    im not saying the MS20 is naff. The MS20 is a great synth, if i was to recommend one id get the Full size reissue as you then have both Filter options. But if you get a chance get an ms10.
    ill buy hainbachs tune for a tenner and then send the rest direct.

    A story for you of being reunited forever with my first love:
    My first encounter with a real synth was an MS10 in 1981 in music lessons at age 11. I was already becoming fascinated with synths way before then. My Dad would play me his DSOTM and WOTW records. I became very fixated and obsessed with that MS10 in music lessons. Came home after school. “Mum, can I have an MS10 for Christmas please?!” “How much!? No way, boy!” Had to leave it sadly behind when I moved from middle school up to upper school. No analogue synths there, very disappointed. Never forgot about that old MS10. Missed it a lot. Grew up, got a job, started buying old synths but could never find an MS10 and always wondered about that old MS10 in my old school. In 2004, after 23 years since first encountering that MS10, I happened upon it once again, sitting atop a cupboard in a music room whilst being given a tour, a trip down memory lane of my old middle school by the Caretaker who I had by amazing chance become friends with through someone who worked at the school. I asked if they still used it, would they sell it to me? The Caretaker would find out for me. A few weeks later, got a msg from the Caretaker, “I have your old synth here for you.” 😲😍 My original music teacher had just retired. The new music teacher was young and clueless as to how to get sound out of the MS10. The Caretaker found it lying in a skip outside the building, about to be dumped as junk! He rescued it for me. I got it for free! Brought it home, gave it so much love, stripped it and cleaned it. Emptied out a ton of pencil leads that years of schoolkids had poked into its patch bay jacks. It still worked perfectly for a while but then failed. Shipped it off to Korg UK. All fixed and recalibrated within a few weeks. Lovely jubbly! Still with me to this day, still works perfectly, I will never be parted from it! A prized and treasured possesion from my school days, the very same synth I fell in love with and obsessed over in middle school music lessons was now back with me again, all mine. I caught up with the original music teacher a few years later into his retirement. Told him the story. He was very touched and happy. Apparently he got in big trouble at the time in 1981 for blowing the year’s school music budget on it! He still had an old book from back then on analogue synthesis, he signed it and gave it to me. What a brilliant chap! Long since passed away now. I haven’t forgotten him and the influence he had on me as a kid in music lessons. Love my old MS10 to bits! ❤️

      @spidericemidasiosmusicprod1309 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@DarkMetaOFFICIAL 😅 I won’t lie. When I got that Caretaker’s msg, my heart was pounding and my mind was indeed melted! Doesn’t happen often. Takes a lot to do that to me! Probably similar to how it feels to win the lottery! I couldn’t get over to his place fast enough to pick it up. I would still have been pretty excited if it was any other MS10, but it was the very same one I had played, tweaked, loved and hogged to myself at every opportunity in music lessons as an 11 year old kid. The very same one I had never forgotten about and wondered about for all those years. Maybe it was like being reunited with a close friend or family member you thought you’d never see again, or something! Maybe it was like getting a significant piece of myself back again. That synth did have a profound effect on me when I first encountered it.
      It was awesome to visit my original music teacher in his retirement, share the story and hear his side of it, over some cake and tea in his conservatory one afternoon. Purchasing an analogue synthesizer for his lessons with the school music budget was a bit frowned upon. Quite radical, instead of the usual tambourines, triangles, xylophones, recorders...🤣 He admitted he might have bought it for himself just a little bit too! 😆 What a legend.

      Reminds me a bit of a story I have with a programming book. I was in later primary school in '02ish, and found a book for Tandy102/Trs-80 model machines from mid 80s in the library. I checked it out, got home, and hopelessly asked my parents if they had a computer that matched the book's requirements.
      Wildly, they had a TRS-80 Model 100 lost in the attic with a pile of extra bits and manuals. Learned an amount of programming knowledge on a machine running Microsoft Basic on 4 AA batteries, but eventually had to send the book back to school.
      Years later, I managed to get a message to the current librarian, asking for any chance to see that original book again, and she came through! Just before the book was to be retired, she sent it to me, and I'm still beyond grateful all these years later for that original copy of what started me down many years of computer programming joys.
      The original librarian that I had in school has long since passed away, but I should really try to reach out to the one that granted me the book... Thank you for your story, it brought back a lot of fond memories for me.

