      Yes, it is definatly worth doing a few songs at a time. Also this is more of a hip hop opera than a traditional broadway musical. Everything is to music and one song will flow into the next so listenjng to more than one at a time will help in keeping the narrative. Additionally just by listening to the soundtrack you get the whole show.

  • @FarashaSilver

    Yes, Hamilton is known as a "sung-through" musical, which means the entire story is in the songs. There are only a small handful of pieces of staging that are not included in the OBC recording.

    • @weirdbunmi
      @weirdbunmi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      A "sung-through" musical is called an opera! Hamilton is often affectionately called a "hip-hopera" 😆

    • @FarashaSilver
      @FarashaSilver 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@weirdbunmi At that point they're technically almost the same thing, it's basically genre convention that keeps us from calling it "opera" off the top of our heads.

    • @weirdbunmi
      @weirdbunmi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@FarashaSilver I didn't mean to give the impression that Hamilton isn't an opera. Hip hopera, or rap opera, is the term for an opera using rap or hip hop (or a rap work in opera form).
      For example, R Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet" would also be one.

    • @FarashaSilver
      @FarashaSilver 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@weirdbunmi Yeah I was agreeing with you! Coming from musical theater the difference is almost semantic - a sung-through musical like Sweeny Todd is an opera by definition, and along with your example you have rock operas like Tommy and The Wall which are also called concept albums. Opera with spoken lines would be technically a musical by definition. It's just our cultural idea of opera as "sung-through in an operatic style" that leads us to qualify other things as rock opera or hip-hopera, etc.

    • @quinintheclouds
      @quinintheclouds 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@weirdbunmi "rock opera" is another popular term for musicals with all singing, like Les Miserables for instance

  • @colt1903
    @colt1903 2 ปีที่แล้ว +177

    Yes, the entire production is done in song, which is one reason why it's basically all in a hip-hop/rap style. If they did it in typical musical fashion with how many words there are you'd be looking at a 6 to 8 hour long production.

  • @weirdbunmi
    @weirdbunmi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +74

    The quote "if you stand for nothing, you fall for everything" is often attributed to Alexander Hamilton. However, no one actually knows where it originated from. It almost certainly wasn't this particular Alex Hamilton, but it's an old and widespread enough adage that we can't accurately trace its roots.

    "God, I wish there was a war
    Then we could prove that we're worth more than anyone bargained for"
    I don't think that people back then were necessarily "built different."
    Hamilton was poor. His mother was dead and his father was not in the picture. He used the war for recognition, advancement, and social and class climbing.
    It's no different than 18 year olds today, coming out of high school with limited resources and choosing to join the US military to change your financial circumstances and/or help you pay for college/grad school...

    A musical without dialogue is referred to as sung-through. While it is a little less common on Broadway (around 30 or so in the history)... many of the greats such as Rent, Les Miserables, Cats, Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, and of course Hamilton are sung-through.

I would recommend Schuyler Sists on its own, then pair Farmer Refuted with You'll Be Back. As you get further along, just ask and people will advise you on what will work best.

    I do hope you enjoy your Hamilton journey. It is a great time. It's better in one sitting, the transitions and motifs are excellent and you may lose some of the magic with long breaks between scenes. I'd suggest watching it all and break your reaction into 3 - 4 songs at a time. It is easier to know where the scene breaks should be when you've seen it. If you can't invest 3 hours at once, there is a natural break halfway through with the intermission. Either way though, thank you for sharing your reaction with us. We love seeing it all anew through your eyes. 😊

    “It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.” - and this was probably said first by Mark Twain, it is often misquoted as being said by Ben Franklyn and Abraham Lincoln... but the first recorded instance of that exact quote was from Mark Twain, who was rather famous for his turn of phrases. furthermore this turn of phrase seems to be a quippy rewording of the bible, Proverbs 17:28 - “Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.” which is definitely something Mark Twain would have done, even moreso that exact bible verse abraham lincoln is quoted as saying/writing, so attributing the original quote to lincoln isn't entirely incorrect... it's also a bible quote that Ben Franklyn likely would have used... so it's easy to see how the origin of the quote got messed up

    If you're still looking for song recommendations, I would strongly advise checking out The Stupendium (th-cam.com/users/TheStupendium).
    He mostly does comedic raps based on various video games and he has some of the best lyricism and flow that I've ever heard.
    If you do end up giving him a listen, I would recommend his songs Wake me up Before You Goat Goat, Gotta Build a Zoo, I Told You So, and Fiend Like Me

    In case you missed it: "Fools who run their mouths off wind up dead" is followed by John Laurens running his mouth, who does in fact wind up dead. Which is why he then says "Like I said..."

    The only song I'm kinda worried about you seeing is "Say no to this".
    It can be- uncomfy for some people 😅

      @@colt1903 I said some just because it bothers some people a whole lot more then others. I think everyone has at least a slight dislike of it, but some people with similar experiences or heck, even for no reason, have really bad experiences with the song.

    Hamilton is a “sung-through.” Another great sung-through (which I think is better than Hamilton) is Hadestown.

    Day 225 of asking Yobgs to react to dsmp character analysis such as Kindacoral's and Scrawls one on Niki Nihachu and Scrawls one on Fundy. Just character analysis and stuff. I realise this is probably getting annoying

    Nope. It's a line by AN Alexander Hamilton. Just not this one. "Those who stand for nothing will fall for anything."
