I think the people in these comments misunderstand LR's business model. They're an exclusive, status oriented company. They compete with companies like bentley, mercedes, audi, and so on. It's not meant to be a "value proposition" because the people who purchase these vehicles have the money to not worry about the value of a vehicle. My family owns a range rover and we love it, we've had no issues and it's a lovely car to drive.
Great review, succinct, articulate and no gimmicks. Gives me the information I need in an intelligent way. I’ve subscribed. Picking up my new RRS in a couple of weeks. We’ve had three LR products in the past and the only time they’ve been in the shop has been for annual servicing. Having said that, the five year warranty now gives me some additional peace of mind.
I'm sure with the Covid-19 pandemic sweeping across our country, American lawmakers will surely re-focus their attention on your mandatory amber turn signals petition.
I’ve owned Range Rovers in the UK 🇬🇧 & New Zealand 🇳🇿 and never had any issues. Serviced regularly and use premium fuels, you won’t get any issues. More reliable than my Mercedes, BMWs, Volvos and Audis.
Got an X5 40i with almost every option available, including the Off Road pack. I got the pack mostly because it had air suspension and the M sport differential. Have taken it mildly off the road on some trails and gravel, but Pirelli P-Zero tires prohibit anything more. It's gotta be the best value here. For 86K and great lease rates, it's the fastest competitor, with handling better than a comparably priced Porsche Cayenne. Not sure why anyone would get any competitor. Plus, the Q8 has horrific engine lag (check the forums). Looked at the GLE, but it has hard plastics all across the lower areas, the ride is too floaty, and a lot of glare on the tach screen because it's exposed. The Cayenne gets way too expensive on the S variants with all the options (over 100K to match my X5). Too many fingerprints on the Q8 center stack piano black. The XC90 4 cylinder at 70K plus is a non-starter. The Range Rover reliability issues coupled with lack of any discounts and horrendous lease programs also killed that avenue. So, X5 it was.
I'm going to go out on a limb and assume most people I'm the comments complaining about reliability have never owned, and aren't looking to own, a Range Rover. I had a 2016 RRSC and currently drive a 2020 Sport Autobiography P525... no significant issues from either.
In the UK we also have a high power 3.0L diesel variant available with 306hp 516ft lb and improved economy, i often get 45mpg from mine. 0-60mph is 6.2s which is fine, the high-power diesel is from the Ingenium range of engines. we also get a full size spare wheel, the same as fitted to the car.
Pauline Weinberger yeah! First owner is a lease. The second owner will be a “certified pre-owner” then the third owner will get it after the dealer dumps it at auction and some shady dealer on the street corner picks it up and sells it someone who wants that Range Rover lifestyle but lives in an apartment complex in the worse part of town and in 2 months the rear air suspension will fail and then you’ll see it riding leaning back. Then the electric supercharger will fail and you’ll see it in the Walmart parking lot with a for sale sign.
Lavonte A Well... yes and no. Their used cars sell for so much less that they’re not a bad value as 5 year old used cars, if you budget for massive repairs. They are especially good of you can get an extended full warranty with them.
The weird thing is JLR is the only auto manufacturer that offers a 10 year bumper to bumper warranty on a 10-15 year old vehicle or older, IF you can show all dealer maintenance records during the vehicles lifetime. A friend of mine has a 1997 Jag XJ6 and he found out about this warranty just last week.
Quality has massively improved in recent years, I won’t be shying away from buying my next one. My XF was very reliable and virtually problem free, my Velar so far has been great.
I have the 2015 ranger rover sport and I haven’t had any issues with. Besides normal maintenance. It’s for people who understand when you take it for service once of year you going to pay a few bucks. But I put my suv up against any brand. This is my third rover. Being buying them since 2006.
If Land Rover/Jaguar could get there act together on reliability, which is the biggest reason a lot of people stay away, imagine how many more Range Rover's and Jaguar vehicles could be sold. IMO Land Rover/Range Rover makes the best SUVs in terms of interior design, exterior design, engine power and offroad capability even though most owners dont offroad their's. If they solve the reliability issue they could make so much more money.
