Great work man.. Actually it's the same method I follow. I have had some people claiming that electric start is the best, but I prefer to kick (mostly because I like the feel of it). And I use to do the same (pumping before kicking) and in 98% of time it works. Great job again bro.
Exactly, pumping before kicking is the right way to do it. That the basic trick of how they start a bullet in one kick or push by one arm. I know a mechanic who does that.

Brother , firstof all its a very helpful video, i face the same issue of that metal cranking sound, is that of any harm to the engine? Do have any idea what causes that sound? And ia there any need to do aome repairs to sort out this issue?
Please don't use choke to start it. it will run too rich and starve engine of oil.as petrol soaks up oil it will absorb oil from the cilinder sleeve and destroy the sleeve.i haven't opened my engine in 14 years so trust me

This is how I cold start my bullet 500 1) Turn fuel knob to 'ON 2) Hold the clutch and push the kicker down to remove the sticky clutch (Sticky due to oil at cold temperature) 3) Crank by electric start with minimum throttle open. Minimum throttle open is the throttle just after free throttle play 4)Hold the throttle in that position for 10 seconds. The beat will start to settle and you can let go of the throttle 5) Idle for a min before moving Check his other video for idling setting.. if the idle is lean it will go kat kat The manual advises electric start during cold start. The battery will go down only if you are not holding the clutch, as the clutch will disengage gear from the engine, which reduces the load on the starter motor. Therefore improves battery life. The battery will not go down just because of electric-starting. It is easily charged when you are idling at traffic. Like enfield rider said monitor the water level of battery for long life. The problem is not the starting but the battery itself. Water based battery have a poor life when compared to maintenance free battery. But it cost less. Not every car is push started to save battery.. :D Always hold clutch while electric start. Not only cold start but every single start. The UCE is similar to all modern engines and a kick-start is not needed, though it's fun to start a bullet. Always keep the petrol knob in off position before parking. Again great video bro!

hey bro, thanks for this video on cold kick start. really helpful. I would like to share an experience but not 100% certain why mechanics at royal Enfield say this. Maybe you can n all in your community can explain. . . . I used to kick start as you have shown in the video once every morning and the rest of the day used the self start, however just under 8 months I had to replace the sprag assembly which costs around 4-5K. I was shocked to hear a replacement for my new bull. the theory which the showroom mechanics say is that the newer bullets with self start is not built for regular toggle of kick n self unless kick is used for an emergency. they said it's due to the use of self the sprag clutch turns in one direction n while kicking it turns the other. This toggling of start between self n kick breaks the sprag teeth and the springs holding them . . . hence the sprag will have to be replaced often when you get more of the metal clinking sound. Since my replacement I have avoided the kicking all together. . . . so my request is can you check which is correct? it's a shame how these bikes have been designed modified inefficiently. . . what's the purpose of kicker n self when these type of inherent issues persist. . . . thanks for you help.

Yes you replaced sprag assembly because you are not holding the clutch before using self. Also u need to release the sticky clutch before kick starting to. If don't you will be changing the entire kit.
+Bharath Medehal Bro the Sprag clutch Is Designed For Rotating By The Self Motor, And Rotates In A Way Which Is The Same Direction Of Rotation When The Rider Cranks The Machine Manually. This Clutch Is Activated / Rotated By Self Motor, Through One Dummy Gear Which Is Installed Between SPRAG CLUTCH And The Self Motor.Now, Unless The Rider Is Really Adept In Sensing The Position Of The Piston Immediately Before Manually Cranking The Engine Would Recoil Means Engine Shaft Would Rotate In The Opposite Of The Normal Driving Direction Because Of High Presure That Means There Would Be Load On The SPRAG CLUTCH In The Opposite Rotation Direction, And Then The CLUTCH Elements Inside The Same Would Get Damaged However, Even When You Use The Electric Start, The RECOIL ISSUE Can Happen, And Therefore The Possibility Of Damage To The SPRAG CLUTCH Is Equal In Both Cases, That Is DURING MANUAL AS WELL AS ELECTRIC CRANKING. This Recoils Situation Can Be Sensed As This Gives An Audible Recoil Noise In Both Cases.

