- Zafar Masud is one of only two survivors of PIA Flight PK8303, which crashed in the suburbs of Karachi, Pakistan on 22 May 2020. It was the sixth Pakistani plane to crash in a decade. Here, he talks about 30 interminably long seconds before the crash, his miraculous survival and recovery, and the pressing need for improvement of domestic flight standards and safety. Zafar Masud is a seasoned banker and entrepreneur, focused on Development Finance, with over 27 years of proven track record of success and delivery.
He’s serving as President & CEO of The Bank of Punjab (BOP), since April 2020, which has a network of 636 branches with ~US$7Bn balance sheet and ~13000 staff. He has extensive experience of working at Board of Directors level for major public and private sector entities. He also contributed as member of IMF motivated Task Force on Framing SOE Law, set-up by the Ministry of Finance.
He is also a regular contributor to the local media on the topics of finance, economics and energy. His articles has been compiled in a book form called “Out of the Box”.
In May 2020, he had survived PK8303 airplane crash in Karachi. His colleagues dedicated a book to him called “The Miraculous Survivor”. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
@Mentour Pilot has a fantastic, informative video on this crash. I highly recommend the channel, which does consistently good work. The video explaining what happened with this flight, and what could have prevented the crash, is so well-done and informative.
Mr Zafar Masud, I am very glad you survived. May you continue to heal from the trauma of that day.
Agreed 100%, the MentourPilot video is so so so well done. A must see for anyone interested in this tragedy.
I am here from Mentor Pilot video
Just watched it actually and that's what got me here...
Here now, from the same video, from Mentour pilot's channel, my self!!

Did they blur his book there?
So it seems.
It should be possible to use reverse thrust even if you do not have the gear down. A button or trigger on the steerer stick
Please, no. This would be a disaster for aviation security. Imagine accidentally activating full reverse while going 450kt at FL 32000. Reverse Trust needs to be connected to the gear touching down.
let us make a compromise. the reverse gets activated by touch down of the bottom of the engines or the bottom of the fuselage when an emergency landing thing is activated. @@lauraquellmalz774
Search Lauda Flight 004 and you'll realize how bad of an idea that really is...
you are right. better to have an alternate activation with pressure on the underside of both the engines or the fuselage. or wingtip and fuselage together. or somethign like that. so wheels in isnt a problem. @@Prototype10_

Pure luck!

The auto-generated captions are bad.
Why do you need them when the man is speaking great English?
@@savagepaki6316 Some people are hard of hearing.
I myself benefit from captions because I sometimes have difficulty pulling voices from background noise (not really the case here). Sometimes the Captions guess the correct word better than I do.
God is nearer than jugulars....hope you appreciate that.
He said he passed out shortly before the crash. No, what happened is the crash caused amnesia and basically erased his memories a few seconds before impact.
@DavidWest2 - That's interesting, because I wondered about the reason for his fainting just before impact, and you have explained it.
The other matter which I couldn't understand - I think he said that the cockpit door flew open just *before* they crashed - that he saw "chaos beyond" and that "it seemed like the plane was going to nosedive".
Cockpit doors are supposed to be totally secure and impenetrable (as we sadly know from the Germanwings disaster a few years earlier).
So can anybody explain how this anomaly could possibly have happened? Cockpit doors don't just fly open - and he said this took place about 30 seconds before the impact itself.
@@mtm4a that one is a little harder to explain, my guess based on the "chaos beyond" and "nose dive" wording is that his memories got a bit scrambled at the very end before impact. Perhaps a bit of the crash itself got embedded in his brain as a memory and when his brain tried to make sense of the nonsensical memory, it turned into "the cockpit door flew open".
It could’ve happened as a result of grazing the runway which was traumatic enough to damage the engines. Also, I don’t think other countries all have strict cockpit door protocols like our FAA regulates. I would certainly think PIA did not.
I don't think the cockpit door was open; perhaps his mind conjured up this idea after the crash. Another thing he said was that the plane was nose-diving, which, in my opinion, is also not true. The plane's nose was up because the pilots were desperately trying to make it to the runway, as recorded in the CCTV footage. He was extremely anxious, and as he became unconscious, his mind just filled in the gaps. I wish he had talked more about that part, but at the same time, I can understand how difficult it must have been for him to do so.
Very well done for attributing your getting well and cure, to your own strong will power,, and support of friends, and not mentioning Allah SWT, not even once through out the video. Well done!
I can't tell if you are being supportive of him or sarcastic..
If U r bring sarcastic, just know that he said that he is non-religious...
he said he wasn't religous

Here's what I learned. Don't EVER fly on Pakistan International Airlines. 😂🤣😂🤣
My apologies, I wrote something about this man and his wife, I was wrong. I can’t find which comments I replied to
That says more about you than this man - try and be better.
Pakistan didn’t pay the victims squat

He says
*_GOD IS INSIDE EACH ONE OF US_*
CONGRATS !!
He is Exactly saying the OPPOSITE of ISLAM and QURAN, which states Creation and Creator are always different.
Thanks for EXPOSING ISLAM.
And with God inside each one of us makes it multiple Gods?? Which is against Monotheism.
God is within us … he said it … it’s a Hindu concept
As is islamic … Allah is closer to us than our jugular vein.
Survivor bias

It would be good if Zafar Sahib thanked Allah SWT for saving his life and turned back to Him in humility, and if he appreciated and reinforced his faith in Allah SWT, instead of continuing to ignore His bounties upon him.
مناسب تو یہی ہے کہ اللہ سبحانہ وتعالی کی نعمتوں کا شکر ادا کرے اور اس کی اطاعت اور عبادت کرنے میں اب پوری محنت لگائے۔
Most people dont give a lot of importance to religion and dont believe it is the only truth. There are 4000 religions with different mythologies.
Non religion is the second largest group of people, around 2 billion, after christians.
This person is clearly very non religious.
@@MEGALectureno atheism is in 1 billion. Islam is 2 billion and christian is 2.3 billion
I ask, why were others not spared and perished, it's none of your business to demand others to react to your liking. Don't drag religion into everything, this is the actual downfall of my beloved country, as every one believes that this was written in their fate and hence they should not be held accountable. Pilot being praised as martyr after this horrific crash, watch the terrible video coverage of their families hailing them as martyr stating they always wished to be martyrs (Shaheed), seriously?

I’m not a confident flyer but there’s no way I’d ever be able to get on a plane after this. So many innocent people dead directly caused by idiots, idiots who thought they were better than the rules, daring to take dangerous chances. Terrible 😢
This is the mistake of airport officials.
Didn’t even know how to explain properly.
