I stopped being concerned about the anachronistic technology in the game once I remembered that earlier in the timeline, they had giant robots and lightning men and magic radios. Metal Gear is essentially an alternate timeline where technology took a leap forward in the mid-1950s and was shaped by the various world conflicts which were themselves a product of that advanced technology.
Yeah, the major setting of metal gear as a series, from the very first game on the MSX, was an alternate timeline where wars lasted longer and technology developed much further than it should have at the time. In 1980 they already had holograms, but in the style of a Walkman. In 2014 they had flying people and mech suits and nanomachine implants and semibiological robot "geckos". By 2018 they just straight up have cyborg ninjas and lasers. Its also very interesting, because similar to our world, the development of technology is sort of exponential. The more it developed, the more it could develop, so from what was initially a small leap ahead in technology eventually landed in a MAJOR GAP ahead in technology.

The sleep darts are definitely one of the "sci-fi" elements of these games, but it makes me wonder what kind of research there's actually been into that sort of thing. Since certain drugs are so powerful in just microgram doses, I can imagine there's some research into finding or designing some kind of chemical with that sort of potency but a less chaotic and more reliable subduing effect.
They can be that powerful, opioids are no joke. The missing part is there shoule be a naloxone shot being administered immediately after the "bad guy" (usually a dangerous suspect, but you need him alive) has been subdued and put in proper control (like, being cuffed-up), or it will not be a "less-lethal" approach, the "bad guy" would still die from respiratory depression.
Every single person needs a different level of anesthetic to match their mass or the anesthetic either won't work as intended or will kill them. Add onto that that darts have a much worse trajectory as he points out, less accurate, won't shoot as far, likely have a worse chance at penetrating into the skin through any heavy padding or armour AND the fact that even if it all worked as intended, the victim would never be put straight to sleep and would instead take at least 30 seconds to a minute or more to knock them out giving them plenty of time to raise an alarm and that after being knocked out, the victim would likely wake up within a few minutes too unless being administered a continuous dose (which they wouldn't be) and you end up with a weapon that is entirely useless and far too complicated to get right vs simply shooting them dead with a conventional sniper rifle.
@@bloodwolfgaming9269 I don’t think anyone is debating who’s the stronger character or who would win in a fight, fisher is set in reality with real world technology while snake has tech hundreds of years more advanced.
“The game rewards you for not killing people.” You’re not wrong there, the gameplay alters based on how you play. Like the more you kill people, the harder they get. For example; Killing people with headshots increase the number of Kevlar/Steel helmets to be distributed in future missions. Getting more actively into gun fights increase soldiers to later show up in body armor such as flak vests. If you basically kill a lot of people as each mission goes by, your character becomes caked in blood symbolizing your actions of being cold-hearted killer. Getting caught more frequently leads to more outposts outfitting themselves with more men and equipment such as MGs and mortars. Such details really do pull weight with how you play the game and even subtlety addresses your morals as a soldier based on how you go about in MGSV.
At the same time, if all you do is put people to sleep instead of kill them, enemies are less likely to stay in a surrender state. I think it also affects how aggressively they fight you but I don't remember for sure.
luckily you can send your guys on combat deployments to get rid of your enemies' extra equipment for a while, and the extra MGs and mortars are just extra loot for Mother Base
This right here was a major contribution to the game, once all the markers got into the red it felt much more like a mgs game, giving you reason to choose stealth aside from personal choice, before that was more training than anything, but running into an outpost with snipers, rpg's, and half the guys in full protection, and reflex mode off? Gold
But they are still idiots. Their comrade falls down in front of them asleep and they just go " huh?". Rather than straight to alert. And you run 50 yards from their outpost and they stop following you. They are simple as it gets
@@johnm3907 they are most likely sleep deprived in a country full of opium and weed, it's fairly reasonable to assume that somebody randomly passing out is probably related to those factors before you start considering a lunatic with a tranquillizer gun.
I always wanted these guys to react to some cutscenes of the series, like a lot the earlier MGS titles had cutscenes that had loads of military tactics and techniques in them. I WANT TO SEE THAT.
I was a heroin addict for years. Even doing a shot in the muscle with a high dose, your nodded out within seconds so I mean it's not super out of realism. These are people that probably don't have a tolerance also. The Fulton device was an actual concept the military had at some point but don't remember if ever really used but it is a real concept. U can go see the prototypes at military museums. The amazing thing with metal gear solid is the realism and silliness of it all
That dog the editors showed grabs their arms the exact same way D-dog does. He keeps them immobilized for five whole seconds The flight medic is not only feature, but is upgraded to deal with more severe injuries as you level up your medical unit
No.. thats a refueling prong. Cargo planes were used for the Fulton Surface-To-Air Recovery System irl. Plus it would need 2 prongs that go in toward the center, and the helicopter blades would break the fulton wires..
It should be clarified that the major setting if Metal Gear Solid as a series is a world where wars lasted longer and the technology developed during wartime exceeded far beyond the technology that actually should have at the time, but with the same stylizations of the tech that actually existed. Hence the Hologram Walkman Radio lol
Not to mention that supposedly is classified technology, with the whole conspiracy stuff in Metal Gear one of them pretty much implies that the technology that is revealed to the public is inferior to the one used in extremely classified operations and such, I mean you even see signs of that with the honey bee mission or Sahelathropus itself being completely erased from history in order to never let a trace of it's technology to be leaked
But wait, I thought the MGS tech was made with “Currently Existing Technology”? Are you telling me we actually DON’T have bipedal tanks that shoot lasers?
Honestly this is much closer to what I wanted the first time. And what I’ve been looking for is some explanation for all the real military equipment in the game. I know a lot of it in the MGS series is real because Kojima has used his military advisor, Motosada Mori, a veteran of counter terrorism special forces of memory serves. Ever since the first MGS, he would teach the development team how to properly ‘clear’ an area, and they would do these drills through the building with everyone else working in offices around them. But I like these guys explaining about the refueling spike on the choppers and stuff like that. I wish we could get an entire documentary on all the real military gear features throughout the series. Hell, even give these guys a couple of hours to sit and watch a REAL pro at the game work. Someone like myself who doesn’t use a lot of suppressors, or tranq guns, or any other unrealistic gear or features or HUD. Especially the OSP missions where you REALLY have to get creative in your approach to any situation you encounter. Sorry I love this game if you can’t tell lol
Usually the “spec op” guys that do these videos are complete tools, but these guys know their stuff and are genuine fans of the game. Great video. Cool dudes.
As a janitor, I would like to point out that putting an out of order sign on a bathroom to stop someone from going in will only entice someone to pick that one in particular.
8:55 The game actually makes an attempt to model this and the story addresses it to some degree. in the world of the game, your support team has come up with a general anesthesia (like Propofol) and where you inject the target matters. if you hit them in an extremity it will take some time to work, or may not work at all. if you hit them multiple times it will work faster. a head shot is instant knock out. i think during game development they considered overdosing where you could accidentally kill a guard with too many injections, but ultimately you can't OD them. the mechanics of that game are pretty amazing
A minor correction. The Soviets didn't want to overtake Afghanistan. They were concerned with the rising Islamist extremism in the region, right on their doorstep you could say. So they invaded to put a stop to it. Time is a flat circle.
could you imagine being a enemy in a small building all of a sudden you hear your men getting killed by a dog they didnt know was there? that would be terrifying.
MGSV was one of the greatest games ever. I've replayed it 5 times now from start to finish. It's just amazing with a different experience all the time.
You should get these guys to try out Doorkickers 2. You play as a squad of Rangers, so Cameron should be right at home. They should get to see the inventory descriptions too, they're filled with military acronyms and technical descriptions, I'm wondering how much is gibberish.
I love that metal gear solid and splinter cell and a bunch of other stealth games sort of playoff tagging enemies as situational awareness so it's not any form of technology but an ability of the character.
I'm old and they made me feel older lol. We got mix'n'match BDUs and fatigues in basic, as I went in right as the last bits of drab were filtering out.