I never thought of the piston position n recoil effecting the opposite rotation n certainly with that kinda pressure the sprag could break. How can one know the piston position?. . . . n I have also read that you could do away with sprag completely if wanted to n only rely on manual starting. Saves the often replacement I guess.
+Ajaysubramaniyan Raju I always hold n release the clutch for 4-5 times before a self start in order to free up the sticky plates. . . . I think that this may not be the primary cause for a sprag damage.
Just pull the choke before starting... and yes kick starting is the best.. and your method is correct... i recommend not to turn the rpm screw because not everyone knows the correct way to set it.. by this u can mess the engine performance and mileage

Thanks Alot Bro . Yes Mega Phone Is A good Performance Exhaust There Is an Increase In the low end torque as well as it helps in reducing the vibrations from the engine a little bit . My Friend that i mentioned in this video having a cl350 has a megaphone silencer and its sounds awesome . Hi bro, great video Instead of adjusting idling screw u can place a coin between idling screw and metal disc to which throttle cable is wired. I have been using classic 350 for past 4 years and crossed 50k Kms. I used the same method you do and benefits are as below 1. my battery lasted up to 2.5 years, I also did the regular top up of distilled water.2. never got spray clutch/starter motor problem which when happens cost you around 4-7k. This is one of the expensive problems in bullet.

my tb 350 wont start in cold days especially when i use choke . when it starts after 9-10 kicks the rpm is unstable and it shuts off,it only starts after a lot of kicks or self. is this normal?
Kicking while the clutch is disengaged won't help in oil circulation. The oil pump is driven by the crank shaft which in turn is connected to the kicker through the clutch. That's why you don't feel any resistance (because of the crank getting disconnected) when you kick with the clutch disengaged. Taking crank out of the equation implies that the oil pump also won't work.
beautifully explained! simple and precise!I own a classic 350. I hold the clutch and kick for about 5-6 times. then I give 3-4 blank kicks without holding the clutch with the kill switch off before giving one full kick to start it. is this ok? can any issue arise out of this? I am so far able to start it with a single kick.

+Charan Chowdary bro it is not recommended to rev your engine when it is in its cold state as there is less circulation of fuel it causes deformation of the Pistons . It is not something which happens suddenly but it can happen in the long run . A better way to keep the engine from getting off is to increase the idling speed of the engine until the engine turns hot . I wanted to know if you could help me with something. I have a Royal Enfield 500 classic from 2012. it has been sitting for five years without being used. I recently changed the brake fluid but I'm not sure what to do with the engine. I place carburetor starter fluid inside the electronic fuel injector and I tried to start it. after a while the motorcycle came to life. I went riding for 30 minutes. everything seemed fine. I went back home and the battery was dead, but the lights still come on and I tried to start it but now it would not start out all. as I was turning it on by using the electric start I gave it some throttle and I heard a loud POP!. I looked underneath the fuel tank and the had popped off of the connector to the engine. Is my engine ruined? do I need to replace the EFI assembly? When I tried to turn it on I could see a flame coming from the part that had been disconnected.

you didn't mention the choke I am getting a classic 500 with EFI, but it also has a choke lever - what would that be used for an an EFI bike? Also, while what you said in the video was correct, you showed a diagram of a 2 stroke not a 4.

While your intent is correct my friends but your concept is not clear. Trust me on this, I am a Mechanical engineer and know more than enough about bullet. I myself a owner and experimenter on REs I have owned for last 15 years. Only correction required in your procedure is not to hold the clutch. When you hold the clutch the crank shaft disengage. In all the Indian bikes, lubricating is splash type, which means the splash of oil is created when the crankshaft rotates. So if you hold the clutch, which means disengage the crankshaft, you are not going to have any effective lubrication. Rest all is fine, bro. Good, informative video.

Hello enfield rider.... have you ever experienced a situation where the cold start of bullet takes just 1-2 kicks whereas when the bullet runs for 20-30 km and then if u want to kick start,it takes almost 8-10 kicks????? I personally use a classic 350 which is 6 months old and i experience the above situation. Cold starting is just 1-2 kicks and when the engine is hot it takes more kicks to start. Any help/suggestion in this would be verymuch appreciated.