    That fake velocity feature is common on YAMAHA FM keyboards! I remember having fun with the synth drum sound that way. If I press the key and flick it at just the right time, I can hear the 5th harmonic of a melodic sound mixed with noise that made up the synth snare drum sound on my PSS 270 keyboard.. I can see why the MS10 is so fun. It is simpler yet powerful. I think I heard alot of Star Wars sounds lol!

      @@The-word-I-does-not-exist Ha Haa! If you think THAT feature is great I recommend you try and play a Yamaha PF70 or PF80 FM digital Piano.. Switch to preset 5, and hopefully if the piano has the BIG bulky sustain pedal called a HALF PEDAL, you press that pedal halfway and the preset 5 on those 2 Pianos has a very unique PONGYIIWAAHNN sound. Oh it is something else! The quick release of the keys on that preset is also very nice. ANd when you play it soft... a thing of utter beauty. Thanks Sam for biggin’ up the single oscillator synths! Love my MS-10 (had it for 34 years 😱) ...always felt there was a bit of prejudice from a lot of synthesists that single oscillator synths were lacking in some way, but there’s definitely an immediacy playing and tweaking a synth like the MS-10. Mine usually sits beside an EDP Gnat (another single oscillator synth that gets a lot of stick) ...and they play beautifully together 😉

    Also my first synth. Wonderful machine.
    Here's another best-kept secret: the external input distorts in the most excellent way. Thick overdrive kinda distortion thing. One of the best bass guitar fuzz machines I've ever heard.

  • @GeorgeL909
    @GeorgeL909 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Thing I noticed about single oscillator analog mono synths is they sound amazing run through heavy guitar distortion pedals if you're trying to get a very heavy metal or doom metal sound. Too many oscillators through a dense distortion chain doesn't translate quite as well and loses much of its punch, but one chunky slightly enveloped oscillator can sound huge through the right distortion chain.

    • @LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER
      @LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Richard James you can get similar with plugins, however using hardware also makes you approach plugins with a different approach that makes it easier to sound like the hardware. there are subtleties to it etc. i find the win with using hardwarre is twisting the knobs and stuff, i dont see the point in using hardware without knobs like a dx7 cus its literaslly the same haha but some may disagree!!!! but thats my 2 cents, i think the ms10 is the ultimate to add a bit of pazazz to synth songs even if the rest is plugins and stuff

    • @paulmanningremixes6408
      @paulmanningremixes6408 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Richard James At this point in their evolution, I think some of the software versions of the old classics can achieve as good, and dare I say it, often better results than their hardware counterparts, especially if one puts in a bit of effort and TLC with routing, performance and recording. They’re great if you simply use them simply, with some midi, but if you record them in in a similar fashion to how it was done in the 70s and early 80s, with tons of variations and live playing and even imperfections, with a few well chosen effects, one can often end up with synth parts that are just as authentic. Of course, there are those that are dedicated enough to only be happy using hardware, which is understandable, but with vintage gear often reaching prohibitively expensive prices, it seems silly to not embrace the far more affordable and flexible software offerings.

    It's weird, some things do just "feel" better, some of my gear is technically far less versatile, but the lack of fine control over things means the machine just has to speak for itself, you're more of a copilot in those situations and it makes for a way less finicky experience in my opinion!

    I love everything about this video! Your tour of the MS-10 reminds me of the love and sleep-loss-inducing excitement I experienced over my very first synth, a MOOG MG-1 from Radio Shack in 1980 (a rare collab between MOOG Music and the “rat shack” here in the US). I worked for a whole year after school as a young teenager to get it. I actually slept with it the first few weeks, and one year accidentally shot one of the keys with a BB gun. The key still sports the hole after all these years. It gives the keyboard a more “airy” feel 🤪 (and makes me cringe every time I see it). BTW- The Microcosm reminds me a bit of my Eventide Space pedal.

