1:00 for further context, it had an issue where it was loosing spark or the spark was weak atleast n that was part of the initial prompt to take it to the dealership along with the running issues, yada, yada.. It was a while back I don't remember the full details.. Used to be a reputable dealer but they really did us wrong on this one so it's great to see someone treating it with the respect it deserves. Bravo 👏 (My dad's bike)
Great troubleshooting. Sounds like the dealer didnt want to get inside a set of old carbs. Far easier to sell bolt on stuff or plug a computer in. Great work as usual
Spot on about the ultra sonic cleaning, it’s just a part of the process, learnt this with a bank of GSX-R carbs that needed so much more than I paid for
Apart from your obvious technical genius, what makes your videos so watchable is the human feelings you also portray, fear, worry, doubt but also pride and elation when you inevitably succeed. it’s great, man.
I'm surprised most people aren't aware of or don't use the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Chapter 4 deals with services. If more people were aware of chapter 4's basic content, most dealers wouldn't try ripping us off so much. One part (sec 49, (1)) defines the trader "must perform the service with reasonable care and skill" Services should also be supplied within a reasonable time, unless a time scale is specified (due to trader informing you). It doesn't look like much care and skill was lavished on that bike prior to you receiving it 🤔
good work Jim, those carbs are a mess, you may want to ask the customer how many other folk have had their big clumsy mitts on the bike. to get the best from our ultrasonic i use a syringe and while the carb is under water jet as much fluid into as many holes as i can, surprised how many air bubbles come out. As you say not the complete answer. Plenty carb cleaner and air then more carb cleaner. Ultrasonic tank good for external clean after a scrub down with stale fuel or diesel.
Great video. I had similar problem with the diaphragms and sliders on a 535 Virago. Very similar carbs. I’m sure the diaphragms weren’t that expensive. Bought mine from NRP Carbs. I glued the diaphragm plastic inner to the slider and that sorted it. Pity my son then wrote the bike off! I have another one in the garage that I’m rebuilding. Long term project.
Nice job, once again you’re gonna fix it 💪🏻🛠🏍️. I bought a ‘97 V-Max from my uncle, was standing still for 7 years. Also had blocked pilot jets due to corrosion
It's an absolute farce that dealership would not do the simple tests to quickly point out the fuelling issues. To fix this bike is literally a carbs rebuild/refresh. Anybody who works on older bikes would get those conclusions quickly. I just cannot believe that dealer would opt straight away for a new ECU, what a travesty that dealer is ! You should make all viewers aware what dealership this was because this bike's case is an absolute robbery on the poor owner..
Dealerships, both car & bike alike are trapped by not being able to return electrical components, hence if they wrongly diagnose an electrical fault, order in a high value part, as in this case an ECU, they can't send it back if it proves to not be a fix. Dealerships should always speak to the customer prior to ordering any parts in, if they can't 100% say the ECU is goosed, they've no business billing the customer for a missed diagnosed job, unless the customer has given consent to accept the bill regardess. This is correct process laid down in "Terms & Conditions" of a dealerships working practice. Customer has a valid claim to go direct to Yamaha & demand a full refund for any money paid. I've worked for Honda for 30+ yrs, so I know first hand how it should done.
Like the Bearded Mechanic says, "There's mechanics, and then there's parts replacers." Had a main dealer quote me £2k to strip down the EGR system and shot blast it with almond husks to clean it in order to clear a fault code, when I knew a 30 minute blast at 70 mph on the M4 would do just as well.
Another great post, fast and accurate diagnosis which would of taken me the best part of a day of headscratching. probably the first time those carbs have ever been removed from the look of them,. 👍
Great Video Jim. I could tell you wanted to go straight to the carbs. That's experience right there. But It's not the way we are taught. Follow the trouble shooting charts. Looking forward to part two.
Hi It just goes yo show start with the basics and you don't go wrong. It makes you wander why the dealership fitted a new ecu. I have in 40+ years never seen a broken slide but loads of badly worn ones Keep up the good work
Great Vid as always Jim! Can you recommend a compression tester where the spark plug end doesn't just spin freely. The internet is full of folks who can't get the hose out. I've taped mine but still nervous. A solid one would ease my mind. Thanks for any help. Keep up the Wafflage!
Jim you always prove your value ... hopefully you've provided enough evidence that the owner can claim a refund for that 1000 quid spent on an unnecessary ECU replacement. If they had just come straight to you they'd probably have saved themselves a good coupla-hundy. While a LOT often goes over my head, I love that you keep explaining the basic principals ... fuel, spark, compression, .... slowly but surely even I'm starting to learn! 🤣🤣Keep up the good work, mate.
Great demonstration of tracing the fault. I'm currently working on a similar V MAX and it sounds the same at idle, but seems to run all right. They do have very lumpy cams...
Main dealers are all about making money and hitting targets. Your much better going to an honest independent mechanic. This guy knows what he is doing so you will be fine. Plus it's my first time watching this channel and I have just subscribed to the channel. I love watching these kind of videos and hopefully one day I'll have enough knowledge to have a go at it myself on my own bike. However slow and steady wins the race 😊
A weird mistake I made some years ago was with a Yamaha 1600 v twin. Pulled into garage and filled up! When I pulled away it started misfiring. Got home and checked everything, ignition, carbs the lot. It turned out the oil pump drive had sheared and the hydraulic rappers had no oil to them.