Heard the incline 6 turbos are amazing, I’ve owed 6 rover in the past 10 years, currently driving a 19 LWB SC and 19 Sport dynamic sc v8, I love the 5.0 supercharged, they drive amazing. My fav was my 17 svr with the special svo paint.
I'm so glad you mentioned the RX 350 vs the Range Rover Sport since the RX will always be a very dependable/reliable vehicle (as most Lexus models are) while the Land Rover/Range Rover vehicles are the complete opposite... not dependable and generally very unreliable. You're paying 40k more for this Range Rover than you would for the RX, which is a total waste of money
I did my comparison last year and went with the X5. I highly doubt that I'll take it off road. It's been serving as school bus for my kids and grocery runner. Powerful enough that if I don't engage cruise control, I'll be doing 100 mph not knowing. Comfortable when it drives itself (driving assistant pro). My kids don't fight over climate control. Well, these features are all same in all three vehicle I think. I had 5 series before I bought the X5. I got so used to wireless Apple CarPlay, I put other brands on distant seconds. I also liked the physical buttons on the X5 compare to touch sensitive buttons. When your fingers are cold or dry, touch interface works intermittently. Good luck trying to touch anything with glove on during cold season.
@AoA Waiting for Mazda to also bring their inline 6 with RWD and hopefully with a manual 🤞🏼. That should be a nice modern E46 throwback at more attainable price than full on luxury car
If we’re to buy one of these I would take it off road because that is what it was designed for. The next reason is because it will depreciate so fast that I would care about the it when it gets old. I will have at least enjoyed it while I can. Best to lease this beast, off road it , get full coverage in case it gets trashed then return it once the fun is over.
Has Land River Reliability Got Any better since their acquisition by tata? I Think You Need At Least 5 years to show any change in reliability due to change in ownership of the company.
Alex, I was just wondering why the Porsche Cayenne was not included as part of the mix here. I would think that is also a luxury SUV similar to the others and similar in size. Do you feel that is a different category? We have our second Cayenne and do really like it. Especially after redesigned now in 19. The looks of the Range Rover Sport is what we like about that but keep falling back to Porsche based on the seat comfort and the handling, especially making quicker movements. Looking for another car and just wondering your thoughts. Personally I thought the X5, while I love it, was a minor step down to the Range Rover Sport. We had an X5 and nobody ever said Wow the X5, but I do feel they look at the Porsche and Range Rover as a higher level than the Mercedes and BMW.
If I knew it wouldn’t fall apart, I’d love it. Sadly they’re only “good” for a couple years. Land Rovers are definitely vehicles you should only lease. I pity anyone who buys a Land Rover product, especially a brand new one or a really old one
Good call. I live in Vegas, so I'm surrounded by entitled, Rang Rover drivers who think they're about the law based on their vehicle. Not sure if I pitty them, though..
We drove a new Range Rover and hated the touch screens. The interface was confusing and they can be a safety hazard, particularly the low-mounted screen. Good looks does not equal progress. We ended up with a new X5 which not only drove better, it offers multiple ways to control vehicle functions (iDrive controller, voice, touch screen, and gestures).
This is sort of like the Volvo I-4 engines that use both, superchargers and turbos, but with a mild hybrid application. My worry is the complexity, especially with LR’s reputation of failures with complex engines.
Had to look up "treadplates." [I didn't think this referred to "door sill trim/covers"]. Now, I have seen the phrase " Chelsea Tractor" before--a "reference to the affluent Chelsea neighborhood of London, and means an SUV that is never taken off-road, but instead is used solely for school runs and grocery shopping." [this from the Internet somewhere]
Also Alex, I am confused why you make such a big deal about satellite imagery maps when I can get it on my Android auto in my '18 Elantra... Obviously not in the speedo behind the wheel but still...
