At the time of Brawl's release it was a not so subtle jab at all those people who wanted Nintendo games to be a bit grittier. As a gag it hasn't aged well, and as a stage it was always awful. At least 1-2's music was mofugging great.
Well it is the first level MARIO was featured in and I’m guessing it looks like that because of how bad it aged over the years because it was abandoned and forgotten by the bros.

I played Kirby Superstar Ultra way too much as a child and the great cave offensive was my favourite game in it. I collected all the treasures then kept replaying it anyway just because I liked it so much. So the great cave offensive in smash is my favourite casual stage. Just be glad that they didn’t add Milky Way Wishes (my second favourite game in the game).

If another player doesn't have enough pellets when the other player has enough, the ghosts are normal colour for them. How could you possibly have ghosts that are blue for player 1 and normal for player 2 when you're playing local?

Perhaps the ghosts could turn blue and glow the color of the player who got the Power Pellet, like glow red if Player 2 got it. It's the best I can think of :/

That lava map is actually really fun if u have actual friends to play with cause everyone is fighting to get into the little room that protects u from the wave it’s really funny and fun to play with friends
When I do The Great Cave Offensive, I do 8-player Smash 7v1 with 20 Stock. In my opinion, it makes the rounds last slightly longer.

I love Norfair! Then again, it was the very first Smash Bros stage I played, so I could just be naturally attracted to it. Also, I like all large, sprawling stages, including Palutena's Temple.

Not really, but I was split between Great Cave Offensive. First I liked it, then I didn't really like it, then I got sick of it, and then I liked it again, but that was when I was like 9. Now, as a serious gamer, I see the problems with this stage. I do agree with Nathaniel Bandy now. The ceilings are too low, the lava is annoying, there are dead-end corridors, and it takes too long to get across the map. Like I said, I like large and sprawling stages, but Great Cave Offensive is just a lazy excuse for one.

The problem with the Mario Bros stage is that without hazards, it is really hard to kill someone until 250% but with hazards on you can die at 25% because those turtles do so much knockback

Actually, I avoided the giant lava wall in Norfair as Ness by double-jumping, then using PK Thunder on myself. It worked. It also goes for Lucas, as well.
you can do that for any character that can get enough height to go above the wave because it doesn't go off screen

Am I the only one who likes great cave offensive?
Granted the only reason I liked it was because me and my friends played a “slay the monster” type game on it. One player would be the monster, (999HP) and 7 other players (100HP each) would be on a ‘team’ trying to defeat the monster. The winner was the living player who did the most damage, unless the monster killed everyone.
Mr. Muffins it becomes even more fun when players realize that they can get points for attacking their teammates. We’ve had to make so many hard decisions if a person was doing too much damage to the monster. Either kill the monster with that player winning the game, or take out the monster’s biggest threat to level out the playing field for the hunters.

Palutena’s temple is handsdown my favorite stage lol. It’s just sooo beautiful and it feels like a big home for Palutena.
Plus the size of the stage kind of makes sense because it literally represents the goddess of light. Obviously a temple that big would make sense, so the whole size dispute really doesn’t make sense to me

@Swanky Jay Toons fun fact: dreamland in n64 was the only good stage, not too small, not too big, and was the only stage used for competitive.
Out of all stages that are "huge" I actually like Great Cave Offensive most. It's not one of my favorite levels, but it's still playable compared to Palutena's Temple, Temple from Melee, New Pork City and my most hated level: 75m. I also happen to enjoy the Kalos Pokémon League. It's actually one of my favorites of all time. So when that level was put on this list, you hurt my feelings.

If you didn't know, that's basically how all competitive scenes and tournaments play. They turn all items and hazards off and limit to certain number of stages. Otherwise, basically no matter how skilled you are, anyone has a chance to win because they add too much RNG and luck.

You can actually avoid the huge tsunami of lava in norfair, all you have to do is to jump until you in the out of bounds area at the top of the screen, which is a secondary safe spot for you if u can't get inside the tube that pops up. It also requires good timing as well

I know this is a year late, but I agree whenever 75m pops up from the random stage rotation, I just pause the game and ask the people I am playing with if they just want to skip it. It's always a yes.

Palutena’s Temple IS worse than Mario Bros and Wily Castle, but it’s DEFINITELY better than Hanenbow.
This list is only really for competitive players, as someone who plays both casual and competitively I find these stages really fun when playing casually, some like Mario Bros are actually my favourite casual stages. Most of these could be fixed simply by turning off stage hazards.
these stages are for a game that is a party game not a fighting game like smash....oh right tend to forget its a party game

Pac-Maze from the 3DS game only works on the 3DS due to local multiplayer.
When a player touches a power pellet on this stage, it makes the ghosts vulnerable to touch... but only for them and it only changes their appearance on their screen, all the other players just see the ghosts as they normally are and can still get hit by them.

You can add Magicant from EarthBound to this list! I hate that Flying Man. If they could've eliminated it, then the stage would've been fine to play on. Also, I agree with Hanenbow. What exactly is the point of the stage? I once played on Palutena's Temple in Ultimate. It took almost 22 minutes to finish the fight... So thank you for adding that to the list.
I accually like the stage from #10 because I like to watch my opponents fly around when I do a powerful attack, and I just like the stage for how it looks
I like Great Cave Offensive, but only for screwing around with a bunch of people. Otherwise, it's too easy to camp.
I can personally sympathize on the 75M stage. I remember scrolling through the levels at one point and seeing 75M and thinking, "This looks fun." It wasn't.
Also, on Norfair, I somehow managed to escape the lava wave while playing as Bowser Jr.
I did it by getting to the top of the stage and using my up special to get shot really high above the screen. I wouldn't recommend trying that though. I figured out it was definitely a well-timed glitch that didn't work the next time I tried it.
For the lava wave a well timed dodge would save you

The Great Cave Offensive is one of my favorite maps just because I get nostalgia from Kirby Super Star which is one of my favorite Nintendo games. But yea the gameplay on it is always heinous

I think that was the point for Mushroomy Kingdom. They wanted it to look old and abandoned, reason being that it’s a level from the very first Super Mario Bros. game. They want it to seem like it was created such a long time ago that it just became old and dusty.
Best use for GCO is the Jiggy Spirit and similar, which essentially make for a friendlier Master Fortress
