Libs at the time (like me) made fun of Bush because he had no 'exit strategy', but that was always the point.

I like the fact, that in Germany government officials are not allowed to call the Afghan war a war, because they fear, they then could get sued. Or they had the ISAF mandate and the US mandate. Often German soldiers in Afghanistan were mixed up in operations of both. I know a guy, who quit, because he was afraid, he could be sued for being part of US operations and could not understand why his superiors so willingly broke German laws. For Germans, who know some about foreign politics the US troops in Germany look more and more like imperial troops and they expand their bases. They seem to prepare for something and NATO expands closer and closer to Russia... The Russians and French are gone. But the British and US stayed. While local politicians can trick most people with the wrong argument "US troops secure German jobs" with their installations worth many billions of Dollars, when it comes to US nukes like 80 % of Germans do not want them to be in Germany and do not want Germany to be a nuclear battlefield. There is an old slogan "better red than dead". But oddly nobody of the transatlantic elite in Germany, which is in power there, listens. And again, doing work for US troops, providing them services for their illegal wars according to international laws, technically makes Germany also a war party in all these wars. But in The Hague only African war criminals get convicted. A certain Major Klein, who let US bombers kill like 150 civilians in Afghanistan, got later on General and in German trials the judges could not see him done anything wrong. Oh and the KSK, our German special forces has a massive problem with Nazis and the acronym of the intelligence group, who should stop any recruits, who do not respect the German constitution is .. MAD.

The "Iliad" translation is by Stanley Lombardo, and is one a several good translations he did for the publisher, Hackett.
I was intrigued by the cover, as were my students,
And, "Iliad" is not about war. It's about the rage of Achilles, and an argument can be made that it is anti-war.
I saw the cover as a comment that we're still waging war, thousands of years later.

I’m glad someone brought up how ridiculous the comparisons of Trump to Caesar are. Caesar also passed legitimate reforms that redistributed the land and wealth from the Patricians to the Plebs.

I keep trying to come up with a comparison between Trump and famous Roman figures but I always come up empty, because all of them enacted some kind of reform or did SOMETHING useful

In what way is trump not a perfect 1-for-1 modern Caesar? He has no military expertise at all, he has no political strategy beyond the room he's currently standing in, it's all so perfect.
That is what America creates, why would our Caesar not reflect us? Our crossing of the Rubicon will likely just be people collectively breaking their brains in the internet and not a physical event (which is also perfect for our hollowed out digital age).

Diamonds? Pleez. Nothing says forever like a war of attrition. And while you have that fleeting image of Holy Matrimony in your head; marriage, like war, is delightful to get into and hellish to get out of. Let's take a moment to remember Vonnegut's description of our presence in Vietnam. "During the Vietnam War, every respectable artist in this country was against the war. It was like a laser beam. We were all aimed in the same direction. The power of this weapon turns out to be that of a custard pie dropped from a stepladder six feet high.”

The edition of the Iliad with the US troops on the cover is Stanley Lombardo's translation btw. He is known for translating the text in a modernized colloquial way. I believe his translation of the Odyssey has a picture of the moon landing on it.
