Great little video Andy. They say ignorance is bliss but not for those with the knowledge. I agree with everything you said. I am a qualified mechanic and worked on all vehicles up to 3 ton for 30 years. I also worked as a Harley Davidson technician for 10 year and got my qualifications at the Harley college near Birmingham UK. I also worked for Crescent motorcycles in Verwood for a number of year mostly suzuki, yamaha, honda and KTM. I'm retired now at 68 But when I look back my biggest regret was selling my 1993 Ducati 900ss. I also changed my clutch for a tungsten caged kit, so much quieter and smoother in operation. My only concern with it was it still had the original cylinder head studs with the 'O' stamped on the tops which were prone to snap and bugger up the engine, but never did. I envy were you live , I spent 7 year living near Melbourne Victoria and wish I was still there. Have really enjoyed watching your videos of your Ducati rebuild and watching you ride it around Tasmania. Keep them coming. All the best. Mike.

No worries about the buttercup keyboard warriors, indeed most dont have any content on there channel, or do even respond back when I reply to there hate speech.. I am man enough to give them answer and try to lure them out in the open for a discussion 😉 none of them have yet replied 😀. Also I don't want claim that I do everything perfect or I the way others would do it, but for sure I am confident about what I do, how I do it and 30 years have proven that what I do works . I have one filosofy in my work life, I want to learn something new every day, something I did not yet know, or a new trade, or even a thing that was around for years before but I never realised or noticed before.. simple things like for example that plug that hold the rocker arm axle in the head from a 1200 engine (1198, MTS 1200, Diavel etc ) has the same size and tread as the Lambda (02 sensor) on the exhaust of the MTS 1200 and 1199 generation.. when I have such a moment each day I work my day is complete. 😜😜

EVR also makes an Anti-clank pressure plate with an extra steel plate bolted to the inside face of the pressure plate, does a similar thing as ur Dutch mechanics fix.

    • @toinevandenbiggelaar6083
      @toinevandenbiggelaar6083 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No sorry it doesn't as the EVR pressure plate doesn't make that friction connection between basket and centre hub.. same as the 48 theeth clutch sets, they wear out even faster then OEM sets simply due to the fact that it runs friction plates that have there friction material fitted on a steel core, so you gave 48 sharp thin steel notches hammering there way through aluminium grooves which obviously are softer then the notches made out of steel from the friction plates.. there are so many so called solutions out there for problems that basically don't correct the problem .

    • @TerribleTimes

@@toinevandenbiggelaar6083, think I followed yeh on the explanation, I did also fit a Barnet clucth pack at the same time. I assume that also helped quite it down, think the friction plates were aluminum too, hopefully help make the basket last a bit longer too at that is still stock, etc.. . .certainly is much quiter now and engages nicely compared to before it was replaced.

Mate Toine does p&p like I do on Shovels. I just know what the motor needs. I do it by feel, eye mixed with some knowlege and about 40 years of experience. I've never had a " what the fuck did you do my motors its shit" remark in my life. I did my diesel fitter mechanic apprenticeship at the end of the 70's into the 80's when it was an engineering course. Mate I watched Toine and thought thats a fucking professional. I worked in a garage in Melbourne and I tuned a Lotus Escort. I fine tuned her by road testing my initial set up and pulling over on the side of Whitehorse rd and giving her a tweek here and ther till I new she was in her sweet spot. The owner picked her up at about quarter to five and took off, he was back at 1700. I shat myself, I thought I'd been over confident in my ability. He asked the wanker Dell boss who tuned his prized vehicle. The boss didn't waste any time pointing at the new guy. The owner came over and gave me a 50 buck note and said it was the best tune he had ever had, the car ran pretty good too. I was sacked that arvo.

There are Moriarty's everywhere, ignore them and dont expend energy on them. If they can't understand why it rattles when you pull tbe clutch in there is no hope for them. A major benift of this Mod is it lengthens the service life of the basket as the driven/friction plate tangs dont beat the slots in the basket at idle in neutral. In the early days it was a new basket every second set of friction plates, it got expensive. If folks are annoyed by a dry clutch noise, a dry clutch Ducati is not for you. Go elsewhere or buy a wet clutch Testastretta. Owning a Diavel, a 848 Evo track bike or my old Pantah they are not as visceral as my 1098 SF, 900 Monster or Treblance 900 SS. Old school charm ♥️ Now where is my copy of Kelly's Heros for a refresh of Oddball (Donnald Sutherland ) wisdom.

