    I’ve always loved the sound of a steam locomotive being stoked then burning the coal afterwards. These 2’10’0’s are sweet and magnificent to look at. If only China would keep them forever.

      At the moment ( January/February 2021 ) I'm pleased to say that these locomotives are still hard at work hauling coal out of the mine. Unfortunately, the covid-19 virus is preventing visits to the location. They could finish working at any time though - we'll see! By the way, they're 2-8-2's not 2-10-0's ...... Andy

    Love the big long extension cord for the shovel. In reality they are so heavy they need a tractor to move them, but it does look kinda cute.

  • @paulnicholson1906

    They are cross compounds. They exhaust externally at the side of the stack rather than into the smoke box maybe that is why they have more noise.

    • @AndyDandanFisherSteam
      @AndyDandanFisherSteam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't believe this is correct, Paul. As far as I know, they are not compounds. Both cylinders work at the same pressure and exhaust is through the smoke box in a conventional manner ........ Andy

    • @paulnicholson1906
      @paulnicholson1906 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      the Chinese engines that are here have cross compounds. If you look at 142 on the BelDel in NJ you can see it. They are interesting in that the cylinder on the low pressure steam side is the same size as the air cylinder is on the low side. Westinghouse compressors are different sizes. I think the Chinese design has fewer parts as a result. Anyway cool video. When I grew up they had steam around Buxton in the UK pulling stone trains and I remember wheel slip was common but the crews didn’t care much about it, I guess they weren’t repairing them....

    • @AndyDandanFisherSteam
      @AndyDandanFisherSteam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@paulnicholson1906 I can find no evidence of either the QJ's (3 in the USA) or the JS's featured in this video being either compounds or, even more unusually, cross-compounds. However, I'll not start an online engineering debate! I'm not an engineer. I also remember the stone trains around Buxton - mainly 8F hauled if I remember correctly. ........ Andy

    Those Chinese compressors make quite a racket!

    • @AndyDandanFisherSteam
      @AndyDandanFisherSteam  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they do, I agree. Compressors of this kind were never a feature of British steam locomotives "in the day". However, they have been retro-fitted to locos working on the UK mainline to operate modern air braked stock. I have to say that even the relatively quiet British ones irritate me on British locos! There's a good example in - th-cam.com/video/IrY_7bF-vVk/w-d-xo.html

    • @Spanderson99
      @Spanderson99 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andy and Dandan Fisher Coming from North America, I have grown to love that compressor sound, however our compressors are nowhere near as noisy as the Chinese ones. They must be more powerful or something. I can see how they'd be annoying on British locos, though.

    • @AndyDandanFisherSteam
      @AndyDandanFisherSteam  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mmmm. British trains were all vacuum braked in steam days - not air braked.

    • @SteamCrane
      @SteamCrane 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm thinking the air pumps on these little engines may be simple, rather than cross compound. Thus they would be exhausting fairly high pressure steam. Also, they would be much quieter if exhausting through a muffler.

    I have seen many videos on Sandaoling and ont thing I can't begin to understand is why the Chinese don't install sandboxes on their locos! I know there is a cost in doing so, but much less than the wasted fuel and water, the wear and tear on the tracks and the wheels and bearings and the additional maintenance!

    • @AndyDandanFisherSteam
      @AndyDandanFisherSteam  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not absolutely certain - sanding gear may well be fitted - I'll try to remember to ask when I'm next there! However, in their defence, you have to understand that these locos and their drivers are operating on temporary track which is rather uneven in places (as it is moved regularly) which doesn't help with traction on an eight coupled loco, and also that these videos were made when the air temperature was around minus ten degrees (centigrade). Trains running early in the morning, particularly, have icy conditions to deal with, which can persist for the whole day sometimes.

      They have a sand box mounted immediately behind the chimney/stack. If you google a static pic of a JS 2-8-2 like this you can see the sand lines, two of them, branching back and down to the drivers.

    They Continuously are spinning the driver wheels. I don't think they have traction sand. I don't see a sand dome on the engine. What a waste and extra wear and tear.

      I think they are fitted with sanding gear but it's probably not working. Plus the shots were filmed at about 20 degrees below freezing and the rails were very icy.
