GRENFELL TOWER FIREFIGHTER | Former Firefighter Ricky Nuttall

- In this episode of The Debrief, former 22 SAS Trooper Big Phil Campion speaks to Ricky Nuttall.
Enduring a scattered & abusive childhood at the hands of his step-father, Ricky was torn between joining the Royal Marines or the fire service, choosing the latter due to a poor fitness test performance at Lympstone. In 2017, Ricky, his watch, and 19 other crews, were called to the Grenfell Tower fire. Entering the burning high-rise multiple times that evening, Ricky went over & above his call of duty to aid the rescue of the residents of the towerblock. Now sharing his story of recovery from substance abuse, PTSD & depression, and his time on Channel 4's SAS Who Dares, Ricky is working alongside multiple organisations to improve mental health support for emergency service personnel, and helping to reform prisoners through sport.

Really liked this. As someone who has been there with PTSD, depression and alcohol issues, I resonated with so much of this, the dark room, the suicidal thoughts( albeit something I still have, but for me weirdly is a coping mechanism, knowing that option is there bur that it's not worth it), I really connected and am thankful each day for everything, just for the chance to live another day.
Thank you for sharing your story. It takes a lot of courage to open up about such personal experiences, and I'm glad there video resonated with you. Remember, every day is a new opportunity to find light in the darkness.🙏🏻
These podcasts are always great, but this one was exceptional. To understand first hand what went down on that day, from someone who was there, makes it all the more terrifying. Ricky and the others that went into Grenfell on that day are all heroes. Thank you for everything you did and I’m sorry for the personal pain and turmoil you had to endure after it
Thank you so much for watching
What a hero! Great respect for our great fire brigade.
Thanks for watching!
I can absolutely relate to Rick. Spent 16 years as a retained FF with Leicestershire. I have rescued a cat out of a tree. And I have also given oxygen therapy to a dog who survived. Our bread and butter was Road traffic collisions. We had the A1 A46 on our patch. Some absolute pearlers on there. Stay strong Rick 😊
As a Leicestershire lad (Ratby) all I can say is thank you for keeping us safe mate. Hope you're enjoying a more peaceful life nowadays, definitely earned it.
The LFB minimum starting pressure for a Standard Duration Breathing Apparatus is 240 bar and the Low Pressure Warning Whistle (LPWW) is set to 84 bar which will give the firefighter approx 12 mins to get to safety (at normal breathing rate - never mind under exertion). 41x Firefighters operated beyond the LPWW at Grenfell... Forty-One! One Firefighter got as low as 2.86 bar - i.e. he had approx 24 SECONDS of air left. Another firefighter got into distress whilst rescuing a family from the 12th Floor. Fortunately, he was discovered by another crew who helped him to safety. Finally, at least 20x firefighters are recorded as going into the fire 2 or more times despite knowing the danger to their own lives (some BA entries didn't have a name recorded so this number could be higher). What LFB firefighters did on that night was nothing short of heroic! May the 72 people who died rest in peace.
Thanks so much for watching!
Well said
We run away from fire, these guys run towards and into it! Brave brave people!!
Thanks for watching!
As ex British army, and a current serving firefighter of 23 years (Netherlands) this hits home on so many levels. Thankyou for sharing your story/experiences.
Thanks for watching
"if we're all busy fighting ourselves no one is watching what's going on round the corner" RIGHT ON THE MONEY Sir.
A gentlemans discussion. People like yourself change lives. Incredible stuff.
Thanks for the support!
@@ForceMediaHQ was good to hear about PTSD in the emergency services so under reported, keep it up. PTSD in the ambulance service is very under reported which would be an idea for your next show
been working my way through videos on this great channel but this one interview really hit me hard, what an amazing guy!
Thank you for your support
These are the people we need in governance.
Selfless with integrity to help others for no gain.
That was brilliant
😎👊🙏🫡
Thanks for watching!
Brave man thank you for everything you have done to keep people safe absolute hero
Big Phil, found out about your podcast not so long ago and i cant stop watching them! Amazing podcast, what a rollercoaster of emotions.. absolutely brilliant mate 👏👏👏