When I dialed up Andy's this morning, I thought it was a hoax... an April fool's day like joke that some trolls are complaining about Toine and his clutch mod. I ordered the mod right after Andy did his video (probably to Toine's exasperation .... not only was I an impatient customer waiting for my shipment to California, USA as he'll recall, but the shear number of orders pouring in after Andy made the video was probably a bit much!). My clutch was in great shape unlike Andy's when he made the video, so I had to exchange a few of the smaller shimmed pieces to get the correct amount of overhang on the end cap, but the install took like 15 minutes. And a quick tip as well since I haven't seen this in here, but I used a telescoping magnet to pull the individual plates (the kind you buy at the auto parts store to grab that metal screw you drop down in the engine compartment from time to time) and each plate came out clean in seconds without having to reach in with fingers or tools. Anyway, once installed, the difference is amazing... both in the way it idles and in the way the bike feels on the road. My bike is garage kept, and when I ride, I typically open the garage door and start er' up to let her warm a minute before I roll her out onto the road. Previously, the clacking sounded like that yellow Monster in this vid. But inside my garage. HOLY HELL. EAR PLUGS PLEASE! Now, I start it up, and it's so much quieter that I was actually able to make a cell call standing next to the bike in my garage with it idling, only the engine noise present... that nice deep Ducati rumble (and to avoid the question, I have FBF high slip on pipes - 1998 900 SS/FE #126... so not generally quiet to begin with). And of course, when you pull in the clutch (especially with the open air as Andy has and I have as well), you'll hear the individual plates sliding against one another. I love it... keeps that original dry clutch sound, but in moderation. And as Andy described, the road manners with the mod are easily noticeable. One additional thing I've noticed is that with FCR 41mm carbs I have installed, I've always had to dial open the carbs to start and idle until warm or the bike would die. For some reason (probably because it's not tossing that energy back and forth as much in the clutch), I no longer have to dial it at all. Hit the starter, and she idles clean right away. Anyway, thanks Andy. Thanks Toine.

I don't understand the enjoyment of ridicule and criticism towards people about what they do or their ability or Channels for that matter, yeah question them. These often turn into vendettas supported by those who love to hate. Silly comments become really boring after years of hearing them, there comes a time when they cant stir a wry smile but more of a tired grimace.
Toine's experience and know-how cant be bought its gained over many years through enthusiasm, why these people are criticising is a mystery they rarely if ever say what their authority is to do so. I'm sure he knows he has no need for concern as his reputation and achievements say what needs to be known.
All that aside 2 weeks ago I was offered a Ducati DS1000 engine with 3200 miles on it complete swinging-arm and rear-wheel for £100, I couldn't help myself and bought it, in other words, I couldn't get the money out of my pocket fast enough. The guy I got it from was gonna build a trike with it - a wheel too many for me.
Now, what do I do with it, polish it and put Glass over it i.e. nice coffee table, make it a cutaway engine displayed in a cabinet or a Norcati and teach the Italians how Rex would've made a Duke handle properly? lol. Lyta tank, clip-on's, rear sets etc It has, of course, all been done before though I can't see one with a single-sided swinging arm.
    www.scribd.com/article/399071423/Norcati.
Depending on what I do I will need convert to carbs, I should've had a pair of Amal GP's about but can't find them. I do have a set of Bing's, not pretty and anyway they're part of a BMW Krauser heads barrels and piston set up I have sat (i.e. ornaments). So suggestions would be good.

Nice one mate. Armchair mechanics are the worst! When you get really good at your job you make it look easy, people think you may be thing short cuts, not doing it correctly in their eyes. I'm a chippie. It's taken me 40 years to make stuff look easy! You don't need to think about how to do the job, how to use the tools, only the end result. If you can see it in your head before you start then all is well. It's hard work making stuff look easy. This Ducati guy who's name i won't try to spell, he knows his stuff. He builds WSB motors for Christ's sake. You don't have to watch it. I watch it because i appreciate someone at the top of their game.

Nice one. People (me included) are idiots. Nothing is going to change that unfortunately.
But I suspect there is a sliding “idiot” scale. Even this idiot knows a dry clutch is going to rattle when the clutch is used. Sigh!

Seriously though, I think you're a legend m8, and I respect everything you say. That being said, IDK if it's because of the open cover, or because of something different in your sound recording setup, or what, but I merely made the observation that it was never that loud before you "fixed" it. Apparently I'm not alone. Maybe you don't hear it, but on this end it's loud as hell, every time you pull the clutch in. I understand the modification on at least an elementary level, and I don't dispute anything you've said, but why is it so much louder than before? Considering what you just said, I suspect the difference is due to the open cover, but I really don't know. I'm the 1st to admit when I don't know something, but I know what I hear. It's loud dude. If you could find the time, I'd like to hear your thoughts on why they still do that. The dry clutch I mean. Is it just one of those hold-over things like desmodromic valve drive that they just keep doing cuz that's how they always have, or is there really some advantage to the dry clutch? I can't see any, but I, personally would like to hear your thoughts on the subject. Thank you Mr. Andy, for everything you do. We truly do appreciate it.

It’s not just you mate, a lot of people have commented. I think it’s because people are focusing on it.
      Advantages of a dry clutch.
      1. The clutch material can’t contaminate the oil
      2. The clutch doesn’t add heat to the oil
      3. The clutch mass is spinning without the resistance of the oil
      4. You can service the clutch without draining your engine oil
      5. Because race bike
      6. Because Ducati
