    The point that I take away is; he had prominent highly successful figures pushing him forward and showing him how to conform to the industry standards. The Wayans crafted their own avenue and were not only threatened to conform but were ostracized when they didn’t. Granted their talent and genre varied but everyone benefited from “In living Color…” look at Jim Carrey, Jennifer Lopez, Jamie Fox to name a few.

      He’s saying that will smith was a conformist. We love wills work but at the end of the day he was a cleaner act than other rappers and had a wholesome show that didn’t ruffle feathers so it was easier to get into big movies and get those Grammys for his albums. He had higher crossover value which is why his bank account looks like it does now. The wayans made their own lane and we’re successful in their own right. But marlon is acknowledging that they obviously don’t have wills success in a material sense.

    • @MrArtVein
      @MrArtVein ปีที่แล้ว +13

      This low level. You need a mentor in your field who has done what you're trying to accomplish and looks like you. If you missing any of those elements It's going to be a lot harder. All advice isn't great advice. Especially if they live by different set of rules. People like Tyson lucked out and found someone who essentially became his father even though he didn't look like him and in a sport glorified for brutality. In the corporate space or even govt space it's night and day. The day you have something great to add in a meeting and someone says the same exact thing you just said but is applauded instead is the day you realize experience matters. If you don't look like me you have no emotional connection to certain issues outside of empathy. I remember I let my mentor know this director had it out for me since I met him despite all attempts to build a relationship and let him know it's probably because I'm Black, as I saw it play out similarly with others. I take a rare vacation come back to work and my mentor says yeah I saw what you meant be careful and it cost me my job. It wasn't that my mentor was a bad person, he just has no reference what it's like to be a Black man in corporate America and he had nothing to offer me. Matter of fact the only other Black face in upper management was fired right before me under "restructuring" ie no reason at all. So yes, have your ducks in a row but make sure it's the right duck. I can't mentor a trans woman through anything, as I have zero frame of reference and I'm not gonna act like I know that life. So find someone like you, not just someone successful. Otherwise you're wasting your time

    • @spiegeltn

      @@MrArtVein I somewhat agreed with you until you pulled the race card. I’m sorry but I just don’t like that victim mentality. I’m Vietnamese American and when things don’t go my way I don’t blame that shit on my race. When I was in the army I was the only Asian in my platoon. Did I see that as a disadvantage? Hell fking no. I thought of that as an advantage, flash toward two years in, I made Sgt. When I got out to work for the VA I was lucky enough to have a mentor and guess what? She was black. My greatest mentor I ever had. So some of the chit you say is because you have a victim mentality. That I cannot respect. Just know, I expect more bad shit to happen to me than good on any given day. Even with that mindset I will never settle for a victim mentality. If you want it bad enough, you can work to get it. If I had your mindset, For sure I wouldn’t have made Sgt in the US Army. Had I have your mindset, I would have blamed being small and Vietnamese in the army limited me to getting promoted faster because I was a true minority. If you don’t know anything about the military, 2 years is the fastest time you can make the rank of Sgt on active duty. In todays army, BLACKS AND HISPANICS out numbers any other race. Remember I told you I was VIETNAMESE American. Stop it with the “I’m black” BS. If you are at a disadvantage where does that put me? I will never respect guys like you for having such mentality like this. You are what you limit yourself to. Some have it easier than others and that’s perfectly fine. Unless you live in a 3rd world country, you are limiting yourself with that mindset. It’s a matter of how bad you want it. I joined the military at 5’5 and less than 100 lbs, I actually needed a waiver because I was underweight. I was definitely not your “model” looking soldier but before my time was up, people jokingly told me they might have to test me for steroids. To me that was a Low Key compliment. That told me that my hard work was paying off. Someone like you probably would taken it in a negative way and Blame it on your skin color.

      I don’t think it’s a statement that can be deemed 100% true in all cases, I’m sure there’s actors that have gotten rolls as big as Will’s without having to “sell their souls” whatever you’re talking about…. Denzel, Washington, one of the most successful black men in Hollywood for decades, devout Christian….. it’s just a dangerous fact to say if you got a big role in Hollywood, it means you sold your soul like there aren’t pockets of good people in there even though mainly, it’s a cesspool…. even some actors, I know from interviews have huge regrets about stuff they did to achieve success, and that doesn’t mean they sold their soul, it means they messed up. I mean to really sell your soul you would have to have a one on one sit down with Lucifer himself, but it’s just a new Satanic panic. We went through the same thing in the late 80s and early 90s. People don’t have much forgiveness, or Grace in their hearts these days, though, for people who acknowledge that they have made mistakes and are trying to be a different person, I mean, even MrBeast is a target of cancel culture for helping people….like the world is insane right now…
