Lea was 17 years old in this video, auditioning for MISS SAIGON (this is actually her callback where she was learning a song from the show), the new show written by the people who wrote the hit musical LES MISERABLES. Lea was already an established performer in the Philippines but she became an international star once she starred in MISS SAIGON at age 18. FYI: this is part of a longer video about the making of MISS SAIGON that has more about the audition process, rehearsals for the show, and I think some interviews right after it opened. Lea started in musical theater when she was 7 years old in the Philippines. She played her first lead role at age 9 (ANNIE) and released her first album at age 10 which certified gold. Lea hosted a musical tv show from ages 12-14. Throughout her childhood and teens she did theater, films, tv, concerts and albums. She originated the role of Kim in MISS SAIGON in London at age 18, on Broadway at age 20, and then won all the major theater awards for her performances. (She is often called "The Pride of the Philippines" because her success with MISS SAIGON put the Philippines on the map and brought attention to the amazing talent in the country.) She is the singing voice of two Disney princesses: Jasmine and Mulan. Definitely!! Lea has *many* outstanding performances, but "On My Own" (from the 10th anniversary Les Misérables special) has to be her best and most known live performance.
Lea won the Tony [Broadway, USA] and Olivier [London] Best Actress in a musical for this role. After that, she became known as the singing voice[s] of most Disney princesses. She also toured with the company of Les Misérables as Eponine and sometimes as Fantine. At this call back audition, the producers and director had already been to several cities all over the world looking for the right Kim and they found Lea in Manila. These producers have searched UK, US, Other parts of Asia until they found her in the Philippines. She's the classic Jasmine and Mulan singing voice.
