, then definitely don't run 4wd in the streets lol

    Here is a quick tip to save you some time get 4 pieces of sheet metal put grease between two of them then drive front wheels on them now adjust your toe with ease.

    If you do it this way with the Jeep jacked up, you need to make your bars on the tires parallel with the Jeep, not with a level. Reason why is because your effective caster has changed since the Jeep is jacked up, and caster does affect toe slightly.

    You should use gauge blocks between your rims and the angle iron to raise them off of the tires. The rubber can flex differently front to back and throw your measurement off.

  • @Dnaceman
    @Dnaceman 11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Why would you do this with the vehicle jacked up? Once you drop the vehicle the alignment changes. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. I have done this type of alignment, but with the vehicle sitting on the ground. What is the advantage of having it jacked up?

    1st class vid,but i like to do it with car on ground,front wheels on top of old tiles with salt between the tiles,two either side, of wheels they turn very easy,like the angle iron idea,off to get some for future checks.

      Maybe i got lucky, but i measured the distance between both rear tires and matched the front ones to it, then ran some twine around the vehicle tires and measured the distance between the gaps in the front to adjust toe. Worked like a charm.

    I used a big set of wood working bar clamps on my tires, works the same and easier. Pipe clamps would be the same. Pipe clamps attach to whatever lengths of gas pipe you want to use, so you can make a set of pipe clamps as long as you want.

    shurely you should do that with the jeep on on the pavement setting level,on jack stands how do you correct for some parts being worn alittle more than others?

    I always do it with the wheels on the ground, and I just use the tread pattern to measure. Its a little tough in the back side of an XJ because of the control arms but it can be done..

    1. Check for worn parts by working wheel back and forth while the other watches 2. Do alignment on ground, it will never be right in the air all its going to do is wear the tires out. I sell alignment equipment btw.

    Hi Matt. I'm a female and I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland suspension lifted Jeep. I just bought it. I don't know much about country lifts off road trucks . The steering wobbles left and right when I drive it at any speed limit. I've called several places and they will not do a alignment because it has a suspension lift kit on it. I took it to a shop and they charge me to change the tie rods and after they change them I paid and left and the car still did the same thing? The tie rods are not the problem. The wheel does not stay straight when I drive it any limit and it goes left and right all over the road. Can you please tell me what you think my Jeep needs? I really appreciate your help I'm tired of paying so many shops and not having it fixed. Thank you 🌸

      I took it to a shop that said they would be able to align it because I thought it needed a wheel alignment. After the shop had it for 2 days the guy told me that he aligned it and I went there I paid them and picked it up. After I drove it out of the parking lot it did the exact same thing so I took it back to the same shop and the guy that told me he aligned it said that he couldn't really do a full alignment because he thinks that it needed track bar bushing track bar both ends and right upper control arm. But that same guy told me two different stories so I don't believe what he says. At first he said the alignment was done in the car was fine and after he said that it needed other parts so I don't know which way to go with this. I spent lots of money on it and the repairs that I did were never needed. The car is very pretty and I can't drive it. I love your videos and want to say thank you so much for a wonderful you tube channel.

    • @bleepinjeep
      @bleepinjeep  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would guess that your steering gear box could be going bad or some bushing in the steering, track bar, or tie rods could be bad. Before you replace the gear box ( I have a video on that too) go check out my videos on death wobble and check the things I talk about in those videos first.

    • @JesusJesus-tc5vg
      @JesusJesus-tc5vg 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BleepinJeep Hi. The tie rods are new. I replaced them because the mechanic shop thought that was the problem but that really was not the problem. They never needed to be changed. I will definitely check out your other video! Your videos are the best and thank you so much for your time🌸 I appreciate it! I'll keep you posted💮

    One recommendation do it from center to center of the tire while in the ground. I align after every wheelin day since I drive it on the road. Get within an 1/8 of an inch for toe in n you'll be fine. Nice vid otherwise! And I second always having a second hand on deck to do this.

    I did this I’m 95% I did it wrong or something else is wrong because once I did it I went for a test drive and my steering wheel jerked strongly even with a death grip i stopped in a parking lot put it back to how it was things were fine still had my lean to the right alightment but I didn’t jerk anymore not sure what I did wrong tips? Other then that I use your videos a lot and this is the only time I had something go wrong

    Ok first off I'm not trying to be a dick just a question as I'm looking to do an alignment myself... when you put the square stock on your tire and ratchet strapped it "tight" how do you know it didn't smush one side of the tire more than the other even an 1/8th inch

    • @bleepinjeep
      @bleepinjeep  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You don't, that's why this is a backyard alignment. But you just get it the best you can. I guess if you really wanted to be precise you would take the wheels off and lower the disc brakes to the ground and then take attach the angle iron to the discs.

    • @Nothingtoya

      Ricky D also, if you have a set of wheels without tires on them, you can use those.

  • @NoFear4XJs
    @NoFear4XJs 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Man you guys missed a boat load of info on this one...
    The T-case does make a difference. The np231 case means the toe-in should be set slightly inwards (the front of the tires should be closer than the back) while the np242 has a zero toe-in figure.
    231 is 1/16" to 1/8", 242 is zero toe. 242 is set to zero to prevent binding when in 4FT.
    Don't use a tape measure either. they tend to sag in the middle this can affect the measurement by more than the spec.
    Use a 2x4 or something solid like a bamboo rod or wood, metal rod.

    Rubber and straps... I would much rather pull off of the rotors (with the lugs tight).
    Your method only works to get you to the alignment shop, or if you never drive on the pavement. you can't pull accurately off of rubber.
