Building a brick chimney. | The skill of bricklaying

  • Building up a chimney in brick from just below the roofs ridge. Managed to get the whole done in one hit. We filled in the middle with blocks and just random bricks and muck. Around the middle where the chimney pot things go we used a material called micalite to hold the pots in solid as shown in the video. once we got up so far we corbelled the brickwork over to make the top stand out. We then flaunched up the top with lots of muck to make the effect on top. Added the chimney top and the job was done. I really enjoyed doing this.

    Really nice job, looks like red bank flue liners with lightweight expanded clay aggregate insulation backfill mixed with cement 20:1, just had mine done almost to the same spec and size, only thing that was done different was a lead dpc tray fitted, the lead for the tray was over a hundred quid but its there for a reason.

    If you worked with me you'd be doing top of that chimney again. Not enough mix on there to last and could of used a float to get it smooth as silk on the surface.

      @GingerDust69  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @adamturner2836
      @adamturner2836 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd definitely say the thickness off mix is too shallow. I find the thinner edges weather too fast and end up cracking away then once that's gone it just starts messing rest up. I've done a lot of trial and error over the years and find doing it thick right to edges is best then get a float and just pitch the edges for water to get off top. Rest of stack looks bob on can't fault that 👍 as you say we all find our own ways

      I've built several traditional chimneys and have used portland cement and 1/2 in rebar and none of the caps I have poured cracked... The mason I work for is third generation and I learned from him... there are caps we poured over 25 years ago and dont have a crack... Craftsmanship plays a huge part in a cap that last you have to know what you're doing...
