That is the sweetest, saddest little story @8:03 "I understand that daddy's dead, but when is he gonna come home?" I remember the exact moment i realized my daddy was gonna die someday. It was also crushing to have dissolve the fantasy that one day, when i died, i would learn what happened to my missing cat and get to see him again.
I agree it’s a somewhat slow book but I never found it tiresome or boring or dragging, it was definitely oppressive and claustrophobic in a southern gothic kind of way, but I actually remember when I was reading this I would wake up very early in the morning incredibly eager to pick the book back up.
The Little Friend was one of the best readings I did in my life. The whole description and characters were so damn alive. When I first read the passage when Harriet goes after the snakes and pass out in the middle of nowhere it was like I was in another dimesion, so vivid the narrative was. It was definetly one of my best experience in my whole life so far. I did not enjoy "the secret history" because the characters and the atmosphere was not so dense like in the little friend. When I read the Little Friend I could feel the oppressive Mississippi sun, the desolation of Harriet's house etc That thing is alive until today, 10 years after I read it the first time.
I like the atmosphere of The Little Friend a lot, you're definitely right that the Secret History doesn't have that same rich atmosphere, though I love the themes and characters in that book myself, and probably prefer it overall. But this one is definitely underrated.
I loved this video!! Thank you so much for contributing to the Little Friend support group 😆 I agree with everything you said here. I think it might be Tartt’s most subversive, brave, daring novel, of course it’s extremely different to her other two novels, The Goldfinch being the most accesible and movie like (and the only one to have been adapted as a movie… and we all know how that went!) Loved that you mentionedFreud
Yeah, this book definitely needs a little bit more love! I'm yet to read the Goldfinch or watch the movie, but I have heard bad things about the adaption!
I read The Little Friend and I couldn t understand why so many people disliked it or considered it boring. I never saw this book as boring, it is far more thrilling than the Secret History, Harriet is one of my favorite characters and the narrative filled with Homeric constructions sometimes left me out of breathe. There are so many symbolic scenes, like childrens trying to catch a snake is like playing with fire, they think they can do everything, but in the end their misjudgement leads them to dead ends. Harriet is a very brave girl who grew up in the shadow of her dead brother, along with her mom who was more like a phantom. Besides its complexity, the novel is also VERY FUNNY, sometimes i died of laughing. Can t understand why so many readers don t see the beauty of this book
OMG! You reminded me of "The Secret History"! I remember how huge an influence it had over me and the group of my friends back in college. We even compared ourselves to the characters 🙂 It was quite a long time ago, like 15 years, I forgot the name of the author and wasn't even very sure of the title as I read it in Polish, since I wasn't that good at English back then. Having said that, I don't want to watch this video because I'd like to read the book you are talking about. BTW - you haven't made a new video for a while, why's that? Take care!
Well let me know what you think of it when you read it! :) And don't worry, I took a week off last week to work on some scripts. I'll be uploading tomorrow! :)

Southern gothic as in southern English gothic?
Excellent...having a bad day and here you are to cheer the evening along. Muchly appreciated.
I second this :)

Great review. While it is in 3rd place of my favorite Tartt novels, I do love it.
I loved this book. You always review books I love!
I just found your channel and your videos are really interesting and insightful. Keep up the good work! 🌻
