As the partner of an avid sailor and a data scientist, I'm so appreciative of your detailed (and replicated) testing system. These videos are great! Thanks so much for the work you put into these!
Wow. Thanks man. We typically haul a massive Danforth, with 200lbs of chain, on our 50ft(diesel powered) Nautaline, but snagged and retrieved a large Manson yesterday. I’m now going to take the Manson home, to modify it similarly. My back may soon want to say thanks, as well.
Binged all these videos tonight after an anchor drag and not being able to picture why it had dragged. Now I get it and see why it happened. Love seeing the gopro video of the anchors in action with fail tests, and reasons for designs and ideas. Very interesting series of videos. Kind of sad all the Kardashian clones doing goofy videos get hundreds of thousands of viewers, while videos with real info (yours and many solid TH-cam boating education videos) get only a few thousand views. But hats off to all the your seal with all the experiements, the testing and trials. Nice job, these were helpful.

Thanks for putting in the effort to change & test this anchor. I have just bought one & will probably make the same mods as the sea bed were I anchor is about the same. The slot in the top is a bit useless, messes up the bottom hole for using a swivel as it does not allow it to pull upwards.
Thank you so much, for your work..videos helped to understand what my problem..is. I had the same problem with my Rocna 15kg (33lb) almost lost my boat. Sets well only first time and if the wind changes you have no anchor!
Nice experimenting! I think this shows why -- as you said in one of your other videos - that knock-off anchors are questionable. First, small changes can make quite a difference. And second changes that seem like they would be obvious improvement aren't always so good.
Very interesting! Thank you for this! Last video I saw showed you choosing the Spade. Did you switch to this because you became unhappy with the Spade for some reason I missed, or were these tests just for fun? I, too, am curious: do you think this might solve the Rocna as well? Also, is polished stainless steel good for shedding mud? Want to test am SS vs galvanised anchor of the same design?
I have been using a Manson Supreme for many years and seeing your test with the reverse pull spooked me! I'll be doing my own tests of this to see if my anchor is not resetting. I do know that there are times when the fluke comes up with mud on it. Have you had any more experience with this modification of the Manson Supreme? What was your reference for why the holes might help with keeping the flukes from clogging. The only reference I found was Rex Francis in a video mentioning that the holes help the mud come off while the anchor was being raised. Thanks!
Yes Interesting, For those worrying about the anchor being lighter then you could use a bigger anchor which would have a larger holding area. Also I always wonder when you drop it you back up and it sets but when you change your going faster and it spins around so fast that it doesn't have time to reset. have you tried going slower and see if it does the same ? I think on one of your video's you did do that. I can't see any way those holes would weaken it for holding a boat.
Very interesting. Did you try putting a heavy swivel on the connection between the chain and the anchor? It should change the balance enough to cause the anchor to bite better on the re-try. -johnny
I have not used a swivel on an anchor. It is hard to imagine that a 105 foot length of chain could transmit a detectable amount or rotational force from one and to the other without first winding the chain many, many wraps. But I have been wrong before..........
I am really curious to know if putting holes in a Rocna would help it in these tests as well since it seemed to set perfectly on the initial set but had problems with the reset due to mud\fouling.
I think I will put holes in my Manson as well. Is there any science to the location of the holes, or was it just where they fit? Thank you for everything by the way. I have both 25 foot steel "Julia" designs (Julia and Hobo) that Tom Colvin built and I hope to get them cleaned up and in the water soon. Panope is a lovely cousin.
Really great video , lots of patience , and great skills . My question would be , is it really necessary to try the reset with 3-3,5 knots ? In most cases my boat turns much slower around when on anchor , the reset ratio may be much higher at lower speed . Best to You from Hungary .
Thanks, Pesti Z. I agree, the high speeds would be a very rare (but not unheard of) occurrence during normal anchoring. At low reset speeds, the anchor is likely (but not guaranteed) to remain engaged and re-set without problem. I use the high speed to amplify the failure frequency so as to not have to make as many tests.
Really appreciate you sharing your experience...amazing...do you know if anyone has modified a CQR by welding the hinge so it is static? ...and what the results might be?...we now have a skookum53 that came with two CQR's . i am looking to make a change before heading to AK this summer...thx again
Would you consider proofing this experiment at some point by going ABAB. Eg blocking the holes you drilled in the same way you did on Super Sarca with tape then re-testing and then removing and re-testing again?
HI Steve, i'm in NZ looking to purchase an anchor for a 47" boat. I'm reluctant to go with a convex anchor, as had so may problems with our CQR. SPADEs are not easily available here possible due to cost or the incident in 2004 where a boat was lost and the Maritime body ruled the design of the anchor was at fault. Suggestions? Presently looking at a second hand Rocna and wondering if I should repeat your test and drill holes in the fluke?
Hey Steve, maybe I missed it but what drove you to do all these modifications in the first place? Were you not totally happy with the original Manson Supreme? If so, that would imply that the original MS is not in par with the Mantus and Rocna?
watch the other tests and comparisons the manson supreme has major trouble resetting after direction reversal at around 3 knots it's a specific scenario it fails at.

Love it. So cool that your messing around with anchors this much. Your one in a million. -Chad

Pam cooking spray on the flukes. Any anchor.

I have a 20kg Mason supreme on my 13ton launch, never missed a set yet, and now I sleep all night!
outstanding video and anchor work.

Great video
i believe the upturned point makes it act like a ski at speed, possibly a downturned point would help resetting capability.
Very Interesting! Thank you

As second thought. Maybe if you paint with some short of non sticking paint?
Grafitti paint.
Thank you Paul, hmm..maybe in conbination with the holes

Bit late for the reply, But I did weld the hinge of one & put a hoop on the back. It worked much better.
Even later the car without the hinge is a delta.
Tilt the point down and make it more like a cow horn so you avoid a wing effect. This is me just guessing...
So the holes reduce the suction of the mud on the anchor and the mud falls off. tjl

Would you recomend using this idea on a mantus?
My experience testing the Mantus anchor shows that it does not have a re-setting problem
Seem like a rocna combined wit a rocna for power boat version which was an original design
Manson is a copy of rocna
Rocna is the best.
