I'm Brazilian, and raised in a favela in Rio de Janeiro city. How I'd like to say to those musicians that their music had crossed the Atlantic and found my heart!!! I just love Finnish folk music.
Kantele is the perfect instrument for Finns. You hear the wind breezing in the forests when you listen to it; it's delicate and soft but also powerful when needed. I know Tolkien thought of Finns as kind of forest elves, and somehow I now see it with the kantele.
This is why I love youtube youd never see such wonderful instruments or hear such evocative music on mainstream TV that lot are too busy telling us how to live and totally depressing the life out of everyone. Mainstream TV should carry a health warning. Give me this sort of educational entertainment any day of the week. Truly uplifting.
@@ronkopald Finland is where I was born and raised - and yes, there are worse places! Learned to play the kantele while living in Sweden, though (!). Find the Runaway Kantele on Spotify, if you like!
Just happened, I found an incredibly beautiful performance of gusli. When was typed "slavic music" in the search I was shown an unique performance on slavic gusli (helmet-sharped psaltery) by one guslar Kirill Bogomilov. I was incredibly inspired by it's performance and I learned at his youtube that it turns out there is an gusli ancient slavic tradition but gusli was banned in Russia for more than 200 years and was burned at the stake in the middle ages as a magical devilish instrument! Unbelievably!!! I've never heard anything about it before, and now I've found your channel with music on this amazing instrument. Thank you so much for this perfomance!
I also didn't know about this music instrument before. But as I listened to this I started to cry. It was so beautiful. Thanks for sharing this with us!
This music is hauntingly beautiful. I looked for slavic gusli... It actually brought me to tears from the very first sound. However, it sounds so familiar, that now I seriously consider that I used to live in one slavic country in one of my previous lives!
Did an ancestry test.Thought I was a total Anglo - celt from Australia. Know some ancestors from Scotland, Ireland England ,Germany, but low and behold ,Finland!! As well.We certainly got around.
This seemed to be of younger instruments (like from the 18th century onwards). While kantele itself is ancient, of course, in this video the more modern form was presented. Jouhikko would be very medieval, which seemed to be beyond the scope of the video.
I was enraptured by the Kantele and the mandolins, and very much enjoyed the harmonium. Now there's a good exercise routine!
Quite proggy! The 1st part has chord layout and other arrangements to me distantly reminding of those of Keith Emerson. The 2nd example with kantele also fabulous, even irish/celtic hint but proudly Finnish. Mandolin also pretty jolly and a skillful duet.
That guy was banging the shit out of that harmooni! The most beautiful by far was the talonpoikaiskantele in my opinion. Was she playing that with a toothpick?!?!?
She is playing in the ancient manner, called block and strum. You can see paintings of Medieval people or angels playing this type of instrument with a feather for a plectrum.

Hmm... the string instrument (peasant's kantele) is traditional instrument of Latvians (called kokle), even some melodies are similar. Mandolin is also played in Latvia but sounds differently as far as I can say. Just another proof of Latvian undoubtedly Northern heritage.

You've opened up the news for me! The gusli is really beautiful. I love all slavic culture.
The Kantele sounds FABULOUS. Brilliant. Oh so good. Delighted to hear this.

Finnish folk music are sounds such as seems to me early century music.
All the pieces are "inspired by folk music". In fact they are only loosely connected with Finland at all.
That's it I'm buying a Kantele
First instrument and its song reminded me of the old Zelda games :)