    Simple waveforms like saws have a very noticeable fundamental and harmonics. For leads, adding bibs and bobs like an out of phase osc will thicken the sound, but that does tend to make it less present. I've found that for leads, simple is better, unless the lead is just the main layer playing. If you have a beefy bass synth, you almost don't want the lead to have competing beat frequencies that cancel out the cronchy bass.
    And unless you have fancy eq chains in this, you can't really take that, so it's almost best to it introduce those in the first place!

    I love the MS-10. It was the 1st synthesizer I'd ever owned with a patchbay. In 1998, a friend of mine found me a beat up copy at our local swap meet for $40. The inputs were severely caked with rust and it was missing a key. It constantly broke down. But, I learned quite a lot about synthesis in a relatively short period of time. Best wishes.

    Even though I had an MS-20 rather than a 10, I still weep for selling it all too soon, when I was too single-mindedly into polysynths (DW8000, Matrix 6, JX3P, Chroma Polaris) back in the 90s, and practically gave away the Korg for $250. I still haven't in 45 years of playing synths owned a higher-knob-per-function analog synth than the MS-20. And prior to getting a DX7IIFD in 1988, the 20 was my go-to bass keyboard (replacing a Hohner Pianet run through a lo-pass guitar pedal). I don't know if I'll ever re-enter the knobby synth world, even though so many good options exist now, more than ever! But if I do, I'd be tempted to re-acquaint myself with the 10 or 20.

    Hi Sam. Am still surprised that (like Claudio Dr Mix, btw), you never use the mod wheel🤔I have to admit that first thing I did when I bought my first MS20 way back in 78, was to connect the mod wheel (and the trig button too!) so frustrated I was with all my previous "traveler generation" korgs (700s, 809dv, 900...) all missing this Minimoog like wheel. I still have all my korg synths (including my first ever, a 800dv bought in may 76, and almost all the various iterations of the MS20). And even if my first early vintage one is a rev1 with the original filter, or my smaller ms20 reboot or the full size diy kit desktop one all have a rev1/2 switch, I tend to agree with you that the 10 has more oomph. Probably, as you judiciously noted, thanks to its simpler and more direct signal path. In fact its sound is very close to the 770's one ( though less known and certainly hugely underrated, it remains probably my favourite korg synth - with the 800dv - so much that I still own two of them...

    Love your enthusiasm! You're basically me at the age of 13 (in 1978). I tried a Korg synth in a shop around that time I think. It was a piano and organ shop, and the synths were hidden away in the basement because they were so "niche" :)

  • @validcore

    My first synth was the MS-10 also. Still have it and yes the same thing happened when I got the MS-20. With the 20 the patch bay has far less musical that you can do. Only the filter patch will.let you stay in tune. On the MS-10 the PWM patch let's you have way more patches available that are still playable musically....instead of cool yet not in tune with the keys special effect type sounds.

    I was surprised how MS10 vs MS20 vids there were on TH-cam. They both sound good.
    A pal's dad used to do the bins in Glasgow. People throw out the weirdest stuff.
    One day he came back with the red Neu! LP and a Korg MS10 that someone had just chucked out in their rubbish.
    I was so envious. I had been the cool kid with a Korg Micro-Preset but the MS10 trumped that big time.
    Haven't seen the guy in decades, and who knows where either of those synths are now. I still listen to Neu! though

      @@MisAnnThorpe hi Anne I had a yamaha CS10 for about ten years then a cs15 and 30l. The 15 is a synth like a minimoog with a softer sound and more control, with nice string type lead sounds brassy leads is a great lead instrument with a good yamaha keyboard action as in all the cs range the cs30l is a lot bigger built into a good flight case with legs with even more control and has a sound quality which is very good at brass and string leads I hope this will help you remember they don't have any echo or phase effects adding them will be great on an already beautiful sound quality