Absolutely superb podcast and a very humble hero. One of the best podcast channels going, and the variety of people is superb. Hats off to you and your team Phil 🙏
Much appreciated! Thank you so much! ⚔️
Phil this was an amazing session on the podcast. Ricky was a great guest with good crack and his experiences deserved to be shared. Your podcasts really help people to gain understanding which as someone with cptsd in a professional job I appreciate.
Thank you for watching!
The cat in the tree bit, set off a memory. 1976, when the firies went on strike and our servicemen filled in. I think it was Oldham and they got a shout for an old lady’s cat stuck up a tree; they weren’t busy, so responded. They duly rescued the mog and the grateful lady gave them tea and bickies. Unfortunately, when they drove off………… 🤣😂.
Best one yet Phil.
What a top bloke Ricky is.
All the best to both of you with your ventures. ❤💪
Thanks for watching!
Prior to going into the Army, I joined my village's volunteer fire dept. as a cadet at age 14. I can tell you when you're crawling on your hands & knees with SCBA on your back, dragging a hose with you, depending on the fire a lot of times you can't see your hand in front of your face, let alone someone's race/skin color. You literally feel your way around typically along the walls as you sweep an area. I stayed up all night watching coverage of Grenfell from here in the states. This guy and his buddies are heroes.
Thank you for sharing!
Phil loved it. Great interview and what a top guy. Immense bravery in the tower and in his life since. Wish him the very best for his future
Thanks for your support!
Excellent show Phil makes my week thanks mate 👌🏼👍🏼👊🏼
Thanks for watching!
I look forward to these Debrief videos Phil, you bring the best out the people you interview.
Thanks for watching!
Two solid blokes! Great rapport between them
Thanks for watching
Ive been watching this channel since its beginning.
The content is excellent.
Thank you so much for your support!
What a great hero, such a shame about the PTSD, which is a natural reaction to un-natural circumstances. So glad you got the help you needed. Therapy is the verbal equivalent of surgery. Going up to the 15th floor is not backing down..
Thanks for watching!
Halfway through and this is mega deep. Truly insightful podcast.
Thank you for watching!
One the best podcasts to date Phil. Mega. What a decent bloke Ricky is. Keep doing what you do.
Ricky is doing great work and is an inspiration to so many, thanks for your support ⚔️

Thank you so much for your support!
From an ex Young Firefighter Association cadet, massive respect. I ventured to the dark side, but only because i wore glasses, so i couldn't get in. Please make sure you get the right support if not already done so 🎖
Thanks for watching!
1 of the strangest thing is handling trauma but there's almost a sweet spot between keeping stuff to yourself and letting enough out to feel like loved ones won't pull away but keep yaself sane. Constantly trying to stay there and feel like your always in the room
Thanks for watching
Massive respect for firefighters.
Just heard that Channel 4 are going to rename the next 'SAS: Who Dares Wins' to 'Ricky goes to Greenland' 😇
Lol
Legend
Thanks for listening 😁
Top man.
He certainly is!
Well that's me humbled, never again will 8 moan about my shopping bag splitting or knocking drinks over all day after this guy described his job!!!😂 I'd fall over trying to lift anything over 30kg , never mind carry almost 70kg worth of kit up 10 or more flights of stairs. THANK YOU FIRE FIGHTERS! I hugely appreciate your service 🙏👏🕊️🥰
Thanks for watching!
Wow.
Thanks for watching!
Hero launches birds 😂😂😂
We still laugh at this whenever it gets brought up 🤣
WHOLE-E-SHIT Mr Campion, thank you and your guest.
Glad you enjoyed it! New episode coming soon
No body gonna talk about the way he perfectly switched to road man about 12 mins in 😂😂
👍
Thanks for watching!
Great story but interviewer needs to learn to stfu and let the guest talk, all this yeah yeah yeah is amateur and constantly interrupting.
