"I tend to drift into whatever accent I happen to be around." -Lea

Lea and most of the Filipinos who passed the Miss Saigon audition were products of Repertory Philippines, a world class local theater company doing mostly English plays and musicals. They were trained to be able to switch accents in a heartbeat! That's how talented their actors are!

The British accent is quite common in Asia. Older Hong Kongers, Singaporeans speak with it. I taught English in Taiwan, and our teaching materials, including the tapes students would listen to for pronunciation practice, were from England. And many of the English language television shows were as well. And back then most of the Americans in Asia were military, and quite frankly, they did not integrate well with the native people. It wasn’t really their fault, but they just weren’t in a position to do so. Whereas the British had had a presence for a much longer time, were more likely to speak the local languages, and be more established as businesspeople, teachers, or even church leaders. So a lot of native people flip easily between British and American accents.

About her “British” accent, if you watch the original film, a few of the girls have the same accent including her childhood friend Monique Wilson who was also cast. I think it may be the result of going to International school. It’s interesting that she now speaks like a native New Yorker.

She said in an interview that she would fake the British accent in Britain and an American accent in the states. She did it on purpose. People have asked her about this in interviews before

@@mike26fl89 I wouldn't say she's "faking" it, it's probably more like a habit. As someone who learned English through shows, movies, games, etc. the way I speak tends to change depending on my surroundings as well.

The auditions for MISS SAIGON were in 1988 (Lea was 17) and you're seeing footage from her callback. (She wasn't taught music at her audition.) Rehearsals and show started in London in 1989 when she was already 18. She did the show on Broadway in 1991-92. She was asked to be the first Asian (actually first non-white) Eponine on Broadway in 1993. Lea was already well-known in the Philippines. She started professionally doing theater at age 7 (as one of the kids in THE KING AND I) and played her first leading role at age 9 (title role in ANNIE). She recorded her first album when she was 9 years old (I think it was released when she was 10) and it certified gold. Lea had a TV variety show with her brother called Love, Lea when she was 12-14 years old. Basically, she already had quite a career before this audition (opened for Stevie Wonder in concert in the Philippines, been on tour with Menudo - a Latin boy band that was HUGE back in the day). Hope you'll watch more Lea Salonga vids. First - she's a fantastic performer. Second - she has a lot of fans that like to watch reaction vids (like me).

She said in an interview that she has a great set of ear. She can esily adopt the accent wherever she is like the British and Australian accent and she is from Repertory Philippines where British accent is commonly used for some musical. There are tons of video of her with strong British accent.

You can see Lea in interviews in Britain (mainly during MISS SAIGON) and she often has that British accent. But watch videos over the years since then and she sounds more American. Sometimes her Filipino accent is more pronounced - mainly in Filipino interviews - but when she is interviews in the USA, you hardly hear an accent.

Lea starts singing as young as 5 years old on theatre and opera and established her singing career at that very young age

Lea started performing at age 7 in theater (I don’t think she has ever done opera) and after that did albums, concerts, film, tv in addition to theater.

I have been to the Philippines and I noticed that in certain parts of the country they have that accent. Mostly in affluent communities. Nevertheless, Lea was phenomenal. 👍🏻

It is easy to adapt the British accent. I mean, my sister and I could. Filipinos are great when it comes to imitating people.
