thank you for this game, I found this when I was broke as can be and wanted to play a table top rpg. your game is a godsend Ive been playing it ever since
This video pretty much sums up everything I like about BFRPG except for one thing: how easy the system is to modify. The rules-lite nature of the game makes tacking on new classes and house rules dirt simple. BFRPG doesn't get nearly enough love in the gaming community.
After watching this video, I literally went to the basic fantasy website, and looked up all the books available for print from amazon...and bought them all...for less than what 2 5e books would go for, and there is still a ton of free content on the basic fantasy website. I’m excited to get all this content and to start reading it.
I wish i could get my players onto this. They really like 5e D&D though, so that's what I run. They think they'll lose out if they go to this - but they don't really know what they're missing. Less is more.
Just like you …I found this game by trying to find some old D&D modules. I love this game and all the resources it has available. I can’t wait to get the hardback version of it to display with my other RPG books.
It's a fantastic system and I think my total investment for all the books was about $40 total. So many books for such low cost and the system is fluid and easy to play
I've ordered some of the core books for this system. A simple, well put together game and for the price you can't go wrong. I do, however, feel like a bit of an oddity when ever I see these TH-cam reviews. I think I'm the only person in the whole word who likes descending A/C and the THAC0 system! I can't help feeling a bit sad at it's demise.
Jose Kercado Excellent! There's a writer/TH-camr who runs Call of Cthulhu, named Seth Skorkowski, who does reviews of its modules, and he makes suggestions on how to improve those modules where things are say, inconsistent, or the authors forgot to link events, so he fills in the gaps with his own suggestions. Any fresh ideas are helpful!
Jose, I want to thank you very much for this Vid. I watched this vid and I ordered a bunch of books from amazon. What a great system. It brings me back to the the joys of AD&D back in the 80's. Simple ,fun and cheap. I think I will run my daughter and her friends in a game, its that simple. Again thanks Jose. Good gaming to you.
Great review of the game (just subbed to your channel), always good to see enthusiastic people talking about their passion within the hobby; I'm relatively new to the OSR side of things, but have picked up Basic Fantasy, White Hack, Lamentations of the Flame Princess and a few others that I'm looking forward to trying.
I recently found this product and was already sold (downloaded it and bought the major books), but your video was so on spot and energetic, I had to watch the whole thing and subscribed. I'm a solo player but am also an old timer and come from DND & ADND originals. I've played a few others, such as White Box (an even smaller, complete, one book simple design) Dungeon Crawl Classic, Swords & Wizardry and a few others. They are all awesome, but this design, BFRPG, makes it simple for me to manage a solo game and quickly process encounters. It also makes me use the best RPG tool ever... my OWN imagination. Anyhow, I enjoyed your video and look forward to watching more new ones. Thanks!
I just wanted to say thank you. I came across your videos and I looked into this system. It is great. I still play my 5th edition dungeons and dragons but man this is such a great tool. I love the adventures. So again thank you for getting me started on this system!
Jose Kercado I love to introduce people to dungeons and dragons... However the big thing is the cost. Sure you can download the free stuff off WOTC web page.. But it only goes to 5th level..and people can get everything here with BF RPG.. For a great price. And for me it was and still is a family game .. My whole family plays dungeons and dragons.. We started with 1st edition and played every edition since.. But not everyone can afford dungeons and dragons books or supplements.. But with this you get everything for a great cost. So I tell everyone now hey download or buy this system and play this system to see if they like this kinda of game.. And if they want to try dungeons and dragons than down load the free dungeons and dragons stuff. Heck.. It is too the point where I tell all my new players not to waste money on buy dungeons and dragons stuff because i just print off what they need because it cost so much.. Where as if we run a game of this.. I can just buy them all the books.. I can just go on and on about this game system.. Again thank you for introducing it to me!
Jose Kercado i hear you on that man. With christmas coming up .. I know it is on the top of my gift list.. For my friends and family.. I might even throw in some coffee along with the books lol!
Yeah, my kids have been playing 5e for a couple years now and they just figured out the combat rules and still fuzzy on the details (can't get them to actually read the rules, which was obviously a disaster when I tried to run 3rd edition for them). The youngest one insists on playing druids all the time - there's a download able supplement for that. Now I just need ones for bizarre races and monks. Although there might be one already, and frankly I could write one up myself.
I enjoyed watching this video. Nice job. Basic Fantasy RPG is a great system, and anyone interested in getting into tabletop fantasy RPGs should start here. It would be interesting to see more BFRPG videos from you. What are your house rules? What campaign setting do you play in? Have you created your own? Maybe even some gaming session recaps would be fun. Keep up the great work!
Depending on who is playing I might also play Swords & Wizardry, at least when my kids were much younger. That system you can get kids playing a game pretty young, mine were 6 & 8 at the time.
Great review. Could you make a video going a bit more in depth on the Classes? One of the best parts of this system is how they as improved from classic DnD classes without bloating them up.
I like your style, you needn't change much. You have so much passion for gaming it bleeds through & refreshing, the videos are a joy to watch. OH, though it it's a spendy buy in I heard great things about Dungeon Crawl Classics - old school game taking inspiration from B/X or OD&D & adding flavor from other old school games such as Role Master & Warhammer Fantasy or Runequest (I'm not sure about the latter as my memory is fuzzy concerning RQ). Also I'd love to see a video concerning the settings you use in your games. Are they homebrew or store bought settings you make your own. I love hearing what others do running their games as I run mine.
Your energy really comes across. I'm going to check it out, could be really good if it's a bit more streamlined. Also they should pay you commission!! :-)
Dove head first into this system, and i absolutely love it! Thanks for the review! Now how do i convince my friends to try this over the usual pathfinder...
The only things I don't like. Thief abilities are percentages. It would be easier to make it a d20 and vary the difficulty. Also, the saving throws. Using characteristics such as wisdom or dexterity is much more intuitive than "Paralysis" or "Breath Weapon".
Maybe? I guess that you could do straight-up dungeoneering, and use random monster and treasure tables for rooms and encounters. I personally have never tried to use it like that.
DCC is great, but it's not aiming at the same target as BF. I love them both, but the implied setting and the style of play that each game supports is quite different for me.
The forum is trash. A mod made fun of me for not owning a camera (I was asking about the design of a dice tower I had designed and made myself). I reported him, and got permabanned for reporting a trolling mod. Don't go to the forum. Oh, and the head of the forum (who was also the guy who made the game) then proceeded to harrass me through e-mails about how wonderful of a person that idiot mod was and how horrible of a person I was for reporting him. He also directly stated that he did NOT want me to play his game. He even ip banned me just so I could never look at the forum again. And all that, over reporting a trolling mod. Yeah, lovely community. That incident made me completely lose the last of my faith and trust in the fantasy rpg community. And yet here I am, looking up videos about a system I'm literally forbidden to play. I really need to find a new hobby.
I just watched your video, Jose, and you had my wife and I both laughing at some points. Thank you for the kind words, I appreciate it.
"But wait there's more!" :D I bet you are a fun Game Master.
thank you for this game, I found this when I was broke as can be and wanted to play a table top rpg. your game is a godsend Ive been playing it ever since