So nice in every way. Touch control on the steering wheel is absolutely wondrous. Adore the Red seats and some trims. Unfortunately the res of the black interior spoil everything. This is the kind of car I'd buy purely based on emotion cause nothing in the market could give the kind of interior and exterior feel like this one, knowing very well RRs are never reliable and a killer in maintenance.
well Alex, if you like the on-road dynamic of X5 but prefer the Land Rover lineup of vehicles, you should consider the F-Pace -- on-road capable and still in the JLR family. Off-road test of the F-Pace on youtube channel "SUV Battle" shows it more off-road capable, surprisingly, than X5, GLE or even Discovery Sport.
"All that was old is new again...." My first car was a 1954 Kaiser with an inline 6 that offered a fire-breathing 125 HP. :) I followed it up with a '63 Dodge Dart that got me though college with its famous Slant6. It offered even more scalding performance with 145 HP. 0-60 mph....Well, it got there eventually. I'm not going to be rushing out to get a Range Rover Sport. (Have a kid to send to college.) But I do like SUV's in the RR's size category (192" in length). And I was struck my Alex' comment about the utility of a third row in crossovers of this size. We have a KIA Sorento with a surprisingly accommodating third row for its size (189" in length.) Not suitable for three adults or even for two adults for an extended journey but extremely convenient for occasions when we need to transport more than 5 passengers and would otherwise have to use two vehicles. On the other hand the Sorento offers 3" more legroom and 11" more shoulder room than the RR Sport. And I could buy three Sorentos for the price of the RR Alex drove. :)
In case you don't know Jeep is owned by FCA and they are arguably just as bad in reliability as Range Rover/ Jaguar. Id rather get the Range Rover in terms of engine HP and interior and exterior design.
@@naveenthemachine does the Trackhawk have the same appointments and amenities inside as the Summit? (for some reason I thought the Summit was the most luxury oriented) It's a performance bargain, but dont think it quite matches the RR in terms of luxury and feel inside.
Totally disagree with your comment regarding the 3rd row... most people in the market for a $100k luxury sport SUV are not concerned with carrying that “5th and 6th” passenger.
$70k-$90k shopping would have me looking at a used Porsche Cayenne Turbo S/GLS 63 AMG or a new GLE 53 AMG/Audi SQ8. And yes, I will take my 90K SUV on light to moderate off road trails. No rock climbing though.
I purchased a 2019 sport including the new in line 6. Mechanically the car is fine, unfortunately the software/electronics are the worst of any modern luxury car. Issues include non functional heated seats, lower info screen goes blank, key not found often. Land Rover has no solution. Very disappointed.
Heated front seats, a homelink remote, and 3 zone auto climate aren’t standard on a vehicle that starts at nearly 70 grand. That is a horrible decision by Land Rover. Those are extremely common features that one would expect on any luxury vehicle, especially one that expensive
Houli mouli, i get Rover does great AWD, but this tire wall is negating all off road effort they put into it...for crying out loud ZL1 LE has more rubber profile
What if you lived in Vietnam? Would it be considered an endless "dong" pit, since that's their national currency? I suppose it might be an endless "yen" pit in Japan, an endless "rupee" pit in India, an endless "peso" pit in Mexico, an endless "ruble" pit in Russia. Could it even be an endless "euro" pit in the European Union?
I'd love one to replace a 2001 Yukon. But as a buy and hold type, it just doesn't make sense. Not only will the repairs come, but the cost for the repairs will be high. Add to that the balky electronics, which is unforgivable in a premium brand and after all the time they've had to correct the problem. Too bad, because so much of it is great.
Most of these I see are leased by business professionals or those visiting the country for a limited time. I don't think they care about reliability or cost of fixing it.
@@dragoonTT Once the warranty is gone, and lost enough value, some budget baller will buy it and shocked when they get the repair bill. The garage my buddy works for still have a v10 bimmer 7 on their lot, which the owner simply abandoned after hearing how much it'll cost him to fix.
