What a cool project. I also have KSR-43 and I have some question. So your only TX/RX/GND pins on 25 RS232C connector. I'm not clear how your additional switch set the device to DATA Ready, can please explain as I have no idea how to make this work. On my Model 43 the DATA light is flashing but I stuck at this point. Thank you.

There are other signals on RS232 that are used for handshaking that it's expecting. What I did is install a switch in the front that connects DTR to DSR and DCD, and RTS to CTS. I did this by soldering to the back of the serial port PCB. If you're doing a similar mod to mine, be sure to use a 5v FTDI chip, the 3.3v ones don't produce enough signaling voltage.
More info here under "minimal null modem": bogpeople.com/networking/SerialComms/rs232pinouts.shtml . Please contact me for any more info, I'm happy to help!

@@MiaKiesman Thanks. I was using a cheap 25 Female to 9 pin Male RS232 adaptor and it maybe the problem. I'm going to grab a 25 pin female connector tomorrow and hopefully this will resolve my problem. So DTR to DSR, RTS to CTS and also do a local loop with TX connected direct to RX before connecting the TX/RX to my 5V FTDI2323 board.

Can you explain how you went about creating a new ribbon for it please?

It came with the original cartridge, but it had no ribbon, without it I'm not sure I could've done it. I got the ribbon from a place called Fine Line Ribbon and asked for a 19.25 inch loop of 1/4” Nylon ribbon with no twist

Thanks for that information. I am interested in the two rollers inside the cartridge as I think I read somewhere that these are the self inking mechanism. Your rollers look different to mine so I wondered if you had changed them - and whether they are indeed inking the ribbon? Is your replacement ribbon lasting a reasonable length of time? Sorry for all the questions, I am trying to decide what to do with mine.

@@mfhws On my 43 the ribbon loop is 39 1/2” and the cartridge doesn’t have a metal plate that the magnet is supposed to hold down the cartridge, the cartridge has a plastic latch that sticks up to grab the cartridge holder.

Where did you get the ribbon for it? I have a Teletype 43, but do not have ribbon. Thanks!