ANKIT TULI The choke is eventually provided to cold start your bike. using choke during start up is good.. but dont use choke while riding, it will eat up ur bike's fuel

Yes Bro It Is not at all Recommended To Frequently get that metal cranking sound . it mainly happens when you cold start your engine in a wrong method . do try out this method bro and see whether there is any reduction in that sound . But in the manual it says to self start it. We need to press the electric start for upto 5 sec until the engine starts or else repeat the same process.

bro modifications for that bike is very minimum as people love the simplicity and old age look of the standard 350 . but one of the draw back is the rear Tyree its very small and Doesn't look so appealing . changing the tyre to the cl350's will be a good and worth modification . you will have to change the rim too . Providing a better cushioning for the seat will be good . If you need more do let me know and i will try and make a video on a modified st350 . Informative video bro.But I would like to add that turning the idling screw isn't practical every single day.A suggestion I would like to mention is to give in a few more kicks after the first step i.e kicking while holding the clutch, as it helps.Then slightly apply the throttle and get your bike warmed up ; you are all set to ride then ! Raghu Varman 350 cc also you will be getting around 35- incase of T-Bird 40-45 incase of classic 45+ in bullet and Electra. that is the mileage you can get. you can improve mileage by increasing Tyre pressure which reduce ground contact andgive harsh ride.. or you can run the engine lean by adjusting carburetor which in turn increase engine heat. I advise you against this if you are in the city. what you can do and benefit mileage is tune carburetor in proper ratio clean air filter once a month. even modern bikes like Fz, R15 gives around 35-40 so don't worry and enjoy the ride.

Apart from the misleading diagrams, which refer to the operations of a two stroke as mentioned by others, in the case of difficulty the plug condition should be checked. The Bosch plugs supplied, at least to later UCE models, are often faulty. In my case, with 2019 classic at only 400miles, the original bosch plug was patchy and sooty and cold starting was immediately put right with NGK BPR6ES.

I have had some people claiming that electric start is the best, but I prefer to kick (mostly because I like the feel of it).
And I use to do the same (pumping before kicking) and in 98% of time it works.

Exactly, pumping before kicking is the right way to do it. That the basic trick of how they start a bullet in one kick or push by one arm. I know a mechanic who does that.

Brother , firstof all its a very helpful video, i face the same issue of that metal cranking sound, is that of any harm to the engine? Do have any idea what causes that sound? And ia there any need to do aome repairs to sort out this issue?
i own bullet350 . Kick 2,3 times in ignition off. Then use choke.Let it run for 10to 15 sec and turn off the choke .Let it idle. Simple as that.
Please don't use choke to start it. it will run too rich and starve engine of oil.as petrol soaks up oil it will absorb oil from the cilinder sleeve and destroy the sleeve.i haven't opened my engine in 14 years so trust me

This is how I cold start my bullet 500
1) Turn fuel knob to 'ON
2) Hold the clutch and push the kicker down to remove the sticky clutch (Sticky due to oil at cold temperature)
3) Crank by electric start with minimum throttle open. Minimum throttle open is the throttle just after free throttle play
4)Hold the throttle in that position for 10 seconds. The beat will start to settle and you can let go of the throttle
5) Idle for a min before moving
Check his other video for idling setting.. if the idle is lean it will go kat kat
The manual advises electric start during cold start.
The battery will go down only if you are not holding the clutch, as the clutch will disengage gear from the engine, which reduces the load on the starter motor. Therefore improves battery life.
The battery will not go down just because of electric-starting. It is easily charged when you are idling at traffic. Like enfield rider said monitor the water level of battery for long life. The problem is not the starting but the battery itself. Water based battery have a poor life when compared to maintenance free battery. But it cost less. Not every car is push started to save battery.. :D
Always hold clutch while electric start. Not only cold start but every single start.
The UCE is similar to all modern engines and a kick-start is not needed, though it's fun to start a bullet.
Always keep the petrol knob in off position before parking.

hey bro, thanks for this video on cold kick start. really helpful. I would like to share an experience but not 100% certain why mechanics at royal Enfield say this. Maybe you can n all in your community can explain. . . . I used to kick start as you have shown in the video once every morning and the rest of the day used the self start, however just under 8 months I had to replace the sprag assembly which costs around 4-5K. I was shocked to hear a replacement for my new bull. the theory which the showroom mechanics say is that the newer bullets with self start is not built for regular toggle of kick n self unless kick is used for an emergency. they said it's due to the use of self the sprag clutch turns in one direction n while kicking it turns the other. This toggling of start between self n kick breaks the sprag teeth and the springs holding them . . . hence the sprag will have to be replaced often when you get more of the metal clinking sound. Since my replacement I have avoided the kicking all together. . . . so my request is can you check which is correct? it's a shame how these bikes have been designed modified inefficiently. . . what's the purpose of kicker n self when these type of inherent issues persist. . . . thanks for you help.