You could get the smaller SUV with a third row, but you couldn't get a third row in the larger model? A strange decision from JLR in 2020. PS: I'm aware that the new full size Range Rover now gets an optional third row.
$114k for the top of the trim Range Rover... Endless money pit! A vehicle you can only enjoy when you lease. L A fully loaded KIA Telluride got better options and is more reliable, looks better and has the best warranty for half the price of this. Lol
But does it have a supercharged v8? Actually good off road if the owner chooses to take it off pavement? Holds its value? Its a still a Kia and it just doesn't compare.
@@ramonj08 No a Telluride doesn't have a supercharged V8 but yes it holds it's value and has a great warranty which the Range Rover doesn't. You leave but don't own a Range Rover because cost of ownership isn't worth the very few miles of actual driving. Lol
You're really paying for the name more than anything. If I had the money to buy a luxury SUV, I'd definitely choose the Genesis GV80 over this. The Kia Hyundai warranty and reliability can't be beat
When you look at a BMW X5; naaaaa! Range Rover Sports all day! There is something else that makes you buy RRS. I don’t even like the BMW dash. If you want to race, buy something else. Too many cabs are Mercedes! Naa! RRS all day!
Awesome review! If I had to purchase in this segment my first choice would be the Audi and then maybe the Mercedes. I always loved the Land Rovers and Jaguars but they have not been very reliable, I would only lease those! lol :-)
You can buy a GLE X5 or Q8 and have the "newest model" for ~6 more years. Range Rover's current model is already 7 years old and probably in it's last year of production.
At this price point: Enjoy driving - Cayenne. Want the most hp per dollar at the expense of refinement - BMW. Instagram/TH-cam influencer with no car knowledge who loves badges and catastrophic depreciation - JLR and Mercedes.
My new 2020 RR PHEV had engine light still turned on after 3 times back to dealer service with changing parts. Now in service 4th time and they said that all this model cars in the world will be recalled for new hybride software that will be ready at the end of September 2020. 3 months after buying a new very expensive car, still stuck to service. Dealer said that JLR refused replacement or refund. I can not even reach the customer service despite my multiple attempts. UNRELIABLE CAR! HORRIBLE SERVICE!!!
Mgoblagulkablong I think the interior in this model is supposed to be a notch above with materials, and exterior a notch bigger. Value isn't a factor 🤣
NOT! Loud and obnoxious supercharged V8's are all the rage. Like an idiot I traded a V8 Rover Sport for one of these weak and soul-less 6 cylinder Rover Sports. I had it for 2 months and I cried every time a drove it 😯😠😬😡😢😣😩😳😵😝😔😫😪😴. I traded it for a Supercharged V8 Sport. Alan Bowers well don’t forget the most expensive grand Cherokee caps at 100K. But it’s way faster 0-60.
Tjk 92 well horsepower wise in most trims the Range Rover is higher. But once you climb into the trackhawk model the Jeep outdoes it by a mile
@@naveenthemachine does the Trackhawk have the same appointments and amenities inside as the Summit? (for some reason I thought the Summit was the most luxury oriented) It's a performance bargain, but dont think it quite matches the RR in terms of luxury and feel inside.
Could you consider one of the new Lincolns???Thanks for your thorough reviews as always!
Looks like your overlaid graphics show the wrong torque specs (461) instead of the 406lb-ft it is.
All wheel drive or 4 wheel drive?
Isn’t that silky smooth engine a BMW one? :D
Nothing but trouble
If I had that kind of money to spend on a luxury suv, I'd wait to test drive a GV-80
It's a station wagon. At least it is not ugly like some of the competition.
Off-roading ? Not with those tires.
You missed Cayenne.
autobiography for homelink garage opener? i would buy anything else in that price range on principle alone.
Save your money and buy a Stanley garage door opener at Home Depot for 20dollars
Very nice.
Leo, are you gonna buy one?
