    Wow, absolutely cool set up! As you know I am a fan of your work and channel. It sure was fun to see one of our bags loaded up and put to use. Thank you for the great field review. I always learn something new watching someone use our gear. Many thanks my friend. Stay safe and have a great Thanksgiving.

      Doc - Thanks! Hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving and Christmas! I do love the bag. Sadly - I broke the netbook laptop in the video this weekend (stepped on the screen next to my chair on the way to the head). Time to find a good bugout bag laptop :-) Hank

    I was just thinking about ya today as I was cabling up my station - been awhile since a video. Worth the wait! Great to see the system deployed, and that is a nice bag. 73.

      Thanks. I have had a few videos in the works that did no pan out but I'm happy I was able to finally make this one. The Doc's bag is great and it will work with more radios than the 817ND for sure. Hank

    I have the exact same bag from David. I love it. He is a size and space genius, focused on functionality. He is a great asset to our community. As many of you may know, he also makes first aid kits. I own several. I HIGHLY recommend!
    If any of you are looking for a portable, solar rechargeable power source for your comms gear, I HIGHLY recommend Hardened Power Systems. I own their gear. It is rock solid!!! Bill recently suffered a huge loss due to a fire at his factory. If any one is looking for a portable power solution, I encourage you to visit his web site, watch his story, and place an order. You WILL NOT be disappointed!!!
    As always Mr. Commsprepper, thank you for your videos. I learn so much from your channel. Keep up the great work!!!

      MonGo - Thanks. Adding a portable solar option is on my list and will check out Hardened Power. I too have a few of the Docs IFAKs. Thanks for the feedback and taking the time to comment. CommsPrepper

    Hello CP
    Thanks for sharing.
    A couple of tips to reduce the weight and make everything fit in docs bag.
    Dipole is fine but you could make a multiband dipole for 2-4 bands with one dipole head attached to mutiple wires cut for the different bands. I think its called a "butterfly Dipole" that would allow you to dump the giant tuner.
    Next, dump the rg-58 and replace with rg-174. 10% of the weight, with fewer losses if youre just doing 5watts with your FT-817. This allows you to carry the same length of rg-174 as your rg-58, in smaller space and weight.
    As always great video.

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the idea on the multiband dipole. The coax is light weight low-loss cable (not RG-58). I'm just not sure what type and the bag is still out in the car. CommsPrepper

    Nice setup, I am envious of that setup. I've been kicking around a way to use my 706 to do the same thing. I think I'll do my first video on that.
    Thanks again.

    • @WesternCivHasFallen
      @WesternCivHasFallen 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +STORM TROOPER You can send anything over ham radio. Images, video, teletype, pre-typed messages, your exact GPS location via digital packets, faxes, etc. Just to let you know.

  • @rosepagan2571
    @rosepagan2571 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the demo. So its basically another digital mode, like psk31, rtty etc? Where can i read up on how to setup a station like yours. Thanks again for the great video. Noel w2msa

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes Pactor is a digital mode but not like PSK31 or RTTY. Pactor is extremely fast with 100% error correction. You can follow this channel and see how I setup this station. The modem is not radio brand specific. Any HF radio will work. Hank

    Nice rig man! So, where were you attempting to send the email in your video? Did it get there? And, I assume it could be received by anyone listening, right?
    Thanks for all the videos and info.

  • @jeremyc9641
    @jeremyc9641 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Please don't hate the new guy questions.... Since this email was sent over radio, can anyone with the frequency pull in the message, or does it work like email accounts now; only goes to intended recipient?
    Is it possible to send data such as photos, maps, pdf., etc.?

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeremy C Attachments are possible but slow and hard on equipment. Encryption is not permitted in Amateur, so anyone with a strong desire can read the messages. Don't worry about the questions - keep them coming.

    Great video, I have the same bag and love it. so can you pleases send me more information on how to get started on doing email over the radio? I would love to get started on it. tks.

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Marc Brown I have an HF email playlist. To get started you will need to buy a modem. You have two options cheap/slow (Signal Link USB) or pricey/fast (SCS P4 Dragon). From there you download RMS Express from www.winlink.org. You can also practice (and setup email account) with RMS Express by using it's TELNET (Internet Option), I have a video on this too.

    What about cooling with the radio in the bag?

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      jmtnvalley It's only a five watt radio but if it were to get warm it's easy to pull the radio from the bag to give more access to air for cooling.

    As a newbie HAM and all the bewildering methods of phone, CW and digital HF communications, antennas and handhelds for operations including repeaters etc, I was wondering if you had ever thought about setting up a "HAM Camp" school- kind of like "computer camp", but with emphasis on QRP and portable operations. Is there even such an entity currently out there? In the past, this may not have been even practical as there was no internet, digital processing, PACTOR, PSK etc., but how things have changed.

    • @Commsprepper

      Sounds like a good idea but the logistics and costs I think would be too much.

    • @Commsprepper

      +baudellio charles hard to make a video like that. Too many radio types, licensing requirements, and varying user requirements.

    I never even thought to look at getting online using a radio and am curious how well would something like that work to say get on Facebook or such? I mean obviously in a SHTF scenario I am not going to be getting on Facebook or such to check messages however if I were to say be out in a remote area and say a storm washed out the roads and took out the power and cable lines it would be possible to use the radio to call for help and lets just say that I am being told it's going to be a few days before anyone ccan get to me it would be nice to beable to get online and contact say my boss or maybe a family member to contact my boss especially since when I am in the woods my cell phone will be lucky to get one bar of signal and I can forget getting online on my phone.

      I'm TNC I am using is the SCS P4Dragon Pactor IV modem (in Pactor III mode). We are stilling waiting for a ruling from the FCC to see if Pactor IV speeds are permitted in the U.S. (the rest of the world is using Pactor IV). It's not a low-cost TNC but it is fast.