Oh... if only my Father didn't hate everything so much he wanted to make his own system... like,
6 times.
Did he ever get to make it?
After watching this video, I literally went to the basic fantasy website, and looked up all the books available for print from amazon...and bought them all...for less than what 2 5e books would go for, and there is still a ton of free content on the basic fantasy website. I’m excited to get all this content and to start reading it.
The adventures are really great! Morgansfort could literally be an entire campaign.
Im one of Chris's in person players and and play testers i have alot of fun with it just wanted to say thanks for the nice words and good review
I wish i could get my players onto this. They really like 5e D&D though, so that's what I run.
They think they'll lose out if they go to this - but they don't really know what they're missing. Less is more.
just introduce it to them. explain how OSR works, show them the "Old School Primer" run something like keep on the borderlands.
Just picked up the system. Can't go wrong for the price. Easy to learn and very well structured.
I really dig basic fantasy we were using 5E but this has completely taken that over . and you get a lot for the cost of one dnd book 🐲🐲
I've ordered some of the core books for this system. A simple, well put together game and for the price you can't go wrong. You mentioned Morgansfort being fantastic, and I'd like to see a review video when you finish if possible? Great review in any case!
Jose Kercado Excellent! When you said "I recommend that you go right now...." I literally had just downloaded it and paused your video to read the pdf.
Thanks to you, I bought the Basic Fantasy rules and scenarios! Looking forward to it!
I love this game, I play this with my dad! Very fun, it’s worth it to go through all the tutorial!
Try ICRPG or Dungeon Crawl Classics!
Just got myself a hardcopy of DCC and am enjoying reading it at the moment - thanks for the recommendation :)

