Still very much interested in Inspector Imanishi Investigates, I generally enjoy Japanese mysteries and it was the genre that got me started reading Japanese literature. Bummer the new Chevalier was a miss, I find glassmaking fascinating + the Venice backdrop seems like it could make for a great set-up.

I suspect you would like Inspector Imanishi Investigates. And yeah- I also expected to just sink into the Chevalier so I was really surprised.

I really enjoyed Mrs. S; I hope you do too. I just finished The God of the Woods and it’s one of my favourites of 2024 so far. It’s Winter here in Melbourne but I recommend as a summer read. Wonderful writing, and an excellent novel to sink into.

@@swirlymay what timing! My hold for The God of the Woods just came in from the library so it’s in my queue. Thanks for that recommendation !

I hope work calms down for you. Didn’t realise there was a sequel to Days at the Morisaki Bookshop. That was a lovely read so will look out for he next one. A Time in Rome sounds fantastic. Katie’s new book is wonderful!

Now that I've finished reading Elizabeth Taylor's novels, I'm looking forward to reading Elizabeth Bowen - according to a biographical note they were friends with one another - and have appreciated getting to hear your thoughts on her work. I'm currently reading The Trouble with Mrs Montgomery Hurst, but apart from that I haven't read any of these books, although I'm interested in Inspector Imanishi Investigates and The House Keepers.

Is there enough range with Elizabeth Taylor to do an author Spotlight series in her work, do you think?

@@HardcoverHearts There is some variation in tone in some of her titles, but there are occasions when characters from one book will be mirrored in another. She regularly wrote about middle-class married couples in England and I found that myself getting irked by the number of affairs that cropped up within her novels. There is a chance that she was exploring such matters from a different perspective each time.
While I very much enjoyed my time reading her dozen novels, and think more folk ought to read the author, I don't know if there is much room for analysis. I think some of her works might appeal to you - The Soul of Kindness being the one currently in my mind.
(Naturally, if you did hold an author spotlight for her, I'd be thrilled, but I always try and go with forewarned is forearmed.)

@@CharlesHeathcote that is exactly the type of analysis I was looking for. We have discovered that it is rare for an author to not circle around a few key themes or approaches. It’s really fun when you unlock that element but once you see it, it gets tiring quickly.

A below the stairs heist in Victorian times! And did I hear the word ‘scandalous’? I’m intrigued! And the fifties looking dust cover art helps too.

I am just proud of myself for not buying it in London. Though the last morning jaunt to Waterstones was for this one, I have to admit! 😂