Another great vlog & "How too" diag a misfire. Agreed it's defo a carb issue, you follow the same methodical diagnostic path as I do. I also agree Ultra-sonic cleaning is not the be all & end all of carb cleaning, it's just one process to use if required & I appreciate you won't share the carb cleaning solvent you use, but I've had awesome results with HOLTS EGR CLEANER, dissolves external & internal corrosion. Look forward to the next vlog.
I’ve had reasonable success (50%)draining the carbs ,pulling the diaphragms and hitting the pilot air drilling inside with a focused blast of compressed air. Then refilling and draining the carbs. Bit of a bodge but saves A LOT of time and aggro with yam V4s.
Sadly says it all …it’s not just main dealers but many so called techs these days are just fitters , if they can’t cure it by fitting new parts they are scratching their heads . To us old school techs this is basic diagnostic fault finding , a process of elimination. I worked in the marine /outboard industry as a independent and would often get engines after a customer had spent thousands at a dealer and still had faults , I don’t get that because A I would never charge a penny in parts or labour if I couldn’t fix a problem , it’s unethical and I think should be illegal , the customer pays for your knowledge not for u to throw parts at the problem. Any idiot can do that !
Great video Jim! May I ask what chemical your using to soak the carbs in pre Ultrasonic bath please? Add: now seen previous carb video where questions have been asked. 😉😉
Some dealers if you can't plug in your diagnostic machine then they have no idea 💡,, proper old school are thin on the ground 😞,,so buy from the local one to keep it open,,☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️ from northern Ireland
Avoid dealers, They are clueless for sure. My brand new yamaha tenere 1200 was overfilled by 2 liters of oil. On its 500 service. Genuine Yamaha dealer in Kent. Engine has two drains plugs. Only one used.. Complete clowns and morons. No excuse for the hourly rate charged. Just don't trust any of them.
That's exactly why I've never taken a vehicle to a garage for service or repair in all my years, I started to learn myself back in the 80's. Thankfully I've always been interested in how things work, don't mind buying tools and equipment, it's kind of my hobby.
@@SuperbikeSurgeryTV oddly enough I've seen very similar issue with a virargo 250 that came into my workshop about ten years ago, rubbers crushed in the carbs and damage to the sliders, it had been to a different shop which had given up. Didn't say much about the other shop. I did the job with the owner watching, don't normally but I liked the bloke and he wanted to learn. So I basically charged him a lower rate and went through the job step by step teaching him at the same time. I enjoyed it but would only do that for a very select few as you know that concentration is key and you don't want to screw it up. Worst carbs I ever dealt with were on my old XZ550, they were downdraft and known to be an issue.
@@SuperbikeSurgeryTV lower rate, longer job worked out the same in the end. I believe an owner that can at least do the basics is a better customer than one that has zero idea, the zero idea types tend to Google it and say that famous " I watched it, doesn't take long". Then they wonder why you have a five hour labour bill due to all the rust nuts, bolts, gasket removal and testing. I expect you've had your moments with a few. Only ever sent one bloke away which wasn't bad tbh.
New subscriber here. Interesting video, thanks for sharing. It's hard to find a shop mechanic that will work on old bikes, they need a diagnostic scanner to tell them what the problem is.
Sunk in in the tons of great videos… Thx for that. Have to look for som crappy bikes now after this video!😂 No, just kidding, but… I am really enjoying watching your videos, Jim. Just subscribed. You got me with that!
So bike dealers are becoming like car dealers . Haven't a clue as computer won't tell the mech the fault . So long are the days gone were engineers mechs and elecs used to do the correct job like you are . Hats off to your spider sensor
@13:00 you mention finding a good ground. Would it not be better to connect to the thread in the spark plug hole to also rule out a ground issue? ie an spare/old plug with the electrode shorted to the housing.
pretty sure if the name of the dealership was made known they would pay more attention in the future - so tired of them trying to rip ppl off every time
I lost my licence on one of those Charge battery , current draw into starter ,, earths coils and clean carbs haha haha ( ps I also have had bike with a "spark" but the plug was the problem ,,new plugs good call!)
With the state of them carbs , would you flush the fuel tank aswel ?, I get alof yam parts from KEDO Germany, they've been one of the cheapest places for carb parts for my tt600r belgarda which uses a similar vacuum carb, the dealer by looks of it hasn't done a proper investigation with the state if the carb rubbers !

The technician probably couldn't find any injectors, so just replaced the ECU 😂😂😂.
So glad i'm retired now but still love my carby bikes.

silly ? more a shilling issue

"silent compressor" 🤣🤣. Me too...
I'm not a mechanic and thought carbs straight away, No way would I of paid A grand ,would of told them to put the old ECU back on and left
Get yourself a cheap infrared heat gun they are great for finding a dead cylinder cheers.
They don’t work very well on chrome headers as the mirror effect confuses the reading. Works well on Matt exhausts.

great video.
Hi Jim, great video as always. May I ask which product you use for cleaning the carb, by soaking them? Thanks

if i didnt have a plug what i used to do was swap plugs around see if fault moves.

No the posh way to test for spark is finger in the plug lead how high you jump means it’s ok🙈🙈

could have just stayed some fuel in the dead cylenders as it's running would tell u if it's no compression or spark
excellent by the way👍