Yes you replaced sprag assembly because you are not holding the clutch before using self. Also u need to release the sticky clutch before kick starting to. If don't you will be changing the entire kit.
+Bharath Medehal Bro the Sprag clutch Is Designed For Rotating By The Self Motor, And Rotates In A Way Which Is The Same Direction Of Rotation When The Rider Cranks The Machine Manually. This Clutch Is Activated / Rotated By Self Motor, Through One Dummy Gear Which Is Installed Between SPRAG CLUTCH And The Self Motor.Now, Unless The Rider Is Really Adept In Sensing The Position Of The Piston Immediately Before Manually Cranking The Engine Would Recoil Means Engine Shaft Would Rotate In The Opposite Of The Normal Driving Direction Because Of High Presure That Means There Would Be Load On The SPRAG CLUTCH In The Opposite Rotation Direction, And Then The CLUTCH Elements Inside The Same Would Get Damaged However, Even When You Use The Electric Start, The RECOIL ISSUE Can Happen, And Therefore The Possibility Of Damage To The SPRAG CLUTCH Is Equal In Both Cases, That Is DURING MANUAL AS WELL AS ELECTRIC CRANKING. This Recoils Situation Can Be Sensed As This Gives An Audible Recoil Noise In Both Cases.

I never thought of the piston position n recoil effecting the opposite rotation n certainly with that kinda pressure the sprag could break. How can one know the piston position?. . . . n I have also read that you could do away with sprag completely if wanted to n only rely on manual starting. Saves the often replacement I guess.
+Ajaysubramaniyan Raju I always hold n release the clutch for 4-5 times before a self start in order to free up the sticky plates. . . . I think that this may not be the primary cause for a sprag damage.
Just pull the choke before starting... and yes kick starting is the best.. and your method is correct... i recommend not to turn the rpm screw because not everyone knows the correct way to set it.. by this u can mess the engine performance and mileage
use choke instead of turning up idle screw. that's why choke is provided. Good video.

Thanks Alot Bro . Yes Mega Phone Is A good Performance Exhaust There Is an Increase In the low end torque as well as it helps in reducing the vibrations from the engine a little bit . My Friend that i mentioned in this video having a cl350 has a megaphone silencer and its sounds awesome . Instead of adjusting idling screw u can place a coin between idling screw and metal disc to which throttle cable is wired.
I have been using classic 350 for past 4 years and crossed 50k Kms. I used the same method you do and benefits are as below 1. my battery lasted up to 2.5 years, I also did the regular top up of distilled water.2. never got spray clutch/starter motor problem which when happens cost you around 4-7k. This is one of the expensive problems in bullet.

my tb 350 wont start in cold days especially when i use choke . when it starts after 9-10 kicks the rpm is unstable and it shuts off,it only starts after a lot of kicks or self. is this normal?
Kicking while the clutch is disengaged won't help in oil circulation. The oil pump is driven by the crank shaft which in turn is connected to the kicker through the clutch. That's why you don't feel any resistance (because of the crank getting disconnected) when you kick with the clutch disengaged. Taking crank out of the equation implies that the oil pump also won't work.
beautifully explained! simple and precise!I own a classic 350. I hold the clutch and kick for about 5-6 times. then I give 3-4 blank kicks without holding the clutch with the kill switch off before giving one full kick to start it. is this ok? can any issue arise out of this? +Charan Chowdary bro it is not recommended to rev your engine when it is in its cold state as there is less circulation of fuel it causes deformation of the Pistons . It is not something which happens suddenly but it can happen in the long run . A better way to keep the engine from getting off is to increase the idling speed of the engine until the engine turns hot .

I wanted to know if you could help me with something. I have a Royal Enfield 500 classic from 2012. it has been sitting for five years without being used. I recently changed the brake fluid but I'm not sure what to do with the engine. I place carburetor starter fluid inside the electronic fuel injector and I tried to start it. after a while the motorcycle came to life. I went riding for 30 minutes. everything seemed fine. I went back home and the battery was dead, but the lights still come on and I tried to start it but now it would not start out all. as I was turning it on by using the electric start I gave it some throttle and I heard a loud POP!. I looked underneath the fuel tank and the had popped off of the connector to the engine. Is my engine ruined? do I need to replace the EFI assembly? When I tried to turn it on I could see a flame coming from the part that had been disconnected.

