  • PART-2 John Jacob goes through the main compartment of his Comms Go Bag. One thing missing from the video was the Signalink, but he did mention it, and will be producing a video covering portable digital operations.

Great information! I have comms bags for my wife and I that we carry in our vehicles. Mine are very similar but I see some things I need to add!

How about a little bit more on these digital transmissions. Are they more secure? Can you give us an example on what all gear to use and an example of transmitting and receiving on such a device, as a laptop or tablet? And I can't remember if I heard you mentioned this, but does it require a license to transmit this way?
I am still a bit new on most of this stuff and am absorbing and learning in all sorts of directions, among other interesting topics, like EMP fallout.
As soon as I think I have a handle on something, a whole new world opens up, like learning about UV5R's, FCC regulations for MURS,GMRS,FRS, HAM, General Class, Extra Class, HF, VHF, UHF, 2 Meter, 70cm, high gain antennas, whip antennas, directional antennas, J poles, Slim Jims, repeaters, simplex, duplex, Dakota Alert, CH3, then AMRRON and now Digital Comms on laptops. Where does it all end? lol!

+GhostHawk1776 It never ends! Yes, I will be covering digital communications in the near future. Digital communications are more 'private' than voice, but not necessarily more 'secure'. This Comms Go Bag video series was in response to several inquiries about the contents of my personal Comms Go Bag. So, this is content oriented, as opposed to how-to-use-everything oriented. More to follow, so stay tuned! -JJS

RE: Digital Comms - JJ, I'm waiting for someone to conjure up a VHF version of the Mattel IM-ME wireless text messaging device.
RE: The Go Bag - I absolutely love the Anderson connector idea. You further enforce the stereotype that we hams are miserly! It's wonderful. I am going to be scrounging up every wall wart I can lay hands on...