Nice review. Also, your character sheet on the site is great.

Ordered some of these books just based on price. The good review is a huge bonus!
Just recently found this system and so far love it! Also just found your channel and subscribed, enjoying the content so far!

Thanks for this. I am looking to get back into tabletop RPGs, and will now check this Basic Fantasy out!

I've had the PDFs for a while now. I decided to go ahead and buy the book last night. Looking forward to reading it again. :D

Nice video. I laughed. Glad to see so much love for BFRPG. I'll be sure to share the video because there is no way you're not going to like that.
I'd like you to review some of the supplements for Basic Fantasy RPG or Swords & Wizardry Complete RPG Jose.
I like your style, you needn't change much. You have so much passion for gaming it bleeds through & refreshing, the videos are a joy to watch. This is such a fantastic review. You're great, man!
Genesys is taking new, but I absolutely love the system so far, I'm going to have pick up the core rule book of basic fantasy.
Great Review Jose!
What do you think of Savage Worlds?
Does the Basic Fantasy book include rules for creating monsters? Just curious if it had that tool within it 🙂
I have a copy of this, one of these days I need to play it lol
Me too! Maybe a patreon game Terminally Nerdy?
Yes, It’s very fun to play
Dove head first into this system, and i absolutely love it! Thanks for the review! Now how do i convince my friends to try this over the usual pathfinder...
Great vid, thank you. This looks like a great system
After watching this video and others, I'm definitely buying this
This is amazing! thanks for sharing this!
I just downloaded the rules!
Great video, enjoyed it. Will give Basic Fantasy RPG a look!
100% true review
When he says free, he means FREE!
They don't even ask you for an email to send spam to your mailbox! That's how free it is!
I might try it
Can this game be played solo if so how?
This is a pretty good system
The only things I don't like. Thief abilities are percentages. It would be easier to make it a d20 and vary the difficulty. Also, the saving throws. Using characteristics such as wisdom or dexterity is much more intuitive than "Paralysis" or "Breath Weapon".
Subbed. Really love the system.
Great video! just subscribed.
Check out the blackvoid role-playing game
Can you do a video on solo play
Where did you get the hardcover? I couldn't make out what you said.
Lulu! 🙂
Can i play this solo?only by my self? No gm?
Maybe? I guess that you could do straight-up dungeoneering, and use random monster and treasure tables for rooms and encounters. I personally have never tried to use it like that.
I want my own rpg like if think i can make my own
Ever try cyberpunk 2055
$3 dollars for a module -- so half what a stapled together module cost in 1985.
What happened to you anyway
DCC. Read DCC.
Dungeon Crawl Classics. A great rpg system (monsters and all) in one mighty tome.
DCC is great, but it's not aiming at the same target as BF.
I love them both, but the implied setting and the style of play that each game supports is quite different for me.
That so many people think ascending armor class is a major improvement over descending is hilarious.
Intuitively it feels that way to me, why would it be better the other way around?
The forum is trash. A mod made fun of me for not owning a camera (I was asking about the design of a dice tower I had designed and made myself). I reported him, and got permabanned for reporting a trolling mod. Don't go to the forum. Yeah, lovely community. That incident made me completely lose the last of my faith and trust in the fantasy rpg community.
And yet here I am, looking up videos about a system I'm literally forbidden to play. I really need to find a new hobby.
Do you find characters to be squishy in this system?
At the first three levels, yes but not too much so, except for magic-users... It's fun, though!