While your intent is correct my friends but your concept is not clear.
Trust me on this, I am a Mechanical engineer and know more than enough about bullet.
I myself a owner and experimenter on REs I have owned for last 15 years.
Only correction required in your procedure is not to hold the clutch.
When you hold the clutch the crank shaft disengage.
In all the Indian bikes, lubricating is splash type, which means the splash of oil is created when the crankshaft rotates.
So if you hold the clutch, which means disengage the crankshaft, you are not going to have any effective lubrication.
Rest all is fine, bro.

Hello enfield rider.... have you ever experienced a situation where the cold start of bullet takes just 1-2 kicks whereas when the bullet runs for 20-30 km and then if u want to kick start,it takes almost 8-10 kicks?????
I personally use a classic 350 which is 6 months old and i experience the above situation. Cold starting is just 1-2 kicks and when the engine is hot it takes more kicks to start.
Any help/suggestion in this would be verymuch appreciated.

ANKIT TULI The choke is eventually provided to cold start your bike. using choke during start up is good.. but dont use choke while riding, it will eat up ur bike's fuel

I too have the problem of metallic cranking sound in my bullet, is it normal in all bullets are I need to take care of about it???
Yes Bro It Is not at all Recommended To Frequently get that metal cranking sound . it mainly happens when you cold start your engine in a wrong method . do try out this method bro and see whether there is any reduction in that sound . +Nirmal Anand Bro the Sprag clutch Is Designed For Rotating By The Self Motor, And Rotates In A Way Which Is The Same Direction Of Rotation When The Rider Cranks The Machine Manually. This Clutch Is Activated Rotated By Self Motor, Through One Dummy Gear Which Is Installed Between SPRAG CLUTCH And The Self Motor.Now, Unless The Rider Is Really Adept In Sensing The Position Of The Piston Immediately Before Manually Cranking The Engine Would Recoil Means Engine Shaft Would Rotate In The Opposite Of The Normal Driving Direction Because Of High Presure That Means There Would Be Load On The SPRAG CLUTCH In The Opposite Rotation Direction, And Then The CLUTCH Elements Inside The Same Would Get Damaged However, Even When You Use The Electric Start, The RECOIL ISSUE Can Happen, And Therefore The Possibility Of Damage To The SPRAG CLUTCH Is Equal In Both Cases, That Is DURING MANUAL AS WELL AS ELECTRIC CRANKING. This Recoils Situation Can Be Sensed As This Gives An Audible Recoil Noise In Both Cases.

We need to press the electric start for upto 5 sec until the engine starts or else repeat the same process.

If using efi, electric start with choke until engine picks up speed, about a minute. Then good to go

Enfield Rider brother i have a standard 350. can u suggest me some Modifications for it... will be quite helpful as i am a bit confused..
bro modifications for that bike is very minimum as people love the simplicity and old age look of the standard 350 . but one of the draw back is the rear Tyree its very small and Doesn't look so appealing . changing the tyre to the cl350's will be a good and worth modification . you will have to change the rim too . Providing a better cushioning for the seat will be good . If you need more do let me know and i will try and make a video on a modified st350 . bro never go for the alloy wheels . it ruins the comfort you get from your bullet . opt for the stock rear rim of the classic 350 .

Informative video bro.But I would like to add that turning the idling screw isn't practical every single day.A suggestion I would like to mention is to give in a few more kicks after the first step i.e kicking while holding the clutch, as it helps.Then slightly apply the throttle and get your bike warmed up ; you are all set to ride then !

Nothing much can be done. Honestly it's 500CC. For that 30-35 is good mileage.

Raghu Varman 350 cc also you will be getting around 35- incase of T-Bird 40-45 incase of classic 45+ in bullet and Electra. that is the mileage you can get.
you can improve mileage by increasing Tyre pressure which reduce ground contact andgive harsh ride.. or you can run the engine lean by adjusting carburetor which in turn increase engine heat. I advise you against this if you are in the city.
what you can do and benefit mileage is
tune carburetor in proper ratio
clean air filter once a month.
even modern bikes like Fz, R15 gives around 35-40 so don't worry and enjoy the ride.

In a standard 500 make sure that the side stand is folded or else for bs4 engine if the stand is unfolded it wont start ☺☺

Apart from the misleading diagrams, which refer to the operations of a two stroke as mentioned by others, in the case of difficulty the plug condition should be checked.
The Bosch plugs supplied, at least to later UCE models, are often faulty.
In my case, with 2019 classic at only 400miles, the original bosch plug was patchy and sooty and cold starting was immediately put right with NGK BPR6ES.