@@Jhakaro most of those things you listed apply to the darts in the game. I can tell you haven't played it before
Sleepd darts do exist...
3:14 And so the age old Fisher vs. Snake battle continues.
Rooster Teeth's Death Battle proved that Snake would win.
@@bloodwolfgaming9269 I don’t think anyone is debating who’s the stronger character or who would win in a fight, fisher is set in reality with real world technology while snake has tech hundreds of years more advanced.

Thank you boss
the 'see through walls' aspect is explained in the game as a visual representation of what Snake can hear, its spacial awareness based on sound
“The game rewards you for not killing people.” You’re not wrong there, the gameplay alters based on how you play. Like the more you kill people, the harder they get.
For example;
Killing people with headshots increase the number of Kevlar/Steel helmets to be distributed in future missions.
Next time have them react to the "this is what 300 hours of ground zeros looks like"

5:35 "Oh, he's missing an arm. Makes him lighter." I always love military dark humor lol
He keeps them immobilized for five whole seconds
The flight medic is not only feature, but is upgraded to deal with more severe injuries as you level up your medical unit
6:34 fun fact! Those are not refuelling prongs they are the arms use to catch people that have been fulton extracted
Dont planes do that
No.. thats a refueling prong. Cargo planes were used for the Fulton Surface-To-Air Recovery System irl. Plus it would need 2 prongs that go in toward the center, and the helicopter blades would break the fulton wires..
I see! I suppose the helis would be making long-range flights, thanks for correcting me on that one!
Maybe in the game they work for that, since we don't see anywhere where they could host a plane the size of an AC130
It’s still so gutting to think there’s never going to be another one.

Not to mention that supposedly is classified technology, with the whole conspiracy stuff in Metal Gear one of them pretty much implies that the technology that is revealed to the public is inferior to the one used in extremely classified operations and such, I mean you even see signs of that with the honey bee mission or Sahelathropus itself being completely erased from history in order to never let a trace of it's technology to be leaked
damn this makes me want to revisit this game again, had a lot of good times with it when it first came out....
I love that you don't mention snake looking through scopes with his right eye that has an eye patch over it
But wait, I thought the MGS tech was made with “Currently Existing Technology”? Are you telling me we actually DON’T have bipedal tanks that shoot lasers?
"Lol" said the US government "lmao."
7:07 To be fair, now all these soldiers get to tell people that it took the legendary Snake to take them down
Honestly this is much closer to what I wanted the first time.
That isn't a refueling probe.
It's actually the Fulton recovery hook, it was modified for the choppers.

The best thing about Kojima games is they're serious when they need to be serious, and funny when it needs to be funny.
That should be the standard for all action games, im looking at you call of duty.
I was army MP for twelve years, and I’ll always remember one of our canines in Korea, Moose. He was a good boy.
5:26 Is it just me or in the reflection of Millers glasses you see Venom snake in his hospital outfit?
Yeah the bandages are on his forehead for sure
You guys are cool! You're getting the serious parts of MGSV:TPP!

A minor correction. The Soviets didn't want to overtake Afghanistan. They were concerned with the rising Islamist extremism in the region, right on their doorstep you could say. So they invaded to put a stop to it. Time is a flat circle.
