  • Hey, admit: You'd own a P-51 Mustang if you could. In this AVweb video shot at Sun 'n Fun, P-51 owner Louis Horschel explains what's involved in P-51 ownership. If you think it involves money, you're right.

    I like the way he understands that all that money he has paid and continues to fork out every month, is only the rent money and his title as "Caretaker" is only temporary. You come into the world with nothing and you leave with nothing. You come in alone, you go out alone. Everything in between is on loan.

    My dad and oldest brother put together a model Mustang that sat on a pedestal and had electric parts. The plane was clear plastic so you could see the parts inside it. I was only about 5 years old in the late 50s ( my timeline might be off several years), but I could always identify a picture of the Mustang after that. I also remember dad building planes with a balsa frames he cut out of pre-marked wood and covered them in what looked like tissue paper. I can still remember the smell of the glue/adhesive. Cool video.

    3 planes I believe ruled the skies during WW2 were the P-51 Mustang, the Lancaster bomber, and the Corsair. The P-51 for it's speed and accuracy while escorting bombers over Germany. The Corsair while engaging the Japanese in aerial combat in the Phillipines.

    Always a thing of beauty. With today's technology why can't they "recreate" these - with modering underpinnings (controls, avionics, engine, interior), thinking if they put different sheet metal over Cessna Caravan, PC12, Piper M600 or similar. Carve out 2-4 seats, start with the P51, move on to Spitfire, B17-B24

    If someone gave me a P51 in great shape, I couldn't afford to fly it much. Just the fuel alone would be expensive. Of course I would like to own one, but just for a little while. It's really a single seat gas hog, that may go 400 mph, but like all the rest, at a few thousand feet it looks like you're going about 30 mph, sometime ten. Would still be fun though.

    He say those price ,"So a matter of factly" But of course this is the current cost of these old war birds. And the cost factor of maintaining. it's a wonderful thing but a rich man's toy. if I were rich I would do it with love. I know someone personally who owns a P-51 in Florida . it's a magnificent bird. I'm here in Northeast Philadelphia I used to see Jim Beasley's P-51 stations Northeast Philadelphia Airport though I have not seen a fly overhead recently.

      Yessir. Imagine having 12 cyl Ferrari...and have it take off into the air, with all of that added work load for lift off, as well as multi-directional air resistance. Just under 5 MPG sounds like a deal 👍

    • @hansanderson6607
      @hansanderson6607 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds about right, especially if it has the supercharger on it, which it
      probably does. It's also pretty heavy, with that 12 cylinder engine, which
      I'm sure is all cast iron. If it was an aluminum engine, it would probably
      do much better. Given the performance of the plane, you know that
      it won't be "easy" on fuel.

    I never owned one but I had a good friend who did, he let me fly it if I bought the gas which was a rare event even when it was only about $1 a gallon! As a struggling flight instructor it took me a very long time to earn an hour's worth of 115/145! :D

      By the way, he bought that 51D for $15,000. I am not kidding...this was the very early 1960s. A little after that period I bought a PT-22 for $1500...it was a barn find in Wharton, TX. True story.