Ghen Khoash My wife says I can’t have one. 🥴🥴. She is the boss of me. She says I have enough vehicles. She is mean. 😱
It will be a nightmare to fix it once broken
I purchased a 2019 sport including the new in line 6. Mechanically the car is fine, unfortunately the software/electronics are the worst of any modern luxury car. Issues include non functional heated seats, lower info screen goes blank, key not found often. Land Rover has no solution. Very disappointed.
Heated front seats, a homelink remote, and 3 zone auto climate aren’t standard on a vehicle that starts at nearly 70 grand. That is a horrible decision by Land Rover. Those are extremely common features that one would expect on any luxury vehicle, especially one that expensive
Tyrel Tolliver nah. Sonata is hideous up front with that grille.
My favorite midsize sedans in looks are the Camry XSE and the Mazda6.
Thirsty beast! Even with a diesel engine, or hybrid! The British are left behind.
It's an Indian product, not British. Britain stopped making vehicles in the mass market decades ago as we were hopelessly crap at it 😂
At the first glance I thought it was the new Explorer. Ford loves to copy Land Rover.
Houli mouli, i get Rover does great AWD, but this tire wall is negating all off road effort they put into it...for crying out loud ZL1 LE has more rubber profile
Wife wants a Sport, I want an M50i. What to do?
cry
Endless money (dollar or pounds) pit.,
What if you lived in Vietnam?
I can see my automotive mechanic buddy pulling his hair out when one of these rolling into the shop.
Is that your fictional auto mechanic buddy for the purposes of the AoA comments section?
Why? Mechanics LOVE JLR owners!
@@JulezWinnfield No he works for a 2nd gen family owned Italian garage, and I get earful of how awful some cars are every time we ski together.
I like the car but as reliability stand point would choose BMW X5 over this and looks better ( generic ) than this LR Sport.
HOW ABOUT A TWIN SCROLL ELECTRIC TURBO/SUPERCHARGER?
You could get the smaller SUV with a third row, but you couldn't get a third row in the larger model? A strange decision from JLR in 2020. PS: I'm aware that the new full size Range Rover now gets an optional third row.
$114k for the top of the trim Range Rover... Endless money pit! A vehicle you can only enjoy when you lease. L
A fully loaded KIA Telluride got better options and is more reliable, looks better and has the best warranty for half the price of this. Lol
But does it have a supercharged v8? Actually good off road if the owner chooses to take it off pavement? Holds its value? Its a still a Kia and it just doesn't compare.
@@ramonj08 of course, that is why you lease a car like a range rover :)
The Kia Hyundai warranty and reliability can't be beat
the diesel engine is similar to that in the ford and rules all
When you look at a BMW X5; naaaaa!
I always loved the Land Rovers and Jaguars but they have not been very reliable, I would only lease those! lol :-)
Volvo looks demm cheap in front of range rover and BMW
You can buy a GLE X5 or Q8 and have the "newest model" for ~6 more years. Range Rover's current model is already 7 years old and probably in it's last year of production.
its a shame v8 engines will no longer be made the end of the petrol head
At this price point: Enjoy driving - Cayenne. Want the most hp per dollar at the expense of refinement - BMW. Instagram/TH-cam influencer with no car knowledge who loves badges and catastrophic depreciation - JLR and Mercedes.
Cayenne sucks its one of the most un reliable turds they have ever seen.
Unreliable and off road are a terrible combination.
Any Black Label Lincoln Aviator. Great SUV, same features. Save lots of money!!
This model makes no sense, why does this still exist now that the much better Velar is available?
Mgoblagulkablong I think the interior in this model is supposed to be a notch above with materials, and exterior a notch bigger. Value isn't a factor 🤣
4runner u better up ur fuken game
Go back to showing all engine options and power economy etc
Now I'm laughing, giggling and smiling every time I hear it roar when I step on the gas pedal 😄😃😂😁😀😊☺😅😆😉. Six cylinder Rovers are for grannies, girls and girly-men.
Good decision
